[Q] Samsung Galaxy SII XXKI4... guidance needed. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello xda-Friends.. I am zeekayjee, I just now registered myself on xda-developers forum after reading 100s of discussions from this website for last couple of months.
I recently (some 2 months back) bought Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100XXKI4 here in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. When I was in buying decision, all the sellers tried to convince me that this has Gingerbread 2.3.5 hence it is very likely to get an ICS 4 upgrade VERY VERY SOON. But yet I see nothing, rather if i try to find any updates no one in the world even talks about upgrades in Saudi Arabia. I request any of you who can guide me about following 2 questions:
1- Is there any chance for us (SII owners in Saudia) to get ICS official upgrade? if yes, then any expected dates? if no, then can anyone of you guide me how to do it through rooting and flashing or whatever it takes (by the way I know and have both Kies and Odin3) I will be needing a clear guidance and the required software.
2- Since I only bought it couple of months ago - should I take risk of rooting it ? if yes, how (with all details and software etc. please) and will it kill my warranty?
Please guide me, I will be highly obliged.

1) No. According to the PC version of Checkfus (search for it on here/Google), there hasn't been an ICS release for Saudi Arabia. Re rooting/upgrading, read the Stickies, everything you could possibly need to know can be found in those threads.
2) Should you 'take the risk of rooting it' ? That's up to you. Frankly unless you know why you want to root the phone/have a reason for doing so, I don't see why you should. I've seen plenty of people on here try to root their phones without first completely understanding the process of how & without having a reason why, and it's ended it tears/gnashing of teeth in some cases. Yes, rooting your phone & running non-stock firmware on it voids your warranty.

yes it will come eventually
using odin flash any stock rom it will work no need to root.
be sure you have i9100, check under battery.
i9100 roms will go into i9100
i9100G roms go into i9100G
any mixing will end in brick.
there is an iraq leaked rom available check that outim using it and its very stable.

Hi,
yes you can update to lite'ning rom.
But it's better to flash an original samsung rom first if you are running a branded one.
The roms are available for download (check dev threads)
You can flash back your stock rom by the same way as flashing lite'ning rom.
cheers!

For the same rom, almost same question:
I am on unbranded CSC: XENKE1 (Netherlands); (PDA:XWKE2; Phone: XXKDJ)
Can I flash latest Litening rom, based on KF1, to my phone? Will this give me a UK-CSC? Or will I keep my Dutch localization?
Sorry to thread jack this, but i didn't see the need to create a new one, i bought an unbranded sgs 2 and i have
PDA: XWKE2
PHONE: XXKDJ
CSC: OXXKE2
Seeing as the lite'ning rom is based on XWKE7 should i flash this firmware first? is this thread reliable, do these roms restore warranty ?
I am also interested i hearing about backups for warranty purposes since this is my first flash.
NVM: i just realized those roms are rooted, where can i find stock ones, does anyone have a link?

Just flashed from an unbranded i9100, Dutch edition (XEN) To Litening rom 1.4, without a problem - All apps remain, all localized settings remain; Done in a jiffy!
(btw: it was my first android-flash... w0000t! Coming from iPhone 3g, jailbroken)
(PDA: XWKE2 / PHONE: XXKDJ / CSC: XENKE2 - so almost like yours, only different localization)
Regarding your 'no-root'-question, and warranty:
-When u flash a custom rom, a counter goes up, assuring Samsung can check if u flashed custom stuff to your phone
-It does not matter whether you flash a rooted or unrooted CUSTOM rom: the counter is to check for custom flashes, not for root versus no-root
-It is uncertain but highly likely that Samsung will check the custom-rom-counter to deny warranty
-BUT: in-case-of-emergency you can reset the counter using a special USB-jig (cheap)
-BUT: there might be a 2nd counter (hypothesized, not proven as far as I know), counting the number of counter-resets using the jig (still following me?)
-The bright side: in the Netherlands/Europe the company you buy your phone from is responsible for the warranty, not Samsung; Customer rights are pretty tightly regulated by European law, protecting customers from companies denying warranty... As long as the damage is (reasonably) not due to the flashing, you're still good for warranty over here (in THEORY - try to explain this though to some dumbass uptight salesman)
Thanks for enlightening me, but what if i don't like a feature in the rom and i want to flash back to stock, i can't find any definitive stock roms thread, other than the one i have mentioned in the post, which should be ok, since it's stock asides from the root, i'm gonna try lite'ning, have any favorite roms yourself?
I've never actually had a smartphone, i come from an iPod touch which is close enough , always bothered me that i couldnt do anything with it, i consider myself an explorer
EDIT: Just flashed lite'ning, got a little bit scared cause it took a bit to boot, but everything's fine now
Noob questions
another hijacker! but relevant i think
Ok so iv just moved from a iphone to the samsung s2 and im loving it i have had it for about a week now and a iphone just feels wrong! lol im new to flashing android phones etc but have a lot of experience in jail-breaking and from what i have read and see it seems a lot easier to root and flash android phones! bonus! i have a orange samsung galaxy s2 ;
PDA : I9100KVKE2
PHONE : I9100BVKE2
CSC : I9100ORAKE2
Build info wed 11may
i have read all the root de-branding stuff . custom roms etc and i understand it to a degree but i just want to know where do i start? should i de-brand first using the page on the developers area then root then flash a custom rom? i wanna lose all this orange crap. plus is the orange firmware/rom available to go back to if i ever need to take it back? i would appreciate someones guidance on where to start. i quite fancy the lightening rom.
Fortunately from what I've read so far, lite'ning won't "wipe" your data aka contacts, applications, etc. So all of your applications including orange applications should stay, about going back i can't help you, though i'm interested in hearing from someone who knows more about this.
You should know that just by updating to a version outside of your carrier's allow zone, you automatically lose warranty (custom or not, root or not).
Offtopic: Glad i bought mine unbranded, from i've read around the webz before making my decision, it's well worth the money not having to deal with carriers.

but if you can restore it to the orange original rom stock and use the jig to restore the counters. if there isnt a hidden counter they wouldnt know,
Thanks all for the response. No issues in hijacking, i was going to ask those questions anyways
I have a rom that is specific for India (localization, etc), so when I into the Android Market I can see the price of the apps in the local currency. I havent bought one right now so dont know how the payments work.
Secondly, the warranty - thats a problem. If I flash it and have to take it back to Samsung for any reason I am stuck, especially when you know you might have a hidden counter.
So as much as I would like to go with Litenin ROM, losing warranty for me right now (since the phone is just couple of days old) doesn't make sense. I will rather wait for some more time till all info about GS2 is available before taking the risk.

[Q] How to change firmware from asia to America

long story short; I'm planning on buying a Sam galaxy S II from china.
If I end up with a "asia region firmware", is it possible to change it to another firmware/region risk-free?
Edit:
also is it possible to unlock it in case it was locked?
thanks
It is possible to Unlock.
It is possible to flash any region firmware over any region firmware.
Regards.
Still the same i9100 phone, so you can put any firmware made for i9100.
Hi,
This is not working for me. I tried to flash XWKF3 over the ZCKG4 with Odin but that ended up in a brick phone. Got ZNKG5 downloaded and saved the phone but still on chinese firmware (with no app-market).
Have anyone done a firmware upgrade on a chinese SGS2? I would really like to get EU version with APP-market support, the phone is useless for me otherwise. (and I cant read chinese...)
Either you made a mistake when flashing the KF3 firmware by Odin or you flashed a wrong firmware. Make sure the firmware is full, it will be sized around 300 MB.
Regards.

Id just like to get my 2 cents worth in here so please correct me if im wrong, but ive been reading many failed attempts at this and heres what ive been thinking.
For example the galaxy s2 has this version that we have and also a 4G S2 released in canada.many galaxy models have 3G and 4G versions. Also we see Samsung releasing phones for for china or korea only.Is it possible that the Asian area also works on a different format frequency. For example an S2 firmware wouldnt be compatable with the 4G unit would it??.maybe the same type of thing is happening here cos i cant see anyone having any success with flashing between these two specific regions.Maybe there is a batch of chinese made phones made especially for the aisian region only because of this that makes it non compatable internationally like 4G- 3G regions.
from what i know the 4g s2 from canada is just a naming gimmick by the carrier there. it's still the same s2.
Ok, i read the other threads. apparently in this case failure is more common than success. so I guess I don't buy it in china.

[Q] No available update on kies (even though i should have!)

Hi all, I'm new to posting here but a vet over at samdroid.
I've looked around quite a bit and my problem seems to be unique...annoyingly.
I got my S2 on contract from O2 about 4 days ago, instantly went home and found out I was eligible to upgrade to ICS officially via kies. I have been on kies and connected my phone every day since, and I keep getting told I have the latest version (2.3.5), even though I've seen countless threads/comments of people delighted about the fact they upgraded through kies!
I was thinking of trying odin (i was a pro at updating roms on my spica), but don't know if using an offical update through odin instead of kies would void my warranty etc. NOTE: I don't want to actually root my phone (yet)
I hope that all made sense and any help would be much appreciated
Thanks,
Oli

make sure you got i9100 not any other varient
does other O2 in your area got ICS via KIES
odin is fine and will not void warrenty aslong you dont root and flash back the ROM you have now. you have to find this ROM first if you want to go back.

I got my S II on monday from o2 and I beleive its the I9100p not the I9100, if yours has NFC written on the back its the I9100p and for some reason there is no ICS on kies yet for it

what do you mean by this?
also is there an official rom for my particular S2 that can be updated using odin? or even an unofficial one that wont void warranty?
thanks for all the help guys
This Thread has instructions and official ICS.
Plz note that this is official and will have TouchWiz and does look extremely similar to Gingerbread and without root and custom theme you will not get that ICS feel. You will however get most of the goodies that ICS has to offer.
I got my S2 on contract from O2 about 4 days ago, instantly went home and found out I was eligible to upgrade to ICS officially via kies.
Well that's not exactly true you upgrade if their is an upgrade for your exact phone .
Kies has firmware for GT-i9100KAO2U product code .
I have been on kies and connected my phone every day since, and I keep getting told I have the latest version (2.3.5), even though I've seen countless threads/comments of people delighted about the fact they upgraded through kies!
But not for your phones product code which obviously does not match the released O2 firmware .O2 may well and probably over twelve months had more than one phone for sale unless contract has different codes to PAYG .
Standard older O2 UK firmware for xxx Product codes is on Kies its also on this forum in a legitimate flash via Odin .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
legitimate O2 firmware not stock Samsung tested and works on O2 .
Or you can go to Google find CHECKFUS and try to download from your codes .

you still didnt confirm if you have i9100P which i think you have but i could'nt find the Stock ROM your running now, so you can go back to it later if required.
if you have i9100P this thread has good news for you though the actuall thread is stupid and useless...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24030713
i think what happened to u is you got the model which is i9100P not the usuall i9100, thus all on normal model are on ICS and you still on GB. you can wait for it to come or use the i9100 ROM's but please search if that is actually possible.

i read somewhere that i can use i9100 firmwares on my i9100P, so which of those 2 links would you recommend? also, is there a lot of risk or is it pretty easy and you're just covering yourself?
finally, if i update like this, will i be able to update officially through kies when the update is finally released for me?
no im not covering my self...... i tell you in points....
1: you got I9100P on O2 for which i cant find a firmware for.
2: because you cant go back to your old firmware which is O2 you will get into warrenty problems

ok, i guess i'll wait for the official update then. thanks for your help
here are your options if you still want to continue.
1: you can flash stock firmware for i9100.
2: you can flash custom firmware
3: you can flash O2 branded firmware for i9100.
but in all cases NFC wont work by default.
plus now you cant go back to O2 i9100P firmware as it cannot be found anywhere... atleast by me.

Why don't my s3 get updates?

Hi i've only had one update on my s3 and everyone had like 2-3 one of wich fixed the laucher re-draw... I tried to search for a reason on the forum but I didn't find any.
It's an unbranded i9300
Baseband: i9300ublf2
Build number: IMM76D.I9300UBALF3
thanks for the answers !
It can depend on the country and when your carrier pushes them to their server for update. Or are you rooted with a different Kernel? In that case you will no longer get updates to your phone from the carrier.
If all else fails, meh, don't worry. Just look for an official update release! Use ODIN and flash it to your phone. The country of origin won't matter as long as the rom is for the S3 i9300! I actually find this better.
I'm in canada and only rooted.
My carrier won't send the update since it doesn't carry the phone...
I thought I'd get them directly from Samsung but I guess not,..
If you bought the phone in retail than you'll get the updates directly from Samsung.
However your region is still of importance. Use Odin with http://samfirmware.com and be happy (Flashing Original Rom's does not void your warranty)
Thanks I think i'll have to do that!

Flashing the New XXBLG6 ICS 4.0.4 Firmware / JUST RELEASED

Hey guys. I have the I9300 and my build number is IMM76D.I9300UBALF3 , and I just read that the UK is getting OTA update for XXBLG6 with some nice improvements. This website says that I can simply download their file and use ODIN to install it.
http://www.android.gs/update-samsung-galaxy-s3-i9300-to-official-xxblg6-ics-4-0-4-firmware/
My questions: will this infringe the warranty by any means?
Why does KIES not show that there is an update?
Is it possible that my phone will not be compatible with the update as it probably is not a UK model? ( dunno the difference )
Is there a chance that flashing the update will brick my s3, since I am not actually rooting or anything.
P.S. - I do not have root and I do not plan on getting it yet.
Thanks guys. I appreciate any help!
If u have the correct model number, u can try and it won't brick ur phone normally.
But it is at your own risk.

Eventually for all not immediately .

You would need to ask that web site bit stupid asking another forum for advice on another forums products .
Why does KIES not show that there is an update?
You do not have an update yet .

Yes if its not I9300 International model .
Kies will not offer a UK update to a phone that is not a UK product code .
Is there a chance that flashing the update will brick my s3, since I am not actually rooting or anything.
Yes always possible .
P.S. - I do not have root and I do not plan on getting it yet.
As you do not know what phone you have you would have two choices .
One wait for whatever your phone is and Kies to update it .
Two you could join XDA Developers forum download the stock UK firmware and flash it on the day of release .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969
The risk is very small but it is a small risk that gets much bigger if you do not follow the instructions .
Personally in your shoes i would start reading and understanding first .
PS not heard of these nice improvements ??

I do know what my phone is lol. It's the i9300 , just not sure if my firmware is a UK firmware or a different one. The improvements are on the stability, noise crackling sound, camera features, screen brightness easily accessible.
So since I know that I do have the international version I9300, can I update through ODIN without risk? or? Furthermore, will any build work for the I9300 no matter the location based firmware?

If your phone is not carrier bound you can flash any region as long as it is for your model.
Yes, there is always a risk using Odin. But then again Kies can jack your phone up too.
I put my faith into Odin. YMMV.
