Overheating? - AT&T LG Optimus G

I recently bought my Optimus G roughly a month ago. And the first thing I did was root and install the SlickJB rom. I am not to sure if it overheated when that was installed but later on I installed the Rootbox rom and I am definitely get overheating problems now even to the point to where it hurts to touch it sometimes. Does anyone know of a fix or anyone else with a similar problem?

Never had this problem before...ill do some searching around see if i find something.

Make sure your CPU isn't stuck in "performance" governor. I am having this problem with Shelnut's CM also. Have to change the governor every reboot.

Mine definitely gets hot if im like playing Vice City or something equally intensive for a long time, but not during normal use.
I've made it better by undervolting; mine seems most stable at -50.

Definitely look for a rogue app. Elixr has a 'top' function that is nice for showing processes using the most cpu at the current time. You'd probably be able to see something in BBS as well. I had some app go crazy (I forget what) blasting away at the processor when I shut the screen off, and I could feel the phone get hot in my pocket as I walked down the hall.

[Q] Super lagggg...

So recently my eris has been lagging really bad to the point where its pissing me off. it was working fine for a couple of month then the lag started so i factory reset my phone but the lag is still there. it would lag from 30 seconds to mins... I have the latest sensable rom on my phone and i dont think its the rom that is bad..
I was wondering what i can do about this lag.. is my phone broken? Another thing to add is that when the lag started my trackball also started to mess up it occasionally... a lot... moves the left. connection?
If your trackball is starting to scroll to the left at random times, then the lag could definitely be a hardware issue. I had the same issue before I got a replacement Eris. If your phone is still within warranty, then I would take it in and ask for a replacement.
i bought my phone used off of ebay... so i dont think i have warranty...

I remember seeing a thread long time ago with a guide about cleaning underneath the trackball. Removing lint and other particles might help your situation.
Just did a search. There are more thread regarding it, but here is one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=716681
Have you changed your cpu frequency lately? It might not like the speed you are running it at. Also if you are using the setcpu widget that can cause problems.

thanks for the tip on fixing the trackball. it kinda works for me it doesnt scroll to the left as often now. but im still laggggggging like crazy.
i dont know how to change the cpu... i never messed with oc. just install the rom and thats it.

What ROM are you using? Many of the custom ROMs have SetCPU built in. It is fairly simple to use. Just adjust the slider bars for the minimum and maximum speeds. If you set it too high, it can cause kernel panic, which may result in random reboots and lag at times. Higher speeds also consume more battery power. If the minimum is too low, it might take a bit longer to wake up, once the screen is off.
I'm using senseable Rom. There isn't the setcpu app.

Sgs2 overheating

Hi all,
My phone heats up tremendously when charging or playing games, I've had a good look through xda and only found a few other ppl with similar issues, but there was no solution or a workaround to be found. So I'm not sure whether it's a fault with my phone and i should take it back ?
What do ppl think!?!
Thanks in advance
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I don't believe the device has any overheating issues, but the people are thinking that it's overheating, that's why there are many threads but no answers, because there is no answer practically. Besides, only saying overheating doesn't mean anything unless you mention the temperature.
Also, if you play games or charging the phone, it will be hot, it is normal.
Regards.
It's normal. Bear in mind that you are using a very slim dual core phone. So it'll become hot if you are playing games or using CPU centric apps.
1: Load Dungeon Defenders
2: Play for half an hour on low brightness, and with it scaled down a bit to help
3: Cant touch screen, burny kinda pain
..... Makes me cry

As a workaround you can try underclocking your phone.
Hi, I had this issue when I bought the phone. I took it to the service centre and the guy there said that there was some moisture in the phone (I dont know whether it was real or not) and that he had cleaned the phone. The problem was not solved until I started using custom roms and kernels. You can also try doing the same.

there are app on the market that will give you info about the phone and temp.
but it is still a fast phone in a small case
Now this the billions't thread on heating .......
Take time, search and find the answers already given ......
The heat is NORMAL when sgs 2 is used at it's limit (gaming , hd video watching, navigation etc. )
E.g. an Intel i7 dual core notebook cpu has a max. design temp of 105 deg C !!!!!!!
So what ? If You can't accept the reality of physics (high cap cpu = high temp produced) sell Your phone ......
I wonder if some posters here attended basic school physics lessons at all .....

@troed- Ahh, don't go harsh on them mate. They will realize they are wrong, but that will take time sadly.
@ troed
Don't be a smart arse no one likes one.
I was merely putting out my issue to see whether others are experiencing the same and if they've something about it.
I know all about dual core etc etc
I was shocked to find the temperature reach 50c/122f (should've mentioned in 1st post) when charging and around 46c gaming etc
Thanks to all with constructive comments.

Thats fine temp mate.
Good luck.

One tip I'd recommend is to avoid using the phone if it's charging. Samsung themselves say this.
It is a very powerful phone, in a very thin case, you will feel the heat more than in the brick you had before
46°c is a good temp.
Feels warm to the touch, ofcourse.
But nothing to worry about. As soon as it goes over 55-60°c i would start worrying.

I guess I was hoping that it maybe a rogue app causing the problem or maybe changing to a different kernal may reduce the amount of heat.
Sounds like I'll just have learn live it! At least it keep my hands warm in the winter. Lol

I could use my SGS2 for BBQ in the summer time.
@troed
Another arrogant person making smartass comments. XDA is certainly going down hill. I didn't realise that a background in physics was a requirement to own a phone.
If you have nothing useful to say...don't say anything. It just highlights the type of individual that you are, which isn't very flattering.

Yes, the problem is true,, when I first bought my phone a month ago, I tried playing Asphalt 6, and my phone got soo hot I couldn't hold it anymore,, it exceeded 50 deg.C
But then I updated my phone, and the problem was gone.. don't get my wrong it still heats a bit,, but never more than 40 deg.C (you can still use your phone at that temp.).. and some people said the problem vanishes completely when upgrading to Gingerbread 2.3.4
Hope that helped

Agree. Upgrading to 2.3.4 really helps to reduce a little bit of temp.
more heat causes faster battery drain

[Q] Running Hot - Any suggestions?

My first time posting here, so please be gentle.
I've had my SGS2 for around 6 months now, its an unlocked ASIA (as I live in BKK). I noticed on the original stock firmware that the phone was running hot, as in the back panel around the camera would heat up to the point I could feel it in my pocket. This would normally happen if I was using a game like angry birds, or a psx emulator. But sometimes it would happen in the browser under normal conditions. I just thought this may be a issue with dual core phones, so I took this as a 'feature' and accepted it.
But now lots of people I work with have this phone, and it came up in conversation about heat. Everyone stated they do not have this issue, that the phone remains cool all the time.
I have moved between many different ROMs, and have finally stuck with Westcrips ICS ROM. Then a strange thing happened, the heat issue goes away with version 8.4. Phone is cool all the time, even playing my PSX emulator in software mode. Battery also increased from 12 hours to 16-18 hours.
But now I just moved up to 9.3, and its back again, the front screen is very hot to touch when using things like the MX video player, or surfin the web. And if I launch a game ... well, forget about it. The battery drain is immense to, be lucky if I pull an hour of use like that.
Anyone else suffer from this? Hardware fault? I can't take it back because my flash counter is probably in the 20's now, and I can't find a reset JIG in Bangkok.
Cheers.
FYI, I always do a clean wipe, dalvik / cache / permissions.
same issued here, phone bought from Thailand also. Phone getting hot when browser, downloading and playing some games( not all). And its really hot
Changing Rom and kernel sometimes solved it for awhile but eventually will come back.
Looking for solution also
Thanks

Thanks for getting back to me.
The one I know that fixes it is Resurrection 8.4. Its a dam good rom, and given me the best battery life (once I got 20 hours with normal use). But there is an issue with touch screen sensitivity that makes it annoying.
Maybe its something to do with the Kernel on the Asian models?
If I find a fix I'll pm you.
Hmmm mine only gets uncomfortably hot when playing some 3d games. Didn't experience the same level of heat when just browsing though... It just gets a little warm but far from gaming temps.
What i did was undervolt and underclock when playing. It did reduce the heat and extend the battery though i admit it's not the best solution / workaround.

Well it looks like the ICS kernel is not supported right now under Tegrak. It is bleeding edge.
I tried setCPU to under clock but ended up with a lot of slow down and some full system freezes.
Guess its back to 8.4 until I find a more definitive answer.

Since you're using Westcrip's Resurrection Remix, you can get rid of the triangle by using Chainfire's TriangleAway app - I'm using Resurrection too and it got rid of the flash counter and the triangle.
TriangleAway should work on all ICS roms though.
Strange, installed triangle away yesterday evening. Work like a charm, so I guess if I need to return I can now.

Holy hell Batman at the Battery Drain!

Is anyone else getting Android OS around 50-60% battery use?
I have tried every ROM included going back to stock. I have ran the phone with nothing but Stock and no apps installed for a day and still get the same drain so I can only assume its a kernel issue.
I am not familiar with LG products in the slightest, but I had a yellow screen of death the other day...something I have never seen in my years with samsung android products. Anyone have any idea what this is maybe it is pointing to a hardware issue?
LG made a great phone, but I don't think I will keep it much longer. Locked boot loaders, no sources, and history of terrible updates have me regretting purchasing this phone. I tried my hand at building a working jb release when I first got the phone and it is going to take a skill set I do not have and I hate waiting on a company to do what they've never done in the past..

Easy, brother. I have only had one of my apps/utilities run higher than AndroidOS ever on this phone; however, that said, I think there is a problem with the way it's being calculated. I'm getting really good battery life with good sleep and still AndroidOS shows the highest by far. I know that's abnormal for it to be so high and still get good battery life, but it is what it is.
Edit: you've installed the fast dormancy toggle, right? As for the yellow screen, I've seen it once in my two months with the phone, just rebooted and carried on. Forgot what they said it was...but it is here in this forum somewhere.

I was just about to post something similar. Andriod OS being high kind of makes sense if nothing else is using the battery, although you would expect that number to fall significantly with increased screen on time and heavy app usage, which it doesn't ever seem to.
I've been having horrible battery drain lately. I'm currently traveling for business, and just use my OG for web surfing and stuff when I'm in my hotel. I leave the phone in airplane mode, with WiFi on. About two weeks ago, when I was on The Base 0.4 in that same configuration, my battery would drain maybe 1% an hour while I was sleeping.
Recently I've been on The Base 0.7.3, and my battery drains over 5% an hour while I'm sleeping. This means no screen on, no apps running, and even turning WiFi off! How does it use that much battery when it's not doing anything? Now, I'm not entirely sure what kernel I'm running. The first time I installed The Base 0.7.3 I used sk8's kernel. After getting poor battery life, I reflashed 0.7 and 0.7.3, this time choosing the freegee kernel. I'm not actually sure if the kernel changed though.
Anyway, I think I'll post again tomorrow with some screenshots from Better Battery Stats+ and CPU Spy.
I'm wondering if this recent botched update had the battery fixes we need. Hopefully they'll re-release it soon.

When I would get bad drain, which has happened several times, I could narrow it down to a couple things in order to solve the problem.
In my case it would always happen after installing Google+. Uninstall and reboot would usually fix the issue. If I got drain on a fresh install without g+ installed, I found that if I installed the 2.2 kernel separately as a stand alone zip, that would fix it. Don't know why but it may work for you too.
I don't have screen shots, but today I recharged at 38% after 3:10 of phone use and 1:55 screen on time and about 15 hours off charger. That's with Wi-Fi on the whole time and Bluetooth for about 9 hours. I have my work exchange account on active sync with push notifications. Facebook and Twitterer to 4 hour intervals. I'm underclocked to 1350 and using powersave gov with deadline.

Believe you are correct. There were issues on the Samsung Infuse and even the international SGS3 for a while... it was referred to as 'memory leak.' Has been worked out by devs on XDA. You can put memory leak in the XDA search above... it's above my pay grade.
Edit: It's great to see another RD here... hope you will reconsider keeping the phone and stay !!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I have Google+ uninstalled, but part of me thinks Google Now may be partially the culprit (although why that would be the case with all radios off, I don't know).
I'll try a fresh install of the 2.2 kernel and see if that helps. Thanks.
I can't speak for anyone else but FDT did wonders for my battery life. I was only able to go about 12 hours prior to disabling FD.

^^^ This is indeed worth considering.... I think the question then becomes why is it consistent among the 3 roms we are using? Maybe when JB source is out and something is built from source all will be good.

I would be less inclined to believe it is a faulty measure if we had a different ROM not built off stock (AOKP/CM10) that could produce different values. However, I seriously doubt anything built into either of the two custom ROM's is geared toward normalizing that reading. That's why they are both the same as the stock AndroidOS percentages. Jivy is probably right that it's a kernel issue. With the size battery we have, imagine the potential if it is a true reading (androidOS out-of-control) and we can get it under control down the road. We're talking double the current best battery life you've ever had on this phone at the very least.

Get BetterBatteryStats, select Since unplugged and Alarms to see what is waking the device (making it not go into a deep sleep). eBay was a big culprit for me.
The wakelock that keeps the phone awake during background data transfer (screen off) lasts 6 seconds (I am guessing it does it in multiples of 6s) regardless of how long the sync takes. Everytime email, facebook, gmail, drive, picasa, twitter, g+, google maps, ebay, calendar, contacts.. whatever wakes the phone to check something, it will be a minimum of 6 seconds.. This adds up over the course of the day and it is counted in the Android OS. Shut down syncs you don't absolutely want/need and this number will go down. All phones with the Snapdragon S4 Pro has it, especially the Nexus4. It seems they've done some kernel work to fix/reduce it but I havent really looked into it since I don't have that phone. I've seen complaints in the Droid DNA forum as well.

[HELP] Rezound overheating

Ever since I got my rezound, it overheats whenever I'm actually using it for apps. Phone temps normally are around 33°C-36°C but my phone gets up to around 45°C under load. Any tips on a fix or anything? I read somewhere updating radios was supposed to help, but it didn't.

Call Verizon and get a new one as it is a known issue. No fix on user end.
Keep calling and complaining about the same issue. You probably can eventually get a newer more expensive device (only refurbished).
Damn
Damn, that sucks. I bought it on Craigslist, so no warranty
I was about to ask too, but I got mine for free, so no warranty.

Replacing wont help either, I have had over 7 rez's same problem.
Are you Stock or custom Rom?
If your on a custom Rom, try one of Snuzzo's kernels
It helps
Mine even gets up past 55c when using skype
I've found that lowering the Max frequencies of both cores a bit delays the effect somewhat.
