[Q] Scratched Screen already...Anyone else? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I thought this Gorilla Glass 2 two was supposed to be tough, had my Galaxy Nexus since day one it was released and only got a small scratch (which was my fault) with it's "Crappy" tempered glass. I have the S3 since the 2nd of June and already have a scratch from close to he speaker down about 2 inches or more long...crazy...
I don't even know how it got there..just noticed it now, didn't throw it or do anything just been putting it down on the desk and sometimes in my backpack but not up against anything that should scratch it.....
Gorilla Glass 2...ppffttt...I thought I was going to have a scratch free screen for at least a year! haha.
Anyone else got any scratches? I'll try and upload a pic of it soon.
Jerems

Get a screen protector. There is already a thread about it which says gorilla glass my ass.
Gorilla glass is resistant to keys but looks like it is not resistant to sand. That may have be the reason.

Thanks,
Yah I looked at them, just always hated having a screen protector, screen never looks as good, and I really liked how this screen shows only 5% of the fingers marks I would get on the Galaxy Nexus.
I guess that's the risk you take going naked.
jerems

Gorilla Glass 2 DOES help to preventing scratches to the screen, but not scuffs. It will help prevent you from creating deep, visible scratches but minor scuffs can still be visible in direct sunlight.

I'm riding bare-back too. Was going to have a screen protector but it didn't very nice. I'm just trying to be extra careful about how I place my phone and what pocket it goes in.
Probably will eventually get a protector once the honeymoon period is over.

On subject though , I've applied a screen protector straight from the box due to my old galaxy nexus obtaining scratches easily. Strange because my S2 was bare back all of its life with not a mark on it. So for safeness always bag up

Be carefull man

I've been rocking out with nothing so far as I haven't seen even the small scratch in direct light but after reading this I may just have to buy a protector.

My screen is also scratched..... i´ve never used protectors or something... my old (over 1 year old) Galaxy S2 hast no scratch at all....

What is the point of a screen protector ... (?)
Corning has a video on youtube.
Search for "How tough is Corning® Gorilla® Glass 2? Corning puts it to the test."
(I can't post the link, xda-developers doesn't let me post links)
If that is even partially true then I don't quite see the point of the screen protector.

I think it is not though. I am keep using screen proctector and condom all the time

This is what I thought too....but no....I tried to take a picture of it but it's one of those one you need to find the right lighting to see it....but it's definitively there...if you run your finger nail across the screen you can feel it...
All my previous phones, Desire, Desire HD, BB Torch, Galaxy Nexus all never with screen protectors and only the Desire HD and Nexus got scratched due to being drunk and putting my phone and my keys in the same pocket for a night...
A scratch is like Herpes I guess...one bad drunk choice, one night will affect you for the rest of it's life. haha.

I reckon GG2 is a huge gimmick compared to GG.
I've had my Galaxy S2 for the better of 1 year with and without cases. I've dropped it flat on its face, on it's side, it's back and it has come into contact with plenty of things that could've potentially scratched the phone and nothing.
Had my GS3 for just over a week it dropped off a table flat first and noticed a lovely 2 inch long scratch in the middle of it. Only viewable in direct sunlight with a black background BUT STILL a scratch is a scratch.
And when the GS3 is supposed to be THE phone of the year disappointed that GG2 is worse than GG.

Jumping into this debate a little late maybe, but none the less, I have the same experience as you guys. Had the sgs 2 for more than a year, not a scratch... Got the sgs3,and got the first scratches in no time! I have had it almost a year now, and the scratches is becoming MANY! Is there anything to do about them, or do I have to live with it until the sgs 4 comes around?

Samsung Galaxy S II has been designed with Gorilla Glass? No need of Screen Guard?
I have seen 2 sites saying Samsung Galaxy S II has been designed with Gorilla Glass so I want to make sure. http://androidcommunity.com/samsung-galaxy-sii-gorilla-glass-confirmed-20110503/ Lost another site link.is that true?
Of course SGS II has Gorilla Glass. But I am still really confused that it will or will not need a screen protector! I really don't like them but I think it's better to have one rather than scratching that beautiful 4.27" screen. What do you guys think?
Thanks for putting that link up.

OK Thanks and I think it is 100% better getting a screen Protector for safety. It is better to get a Rs.100-500 screen guard instead of spending money on a screen after getting scratch on the screen.I am using 1 already and kept 1 as spare
Scratches WILL occur on gorilla glass, but they are less likely to be seenwhen compared to other screens.
So buy a screen protector.

Hmm..I already ordered the 2nd one from Scratchgard.in, Rs.499, so it's costly, still I've read a lot of users posting that they didn't use any screen protector for more than one year wit GG and also they used it roughly, still no scratches on it. Yes I know Gorilla Glass is scratch resistant but not proof.
I'd like some users to post here who are not using any protective screen and post feedback here, if there is any scratches appearing or not.

There's already a LOT of threads talking about this exact topic. Yes, gorilla glass is tougher than your average glass, but it's not scratch-proof, so I personally don't see the point in taking the risk. Gorilla glass can and will get scratched.
Get a screen protector and never have to worry about scratches, or don't get one and always worry.
Guys i can highly recommend getting this screen protector you really cannot tell that you even have a protecter on your screen, after paying all that money for this phone im not taking any chances.

I have had my nexus one for about a year and it has a Gorilla Glass screen. I don't have a screen protector on and I have dropped it several times on asphalt and other surfaces and I don't have any scratches on my screen. I am waiting for the SGS2 to come out on sprint (hopefully) and I won't be bothering with a screen protector.

good for you but id be more "better to be safe than sorry" and for a few quid for a screen protector like the Ultra Olephobic which you wouldn't even notice it was on i believe it's definitely worth getting.
Does the SGP ultra... have problems with air bubbles or orange skin?
I tried a couple of screen protectors with both nexus s and gs2 and I think I'm more bothered by bubbles and orange skin then scratches
I read in quite a few posts about light scratches, most probably due to the anti-fingerprint coating on the glass. But I wont get a screen protector. In the WM times with resistive screens you had to get one because the screens could get scratches with just your fingernail or the stylus, but they all (even the expensive ones) looked bad. So on my HD2 I didn't bother with a screen protector and don't regret it because after over 1,5 years of intensive use (otherwise it was in my pocket or on the stone floor besides my bed) without any cases or screen protectors, my HD2 doesn't even have one single scratch (and I mean the whole device). I just had to remove the paint of the battery cover because it came off on the edges where I hold it, but I would have done that anyway because it looks better, as you can see in this thread. I hope my SGS2 proves to be as good as my HD2.

No it doesn't, honestly i can barely tell mine is on it really is that good just take time to apply it properly there are videos on XDA which are useful regarding this, i did read reviews beforehand and most were favourable but after applying it i really am impressed with it, scrolling is still as smooth as ever, sure you'll get fingerprints and smudge marks but you'd get that on the screen anyway just wipe it off.

Even though it says that the screen is scratch resistant, I wouldn't take the chance. When I got my SGSII, I went ahead and searched for a pouch and a screen protector. Money well spent!
I have it from 1 month ago, without any protector a no scratches. I transport my SGS2 in my pocket always.
For those of you who say that they aren't worried about their phone scratching because its always in their pocket, I would still recommend you getting one, purely because of the fact that Gorilla Glass is vulnerable to SAND and DUST. Sand particles have a very high hardness rating exceeding that of Gorilla glass, so it will carve up your pretty little phone without a care in the world. Simply wiping the screen cover with a cloth that has a particle of sand on it, can scratch the screen, not to mention the original oleophobic coating Samsung put over the Gorilla Glass, which itself is very vulnerable.
I can also vouch for the SGP Ultra Oleophobic Screen Protector. Hands down the best balance of everything a screen protector should have. I've used some no name brands, the Zagg ones as well as the SGP Ultra Crystal one before, and none can compare.
The SGP Ultra Oleophobic beats the Ultra Crystal hands-down simply because it repels oil much better, and can be cleaned with one wipe of a shirt or cloth. On the other hand, the ultra crystal clings to fingerprints and oil like a fat kid to a candy bar.
Both however, exhibit zero rainbow effects, air bubbles or orange peel effects. For about 30 minutes after putting the oleophobic one on, there is a bit of rubbery/slightly sticky feeling on the protector, but it goes away after some use or a bit of cleaning with a microfibre cloth. I'd also recommend not applying the protector on vertically, from speaker to microphone, but rather, from left to right. It is MUCH easier to align this way, and much easier to retry if you messed up the first time.
I've had many people who've played with my phone ask me why I don't bother putting on a screen protector, and when I tell them to look again, they are genuinely surprised they didn't realize it was there.
TL;DR: get a screen protector, because sand (which is actually harder than gorilla glass) and dust can and WILL scratch your screen eventually. also, SGP Ultra Oleophobic beats everything else hands down.
I think Sammy will send the gorilla glass as OTA update when Android Weedcake 2.5.5 hits the market sometime in the distant future.

Sgs2 doesn't have gorilla glass?

Well I'm kinda pissed my phone already has a scratch on the screen after 1 month and its annoying the crap out of me. My captivate doesnt have any scratches after a year of use without protecters, does the SGS2 not have gorilla glass? I love everything about this phone except the weak screen and will be frustrated if I have to worry about scratches on my screen. I hate screen protecters die to the feel of them on my finger tips.

Hi Black,
in every SPEC list that has been officially published and watching all the youtube vidoes the unit is supposed to sport Gorilla Glass...
Very sorry to hear about your scratch but know that it's wasn't caused by a metal object... It would have to be some sort of STONE or CERAMIC, kitchen countertop, flooring, bathroom tile, that would have scratched your SGS2...
Totally agree with the screen protector though... just very sorry about the scratch... Ouch!
It does have Gorilla Glass... but that dosent guarantee that your screen will never get scratches.
I keep my phone in a separate pocket from keys and everything else so it dosent get scratches.
These phones aren't going to be resistant to scratches no matter what they claim. I've only had my phone for a month and if I did not have a screen protector on I would be in the same boat as you. Cheaper to replace screen protectors than the glass.
Gorilla glass is a bullshiet gimmick anyway. I had a Motor-Atrix and kept that shiet in a lint-free cloth pouch everywhere I went and was meticulous in the amount of care I gave it to ensure it wouldn't have any scratches on it. Well... lo and behold one day I take a look at it, there are scratches all over it from who knows what.
I think gorilla glass is meant to ensure the screen itself doesn't shatter into a million pieces when dropped instead of preventing minute scratches. But as far as scratches go, that's a bunch of bullshiet. Whenever someone gets a new phone they should slap a screen protector on it as soon as possible.
Like the dude before me said: "Cheaper to replace screen protectors than the glass." He speaks the troof.
I don't think you know what gorilla glass is...
Gorilla glass isn't totally scratch-proof, no glass is.
The reason why people like gorilla glass is because it doesn't get too many scratches and is very shatterproof.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
nothing is 100% scratch proof.
If you take a sharp and hard object and scratch the surface of hardened steel, you can create scratch. Gorilla glass is not as hard as some of the hardened steel.
I used my Captivate (Gorilla Glass) for over a year with no screen protector, only the bodyglove rubber case and never had a single scratch on the screen. It even slid off the roof of my car at 25MPH onto the street one morning when I forgot I had set it up there.
I now have the SGS2 and same deal. I have a casemate barely there whose lip comes up and keeps the glass from touching flat surfaces but otherwise no other screen protection and although it is only a month old it still looks like it did when I took it out of the box...after I wipe the fingerprints off of it.
A guy I work with has a DroidX that is over a year old and his looks like it was dragged behind a 4x4 off road at high speeds for an hour after he had it for 6 months.
It all just depends on where and how you use your phone. When in doubt, buy a protector.
Its got gorilla glass alright BUT so did my last phone (samsung Focus) and it scratched much easier then I expected, hence the first thing I did when I got my GS2 was put a screen protector on.. Gorilla glass's scratch resistance is a bit overrated..
wow, i used my cappy for over a year (~15 months) without a screen protector or case and never got a single scratch on it front or back... i don't plan on putting either on my SGS2 either. i guess i'm just lucky in that regard.
I had exactly the same mind set but my sgs2 scratched.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
Gorilla glass is scratch resistant, but not scratch proof.
From my experience if you put the screen with a key ring all the time it will still get scratch.
Gorilla glass is mostly shatter proof then scratch proof. the difference is if you drop the phone you may get a scratch but most likely not shatter the glass.
Sent from my Galaxy S II - I777
I don't know, I used my Captivate for about a year, and I assumed it would be indestructable with the Gorilla Glass and the Body Glove Case. Bad news, some parts from the top got chipped off, either from throwing the phone against the wall and maybe also the several times I dropped it in a parking lot and down a few steps. But through all of this, the screen remains scratch free, except with one really small scratch that only appears in a certain angle with a lot of light. Just wish the rest of the phone was as indestructable as the Gorilla Glass tbh...
I survived over a year with a naked Captivate with no scratches. My wife on the other hand scratched the back almost immediately, and did quite a number on the screen. She just throws hers into her purse, I have a dedicated, empty, phone pocket, and always face the glass in, not out.
The gorilla glass isn't perfect, but its better than others out there.

Go to Owen's Corning and read what they say about Gorilla Glass. It is much harder than generic glass, but it's still glass, and there are lots of things you encounter in every day life that are harder.
As others have stated, it's stronger but not impervious. Individual experience will vary. It's not that you dropped it that matters, it's how it landed, and that's going to be different *every* time a phone gets dropped. Some landings will be worse than others. Doesn't mean the glass isn't as good, only that you had a less "lucky" outcome...

Getting rid of scratches

This is probably a question most of us have faced, I just wanted to see if there was anything different with Gorilla Glass. I received my Galaxy S3 on release date and now I have hairline scratches on the screen if I hold it at an angle. It really bothers me, and I wanted to know if any of you had a way to fill in the scratches or what?
I wish I could help, I have no idea how to deal with scratches on glass. I slapped on a invisishield 2 hours after I bought mine. Ive done this with my last 3 phones, I know if I wait, it will get scratched. To make you feel better, the first night I had my GS3, I was having a smoke on my patio and I went to sit down and my phone fell out of my pocket onto the concrete. It was only about a 2-3 foot drop, but I almost had a heart attack ! I didnt see anything at first , but later I noticed a nice gouge in the chrome bezel on the left corner. Totally sucks! I still have not bought a case .

I just picked some up from ATT until my Otterbox case comes in. I think it was a "Moshi" or something like that. I got it heavily discounted from the corp store. And to be honest its a pretty nice screen protector so far! Easy to apply and take off to clean.
What about you? I hear good things about SGP. Easy on the wallet and great quality.
I haven't received my gs3 yet but I have had the Droid since the day it came out and I keep it in my pocket with my keys and everything. It has very small scratches but nothing that you can see with the screen on.
I can't imagine the GS3 being any less scratch resistant.
No scratches at all. Always put it in my pocket and no screen protector. Had my SGS2 for 8 months without getting any scratches on the screen without a screen protector.
I got a pretty deep scratch right in the middle of mine... I think from a piece of sand or grit or something. I dropped the phone from like 2 feet, it slid off the couch onto the hardwood floor before I got my case and screen protector I was pretty upset, especially after seeing these videos of people going at it with knives and screwdrivers and whatnot with zero damage. Had my nexus one for like 2.5 years no scratches on the glass...
I keep mine in my pocket all day no scratches yet. Don't like screen protectors they make the screen look crappy

I have a couple of little micro scratches that can only be seen if the light hits the screen at the right angle. No big deal at all. I hate screen protectors.
Yup, went in at about 10 am today, finally left around 10:45 with my new phone and it had light small hairline scratches on the side of the phone. I hadn't even touched it other than to login and download a few apps. My hands were clean and I didn't put it in my pocket, as I walked outside I noticed the scratches because of the daylight glaring on it.
I took it back and they exchanged it for me.
I am on the no screen protector and no scratches bandwagon.
Release day gs3.
Also release day gs2 that didn't every have a screen protector and no scratches.
And I do not baby the phone.
I don't baby my phone either but managed to get a scratch on the very first day. All I can remember doing was holding several phones together walking in from my truck and it got a scratch from some sand on the back of one case that was up against the S3 screen. Way too easy if you ask me. I took my original Zagg off of my nexus and put it on the S3. Can't see it now though.

I got it on release day for sprint, about 2 days ago my girlfriend borrowed it quickly to make a call while I had it out playing with it, she handed it back and I saw a smudge. Turned out the smudge was a little cluster of 5 light scratches, tiny though.
Earrings are the devil. It's not even like they were diamonds or anything super expensive, just cheap daily wearers.
I was a little bummed immediately (hid it well though to not make her feel bad, lol) but really they are only noticeable if the screen is off and you're trying to look for them. Now it's officially mine
So yeah, guess I should of thought ahead but being that I don't wear earrings it never even occured to me in the moment. Still not going to grab a screen protector, I'm sure with how I abuse my phone in 8 months or so I'll end up having to get an insurance replacement anyway lol.
Nope, had a screen protector on it since day 1
I dont have any scratches. I kept the in-box screen cover for almost a week until Realook started shipping their dry-type protectors. Now I got them and I can recommend to anyone. No change to screen quality and tocuh feel. Had Realook on my Vibrant for 2 years and served well.

I let the Verizon salesman get me to buy their overpriced protectors (3 for $15...) I really don't like it. It's as wide as the screen, but long enough to cover the Verizon logo on top, and the softkeys on the bottom. It has cut outs for the camera and the light sensor.
What I don't like, is that despite the best efforts of the Verizon salesman (and he did try his hardest, there isn't a spec of dust under the cover) the edges don't stick. This is because the phone's glass curves to the edge. This leaves a tiny bit of the protector that isn't stuck down. Not only does this look bad, but it's also going to attract dust and pocket lint to get in there.
Furthermore, the screen protector also detracts from the aesthetics of the phone, it shows finger prints much more than the gorilla glass 2 does, and it adds a very slight color tint.
I think I'm going to remove it and just go without.
If you like Zagg then xtremeguard already has the DNA protectors available. Current sale means they are only 5 bucks a pop. I have used them before and was very pleased.
That is strange I got the Verizon screen protectors and don't have the issue ..however mine isn't edge to edge .. did he give you some type of aftermarket or does it have the droid stamp on it ..?
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
The Verizon protectors not covering the entire screen (not edge to edge, only the part that's illuminated) is a deal breaker for me. I'll just keep shopping around.
Also, I have nothing against Zagg. I've used Zagg on two devices and they held up great without any of the (noticeable) orange-peeling effect I've read about. My only big complaint with them is the outrageous price.

The ArmorSuit MilitaryShield Screen Protector is the best!
Are screen protectors even necessary? I owned my DROID X for 2 yrs without a screen protector and it looked as good as the day I bought it. That only had Gorilla Glass 1, it looks like Gorilla Glass 2 is supposed to be thinner is all, and I assume the same strength.
I am not for one going to put one on. Besides I love how silky smooth the screen is, and despise others with their sticky rough screen protectors.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
Because of the curved edges the display has, I doubt there will be ones that will cover the whole thing, unless they come curved... I don't use screen protectors, but for those that do, that's most likely all you will get.
The more I use the phone, the more I'm thinking about just skipping the screen protector this time around. It seems pretty substantial on its own and the great, smooth feel is something I wouldn't want to lose (along with the clarity of the awesome screen, too).

I just can't use screen protectors no matter what. Some of them have a haze foggy look to them, others feel a tad sticky, and sometimes I'll have the tiniest dust particle under the glass or just a small bubble around one of the edges. <<<---- Each, and everyone of these drive me nuts! Also the touch never feels the same, or as smooth. I don't know about most of you, but I'm very anal about my phones, and never had any glass damage, or scratches for that matter.

I work in construction sites a lot. And I use my flash light app a lot. I will sometimes lay my phone screen down above the ceiling. I have a Gnex right now... went naked with that and it was a mistake. I have 2 or 3 small hairline scratches and I take pretty decent care of my phone. I dislike screen protectors but I dislike scratches even more.
i've had an old LG Xenon (text phone) i had a cheap case on it which i ended up destroying after repeated drops on concrete, I've even cracked the screen a little on the side with the case and screen protector on, but after all of that i went naked anticipating an upgrade, but i've dropped it off a 2nd story porch straight down onto concrete with screen face down and not even a scratch. I think that the screen itself will survive alot of impacts, it's the rest of the body (as well as the corner of the screen) that can't take the damage.
I'm going no screen protector, but will put a case on it once the one i want comes out. I dont believe it makes enough of a difference to counter the cons of it.
Hey people, just wanted to do my part and contribute.
Xtremeguards https://www.xtremeguard.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=droid+dna has the Droid DNA wet apply screen protector on sale for $1.50 (originally $15) with free shipping. Just enter in code "70OFF1" at checkout. I bought 3 of them. Hope this helps someone. I haven't personally had experience with xtremeguards but I've used xoskins, another wet apply option and it worked pretty well.
