Android optimisation :D - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2012/06/in...ge-to-nearly-double-the-speed-of-android-4-0/
will this be implemented by any developers to the S3?
if so anybody working on it?
Regards
Jack

This article is on the homepage, It's interesting to see what there going to be able to do. A lot of phones get a lot faster when rooted and running a lite rom and optimised kernel so I don't see it as a huge jump but it's interesting nether the less.

So will this thread now be closed? or is it specific enough to the S3 to remain open

I don't know it's directly specific to the GS3 and it's not really a direct question about it either so I don't think so, but you never know.

Maybe it should be moved to general

Will the Galaxy S2 get CM?

I'd really like to get the Galaxy S2, but not without Cyanogen Mod support. What do you think are the chances that the Galaxy S2 will get CM? The Galaxy S still has no stable CM Rom.
Does a bear **** in the woods?

Polar bears don't.
But why doesn't the Galaxy S have a stable CM ROM then?
Stock Media Codecs > CM
if they find a way to keep all the goodies from Samsung then I'm all for it
Frankly, I don't care about the Samsung programmes. If it can be turned off, then ok, but I'd rather have the whole CM experience.
This hardly seems like the right forum for this thread...
So what's the right forum, if not the Galaxy S II Android Development Forum?
Android Development should only contain threads based on actual projects/ROMs/kernels/etc being developed. Discussions about what may or may not be coming to the device should go in general. Best rule of thumb in my book: if you're not actually developing something yourself, a thread shouldn't be started here.
Sorry if I came off like a prick - I just know that this ends up becoming more work for the mods who have to comb through and move threads around.
Also I apologize for theoretically hijacking your thread - Just trying to help keep people in the know
hopefully it will get CM
i really cant stand touchwiz

No problem, I didn't know that.
Maybe a moderator can move the thread into the appropriate forum.
What I really like to know is why the Galaxy S still hasn't got a stable release. Is this also to be expected with the S2?

I agree. Good post, and yes, this should have been in General. Just keep that in mind for the next time We are all excited for this phone, and i personally think that Samsung stock ROM is also quite good. However, to each his own, and I am sure that CM will be out for this phone too
Cheers!

The SGS2 is similar to the SGS in many ways, therefore CM will be difficult to port over.
Especially that there is no Nexus S 2 (a lot of CM7 is from the Nexus S)
Don't expect CM7+ to be running on the SGS2 anytime soon, although it probably eventually will. That's unless anything else happen (a/a genius comes along b/samsung open source more stuff c/Nexus S 2 is released d/sgs2 shares even more with the sgs than I though and current work can be ported over more easily)
This phone is fast enough without CM7. A clean up of the stock ROM, a new launcher and its sweet enough!

It will still miss the CM Tweaks.
A shame that Cyanogen has chosen the G2x as his next phone. The Galaxy S2 is way better than the G2x.

i'm not aware of the history, why exactly was it difficult to bring cyanogen to the original galaxy s, and hence this SGS2 as well? wasnt it like any other phone, the source was released, and cm team built from that?

Ignorance is bliss .
ICS Android 4 has not been released by Samsung .
XDA have a leaked ICS v KP8 Beat test rom not everything works that's why its not released .
You can install or one of the custom roms built around this . But its not for noobs and will of course void your warranty .
jje
I installed it 1 time and i was not happy whit it so i got back to official stuff xD
I found the latest CM9 build from Codeworkx to be stable enough as a daily use ROM. But I prefer TouchWiz to vanilla, so I switched back. It was very smooth though.

Why would you want to go with 4.0 when 5.0 leaked already?! Find it in all its glory here.
buddy do not listen to any of the above posts...here is a link to what you need. it is stable and smooth..trust me its my new daily driver. Click here buddy it is the latest build of ICS Link for latest ICS build
You are all gits. Give him a break, it's a reasonable question due to all the different versions flying round.

Rather than being smartasses, why not give the guy an actual answer? If you think that said 'noobs' will be re educated by repeatedly posting that video, you're delusional. Either that or you genuinely think the same joke is funny after the 3rd time in a row, in which case, you're still delusional.
With this kind of attitude rife, nobody will learn to use the forum correctly or get the answers they want, creating yet more noobs.
To answer OPs question - no, there is no official ICS builds
from samsung yet. You're welcome to try a leaked build or Cyanogenmod 9, which I personally find stable enough for daily use. If you want real stability with every feature functional, however, you're going to have to wait to the official version from Samsung.
Next time, to avoid this immature nonsense, do a quick search and browse the development forum.

Some good points, however a bit of mickey taking should be expected
I am running the CM9 ICS ROM and it is very good even at this early stage. Bits like audio out through the Sammy car dock aren't working (as you'd expect) and the video issues are annoying but not show stoppers IMO so I'm using this as my daily driver for now and will see what the battery life is like.
The only real way is to do a backup and try it out for yourself.

I'll tell you why.
More and more people are coming to these forums, and disregard everything that's posted. They jump in, create a thread, ask the same questions, and expect us to do the work for them.
If this specific user took the 15 minutes to read, he would quickly understand that there are two versions of ICS for the GS2 - leaked builds from Samsung, and CM9. He would also quickly understand that none of these are "full working ROMs".
However, seeing as he couldn't bother himself for 15 minutes to at least try and figure things out on his own, I definitely can't be bothered to write a valid response and to encourage that kind of behavior.
The video basically says "search before you post". He should search before he posts. It isn't funny, it isn't a joke, its actually pretty sad the video had to be created in the first place. But it was created, and it does exist, and so I'll use it whenever its appropriate.
XDA is not anybody's personal tech support - this is not a 1-800 number to dial if you're having problems or questions regarding your device. It is, though, an enormous hub of information that is readily available to anyone who's willing to put in the tiny bit of effort required to properly use it.
Soulicro well said put it in a nutshell .
Let Rolling star answer this same question 400 times in a month dont mind ten times a day .

[Q] Developing for SGH-i717

Hello, I currently own an SGH-i717 and would like to start rom developing for it and would like to know where to start. If I was a complete noob and compared to most of the people here I might be, how would I download 4.0.3 source code, use adb with my phone and etc etc. I find it all very interesting but I have no idea where to start.
I am asking for help with this specific device, then maybe onto porting for other devices but this model has a very sore lack of developers for it and since I own an ATT Note I would like to start the development for it regarding ICS and etc. Also why is there a lack of developers for this model's roms?
Thanks for any and all help regarding this issue and I am excited to get started developing for you guys!
I think you need something called android sdk

and also, what do I search for? I'm very busy so I don't have time to mess with google all day. I need someone who is willing to work with me on educating a new developer, that maybe in turn had someone to learn from before them that appreciates a new (quality)developer.

Tell em what he's won Johnny!!! - A BRAND NEEW ICE CREAM SANDWICH!!!!! - ::And teh crowd goes wild!::
It's good to see someone with a lot of drive to develop, but the biggest hurdle isn't building AOSP from source. You need to get a working kernel that is compatible with ICS and all the Notes hardware. You can't google search how to do that. In reality it's almost impossible to do if you don't have extensive experience with that sort of thing.
We need the source code from Samsung for the Note and as far as I know, there is no source code out yet for the Note (for any version of Android). The roms you are seeing right now (two that Im aware of) are basically rigged versions of the stock rom where things have been removed (bloatware) and a few things have been added that conveniently worked out of the box without messing with code.
The real work will come when we have some source code to work with.
Ok, what's next?

Okay well that's a start... does anyone know where I can find a stock version of ICS to study it's code and experiment? I found source codes for SGH-i717 here
opensource(dot)samsung(dot)com
(I need more posts to make that a link, lol)
I searched for i717 and it came up with four source results on samsung's opensource search bar but I don't know what the four results are for and what the difference between them all are(unless it means it is for att or tmobile or etc, etc.), if you can tell me any info on these then I would be greatly appreciative.
Yeah, I have no clue how to do most things with coding for android but I do understand how to flash correctly, root and all that jazz. I just lack the programming skills and work flow it takes to make all this. I am downloading java for dummies and learning how to use XML files, but I am wondering if there is something else I should study too?
It sucks that I came here starting from scratch basically but I have learned a lot from here in a short amount of time, I appreciate all of the developers who have made the roms I love along the way, I am just growing impatient with the far and few between updates for your devices and I want to see updates for our devices come faster and the only way to do that is to do something about it. So I am very grateful for any help I get regarding this.
Where can I start with the kernel search? Is that what everyone is waiting on to start developing ICS for this phone? Does anyone know if one exists?
Another Question
What's the difference between a kernel and a rom? Basically.. what the heck is it in lamen's terms?

[Q] Project Butter on S3 - time to do something!!

Hi there!
I opened up this thread to discuss the pros and contras of making up some bad press for Samsung on the s3 and, this is very important, to get clear about what they clearly did wrong with this community.
This isn't to be about what you may wish but what would really make sense and isn't their.
So let me go into detail about my knowledge that forced me to open this thread (correct me if I'm wrong, please!!)
- there should have be a very huge step in performance and ui response from ICS to JB on the s3 like happed on nexus
- also their are quiet a few things missing to bring project butter online on CM10:
codeworkx said:
What do we need?
We need sources for (sorted by priority):
- omx plugins (ICS compatible codecs for use with MFC5.X)
- camera module (camera.exynos4.so)
- audio modules (audio.primary.exynos4.so, audio_policy.exynos4.so)
- RIL header files (.h files)
- GPS header files (.h files)
- hwcomposer or at least the header files (hwcomposer.exynos4.so)
- sensor module (sensors.exynos4.so)
- gralloc and ump (gralloc.exynos4.so, libUMP.so)
If it's not possible to release some sources because of NDA's, then at least header files, interface documentation or instructions how to use Samsung proprietary files (binarys) with AOSP.
Now someone has to start a petition and advertise it. I'll not do because this will steal more of my non existing freetime.

my thoughts on this (fell free to comment that): My theory is, that Samsung was lazy to implement PB into their ROMs and because of this there is simply some lag of documentation because it is simply missing. So IF WE could show that there is no improvement on the official roms which should have come with PB, it could force Samsung to finally bring PB online. From that point it would be no big thing for Samsung to give us the missing documentation and sources.
As I wrote above to do this we need some hard facts. And this facts must be as simple as possible that also NONDEVs would understand it.
I heard some rumors about an video which show exactly that. That would be nice!!
Beside that every legit evidence is appreciated!!
AFTER ALL:
Some person, I could to that (did that before with origin), would set up a facebook-site which shows this whole evidence. After that all the only thing we would have to do is to get as much likes as possible and confront Samsung with that.
What do you think??
PS: As you may have noticed I'm not an english native ... so please if we do this at least get the language right!
Why not contribute to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1925709
Instead of opening a new one for the exact same thing.
I searched for project butter! for me it wasn't clear, still not is, that your thread is about the same reason! Also, as you may already have noticed, there are some big differences with this two threads...
I'm not about having my own thread but I also wanna make sure that my goal here is clear. A site to like will give the community a big number! This is way more impressive as to write down support tickets as suggested in the other thread.
There is only one 'official' test JB release so if you are not from Poland I don't think you can talk about JB on the s3 with Samsung. Also there is already ongoing initiative to get Exynos documentation and this can put any progress in risk as we are starting to spam for every thing that bothers us.
It's all in your head basically.
ICS to JB stock is not the same as ICS+Touchwiz to JB+touchwiz. For example, If Samsung didn't make any changes to the Touhwiz UX, then it could easily be touchwiz slowing JB down and not Samsung not incorporating it.
In fact, since project butter is in the JB framework, it would actually cost more money and take more time for their software engineers to disable it or create an ICS/JB hybrid. Like what would they do exactly? lock at 50fps instead of 60fps? Double buffer instead of triple buffer? Why would they possibly do that? If they did that then they might as well not use JB at all.
So moral of the story. YOU BE TRIPPING and should just get a Nexus device.
It honestly sounds like people do not like how many animations Touchwiz has and want to blame something so they blame Samsung for not incorporating project butter when there is no reason why they wouldn't.
?? OP - there is no official JB release for you to moan about just yet.

Typical on xda forums, satirical and cynical answers when you could give normal ones. I am not surprised that people from another forums do not like to come to this one.
Regarding the op post, I have not yet installed the official jelly bean rom but I've been reading people saying that it really seems like there is no improving reading smoothness when comparing ics and jellybean and they do blame touchwiz. If that's true I have to agree with the op even though I do not believe samsung will care about our demands.
We already have a thread discussing getting samsung to release the documentation
We do not need another one. Thread closed

Android L

Hey folks,
Do you know if there are any developers working on porting Android L Developers Preview to our G2?
It's just that the Nexus 5 and the LG G2 are very similar on hardware, it seems like it's not that complicated.
Thanks.
Please don't move the thread to Q&A, it's less a question and more a discussion.
you already have a thread(s) with this question and it's been answered just a few days ago...

Well, depends on how difficult it is to port it to the G2. If it's difficult and could take a lot of time I agree with you, start developing a ROM would be a waste of time.
But if it's an easy work (as I said earlier, the Nexus 5 and the G2 are similar) then making a ROM that matches the exact one running on the Nexus without any more features, would be very nice and something to play with until the full version comes out. And my guess is that the full L will be close (in the way of how it works) to the preview, so it might help developing later.
I think will be develop L port for our device after will be published official L sources by google

I agree with you. It would be fun to play with. I don't see why it's such a pain to do seeing that the devices are so close in specs.
Giga they are close in specs with chipset and screen but they have lots of differences regarding hardware. Its also hard to port an android version what your phone doesn't have yet and also taking the risk to do it the biggest problems are the kerne i guess. It would be theoritically possible to just flash the android l from the nexus 5 on the g2 and it might boot but its highly risky and things like wifi etc probably don't work and it could cause screen problems like the stripes issue since we don't know yet what it causes to get like that.
