This maybe a stupid question, but what button do I need to press to switch from the stock Samsung keyboard to a different one that i have installed?
I would like to do it on the fly and switching between different keyboards while typing....
The other keyboard I have installed has a dedicated button to allow me to switch back to samsung, not the other way around
Any idea?
Hey mg_k I don't believe you can do that using the stock Samsung keyboard. I had a little fiddle and the only way I found you could switch is to go to Settings > Keyboard and input > select the keyboard you want.

That's ridiculous on Samsung's part
oh well ICS keyboard here i come
Thanks for the info.
first you must install 3rd party keyboard application in your phone..
to change the keyboard is when you type a message, there will be a keyboard icon in notification bar, just tap it to change the default keyboard.

Yeah that works, only if you have the third-party keyboard enabled

That's the answer I am looking for! Not as elegant as a button within the keyboard...but at least that works.
Thanks heaps

Has anybody worked out how to remove the language bar which pops up when texting yet? If I have the sudden urge to switch to Catalan half way through a text I will do it long-hand, that bar takes up too much of the already small screen!
Could you post a photo of what you mean, cost I don't get any language bar come up

I cant post a pic of it at the moment, but let me try to explain it better. When i go to enter text using the hardware keyboard a blue bar appears at the bottom of the screen (taking up approx 1/5 of the screen) with "Eng" on the left and an icon to show the status of the Caps lock on the right, along with a close button. This annoys the hell out of me as often when filling in passwords etc it covers up the "Ok" button.
Only way I found on mini pro is
Settings - Locale & Text
Uncheck the default input tick box
This works well on mini pro but stops you using virtual keyboard

Is a good intermediate solution but someone knows a way to get rid of this bar without losing the virtual keyboard?
It's build in built-in keyboard and I think it could not be removed (not easily without root hacks). The half-solution without root is to use another software keyboard.
Yeah installing third party keyboard software gets rid of the blue language bar.
I'm using SlideIt Keyboard which changes the virtual keyboard to a funky Swype-like keyboard but removes the language bar when using the hardware keyboard.

Can anyone recomend a decent keyboard replacement.
Also, i've asked this before (didn't get much of a reposnse) but is there a way to get spell check with the hardware keyboard?

I use AnySoftKeyboard, which is free and provides a reasonably good keyboard for when I don't want to open the hardware keyboard.

Currently there doesn't appear to be one.
I have ended up installing AnySoft keyboard too. Its ok, but removes the function where you could long-press a key to access the blue alternate option on it. It has removed the language bar though so its good enough for me!
I can't seem to get my g tab to activate any third party keyboards from the market. When I go into settings -> languages and keyboards, then try to click the check box next to the keyboard name, a warning comes up saying it might be a keylogger. I click on activate, and nothing happens, and the keyboard is not listed in the input methods menu. When I go imto options for Better Keyboard and select activate, settings force closes.
I am running tent lite 4.4 and trying to use better keyboard, thumb keyboard, and swiftkey. Any ideas? Thanks!

With TNT and some of the other roms you will have to install the APK for the keyboard to the system folder.
You can find more information at this post:

Thanks! Where on my tablet is that .apk file stored so I can copy and paste it over?
How do I enable the GB Keyboard ? I downloaded one from the market it installs but I cant seem to figure out how to enable. I'm running virtous and have tried on stock and also on perfect storm and nothing. Am I doing something wrong ?
Menu>settings>Language & Keyboard and enable.
Then go to a place where you'd put text in (messaging app for example) and long press and select input method and select gingiekb
I tried that. I was thinking there was something more to it. Once I get to the menu I see GB Keyboard settings and Htc _ime mod settings and touch input settings I can change the settings but nothing actually happens

did you enable it?
That's what I'm asking where in there do i do that ? Sorry for being such a noob but I don't see it.
There should be a check mark to enable the keyboard in the settings.
Then go to a place where you'd put text in (messaging app for example) and long press and select input method and select gingerbread keyboard

Thanks that did it.
exactly as the title says, i cant figure out how to switch to a different keyboard,
there's no option under the language and keyboard settings to actually select one of the other keyboard i have installed, any ideas??
I'm on cm7 also and only have one keyboard selection but I install swype beta and never looked back...do you want swype or the old sammy keyboard? Swype was pretty easy to install but I'm not sure about the old keyboard from froyo rom...idk if there is a work around to get it on cm7? You may be out off luck for that keyboard?

Are you looking to actually just select a new keyboard or install a totally new one
If selecting make sure it checked in language and keyboard settings and long press in any text box, choose input method and select the desired keyboard. thats how I did it

yeah that was it, i was used to having the option to select a keyboard in the settings and didn't know about the long press any text box, thanks
as title really, I wondered if it was possible to have the comma on the first screen as it's a pain toggling screens just to press it. I know it's on the first screen on HTC IME but I prefer the samsung keyboard.
Thanks
Go to your Gingerbread keyboard settings (by the settings button on the keyboard, or by the Android Settings menu -> Language and Keyboard), and there should be an option for 'Voice input'. Disable it (or put it on the symbols keyboard only), and you'll get the comma back.

Oh, are you talking about the Samsung keyboard? Yeah, that's not the Gingerbread keyboard - and IMO, it's garbage.
Go to the market, and download Keyboard from Android 2.3:
