Modified build.prop and phone not start - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
With a program (RAM manager) I modified VM heap size to 128M, but now the phone does'nt start. I think there is some problem with the build.prop. CWM recovery working and download mode as well. CWM recovery can not see my external SD card.
If it is possible I don't want to reset the phone, because I need data from internal partition. How can I copy anything to internal partition? Is there a way to upload a correct build.prop via odin?
Thank you!!

I don't have my S3 on me but someone could upload theirs for you!
Also don't try think but I think if you refalsh the same ROM without clearing data and factory reset nothing would be wiped clean. But not sure. I'm probably worng.
Good luck

Just reflash your ROM without wiping. That'll overwrite the modified build.prop file.

amazing! I'm having similar issues myself! I modified build.prop and overwrote it and now the phone will boot to the 'Samsung Galaxy S III' screen and stop.
Does anyone have the OEM ROM? Or at least a nandroid backup of it? I have CWM and recovery working as well just like the OP and it sounds like getting that ROM or nandroid would solve both our problems (sorry for the hijack OP)

apologies to the OP and the forum, I have the sprint L710 and the i9300 rom won't help ...

[Q] Updated to Bionix and will not boot

Hello,
My camera was not working so I backup my Bionix rom, my apps with titanium, etc. I did a new install of Bionix and then updated the OverStock v1.3 kernel using recovery screen. My phone will not boot up. I think I should have updated the kernel through an app that does that, so I messed up.
I am unable to go into recovery. I am able to get to download mode. I am downloading the tool box for vibrant along with the bionix rom. I have never used the vibrant tool box, but my questions:
1. Can use vibrant tool box under download mode and install a new copy of bionix without loosing info of the internal memory card?
2. If I use Oding3_V1.0 and install Eugene_2e_jk2 (like I originally did a long time ago), would I loose the info in the internal memory card?
3. Is there another, easier way to get bionix install and not loose my internal memory card?
I would appreciate any help. I am downloading both programs and it is tacking a while, so any help would help a lot while I wait.
whatever you do it shouldnt wipe your internal sdcard....but i do suggest to just odin back to stock
thanks button if i helped

Thanks a lot! That is a good to know. I was worried I would loose all the info in the internal card.
Do you know if there is a newer version of the eugene with root? Or what would you recommend as the latest stock with root for odin?
Thanks again!
this one has never failed and is the easiest to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047087
I see it says ** Re-partition is checked now in ODIN - THIS IS APPROPRIATE!! **
I just want to make sure that if check this, my insternal sdcard, that is part of the phone memory, wont be formatted, correct?
Sorry for the questions, but I don't want it to go wrong!
yes it wont be formatted ...the only thing it format is the system file

[Q] Recovery manager for Samsung Mini GT-S5570

Hi there,
Thanks to your work I've managed to install ROM 2.3.5 on my brand new Mini GT-S5570
I wanted to do a backup using recovery manager.
As the ROM manage application isn't working for this phone, i went for the ODIN process
I can now start recovery manager
However, the backup doesn't entirely work due to: cannot mount /system!
It saves boot and something else, but system stuck.
It might be due to the format of partition used. That's where I stuck.
Anyone managed to get CWR installed, using 2.3.5 ROM and been able to do a full backup?
Thanks a lot for your help
PS: Hope it is the right place put this thread as there's no dedicated thread for this device, and not sure it can be put into DEV
First question from where did you get 2.3.5?? it is yet not released on samfirmware

How to make a totally clean install?

After trying different roms and testing different things i realized that a full wipe does not clear everything of your current setup.
If you use root explorer for example and just take a look at your folders and files you will see that there are many files left from older roms.
What is the fastest way to make a totally clean installation with a custom rom (cm9 nightly or rr for example)?
I found an older tutorial here but i think it might be outdated.
Is there some kind of script that i can flash before installing the new rom (that cleans everything but efs files and recovery files for example?).
Or do i have to get a sammy stock rom with 3 parts and pit file and re-partition with odin and flash pack to a custom rom right after ?
in CWM
under mounts/storage
format system,cache,data
then flash rom
Really clean install? Flash rom through Odin. Everything will be wiped.

No as you said it just clears data and cache, that is wiped with full wipe /factory reset anyways. And system is also just the system folder.
The other folders in your root will not be touched by this and will still remain on the phone. But i cant really tell if they are used or not anymore. I can only tell by the content and the creation date that of the folders and files, that a lot of these have to be from older setups.

What kind of firmware do i need then? I think if i flash without the re-partion tick in odin options the old files would also stay there. and i need a firmware with 3 parts to flash because you need a pit file to do that.
Ofc i would like to have exactly the same partition sizes as before on my phone if i have to repartition.
So i guess i need somebody who has some knowledge with odin and 3 part firmwares.
download the stock rom from samfirmware.com(after signup)!
flash the "md5" file using odin
after fresh install of stock rom, goto settings>storage>format usb storage and format sd card if u have one!
then u can do a factory reset again and you have a clean wiped phone!

Are you sure that a 1 part firmware from sammobile will wipe all the internal data and not just update and overwrite the new ones? (im not talking about the sd card, im talking about the system data that you can just see with a root explorer for example).
If you're performing a wipe data/factory reset alongside wiping the cache and Dalvik cache, you are performing a clean install. The residual files you're seeing are stored on the internal storage (the /sdcard partition), if you wish to clear them, go into recovery, mounts and storage, and format the /sdcard partition. Viola!
Also, wrong section. All questions should be posted in Q&A. Flagged.
screamworks
I attached some screenshots now about the files that i mean.
Im not talking about the content of the internal or external sd card.
Look at the misc, lib ,res or proc and preload folders.
Also the script files.
Some files might be related to the kernel settings of course.
Im trying to go on a stock rom now and call "*2767*3855# " for a hardreset and see if that works
EDIT:
Nope the hard reset didnt work, all the files are still there.
Where do i get a ics rom with 3 parts and a pit file that i can temporary install to clean my root folder? or is there a tutorial here somewhere could follow?
External SD not visible after new ROM installation
I rooted my galaxy s2 just a day before and faced an issue. After rooting I installed jelly bean 2.6 ROM(Resurrection and remix) and found my GPRS not working and then I did a factory reset, but unfortunately phone got dead and then I removed the battery and re booted after some time. This only restored 98 applications out of 113 in this new ROM. However, I re flashed the ROM again and all the applications got back to normal, but my SD card was not to be seen after this second flash, before factory reset my external SD card was readable(with the new ROM)

the external SD it's mounted on /emmc so, there are your files. You can access to this folder with any file explorer (even the stock one). Just open the file manager, select the "mnt" option on the top, the one between the Home icon and SD icon, inside you can find the emmc folder.
Well i guess i could compare my files with the files of somebody else with rr and delete some of them manually

Since you are currently running CyanogenMod, then follow these instructions:

-Boot your phone to CWM recovery
-Wipe data/factory reset
-boot your phone to download mode
2. On your Pc

CWM backup on CM10 fails!

Hi, I'm having this issue where the CWM nand backup of the whole system fails. I upgraded to the latest CM10 version, and still it crashes.
It goes as:
CWM-Based Recovery v6.0.1.2
SD Card space free: 26140MB
Backing up boot image...
Backing up recovery image...
Backing up system...
Freeing space... [stays rather long here]
Backing up data...
Error while making a backup image of /data!
Any help will be welcome!
Try changing the path to internal SD , if performs backup the problem is SD ext.
it might be searching for the blobs, and if previous backups were on internal instead of external then it may be reporting an error
Actually I wiped on purpose both the blobs and the previous backups, as I wanted to start from scratch. Both folders, backup and blobs are empty...
OK, I just saw actually it´s doing a bit of the backup, and then at some point it crashes, halfway there. Couldn´t get the name, it moves too fast!
EDIT: This attempt I was doing it in the internal card, but it also crashed.
Is there a way to see the backup log?
have you tried wiping cwm data, or might be that it is searching for blobs that no longer exist-hence the problem?

are you talking about CWM Manager or the Recovery..if it is recovery..ROMs do not and cannot change the recovery...
So it does not depend on the ROM which you are using..try using the CWM recovery 5.5 which is non touch...flash it via Odin...Read the OP and try

I was talking about the recovery. I think the .zip file that includes the ROM can also include a new recovery, as my recovery has been changing several times, whenever I updated the ROM. Moving from Wanamlite to CM10 made me change the CWM from one with touch support to the current one (v6.0.1.2) , with no touch support at all.
Huh? I just noticed I posted this in the wrong forum? It says Galaxy S3 Q&A, I thought I was posting for SGS2. Sorry for this...Could some admin move this post? Thank you!

[Q] CWM Recovery on Galaxy Player 4.2 {Related to No WiFi}?

Hello there guys so I'm here because I did a very silly mistake related to the CWM for the Galaxy Player 4.2 (Or at least that's what I think I did ).
Related to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39344227
Anyway I'm not familiar with CWM since the Galaxy Player 4.2 is my first Android device ( And is not like the device has been easy on us right ), my device is rooted and the problem is that I already got the Kernel on my device and as expected I'm without WiFi. How can I configure the CWM Recovery without WiFi, if not, how can I get WiFi back?.
Sorry for bothering with dummy questions/mistakes and thanks in advance .

Can I flash the fix without CWM, for example with Odin?. I'm having a really hard time here, since I was dumb enough to install the Kernel without configuring the CWM before or at least making sure I could do it without the WiFi. Now the problem is when I want to flash with Rom Manager it says I need the recovery since I'm not a premium but again in order to get the recovery I need WiFi internet :/.

Wow it's the first time I see somebody having more problems with CWM than odin (no offense). Actually all you need to do is to put the patch into your device and then boot into CWM. Once into CWM, go into install zip from sdcard, then chose zip from sdcard and chose your patch zip. Once you choose it, you will see a bunch of no and one yes, check yes and it will patch it. Once it's done, reboot your device.
Hope it helps.
I'd like to know if flashing the kernel with CWM will make loose data, apps and preferences ? Thanks.

You're right, it works fine ! Now I have a question : I tried a backup in CWM, system and data have been backed up, but neither applications nor cache.
I got the following error messages :
Code:

Backing up cache...
No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext.
Any idea ?

/sdcard/.android_secure is the directory of the download of big apps (for example apps like nova or subway surfers I think) Cache has been backed up. Don't worry, all your things has been backed up.

Man, I feel so stupid right now . I managed to run the CWM boot now when I try to install the zip the update. Says:
"E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed

Maybe I should tell you everything I did just in case.
I had the device already rooted.
Flashed the kernel
Installed the CWM v5.0.2.7
Transfered the Fix zip to sdcard
then I did everything you said and also tried to disable verification and still failed.
Sorry to be bothering U_U.

So I suppose that I've no such apps, as I don't have any .android_secure directory in /
Also, cwm backup seems to ignore backup of boot.image and recovery image. There is not even an error or warning message.
