Ok I recently got a tf201. I have finally decided 2 go for it and trying 2 get a custom rom.
Untill now (using a SGS) I needed 2 root the phone then get a custom kernel then apply the rom.
How is the procedure for a prime? I tried 2 root but shortly found out that i had the .21 update, Im guesing I can downgrade not sure.
does "unlock" = root?
can some1 clarify the process tree to get to a new rom?

You will have to unlock via the asus unlock tool (you can just google that and get it directly off of the Asus website). Then you will have to use Fastboot to flash CWM onto your device. From there the usual, back up the stock rom, and install any custom rom of your liking.

unlock tool from asus website. ok but can u explain 1 thing 2 me? if its on asus website why does it void your warranty? and root and unlock are different?
If you are planning to flash a custom rom, check out androwookie v1.2 its good.
Unlock gives you the ability to install a custom recovery e.g. cwm, you then use this to flash a pre-rooted rom. Root just means having access to the root directory. It enables access to features and functions that are normally made inaccessible.
Using the fastboot method is pretty simple and guides can be found easily. I just did it yesterday after having previously only rooted and installed cm 7+9 on my sgs2.

It's just one of their stipulations. Most manufacturers are like that in regards to using their unlock tools.
Root = enhanced permissions to run apps like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer (if you're modifying anything in the/System directory), stuff like that.
Unlock = your bootloader is "unlocked," you can now put ClockworkMod recovery on your device, flash ROMs and kernels. These things can't be done while only being rooted.

so with unlocking the device I wont have root privs? so things like you said titanium backup wont work?
1 more thing. is unlocking considered harder? and does any1 have a video of unlocking so that I know what I can expect b4 freaking out?

Unlocking doesn't instantly get you root, it just makes rooting a lot easier to do. Like they said, unlock, put CWM on it, flash a rooted ROM and bam, rooted. But correct, apps like Titanium won't work if you're only unlocked, you would need root.
As far as I know, unlocking just requires downloading the .apk from Asus' site, installing it and going through the prompts. It doesn't sound hard at all. I personally don't know the ins and outs of it, as I never unlocked my Prime, but that's all it really sounded like. Sounds pretty simple. I believe there's some videos on it on YouTube though.

No problem! And yep, the link in the first post is a great looking guide for unlocking. Nice and easy, step by step. And after you have unlocked, just download ROM Manager from the market and you can flash CWM through the app itself. From my understanding that's the easiest way to do it, at least. Sorry it's been a few days since I responded, I haven't really been checking out the Q&A section lately

I just recently bought my Transformer Prime, and like an idiot I didn't check to see if there was a root method for the new update. So I'm now updated to 9.4.2.21 and used Asus's Bootloader Unlocking tool to unlock my boot loader and I managed to install CWM. I made a backup of my current stock OS, and I currently am downloading Virtuous Prime - based on the WW 9.4.2.21 build - would I be able to install that? I don't need to be rooted in the current OS to install this ROM correct? I just wanted to make sure before I brick my new tablet for doing something stupid... Please let me know!

Why don't you guys boot into cwm make a nandroid back up and then attempt installing it? But most likely it won't work...
Well my download has 15 minutes left and from reading the instructions on the ROM itself, it seems that the only thing it needs is CWM so I'm going to try it out... I just hope I don't get bricked xD. Now would be the time to tell me not to do it if someone knows! Thanks!
If bootloader unlocked & CWM installed then Yes you are good to go, no need to be rooted to install custom rom
Well so far its good to go, I got it installed and its booting for the first time without a hitch. Got my stuff restored from my Google account and I'm rooted So glad that worked.
Heres what I did if someone wants to do the same:
1. Unlock the bootloader using the Asus Unlock tool.
2. Flash CWM using this guide

3. Create a Nandroid backup.
4. Install the ROM through CWM.
5. Reboot like normal.
6. Enjoy being rooted !
Maybe I'm being dumb here, but I don't think this gives you root access.... You are unlocked with a custom ROM, but I don't think there is a way to root on .21 yet. Am I incorrect? Still new to the prime here, so maybe I'm missing something. Thanks for the update though!

Well if your running Virtuous Prime it comes pre-rooted on 9.4.2.21 and I've already created backups using Titanium Backup Pro no problems at all. In fact its really stable, been listening to music for a while with no problems. Yesterday I watched Transformers 3 - ironic I know xD - and had no problems at all and I ended up getting about 12 hours of battery life with the screen and WiFi going all day .
i'm in the same situation. one thing i was wondering about. is the process of flashing roms in CWM different ? i thought i had read that you have to do it a bit differently than most phones

From my experience on Android devices (Droid X, Droid X2, Galaxy Nexus, and now Transformer Prime) CWM has been a bit different for each, but for the most part once you get CWM in, its just a matter of following the instructions of the ROM maker.
Virtuous Prime is different when flashing because it has a GUI when installing - something I've never seen before - which works quite well, its a nice touch.

Well if you go to TransformerPrimeRoot.com and follow the instructions there for flashing CWM, (of course make sure that you still boot normal after doing it) make a nandroid backup, then just flash like normal. When you get your ROM on make sure that you download RomManager from the market so you can get the latest CWM flashed as the version from that website is an older one, but it seems to work fine.
Keep in mind if you don't see the USB icon when in that icon list, it will show up when you unlock your boot loader.

Sorry to ask the same question twice, but do I need to save the ROM zip file anywhere specifically, or can I simply download the file directly onto my prime and then flash from my download folder???? I feel so dumb about this one

As long as you have CWM installed you can put the .zip ROM anywhere. Most of the time I keep em in the root of the device (its just easier to find). Then just use Choose install from .ZIP or whatever the button is, and navigate like normal to install it. Make sure you make a backup!
Im up and running now. Thanks for the help! So should this root access stick now even if i wanted to flash aokp? Or if i wipe data do I lose root?

All the custom roms on here should already be pre-rooted so yeah.

No you have root. I just did it yesterday. Unlock. Install cwm. Backup. Flash custom rom. You'll be rooted.

If you have CWM installed you do not need to root. just flash the rom. (IK people already said this but i just wanted to make a quick clear post)
Ok I wasnt paying attention when the guy at best buy was messing with my tablet I bought today and I think it updated to ics 4.1 or whatever its on now. But I have managed to unlock my tablet but I cant seem to root it for some reason. Is their anyway to go back to the factor honeycomb or am I F'ed?

If you have unlocked the bootloader just boot into CWM make a nandroid backup then flash a custom rom and you should be rooted with a custom rom. If you're looking for a more custom feel. Try AOKP (All Open Kang Project) they have a extension in settings app thats called rom control and lets you change a lot of things. Then maybe if you're tired of the ICS blue scheme try out my theme for AOKP =) link is in my sig.
Theres really no reason to stay stock since you've already unlocked the bootloader so yeah. But if you're looking for a stock asus rom, but with some optimizations your next best bet would be Virtuous and WSG Roms.
I don't know the relationship between unlocking and rooting....but if you're on a stock ROM, it can't be rooted yet....the 'root tool" hasn't been developed yet.....but I don't know how unlocking affects the process

If you unlocked BEFORE it was updated, then you're right....read the threads on recovering from that situation.
I guess my question is, are you sure it's unlocked (the answer is probably YES), but I had a rooted V15, with some modded files....and got the dead guy.....had to update to v21 via the SD card.

Did you or did you not unlock your prime using the asus unlock tool app? If you did after you have unlocked your prime.
1. Go to market and download rom manager
2. Install CWM via rom manager.
3. Download a Custom Rom and transfer it to your tablet.
4. Boot into CWM Via Make sure its powered off, hold power and volume down till you see some white fine printed words on your upper left hand side. Then hit the Volume Up.
5. Once your into CWM using your Volume buttons (Power button to select) to navigate to Backup/restore & create your first nandroid backup.
6. Install the custom rom you have downloaded.
7.Boot it up.
8.Profit????
My device is unlocked i went through the vipers way too root/unlock device, it says that it rooted it but I went to see if superuser was on my tablet it wasnt. so i downloaded via market place and went to update the binary and its say busybox not found then says ok. checking md5sum okay then install path fail.

Again & again i must stress the fact that you should search and do some reading. Vipers Tool does not work with .21 so can you now boot into your tablet.
Root = allowing you to have system file access
Unlock = allowing you to install a custom recovery, thus letting you install custom roms.
Unlocking voids your warranty, while root does not. If you don't mind the voided warranty boot into your tablet and open the app drawer and look for the unlocking tool. Then run it and you should be unlocked. Then follow my previous post.

That still tells me its not rooted. can I downgrade to a older version like.20 or something. I did it once with my Evo4g.

Bit of an Android noob here but I am quite tech savvy. I am gonna root my Prime and install Androwook on it but first I would just like to go over some things. I have had a look around at a lot of guides and that and have figured to do this I need to unlock the bootloader using ASUS' own app fro their support, then I need to install CWM on it through the unlocked bootloader and then I can backup and install new ROMS. But which point is the root, I can't seem to find a clear answer or is it a whole new step all together? And also could you please guide me if this is completely wrong because I am paranoid about my Prime and would hate to end up with it bricked. Sorry if this is sort of in the wrong area or a bit of a repeated question, just paranoid!

I saw your post completely randomly, but I think I have your answer. Rooting your device can be done at any point by either unlockroot.com or DoomLord's toolkit somewhere on the site. It has no effect on installing roms/unlocking bootloaders. It simply gives you more control over a device. I hope I understood your question and helped. Good luck

Well unlocking the bootloader SHOULD be safe if yu're unlocking by offficial means. What can damage your device is flashing the wrong files. So be REALLY careful with what you flash on your device and always double-check the tutorials in the given thread

and as above post says, most things should be very save so long as you follow to the dot.
when it says DO NOT POWER THE SYSTEM DOWN, just follow what it says and don't power things down, you should be fine
download things that are for you ONLY don't go to other threads trying to install iOS onto your prime (not that its possible.... that i know of)

It is worth noting that you probably don't need to go through the root process if you are installing a custom ROM. Many (most?) custom roms grant super-user permissions by default.
well it does say in the requirements of Androwook that it requires a root.
one suggestion though, use TWRP as your recovery mode. quite handy...

The reason you root your device is to gain superuser permissions. Most OEM versions of Android don't give you SU permissions because it is possible you could mess up your device by deleting systems files or changing hidden settings. However most custom ROMs give you superuser permissions by default.
After unlocking your Prime, I would recommend installing TWRP using the fastboot method, so that you don't need to install root first. Then you can backup your stock and flash AndroWook from TWRP. AndroWook is already rooted, so you won't need to worry about adding extra steps for root.

OK, thanks for the replies. I think I will wait a little and test the device for any major problems before I root and unlock because I don't want to have to send it back for an RMA.
So from what I have read around I need to:
1. Unlock bootloader using the ASUS tool
2. Install CWM or similar and backup my current ROM although I have seen trouble with installing 2.1 with CWM so I think I might use TWRP
3. Install Androwook 2.1 and from what I have read skip some things like bravia engine, sd wipe sqlite vacuum and add sio io scheduler.
There seem to be so many options with the installer which makes it a bit confusing but first up I think I will use the 1.6GHz Kernel or something and keep it mainly stock.
I'm new to this rooting process regarding my nexus 5. I read all the other posts of rooting nexus 5 and I've downloaded all the necessary things to get start rooting my nexus. For that I'm using CF-Auto root method of chainfire's.
After reading those threads I realized that I have to unlock the bootloader which wipes my data and it's okay with me and the thing I want to know is that will my original ROM will get replaced by a another custom rom If I goes through this process. I want to keep my original stock rom with me.
Can somebody please tell me whether my ROM will get replaced by using CF-Auto Root?
And it it is going to replace. Can I root my phone without replacing my rom and how to do it. Direct me to a post and I will follow it

You dont have to worry. it wont replace your stock rom period. CF auto root just adds root permissions. make sure you unlock your boot loader (I assume you have read all about unlocking bootloader) first and theres plenty of guides in nexus 5 forum or just google search Nexus 5 boot loader unlock.

I'm about to root my nexus now using TWRP custom recovery. Can you please tell me whether I can get OTA updates after rooting my phone. Do I have to replace the ROM with the new image or Can I only get the updates without flashing again and wiping off my data.

I dont have much of experience with nexus after nexus s 2years agoand now im on samsung. as far as I know, No, you wont be able to update via OTA after you installed a custom recovery. but Im not 100% sure though. theres nothing to lose so why dont you give it a try. however you can always make a titanium or loads of backup methods after root and just restore after the update. even CWM or TWRP have custom restore options.

I have a Sony Xperia Tablet Z, 64GB WiFi (SPG312) running stock 4.3, and I can not root this thing. I've tried several different methods to no avail. Does anyone on here know how to root this thing? I'm ultimately trying to install CM11.
Either go back to 4.2, root with Doom's Rootkit, then install a recovery, and install 4.3 already rooted, or unlock your bootloader, install CM kernel, use the recovery built in to install the SuperUser zip, then flash stock kernel again.

So unlock the bootloader? How do I go about that? And after that I can install CM right from there? That sounds like the one thing I haven't tried.

Follow that link. It's pretty easy. Just make sure you have all the tools in hand. Shouldn't take more than a hour to read everything and do the procedure, if you have everything ready.
It's mentioned there, but remember that it will void your warranty and, with Android 4.3 or lower, on stock ROMs, you will not have Bravia Engine working. Also, in any version, Music and Video Unlimited will not work anymore.
Another big tip: Go to the Xperia Z section (the phone one), and on the sub categories, can enter one called Cross Device Development, or something along those lines, and look for a thread with the name TA backup. If you do the long process, of going back and such, backup your keys. Should come in handy in the future.

u need to download flashtool and find a 4.1.2 rom for your device...
then you can either use framaroot 1.91(gandalf exploit) or use doomlords root setup...
after that you can install phill'z recovery...

unlocking your boatloader is not really applied to you,you only need it if you want to install custom roms...but before you do search a bit around to find hou you can backup your drm keys aka .ta partition.
Make sure you downgrade to 4.2 and root using http://nut.xperia-files.com/?dlid=V...jb3ZlcnkyLjcuMTIzLUJFVEEuaW5zdGFsbGVyLnppcA== option 3 then backup your TA partition before unlocking your bootloader, or theoretically you'll lose warranty

Unlock bootloader > flash any cm10-11 kernel that has recovery built in > boot to recovery > flash SuperSU > flash 4.4.2 stock kernel back (from FTF)
