So many Tutorials & ROMs.. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
So, I decided to install another ROM on my Samsung S2 i9100G - thats why I went to different forums and found so many ROMs and Kernels and Tutorials, that I'm not sure, which one to use (and where the files are up2date)
Ive got a German Model with 2.3.6 (I9100GXXKL4)
and my kernel is on 2.6.35.7
I'd like to use CyagenMod (dont know the exact name) 4.0.4 on my Phone and I already downloaded Odin - but "damn" im scared as hell to brick something with the wrong version lal (I flashed my nokia 5800XM and it was a hell of work )
and do I need to install any kernel? where is the difference between the ROM and Kernel? can I just install a new ROM?
greetings
se7Ro
edit:
DO I need to ROOT my Phone?
and: Is a SD Card neccesary or can I use the phone one which is integrated (16GB)
Third Question: Can I use any Kernel I want? As far as I know now, I need to Root my Phone flashing a Kernel via Odin (I will use Lucifr)
But its a GB Kernel, right? So I cant use any ICS ROM?

If you don't want to root go to www.sammobile.com and pick a ics firmware. They have flashing tutorials. But honestly I wouldn't do anything until you do some research.

Just do this:
Buy
Jig unbrick(ebay)
Some sdcard like 8/4GB (ebay)
Download fromhere
XXLPQ mayby don't care if u want cm9
Flash it
If something goes wrong(bricked bootloader that means ur whole software is bricked) use jig unbrick
Find method of root ( im searching)
Install CM9
Send using xda app.

Before you do anything to your phone, DO NOT INSTALL A I9100 International firmware.. You have a I9100G, It is not in anyway compatible to the intenational phone. READ THE STICKIES FIRST PLEASE.

If u mean that XXLPQ is only for international sgs2 uare wrong read that topic here
Now
I have got plan: buy those thinks bla bla bla
Then here download flash rom what ever wich rom
Then use this to instal CWM recovery and get root. Its very important beacuse without this u wont get CM9(Cyanogenmod9).Now go to CM9 thread
And install CM9 (dont do ''proper CWM (ClockWorkMod)" beacuse u was doing this while rooting

[Q] Does rooting require exact same kernal? Galaxy s2

I am new to the android .and bought my first galaxy s2. I will follow the s2 one click root to root my phone. I need to know if I need the same kernal as my device? My original kernal is JPKG5. do I need jpkg5 insecure kernal and then a jpkg5 secure kernal to root my phone? Or can I change my kernal to some other kernal of my choice?
my galaxy s2 gets pretty hot if I play intense games like asphalt or star legends, it even gets hot if I use mobile internet like EDGE (i guess its 2g internet nott sure) and browse the internet. The battery life sucks. I keep wifi, gps off and it last like 7 hours if I use mobile internet. Heard a different kernal might help.
One last question, what is the purpose of titanium backup? Do I get to restore my phones original self back again easily? Like will it unroot itself and return to the original gingerbread rom if I decide to change to cynogenmod? If titanium backup does not do that, then how can I unroot my phone and then get back to my original gingerbread rom?
Thanks alot for your help...

Welcome to Android I am not sure about the kernel. The purpose of TB is that you can backup all your apps and data and if you flash a new custom rom you can use TB to restore all the apps and data. Its a very powerful application. You can always flash the original stock rom downloaded from Intratechs thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278. Then you will have an unrooted phone. Beware of the custom counter!!

If you are international S2 (i9100) user use CF-Root instead SOC:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Dont use CF-Root or SOC if you are AT&T user, there is specific threads on how to root AT&T devices.
CF-Root is 1 step only, this means for a non experienced user like you (as it's your first android device) less chance to screw up something.
Follow carefully the instructions.
Be sure Kies installed but NOT running (kill kies process) because kies block odin = semi bricked phone.
Takes about 30 seconds
If you need more info feel free to ask here or pm me

im a bit confused, all those stock kernals in that link u gave are kernels and rom? Like if I have cynogenmod rom installed in my fone and then flash my phone again using one of those stock kernels/roms, I would be flashing back from cynogenmod to gingerbread 2.3.3 (JPKG5)?
Also what is the custom counter?
Thanks

Cf-root seems like it will limit me to only one kernel, is it a fact? Is it possible for a gs2 user to use any kernel he desires? because I would like to use a better kernel than jpkg5 but stick to the original gingerbread rom 2.3.3. Then mod it to stop loading the so called bloat somehow using an app. Plus I found cf-root to be a little confusing, can u help me understand this? Cf-root will use the kernel inside the phone and leave it intact plus give me root? Or will cf-root change my kernel permanently?
Thanks for all the trouble everyone, if its ok ill ask more questions if I get stuck, but will try my best to figure it out myself first...thanks again...

If you flash one of those ROMs you will flash from cyanogen to your original. The custom counter counts how many times you flash a custom rom / kernel - it can be a problem if you have to send your phone in for repair. Read more about it.

cf-root is an original kernel with root+cwm inserted. No it dosnt lock you to a single kernel, its just the most easy way to root your phone while keeping your stock rom. When you are rooted you then can flash any kernel or custom rom you want.
You only need to pickup the same (ex: kh3, ki4, kf1 etc..) for the root process, this to have full compatibility during root with the stock rom on your phone, but after successfull root you can flash any kernel/rom for the s2

[Q] Doubts with my SGS2

well these are my questions, i'm looking for some answers i'm sure you can help me or erase these doubts i have.
Phone info:
Unbranded phone bought in USA and used in Argentina (sorry for my english, not really good)
Gingerbread 2.3.4
PDA: i9100UHKI2
PHONE: i9100UHKI1
CSC: i9100TPAKI2
i got my phone 1 day ago the first thing i did was a cf root kernel and my phone was root then i got speedmod kernel and everything ok (So only kernels customizations) but here is my doubt
1) Can i flash any kernel i want? I think i can, but.... haha
2) can i flash now any custom rom i want, for example villain, litening, etc
IF i can, will i have problems with mi 3g network. All the explanation with the csc is not clear on my head (or maybe i can put manually my apn settings, or flash a csc unbrandeed thas my stock rom has)
3) can i flash between any stock rom or this is not recommended
4)if i can flash any custom rom like villain, that custom rom is 2.3.5 and my phone is 2.3.4 is that a problem or not. maybe i need to flash an stock rom 2.3.5.
I have made efs backup, cwm backup, and my stock firmware is on stock firmwares thread so great
that's all thanks in advance guys
this forum helped me a lot.
PS: i have read al the noob guides and faq, and searched on the forum but truly i didn't find my answers and my english is not good enough haha so it's get complicated sometimes to understand clearly the idea.
im not expert but i can answer few of your question..
1. yes u can ( btw u didnt have to root ur phone at all.. since speedmod comes with preroot)
2. yes u can flash any rom u want but some roms isnt compatible with some kernels so u should read carefully which one is compatible
3. im not entirely sure but i think u cant... because different stock roms have different csc which is ur region data... i live in finland so i can only flash nordic roms.. but as i say before not entirely sure
4. about this i have no idea =/

Yup, you can do all of these. I installed cf-root on my own SGS2 aswell and went straight for custom ROM's (im still staying on the cf-root (stock with root) kernel. Didnt need a new one, but it doesnt matters you can do anything anyways).
As long as the rom/kernel you download is for the sgs2 (the clear one, not at&t or any other), everything will be perfectly fine.
As for the 3g problems, just try the rom out (or read feedback/ROM desctiption)

[Q] i9100G soft bricked by installing font.. stuck @ boot logo

hello,
Sorry but not allowed to post in the i9100G sub section yet due to restriction. My friend did the following resulting in soft brick... :silly:
i9100G - indian variant
ics - 4.0.3
rooted with method 2 posted ----------> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679778
it does not installs cwm manager like in cf-root method
downloaded app - rom toolbox pro - for backup
installed new font using the same app - rebooted as asked..
stuck on S2 logo
able to go into download and recovery mode - good sign :highfive:
I read somewhere that I need to flash stock rom using odin and then root again properly using cf-root menthod but since i dont know the correct firmware of his phone, dont know which one to use for flashing.. he dosent remembers it either..
dont know its xxlph or what....
so should i just flash new ics 4.0.4 firmware (any firmware) via odin and then follow the nube friendly cf root method ? is not knowing firmware version will have an impact even if i am installing a completely different new version ?
thanks for the time and consideration... much appreciated...
thanks
Any firmware is fine as long as its for the G variant. DO NOT install firmware meant for the i9100/P/M/T etc coz that will brick the device. The only way in which different firmwares for a device vary is by the modem. Which can always be changed at a later stage.
Bottomline, as long as its a G variant firmware, you can use it. Only preferable to stick to 4.0.3 rather than 4.0.4
Download the firmware from sammobile.com
Good luck

[Q] Assistance needed with first root of SG2 i9100

Hi guys. I have been a frequent visitor and learned alot about android and features. I am ready to root my galaxy s2 i9100
My details are :
Android version: 4.04
Model number gt-i9100
Baseband version: i9100XXLQ6
Kernal version: I9100xxlbq-cl911584
build number: IMM76D.XXLQB
I downloaded
ODIN 1.85
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LQB-v5.6-CWM5
I am not seeing the original kernal file up for download for my version. What else do I need for my root? Is there any advice such as best method and such. Thank you kindly everyone. Mods, if I posted in the wrong section, please move my thread to the correct location.
That's all you need mate. This kernel is declared safe by Chainfire but as any 4.0.4 kernel should not be used to wipe data because of possibility of emmc cap bug rendering your phone bricked. Root with this kernel but make sure to switch to custom safe one before attempting to wipe data.
Best of luck

Essentially flashing using a 4.04 firmware will brick the phone? or is it when I flash, it will be bad to flash using a 4.04 firmware? Sooo confused.
If anyone has the steps what I should do, please tell me. I am worried about bricking.
If I root the phone, when official JB comes out, will I be able to update?
any help guys? The thread isn't very clear what do I do if I have this kernal. Do I downgrade before rooting?
Insted of flashing that Cf root kernel with Odin or Cwm, flash Siyah 4.1.5.

I actually have the same HW version in my new SGS2 and I have checked with eMMC check (downloaded from Google Play) that my chip is safe from "brick bug"
Now the question is: which kernel to choose, CF or Siyah ? I'm planning to use CyanogenMod 10 on this phone, does kernel version matter at all in this case ?
/edit:
ROM will be either original CM10 or one of the variants (like HellyBean for example)

If GotBrickbug app by CF said your chip is safe than it shouldn't matter what kernel you use. Safe hardware.
Personally I always prefer rooting with CF kernels that match my FW version. Then if you're still unsure about the chip... flash siyah, go to advanced (while still in recovery) > reboot recovery. Then wipe data with siyah kernel just to be on the safe side. I always keep siyah 3.5.2 (the first transisiontl ics/jb kernel) for those purposes. CM10 built in kernels are all considered safe so that's the last time you'll ever be worried about it.
Best of luck, man
Thank you very much, I ran emmc check and I have a sane chip.
if I flash with the CF LBQ, what is my next step?

Samsung releases firmware in various regions and with varied carriers. So I bet that till it is officially released it will take time but when it does you will get OTA if your are on 'STOCK' ROM. but if you move away to custom rom then you will have to update manually.

To revert back assuming you didn't do backup before, download 4.0.4 firmware for your region on sammobile and flash it using odin.. Then to upgrade it when official update are up just hit OTA, kies, or flash it via odin the same way like you flash 4.0.4..
If you don't have idea how to flash then google it, theres plenty much tutorials out there.. hope it helps
Ohhhhhh. I get it. Flash using CF, or CM 10, use triangle app to remove warning triangle and if I need to unroot, flash with 4.04 (my region) using odin? Sound pretty simple. Am I missing any steps?

Actually I get confused myself hehe, by "Flash using CF, or CM 10" you mean flash what? The rest are ok..
Well, let's put this simple, Flash the CF-Root for your phone then you're rooted now, if you want to flash custom rom such as cm10 then flash it (the cm10 zip file to be flashed on recovery mode and don't forget to read the cm10 instruction before & after flashing), if you want to get rid of the triangle then do it with triangle away, finally to unroot and revert to stock, just flash stock firmware via odin..

[Q] brick bug

Hi .. i originally rooted my phone using " zirggles " ? it was something on you tube i found ! well it worked untill my s2 updated to 4.0.4 then i lost part of my root. i still have titanium back up ... but if i run root checker it says i don't have proper root. and some apps i cant download. i have checked and i do have an insane chip ! i want to root my phone properly again, but i know with this chip its risky. would it be ok to flash 4.0.3 firmware .. would this get rid of the brick bug ? if so is there somewhere i can download the firmware ? im curently on XXLQ6 or is there another way of rooting my phone properly again ? i have super user on the phone but it says outdated binary. please be understanding as i only joined yesterday and i am a total noob to this all

Hi .. i originally rooted my phone using " zirggles " ? it was something on you tube i found ! well it worked untill my s2 updated to 4.0.4 then i lost part of my root. i still have titanium back up ... but if i run root checker it says i don't have proper root. and some apps i cant download. i have checked and i do have an insane chip ! i want to root my phone properly again, but i know with this chip its risky. would it be ok to flash 4.0.3 firmware .. would this get rid of the brick bug ? if so is there somewhere i can download the firmware ? im curently on XXLQ6 or is there another way of rooting my phone properly again ? i have super user on the phone but it says outdated binary. please be understanding as i only joined yesterday and i am a total noob to this all

4.0.3 firmware is safe, the issue exists only in stock 4.0.4 ICS and if you are on 4.0.4 ICS don't perform any type of wipe, reset etc... Flash 4.0.3 firmware or lower version's like gingerbread or any custom rom with custom kernels, also custom kernels for 4.0.4 version's are safe theoretically but i still wont recommend it because I have seen people brick their phone from CWM, so the problem is with the kernel which has eMMc cap erase command, most custom kernels don't have it, but be warned an old Siyah kernel has it so use the newest one.
For the sake of safety i recommend that you flash 4.0.3 via Odin.

ok thanks for the advice .. if i was to use a Siyah kernel, which one would you suggest ? would i have to use odin to do this ? i have CWM on my phone, so could i do it from the phone rather than odin ? if i can, would i need to put the new kernel on the external SD card ?
thanks a million

dwnld the tar file of siyah v4.1.5 (for galaxy S2) and flash the same using 'Odin', since its the best way ma8
Latest Siyah 5.0.1 should not be a problem as well. Using it for a week now.

Use the latest Siyah its pretty amazing, i consider Odin as the safest method, even though if you can obtain Siyah as a zip file you can do it via CWM which is also a pretty safe and easy method for noobs, if you downloaded a tar flash via Odin or Mobile Odin.
