im on ota ics now and the camera is so bad, every pic is blurry unfocused crap. i tried all the settings, anyone else having this problem?
Try the modded HQ camera, that seems to be the best fix. Note that you'll have to rename the apk file to CameraTMO.apk and you'll have to delete tmo's camera apk and it's odex file.
Mhm weird and yeah, I'd say root your phone and get the modded cam its worth ot

+1 on that. Having a hell of a time focusing unless its a super bright environment, never had that issue before.
Anyone want to attach the modded cam? Whats been added/changed/tweaked? Thanks!

Wouldn't need the additional files for the extra tweaks to go with the apk?
Yeah I was just gonna say something is casuing it to force close. The camera and camcorder appear but crash when I try to open them.
i dont like the style of the hq camera... i wish someone would mod our camera. (cause i like the way our camera looks)
Heres the original thread to the HQ mod:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533238
I rather the modder get his rightful thanks than linking the zip here directly, .
Do not that after flashing the file, you'll have to go into system/app and delete CameraTMO.apk and it's odex file, look for HTCCamera.apk or camera.apk, I forgot what the name was and rename it to CameraTMO.apk for it to work.
Works really well. Huge file size difference between same resolution phone of same thing having its picture taken! 1.5mb vs almost 4mb. Much more detailed as well. The picture is so pic you have to scroll over to what I was actually taking a picture of or just let it load and then save it to your desktop to check it out. Def able to focus better as well with both regular shots and macro.

Just replace the xml file and use it with the stock camera. It will improve it.

Could you provide instructions on this?
I'm getting ready to unlock/root my phone and was referred to this camera app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533238
From the screenshots I've seen of the UI, I'd say I prefer the stock look as well.
This "replacing of the xml" file, will it still give the benefits of the modded camera but with a stock UI?
Thanks for any help.

I was actually referring to the full zip file with the other files to go along with the apk file, so calm down and I just said to give the modder a thanks due to the fact that the mod is pretty good and yields a nice quality pic, so he deserves that much, relax. I meant no offense.
By the way, I don't see much of a UI difference between the TMO stock and the HTC stock apps, other than the placement of the settings on the opposite side and TMO having a cirlce instead of the square, but ey we all have personal preferences.

The HQ Camera zip installs an xml file and a different Camera.apk called HTCCamera.apk. If you want the new layout for the camera then you have to remove the CameraTMO.apk but you can leave it in and still have an improved image. If your Rom is not deodexed then the file will not install so it must he moved to there locations manually.

Not sure why Samsung messed with the 2.2 3D gallery IMO its not really 3D anymore. It lacks the 3D rotation on image/folder preview when tilting phone. And i noticed in JK6 folders/images take forever to load when opening gallery.

They did mess with it its not the same...I wouldn't have posted this if it was same.... Samsung 2.2 jk2/jk6 gallery lacks 3d movement when tilting phone to landscape and portrait for folder and album view they rearrange with 3D movement were Samsung 2.2 its instant and lack "3D"
I don't know how else to explain it
Pinch preview isn't missing inn Samsung 2.2 gallery i just mentioned its still present in the one i posted.

So I attempted to install this on my vibrant running obsidian. Made a copy of the original apk, put it somwhere else on the phone, then overwrode the one in there with the one posted (using Astro). Now the gallery has dissapeared... Tried putting the old one back, same thing. Rebooted a couple times, no luck.
Any tips?
My JK6 gallery does the whole 3D tilting, pinch-to-preview/move around stuff. Completely stock.

Same here, though I did notice it seems like everything's in fast-forward. Animations aren't gradual and smooth, they're too snappy and it kinda kills the effect.
I installed it, worked fine except when I first open a photo it was pixelated for a few secs before becoming clear....never used to do that. today it suddenly won't open at all force closes???
Great find!

This is an app you can run from your rooted phone to odex your framework and system apps (has option to also odex data/app but its not recommended). The app will automatically remove classes.dex from each apk as well. I've tested this on shift deck and cm7 ROMs also works on og evo. There's no test on the app so if you run it and you're already odex or not on a compatible ROM or whatnot; its still going to run..
Make sure you have a fresh nand before using, just in case.
Recommended usage: Press button "Odex System Framework". Let it do its thing then press "Odex System Apps" (be patient, takes several minutes to complete). While running, don't interrupt it.
Other option "Odex Framework + System Apps" works fine as well but not as safe as running separately.
"Odex Data Apps" isn't recommended, its an option I put in but I don't even use.
Always remember, you must odex framework before system/apps!
Big thanks to Dodgejcr for help with the script.
Download: Odexer version 1.0

Sounds very interesting I'm looking forward to this app.

Odex roms have a larger size but better performance as the odex file is its own entity and "pre-loads" data for the app. In deodex its smaller but the app has to call on the classes dex file in the apk file. Odex roms also create little to none dalvik cache. Deodex rom are "in general" easier to theme...

turkbot, Here is a paragraph I wrote on a dodexing wiki that I wrote explaining the difference and process of deodexing, odexing is pretty much the exact opposite but you can get a good idea of the difference between the two.
Deodexing is the act of removing .odex files from the phone. These files are extensions of the android APK (application packages) files and JAR (code packages that make up most of the android GUI) files located in the system. You can find the .odex files in /system/app/ and /system/framework/. The process of deodexing is done by decompiling the .odex files and recompiling them into a .dex format and placing them inside of the corresponding apk or jar. The purpose of deodexing is to make edits to the JARs or APKs. Most of the code for the files are inside of the .odex, which can not be recompiled once they have been decompiled with out deodexing them. This allows us to theme and add extra features that involve edits to the .smali files (similar to .class files containing java code) inside of the .odex. Deodexing does take up more storage space on the phone and does slow the phone down, although the speed decrease is hardly noticeable and is easily matched by a custom kernel with slight improvements. http://wiki.sdx-developers.com/index.php/How_to_deodex_a_ROM

I posted this on the Evo 4g thread, but figured it might be seen first here since this is where it was originally posted.
Good job man. Previously I've accomplished this with bash scripts. I'd like to see where this goes. Like option to search for bootclasspath and automatically use the it, instead of having a dedicated one (which limits the app). Good job
Edit. If you are interested, I can make this work on Sense.
Edit 2. Man. This has me really intrigued now I looked through the app. One more thing that needs to be implemented is the removal of classes.dex. Once Odexed, you don't need classes.dex. It simply takes up space.

Actually classes.dex is automatically removed. Also, I'm planning on adding the option to select an apk to odex and thinking about finding the bootclasspath maybe by looking in init.rc but that's a thought.

For messaging I presume? Use apk manager to extract the apk and replace the emoticon images with the ones of your choice. I use the ones from GO SMS, which are much better imo. I can provide a more detailed step by step if you'd like to do it.

Use the instructions from this post. I've also attached a zip of the emoticons I use (not flashable). Give it a try and report back. I'll do it if you have difficulty and we can see where you went wrong.
There are 17 images to replace in drawable-hdpi. There's also one (the "embarassed" emoticon) in the drawable folder; you have to replace this one as well. The images in my zip are appropriately named, so just drag and drop.
Good luck.
Its easy to do and use the ICS emoticons but they have to be replaced in the framework as well as mms.apk.

You need to use root explorer and move the Mms.apk to system/app
Make sure to backup your old one (rename it to something like mms.apk.old)
first and when you move the one with the black smileys it will ask if you want to overwrite.
Then reboot and you should be good to go.
Not successful

Running UnNamed 1.3.2 though, not sure if the newer versions may be the reason why its not working properly.

If I say yes now its just a placebo effect in my head.
Have to do some testing with it for a few days and see if its noticeably different or the same.

so, installed perfectly using instructions from post #5. I don't really know what's the difference between uninstalling via Titanium vs. adb removing, but it worked with the Titanium method, and not with adb.
Thanks for the tip on using titanium to backup/uninstall, works for rooted stock as well

I've been using it for about two days now and with the exception of an beta-ish incident I had with it (it stopped working after my first reboot if the phone and I had to reinstall it), I can confidently say that this update makes Swype much, much better. Swype always used to piss me off within the day for the simplest of reasons, but with all the new gestures, dictionary options and (finally) contextual typing, it's hard to put this one down. And it should be mentioned that I'm a huge keyboard junkie, if that exists. I have pro versions for most of the keyboards on the market and constantly switch between them because they generally all disappoint me in one way or another.
The voice recognition is naturally better now that the company has been acquired by Nuance, but it isn't quite up to the accuracy of choice dictation on the iPhone 4s, for whatever reason. Is it better than what it used to be on Swype/Android? Hell yes. In addition, this can do languages other than English, something I found particularly amazing.
All in all, I like it.

The speech recognition still sucks.

I have no idea, but I know it auto updates (maybe not if you remove the installer) so not sure if it will break the theme or not when it does update.
Really missing how it looked on UnNamed.
Going to change the thread title and put a request for a theme.
If someone can provide the apk i can try and take a swing at theming it. Shouldn't be too difficult

I added it to the OP.

Actually just had a look at the new apk... it's completely different so I don't think it'd be possible to just transfer it over from the old one.
I can try and do it manually... we'll see how it turns out.
Good luck, after the holidays i'm going to read up on theming.
I tried doing it myself to change the stock SMS but couldn't get it working ended up using goSMS lol.

I just did a proof of concept, just to see if it works... It's really simple actually!!!!
I did orange and blue (Denver Broncos colors) if you guys want it, just install it like normal.
Here is how to do it:
You take that .apk file thats in the OP, make a few copies of it just incase...
Then you get 7zip, open it up with 7zip... copy all the files in "assets/keyboard" to a new folder on your computer.
The files you need to edit are preceded by "display0_" since we have wvga screens.
The way I did it was open it up in photoshop (the images, that is) and edit the file and save it.
The files I editted were:
background
caps
capsbutton
funcbutton
numbutton
selbutton
textbutton
AFTER EDITTING!!
This is where it gets tricky...
You open that original .apk with the 7zip proggy and you transfer all those images back into it, in the proper folder.
Now you need to sign it using apkmanager or whatever you may want. Open it up in apkmanager, and sign it (using the batch signing folder thing option choice thing).
DONE!
Oops guess my message by xda app didn't go through.
The theme did work perfectly, good job!
Would It be too much to ask for a dark-themed swype like on ICScrewD or unNamed?
Then I can finally update swype

I second this!!
But I am going to try myself with the instructions of samvillian.
Just haven't had time, hopefully this weekend I can start practicing on theming.

I've got most of swype done. Issues im running into is apktool is unable to decompile or recompile a working product. Assume because of the updated version. Ill keep pressing.
First of all, I would like to thank this forum.
I have a Samsung Vibrant T-mobile SGH-T959.
I have up graded from Froyo 2.2 to ICS 4.0.3, via Éclair 2.1. It was successful.
Took me about 3hrs and some heart stopping moments before it work.
I am having a slight problem, the camera stopped whenever I switch the picture size or the resolution.
After it stop, I just open the camera again and it will work with the new resolution.
Is there a solution for this?
Thank you for your input and have a nice weekend.
Side note: How do I make the digital clock bigger on the welcome screen?
Well, the first thing that I can recommend is switching to a more updated ROM. 4.0.3 is pretty dates when there are several 4.0.4 ROMs out there.
I personally skipped over ICS altogether and headed to Jelly Bean. I'm on Paranoid Android and love it. It was updated last night to the latest Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
Camera is good in all the JB builds I've tried.
Thank you
Thank you Toast for your input,
Really appreciate it, will learn how to upgrade to paranoid android.
Have a nice weekend.

Glad to help. Go to the OP of Paranoid Android, download the ROM and Gapps. Instructions are posted in the ROM. You won't regret it.
Hello Toast,
It seems, I can’t find the thread for the Paranoid Android.
Is is under the Vibrant Android Development section?
Sorry about that, Toast.
I think I found it.
If I am not mistaken, I should upgrade first to JB, then to Paranoid Hybrid?
Thank you.
Here you go buddy

Ok this is slightly off topic but I don't want to clutter XDA more and create another thread - I asked this question on the PA thread but figured it wouldn't hurt to put it on this one as well.
Here is what's happening. It is not making thumbnails of the images, it is copying the full size image into the thumbnail db so i end up with a .thumnail file that is as large as my Camera DIR. Also, why are there always 2 thumnail files? They seem to duplicate after i clean one or both up.
Thumbnail databases are .93 Gigs

So this is what the hell has been wrong with gallery/camera in CM10 JB

I think you'll be fine wiping data/factory reset, clear cache and dalvik and flash the ROM (I flash it twice) then flash the Gapps. If you have trouble let us know buddy.

I'm not sure, I saw your post about this in the PA thread. I currently don't have any pics. When I flashed the other day I formatted my internal, I just had all kinds of random old and unused junk. I'll try to take a bunch of pics and see what results I get to compare with yours. I don't see why it would mirror full size images in the thumbnails directory. Seems like that would be overkill! I believe I've seen inquiries in the CM10 and HB threads of similar anomalies.

Thank you Sir.
I have both files but they are small. I'll look into it deeper as well.

Yeah agreed. That would be dumb since thumbnails are supposed to be miniature copies. In any case , I still love JB on the vibrant

It should create a new folder called .thumbnails in DCIM after you reboot
