I just thought id ask this question to see if anyone else has noticed.
I have overclocked my SGSII to 1.5 and i have noticed when my phone has heavy usage i.e. browsing and running large apps like titanium backup etc the back of my phone seems to be gettn warm, i cant really notice it becauss i have a protective case on but if i put the back of my hand on the camera its really warm.
I have left the phone to idle for a while and checked, its not warm but gets warm when i start using it for a few mins for browsing, downloading and like i say running heavy apps.
I would really like to know if anyone else is getting this or is it just me lol.
P.s.
I have also changed the overclock via setcpu back to 1.2 and the phone doesnt seem to get warm.
My phone is also running lite'ning 1.5 rom.

No your phone is not special, in general overclocking = runs hotter, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overclocking#Disadvantages

I know overclockin can cause more heat, i use to build and overclock pc's
Seen as it only gets warm when i am using it heavly supose it will be safe.

btw if u search on the SG2 forum
people are having heating issues
not that it causes problems
only that they feel heat
there is not cause for concern
Oh right, i did do a search but couldnt find anything, think i need to re-learne my searching skills lol.
Sorry for posting this issue again :/

Didn't someone here fry a phone with OC? Nobnut I think.. Anyway I don't see the point, considering how fast the phone is already ..

Hi all,
My phone heats up tremendously when charging or playing games, I've had a good look through xda and only found a few other ppl with similar issues, but there was no solution or a workaround to be found. So I'm not sure whether it's a fault with my phone and i should take it back ?
What do ppl think!?!
Thanks in advance

I don't believe the device has any overheating issues, but the people are thinking that it's overheating, that's why there are many threads but no answers, because there is no answer practically. Besides, only saying overheating doesn't mean anything unless you mention the temperature.
Also, if you play games or charging the phone, it will be hot, it is normal.
Regards.
It's normal. Bear in mind that you are using a very slim dual core phone. So it'll become hot if you are playing games or using CPU centric apps.
1: Load Dungeon Defenders
2: Play for half an hour on low brightness, and with it scaled down a bit to help
3: Cant touch screen, burny kinda pain
..... Makes me cry

As a workaround you can try underclocking your phone.
Hi, I had this issue when I bought the phone. I took it to the service centre and the guy there said that there was some moisture in the phone (I dont know whether it was real or not) and that he had cleaned the phone. The problem was not solved until I started using custom roms and kernels. You can also try doing the same.

there are app on the market that will give you info about the phone and temp.
but it is still a fast phone in a small case
Now this the billions't thread on heating .......
Take time, search and find the answers already given ......
The heat is NORMAL when sgs 2 is used at it's limit (gaming , hd video watching, navigation etc. )
E.g. an Intel i7 dual core notebook cpu has a max. design temp of 105 deg C !!!!!!!
So what ? If You can't accept the reality of physics (high cap cpu = high temp produced) sell Your phone ......
I wonder if some posters here attended basic school physics lessons at all .....

@troed- Ahh, don't go harsh on them mate. They will realize they are wrong, but that will take time sadly.
@ troed
Don't be a smart arse no one likes one.
I was merely putting out my issue to see whether others are experiencing the same and if they've something about it.
I know all about dual core etc etc
I was shocked to find the temperature reach 50c/122f (should've mentioned in 1st post) when charging and around 46c gaming etc
Thanks to all with constructive comments.

Thats fine temp mate.
Good luck.

One tip I'd recommend is to avoid using the phone if it's charging. Samsung themselves say this.
It is a very powerful phone, in a very thin case, you will feel the heat more than in the brick you had before
46°c is a good temp.
Feels warm to the touch, ofcourse.
But nothing to worry about. As soon as it goes over 55-60°c i would start worrying.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Meaning: continuously superhot! (2hrs+ @ 60+°C)

I guess I was hoping that it maybe a rogue app causing the problem or maybe changing to a different kernal may reduce the amount of heat.
Sounds like I'll just have learn live it! At least it keep my hands warm in the winter. Lol
Cheers

I could use my SGS2 for BBQ in the summer time.
@troed
Another arrogant person making smartass comments. XDA is certainly going down hill. I didn't realise that a background in physics was a requirement to own a phone.
If you have nothing useful to say...don't say anything. It just highlights the type of individual that you are, which isn't very flattering.

My SGSII did that too
Yes, the problem is true,, when I first bought my phone a month ago, I tried playing Asphalt 6, and my phone got soo hot I couldn't hold it anymore,, it exceeded 50 deg.C
But then I updated my phone, and the problem was gone.. don't get my wrong it still heats a bit,, but never more than 40 deg.C (you can still use your phone at that temp.).. and some people said the problem vanishes completely when upgrading to Gingerbread 2.3.4
Hope that helped

Agree. Upgrading to 2.3.4 really helps to reduce a little bit of temp.
more heat causes faster battery drain

Oh my god! Overclocking is not for starters! Be sure to read a lot before doing that. Go to wiki and search here on the forum. I can only say that you are doing in that in a irresponsible way, you could have bricked your phone.. The restart were normal overclocking brings instabillity. Just dont overclock if you like your phone.

I know that too but its really risky specialy when you overclock that much...
Try to search for a quicker rom or kernel instead of overclockin.

Of course you can overclock but be very carefull not setting cpu speed too high and never set the speed at boot before you're absolutely sure that is stable else your phone will keep restarting like it did. Also overclocking depends on kernel too, so different kernels different stable max speed.I use rage 2.4 on my st15i and i went as far as 1.6 only to run some benchmarks.1.8 or more is very risky even for benchmarks the heat could destroy your phone. These speeds are not for everyday use beside the risk of destroying it the battery consumption would be massive.I'd say 1.2 for everyday use is perfectly normal cause it's already a very fast phone

Hey everyone,
I maybe have to buy a new phone, because my Nexus S died, and I didn't get a reaction from Samsung yet. I'm about sure that my next phone will be a Xperia S, but I'm not sure about battery life, so please post your battery life screenshots here!
Please also give information about your rom, kernel, etc..

Battery life is great with the latest stock update, I'm a heavy user and I manage to make it for a day or so. Go for it.

battery is good even with data, IF you dont use the screen.
On screen time with stock is 5-7 hours. And if you play game continuously, about 4 hours
~5 hours + on screen and about 1.5 days of battery if you only use it for text and call. I'd tap that

Folks... I came here for the same issue.... I love this phone, I had an HTC Desire Z before, I am a heavy user and flasher...
But I hardly get 6-7 hours from my Xperia S. Today, I was at work, I kept checking FB, RSS, twitter every 2-3 hours for 10-15 minutes. Other times it is on standby, screen off and not used.
I have Viber running, weather widget, background syncing, emails checked every hour or two but no FB autosync and **** like that.
After 5-7 hours I am down at 20+% and hardly used it. Is this like that??????
Right after unboxing, I did the OTA ICS update. Should I do a clean FlashTool flash instead?
Help folx.....

I agree. Sony gave my carrier (Vodafone Au) an outdated version of the ICS update. Vodafone then took forever to approve it. My ICS update has the wakelock issue and battery life has noticeably diminished. The launcher crashes now and then. It's still laggy to move from home screens. I mean how hard is it to make a decent ICS update given how late it was rolled out. And I find it's funny that in the ICS update thread A LOT OF users claimed that the early versions of ICS were buggy, and yet now when others complain about them they're branded trolls. Grow up for f's sake. If you dont have anything nice to say or help people just dont say it and keep being a fan boy.

first u should prevent bumping posts ma8, u want to add some thing then just edit ur OP,do not add a post again for that alltogether
for ur issue, change ur kernel and see
Change kernel or try lowering max Cpu frequency in Extweaks or Rom control in Settings.
