I just thought id ask this question to see if anyone else has noticed.
I have overclocked my SGSII to 1.5 and i have noticed when my phone has heavy usage i.e. browsing and running large apps like titanium backup etc the back of my phone seems to be gettn warm, i cant really notice it becauss i have a protective case on but if i put the back of my hand on the camera its really warm.
I have left the phone to idle for a while and checked, its not warm but gets warm when i start using it for a few mins for browsing, downloading and like i say running heavy apps.
I would really like to know if anyone else is getting this or is it just me lol.
P.s.
I have also changed the overclock via setcpu back to 1.2 and the phone doesnt seem to get warm.
My phone is also running lite'ning 1.5 rom.

No your phone is not special, in general overclocking = runs hotter, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overclocking#Disadvantages

btw if u search on the SG2 forum
people are having heating issues
not that it causes problems
only that they feel heat
there is not cause for concern

Does anyone else have this app? How is yours working out for you? I just installed it on my vibrant that I just installed oclf on, and even though there was an error and it could not install AOSP, it says I am supposed to be getting x1.46 battery. Also, does anyone know what AOSP is?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well its down to x1.15, but is still saving me battery. Unplugged at 930am, its now 6pm and I'm at 63. I was using the phone lightly you could say.

Don't have JD installed anymore, but thought id mention that the dev section has some great stuff. Eugenes Hybrid_r2 ROM has me at 11 hours @ 52% left. Nothing else was added, not even JACs under volted kernel. You should cruise those threads.
AOSP = android open source project
I tried using Juice Defender multiple times.... seems to slow down the phone drastically.
I found a neat replacement for it when I was using my G1, supposed to do the same thing. It's called BatteryFu. I think it does its job.
I use juice defender and works great for me. I use my phone all day easily from 5am to 9pm moderate use and still have 29% left.
juice defender was always having errors for me starting and stopping data, basically would stop working within 24hours of each set up and auto configuration. the free version really does suck so much with its limits and bugs i just dont seeing it being more useful the being smart and turning off 3g networks when you dont need data.
if the full version isnt as buggy then id prob recommend it.... just cant do it with the free though, piece of crap...

which of jacs kernels are undervolted???? the non over clocked SCv ones? i read through MOST that thread and didnt recall reading that any were lowvolted... mind linking a post if you have an idea??? otherwise ill thread search and skim.....
I use JD on my Vibrant and on my wife's 3GSlide and it works great for us. It can be a little annoying at times when it kills WiFi when you are trying to do something so I set application exceptions to solve that.

I could be wrong but in the earlier stages JAC listed it "for ppl who feel 1ghz is fast enough" I thought that was one of the differences between the 2... Both optimized, one OC'd the other UV'd. Id say pull a quick search of the thread with "under volted" and it may come up. Would make a little sense in having SCs under volted to be truly "optimized".
JD slowed my phone down pretty badly. Now I use DC Switch to manually shut off my data when I'm not using it. It's not ideal but it's better than lag city.
After having it a couple days I noticed it actually takes more off my battery then it was saving. Juice plotter is awesome tho! Too bad it sabotaged his other app. When I would disable juice defender juice plotter expected time till death would go way up, and I noticed the actual line graph was better than the days before using juice defender. I set up all my apps to sync at a slower rate and for some I even disabled syncing, like fb which I do manually if I get new buddies or something.

Hi all,
My phone heats up tremendously when charging or playing games, I've had a good look through xda and only found a few other ppl with similar issues, but there was no solution or a workaround to be found. So I'm not sure whether it's a fault with my phone and i should take it back ?
What do ppl think!?!
Thanks in advance
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I don't believe the device has any overheating issues, but the people are thinking that it's overheating, that's why there are many threads but no answers, because there is no answer practically. Besides, only saying overheating doesn't mean anything unless you mention the temperature.
Also, if you play games or charging the phone, it will be hot, it is normal.
Regards.
It's normal. Bear in mind that you are using a very slim dual core phone. So it'll become hot if you are playing games or using CPU centric apps.
1: Load Dungeon Defenders
2: Play for half an hour on low brightness, and with it scaled down a bit to help
3: Cant touch screen, burny kinda pain
..... Makes me cry

As a workaround you can try underclocking your phone.
Hi, I had this issue when I bought the phone. I took it to the service centre and the guy there said that there was some moisture in the phone (I dont know whether it was real or not) and that he had cleaned the phone. The problem was not solved until I started using custom roms and kernels. You can also try doing the same.

there are app on the market that will give you info about the phone and temp.
but it is still a fast phone in a small case
Now this the billions't thread on heating .......
Take time, search and find the answers already given ......
The heat is NORMAL when sgs 2 is used at it's limit (gaming , hd video watching, navigation etc. )
E.g. an Intel i7 dual core notebook cpu has a max. design temp of 105 deg C !!!!!!!
So what ? If You can't accept the reality of physics (high cap cpu = high temp produced) sell Your phone ......
I wonder if some posters here attended basic school physics lessons at all .....

Don't be a smart arse no one likes one.
I was merely putting out my issue to see whether others are experiencing the same and if they've something about it.
I know all about dual core etc etc
I was shocked to find the temperature reach 50c/122f (should've mentioned in 1st post) when charging and around 46c gaming etc
Thanks to all with constructive comments.

One tip I'd recommend is to avoid using the phone if it's charging. Samsung themselves say this.
It is a very powerful phone, in a very thin case, you will feel the heat more than in the brick you had before
46°c is a good temp.
Feels warm to the touch, ofcourse.
But nothing to worry about. As soon as it goes over 55-60°c i would start worrying.

I guess I was hoping that it maybe a rogue app causing the problem or maybe changing to a different kernal may reduce the amount of heat.
Sounds like I'll just have learn live it! At least it keep my hands warm in the winter. Lol

@troed
Another arrogant person making smartass comments. XDA is certainly going down hill. I didn't realise that a background in physics was a requirement to own a phone.
If you have nothing useful to say...don't say anything. It just highlights the type of individual that you are, which isn't very flattering.

My SGSII did that too
Yes, the problem is true,, when I first bought my phone a month ago, I tried playing Asphalt 6, and my phone got soo hot I couldn't hold it anymore,, it exceeded 50 deg.C
But then I updated my phone, and the problem was gone.. don't get my wrong it still heats a bit,, but never more than 40 deg.C (you can still use your phone at that temp.).. and some people said the problem vanishes completely when upgrading to Gingerbread 2.3.4
Hope that helped

Agree. Upgrading to 2.3.4 really helps to reduce a little bit of temp.
more heat causes faster battery drain
My first time posting here, so please be gentle.
I've had my SGS2 for around 6 months now, its an unlocked ASIA (as I live in BKK). I noticed on the original stock firmware that the phone was running hot, as in the back panel around the camera would heat up to the point I could feel it in my pocket. This would normally happen if I was using a game like angry birds, or a psx emulator. But sometimes it would happen in the browser under normal conditions. I just thought this may be a issue with dual core phones, so I took this as a 'feature' and accepted it.
But now lots of people I work with have this phone, and it came up in conversation about heat. Everyone stated they do not have this issue, that the phone remains cool all the time.
I have moved between many different ROMs, and have finally stuck with Westcrips ICS ROM. Then a strange thing happened, the heat issue goes away with version 8.4. Phone is cool all the time, even playing my PSX emulator in software mode. Battery also increased from 12 hours to 16-18 hours.
But now I just moved up to 9.3, and its back again, the front screen is very hot to touch when using things like the MX video player, or surfin the web. And if I launch a game ... well, forget about it. The battery drain is immense to, be lucky if I pull an hour of use like that.
Anyone else suffer from this? Hardware fault? I can't take it back because my flash counter is probably in the 20's now, and I can't find a reset JIG in Bangkok.
Cheers.
FYI, I always do a clean wipe, dalvik / cache / permissions.
same issued here, phone bought from Thailand also. Phone getting hot when browser, downloading and playing some games( not all). And its really hot
Changing Rom and kernel sometimes solved it for awhile but eventually will come back.
Looking for solution also
Thanks
P/s: right now im using LA4 stock Rom and CF root LA4 kernel and still get hot

Thanks for getting back to me.
The one I know that fixes it is Resurrection 8.4. Its a dam good rom, and given me the best battery life (once I got 20 hours with normal use). But there is an issue with touch screen sensitivity that makes it annoying.
Maybe its something to do with the Kernel on the Asian models?
If I find a fix I'll pm you.
Hmmm mine only gets uncomfortably hot when playing some 3d games. Didn't experience the same level of heat when just browsing though... It just gets a little warm but far from gaming temps.
What i did was undervolt and underclock when playing. It did reduce the heat and extend the battery though i admit it's not the best solution / workaround.

I use Tegrak Overclock so I can mess with clocks and voltages with the stock kernel. See below for my settings... 100% stable on my phone.

Right now my phone is warm all the time, just lost 20% battery as well in 1 hour.

Well it looks like the ICS kernel is not supported right now under Tegrak. It is bleeding edge.
I tried setCPU to under clock but ended up with a lot of slow down and some full system freezes.
Guess its back to 8.4 until I find a more definitive answer.

Since you're using Westcrip's Resurrection Remix, you can get rid of the triangle by using Chainfire's TriangleAway app - I'm using Resurrection too and it got rid of the flash counter and the triangle.
TriangleAway should work on all ICS roms though.
Strange, installed triangle away yesterday evening. Work like a charm, so I guess if I need to return I can now.

Dear Family,
i have a problem with my galaxy SII since i got the phone tell now
i've got this handheld 6 month back and its now rooted having ICS AOKP RR 2.2 with CM kernel remix
and the device is getting overheated in the part of the camera , the overheat is happening when ever am browsing the net on WIFI or even 3G
i searched the internet regarding the same and i got that the issue is in the base-band so i flashed KH3 and nothing was changed
i flashed my device with amout 300 ROM (official/unofficial) and nothing change in this issue
also i found that my device sometimes is stucked on 1200 MHz for about 5 MINS without a valid reason in the foreground
appreciate your cooperation

Mine heats up too, if you think about how much stuff is crammed into such a thin, light phone it's no wonder it gets hot
Don't worry about it

You have to worry when battery temp reaches more then 50 degree C, turn of phone for 2 mins then
Their are apps on market to measure it

300 ROM??? Hmmm... Anyway I m also having(probably Had ) the heating issue... First Kernel-Siyah 3.2.x was heating while talking in call also.. Used to heat up like anything. Now on Fluxi heat reduced but not completely.. Today I called my frend to McD to check his SGS2 phone.. His phone is purely stock and was runnning ICS official 4.0.3.. For normal use the phone dint heat, neither mine.. Now the heat game started when I watched a Video(Not HD) even in mine also But gud thing was mine was not as heated as his may be because of Kernel or anything I dunno.. The main thing s battery shouldn get heated too much... But I dunno many ppl not having heating issue... S2 s so thin that heat has too dissipate thru somewhere so it uses the camera region... Try using the phone with low brightness it might be helpful also try KI4(correct me if i m wrong!!) modem. I din try that modem yet...

Try pulling the battery for 5 minutes to let it cool, then replace it. You can also try under clocking to 800 /1000 mhz to save some battery and not let it go to 1200mhz

* i'm a big fan of Siyah Kernel and i tried most of its versions giving me the same result.
* i tried to make the device lock itself on the max usage with 800 MHz
* the battery's Temp is about 35 C
* i remember that 2.3.5 was the only version that i have which is not having this issue.
* it seems that everyone tried something and it worked for him but everybody's something is not working with me.
* the overheat issue is in arc and arc s too
* the other issue that am living in Egypt and Temp pretty high.

This phone is stupid sometimes. Just sat in my pocket for the last hour doing nothing.wifi off
The battery drops from 89% to 65%
I take the phone out and its super hot
Says 49 degrees which isnt dangerous but it is very noticable in the pocket and to hold. and the chart says the phone was awake through that whole time without the screen on.
As soon as I start using the phone again it starts to cool down.
Bit annoying how often this happens.
i never had this issue on gingerbread
is there a fix for it?
Install BetterBatteryStats and check which program causes the wakelock. While ago Google Chrome was known to create this issue.
I recently bought my Optimus G roughly a month ago. And the first thing I did was root and install the SlickJB rom. I am not to sure if it overheated when that was installed but later on I installed the Rootbox rom and I am definitely get overheating problems now even to the point to where it hurts to touch it sometimes. Does anyone know of a fix or anyone else with a similar problem?

Make sure your CPU isn't stuck in "performance" governor. I am having this problem with Shelnut's CM also. Have to change the governor every reboot.
Mine definitely gets hot if im like playing Vice City or something equally intensive for a long time, but not during normal use.
I've made it better by undervolting; mine seems most stable at -50.
Definitely look for a rogue app. Elixr has a 'top' function that is nice for showing processes using the most cpu at the current time. You'd probably be able to see something in BBS as well. I had some app go crazy (I forget what) blasting away at the processor when I shut the screen off, and I could feel the phone get hot in my pocket as I walked down the hall.
