[Q] Help me upgrading Galaxy S2 to ICS - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Driodians,
I am using Galaxy SII(GT-I9100) in India, I purchased this phone as a second user in Jan-12 with Android 2.3.6 version, till date I never faced any issues...
Now I want to update to ICS-4. I don't know exactly whether current version is Stock ROM or Custom ROM..
Please help me the suitable ROM to update for below config of my phone
Note: My phone is not rooted
Android 2.3.6
PDA: I9100XWKK2
PHONE:I9100XXKI4
CSC: I9100XSAKK1
As per CSC, this Android GB 2.3.6 firmware belongs to Australia(XSA) region....still it works great here(in India) without network(any) issues..
1.Now help me which official ICS firmware to install and how to install, so I can run SII without any issues in India...
2. Also, I want to backup my installed Apps? Is it possible to restore them after upgrading to ICS
Let me know if you require more information .....
Help me Please ....!

Well, you could try and flash with Odin the right stock ROM. By saying right i am reffering to this : go to settings, about phone and check ur build number. That's the unique code of the stock ROMS, or signatures or w/e you should call them. Those need to match in order to work in India, because you said that its XSA. In my point of view you should flash the Indian Stock ROM just to make sure your out of problems.
If you don't know with Odin browse youtube, or i think you could try with Samsung Kies because the ICS Stock ROM has already been released =D
About backup up apps, well, i used titanium backup and it failed me every time. Use other apps such as Nandroid, Backup Master, Mobile Backup II etc. You said you are not rooted so the titanium works only with rooted phones.
Hope it helps, have fun

Thanks....But as per current 2.3.6 kernel version(KK2) I didn't find matching Indian firmware...only one matched was Australian region ICS kernal(LP8).
I got same firware update thrgh kies...got confused whether to go via kies or ODIN.
Forgot to mention earlier, my GB2.3.6 is Australian Generic(unbranded)

if u connect ur phone to KIES and if its showing an ICS update is available then u can give it a try

If you can manage to install your applications again, it's better to wipe before and after the update.
Also personally I don't like backup apps to go from GB to ics.

you can use the following to backup your apps & sms
Titanium Backup for backing up your apps
SMS backup & restore for backing up your sms
You can merge your contacts with google.. or you can export all your contacts to the external card (if you have any)..
You can flash the indian ICS version directly through ODIN. It's very simple, easy & clean.. KIES take a hell lot of time to update.. (that's y i HATE it)
or if you dont want to do that.. you can find an Indian GB firmware 2.3.6 Flash it.. through ODIN & than flash Indian ICS.. using ODIN..
You can download the same from many sites one most popular being www.sammobile.com or www.theandroidsoul.com
If you want to know how to flash using ODIN... you can visit - http://www.theandroidsoul.com/i9100...-update-for-i9100g-galaxy-s2-finally-arrives/
NOTE: The above link is just for your reference if you want to flash your ROM through ODIN.. The direct download link for ICS provided on that page is for "I9100G".. SO I AM NOT SURE WHETHER IT WILL WORK ON OUR INDIAN I9100 model.. You can download the I9100 Indian ICS Firmware from sammobile.com & use the above link to see the steps on how to flash it using ODIN.

Hurray ...! I upgraded to ICS 4.0.3 through OTA Yesterday
No Issues ...No Conflicts , downloaded Installer Package in 30 mins and Installation took 10 mins.
Installer optimized my apps ... All apps are working fine ...... NO need to wipe the data(factory Reset)
If u got ICS update via OTA for your Galaxy SII, then it is the best & simplest way to update your device...

Have a look at the xda bookmarks link in my sig. In there you can find both official and official branded firmwares. Instructions on how to install are in the 1st post of those threads.
Dear Members'
Sorry for the question but what you mean by non ginger bread firmware on galaxy? The firmwares that i am flashing on it via odin are original stock firmwares downlaoded from samfirmware.... and the latest versions so they are gingerbread. As they are original stock they should be accepted by kies and must let kies to check for new firmwares and install if there is a new one.
Could you please enlight me.
The phone was original and boxed as i bought it , and as i sad it was able to update via kies until i flashed it with new ones from smafirmware.

Kies cannot update a phones firmware for a number of reasons in your case KH3 cannot be updated until ||Kies has a later firmware on its server .
jje
Dear Jjegan;
Thank you very much for the answer , but its seems to be like my explanation was incomplete and not detailed.Kies not mentions that there no update for the current version , it just says sometimes this device can not be updated and sometimes just shows the pda\modem\ version and no more info.
Thanks for help
you would basically need to use a older firmware that completely wipes your phone and return to at least 2.3.3. which kies will recognize and use a official branded firmware.
Kies has not sent out an official upgrade to certain countires that will recognize 2.3.4. It is just starting its roll out, I believe by the end of the year kies will recognize 2.3.4.
Dear CosmicBlue
Thanks for contribution but my previous firmware was 2.3.3 which was also downloaded from samfirmware.com and flashed trough odin , and still was giving an error indicating this device cannot updated via kies , and sometimes was showing the version of the csc modem pda and nothing else , so as you explained normaly in 2.3.3 in must say already latest version ....
I need a version where kies finds the phone and says already latest version and update if finds new release , normally i like to flash via odin but after all flashing all data is wiped and tired to configure eveything again ,and dont want to use backup.
Kind Regards.
you would need to go back to an older version of the firmware say an xkf1 and let kies upgrade it to the latest version which i believe officially is xkg5.
Thank you very much CosmicBlue , could you please guide me from where i shall download the official rom samfirmware.com maybe?
Kind Regards.

Hi,
As far as updates from odin go if you update with a Intratech non-wipe higher version of stock ROM (say XXKH3) from a lower version stock ROM (say XXKF3/G5) the data remains intact. I'm running the non-wipe version but did it when I updated from KF3 to KG5 as i had the same misconception. Somewhere in the forum it is discussed if you revert back to an older version of a ROM then you need to factory reset / wipe the data down.
Cheers
Dear Digifort;
Thanks for the contribution , as you mentioned i was running a full Rom also that wipes all the data , i was not aware that there is a non-wipe version , so now i will download a stock Rom from samfirmware a old one , flash with Odin and connect to kies after will look if it will update to current version.
Kind Regards.

First you stop double posting.
Second, you just turn off the phone, hold the power button till the phone shuts down. After that, you hold the HOME + VOLUME UP + POWER button till the Samsung Logo pops up, then release the POWER button.
When you see the Samsung 3e Recovery screen (TEXT IS BLUE), just select WIPE DATA, RESET PHONE, whatever it is called. Then reboot. You are good to go.

HELP

[Q] remove CPW CSC and use XEU

hi i am currently, according to Kies, using the latest version available to me on my Galaxy S2 (i9100) which is unlocked and i bought from the carphone warehouse.
The fimware I am using is 2.3.4 and my Kernel is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468
PDA:KI4 / PHONE:KI1 / CSC: KH1 (CPW)
however i know that this isn't the latest official release for the UK. I have researched numerous threads and i have tried changing me CSC using #*272*IMEI# however i am locked to CPW. So i then did more research and have found that i need to debrand my galaxy s2 from CPW to XEU to get the latest generic unlocked UK firmware. Can someone please tell me how to do this without using #*272*IMEI# because that doesn't work?
Your phone is unlocked but you want to unlock it ???
CPW is about the best CSC for the UK as it covers more networks ..
You will not get an update via KIES by changing your CSC ..
You can update and debrand by flashing a stock rom from the stock rom thread but you will may lose the KIES update path from then on.
Stock Roms .and csc

yes but if i remain on CPW i will stay on android 2.3.4 where as if i switch to XEU i get the latest updates since it is the most generic UK firmware? and surely if i change my CSC then Kies will offer me an update to 2.3.6

CSC has nothing to do with updates .
KIES reads the firmware and hardware and vendor codes from the phone .
Two paths to updates official via KIES you wait for vendor release
Or XDA via ODIN using latest stock Samsung firmware
Third possible is to use CheckFus to download firmware or find a way to change the codes on the phone .
jje
okay well howcome if i have unlocked handset i am still on 2.3.4 when there are people in the UK with 2.3.5? (sorry i am a noob)

You have a set of codes on your phone that determine its vendor and ID etc
Kies reads those codes
O2UK xxxx O2UK 11xxxx etc etc .
Then looks for that firmware on the server if it matches it downloads if it does not match it cannot download . So unless the vendor has updated then you have no download . Its the phone vendor who updates .
CheckFus and SpoofFW are two roous that may bypass the Kies checkup .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318683&highlight=spooffw
But this is XDA Developers and we dont use KIES .
jje
okay how do i know who my phone vendor is? i think it would be easier for me to just install cyanogenmod 7.1 however i am having trouble because when i followed all the instructions, i successfully rooted my phone installed ROM manager. however when i installed clockwork recovery and rebooted my phone it loaded android recovery mode 3e and says signature verification required. i gave up after a few attempts and thought it was due to my kernel? does the kernel version affect cyanogenmod? i.e. do newer versions of CM require a newer kernel?
You have Carphone Warehouse CSC hence no updates as most carriers tend to provide the updates.
Root with CF-ROOT and use customs or just flash a different firmware newer version with uk CSC with ODIN.
Sent from the valley of the shadows....
how do i CF-Root? and cant i just change my CSC so i get the newer updates if cpw doesn't release any?
No for reasons jje already said.
CF-ROOT is in original development and has concise instructions its very simple
There are lot's if stickys too take some timeout and read up as most information there will help you regarding learning about device.
Sent from the valley of the shadows....
okay then can you answer to questions for me? does a newer kernel affect the cyanogen mod and can you tell me how to install CM7.1 using CF root seeing as it didn't work last time due to signature error?
bomskiboy said:

Do you mean can you put another kernel in CM a rom that already has a kernel
and can you tell me how to install CM7.1 using CF root seeing as it didn't work last time due to signature error
The instructions are on the first page .

First time flashing CyanogenMod 7 to the Samsung Galaxy S II, or coming from another ROM?
Root the device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Perform a NANDroid backup of your current ROM.
Copy rom to internal SD card .
Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device via mounts and storage recover
Perform a factory reset.
Flash CyanogenMod.
Flash CM a second time .

first time and does whatever kernel you currently are on affect CM mod? or does CM install a new mod?
BTW 2.3.4 is the latest XEU firmware so changing to this won't make any difference to your firmware version number.

[Q] Stock kernel, how do i tell please

Hi Guys and Gals. I am a noob trying to update my Galaxy s2 to ICS and have hit a brick wall. I received the message that an update was available and downloaded it OTA, but the install failed for some reason. When i plug in to Kies i get the " Device doesn't support software upgrades via Kies" message.
After a little searching it seems the main reason for this might be a modified Kernel. The phone is an unbranded XSA model and i have never modified it in anyway. I have no idea if the dealer did any modifications before shipping.
What i need to know is, how do i tell if it has a stock kernel or not, and do i need to re flash the entire firmware to get it.
This is all the info on the phone.
Baseband version I9100XXKI4
Kernel Version [email protected]#2
PDA I9100XWKK2
Phone I9100XXKI4
CSC I9100XSAKE3
Build Info Friday Nov 11 18:05:58 KST 2011
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated and sorry the lack of knowledge.
I believe it still is the stock kernel, also XXKI4 is a stock baseband version for Gingerbread. Looks like you didn't get updated. Best thing to do is do it on this website if you want the proper ICS experience, and not all of that Touchwiz nonsense Samsung loves.
Chris.
Unless you flash custom roms or kernels it always has Stock kernel .
Use CHECKFUS to see if their is an ICS update for your phone if not you wait or flash stock ICS roms from here .
jje
Thanks for the replies. Just wondering what the issue with Kies would be? I am a little unsure as to which ICS version to get and also, what will happen to all my data, settings etc..
Backup your data factory reset phone and trie updates again .
Fails then flash stock firmware for your location from XDA ,
jje
Get the correct official firmware version from samfirmwares.Com.
Flash using ODIN.

How about flashing ICS?
What above user meant to say is what about flashing ICS via ODIN instead of letting Kies flash it for you?
Get your needed rom from here
Then use this guide.
Note: Using ODIN will wipe your appdata so backup your sms if needed and make sure contacts are synced etc. You can also backup apps/appdata if you instead flash Siyah kernel to root device and then install titanium backup.

Can't update Galaxy S2 I9100 to 4.1.2 through OTA, please help!

Hi, I was given a Galaxy S2 I9100 with baseband version I9100BOKJ1 T-mobile that has android 2.3.5 installed.
So, I wanted to update it to 4.1.2 through OTA but it says that there are no updates available, what are my options?
Can I just install an official 4.1.2 stock rom through odin? If so, what 4.1.2 stock ROM is compatible with this phone? Thanks!
Yes, you can flash a 4.1.2 stock ROM via Odin. There are plenty of stock ROMs on the internet for our device, most of them are on sammobile.com, but you need to sign in to use it. A simple Google search will show its results. Try to find a ROM matching to your region/carrier.
Think about making a backup of your baseband. There are guides on the internet. If you get big problems with GPS or signal strength with the new ROM, you can flash it back. Some people report the stock baseband solves GPS and signal issues, nevertheless it didn't change anything for me when I tried around switching basebands.
Hope this helps.

Some regions didn't get JB update at all. You can flash your phone using odin.
Go to below link find a none carrier firmware download and flash.

My current rom is xwlsw.
And don't try AOSP stock is always the best.
