Hey guys,
I'm deciding between the 3VO and the sg2. I've looked up comparisons of the two and it seems that the hardware is better on sg2 and software is better on 3vo. I'm thinking that the 3vo would probably get better devolopment tho.
So convince me why I should get the 3vo, I really don't know! I saw that the sg2 is like $700-$800 no contract in the UK, if true. Ill get the 3vo. Do you guys think it really costs that much?
i made a mistake and bought a samsung phone, that will never happen again. its nice to have working gps on my evo 3d.
Development wise the EVO 3D will be better I'm sure. There's a lot of great developers on this phone right now and will be more coming

That depends on a number of factors, time being the most important. If our mighty developers crack the phone and/or HTC unlocks it in the 30 day return window (starting on the 24th of June) then there is nothing to worry about and I absolutely assure you that the best and most development will be going on here on the E3D scene...
...once we hit that 30 day window the amount of developer interest is going to sink quickly, not to mention the untold thousands of E3D handsets from twitchy users (like myself) who can't stand the thought of having a locked phone or a phone that is unlocked late in the game with a lame-duck dev community.
Samsung has been sending out SGS2's to developers....and it doesn't have an encryption-signed bootloader.
Search for the thread "hey check out how powerful the EVO 3d is" (something like that) and you will see that hardware is not really superior either way. You could argue it either way and still not be correct.
The above, combined with the reputation of both should make HTC an easy choice....at least in my opinion.
Plus you are right, the software and development side of the 3vo should be a lot better.

I was in the same boat as you. I wanted to wait for the S2 to come out and compare but since my phone crapped out, I went with the 3D. Do we have a confirm release date for the S2 on Sprint yet?

If the developers are unable to crack the bootloader and HTC does not release the unlocked bootloader, then there will be almost 0 development on our phone.

No. There hasn't even been an official statement indicating that it is coming to Sprint. Last year I believe the phones arrival to Sprint was announced in mid-late July. Then, in early August the late August release date was announced. Looks like we may be seeing the same trend. Sadly, if the E3D is not unlocked soon, I may be getting an SGS2 as well though vastly prefer HTC's products over Samsung's.
If the SGS2 came out the same time I probably wouldve picked it over the 3d. In almost all reviews I've read that SGS2 is fast and unable to be slowed down. Tegra 2 games also will play once you root it and install chainfire. Look at this lengthy review below and I recommend watching some of the video comparisons with some other phones. If theres no full root on the 3d and as long as there's an official announcement of the SGS2 (regardless if its coming july or august)within 30 days that I've had my 3d then mines probably also going back.

That's just way too easy....
...though if Samsung had anything to do with it it was a brilliant maneuver.
If the phone came out tomorrow I would say the GSII. Development on the 3D is dead in the water & looks to stay that way unless HTC decides to unlock the bootloader & nand. Pound for pound the GSII looks to be the better phone hardwise if your read all of the reviews. But history tells us that Samsung is notorious for not supporting their devices & the dev community seems to like HTC products better but that may change with the 3D/Sensation debacle that is unfolding & Samsung seems to be catching on with support. Hard one to call right now. I'm gonna upgrade my Epic to the GSII or Prime if they come to Sprint but if this bootloader/nand situation doesn't get straightend out before 30 days the 3D is going back & I'll just have the OG Evo & GSII/Prime.

I had Verizon's version of the Galaxy S 1 and it was a huge disappointment. Not because of the hardware... the hardware as awesome which is why I bought it... but because of Samsung bloat, touchwiz and having to wait 6+ months for the 2.2 update to roll out. I wouldn't touch a Galaxy S 2 until Samsung shows they're able to support a phone for more than a month.
(Unless HTC fails to unlock their bootloader, in that case I'd swallow my pride and move to an S2)

who cares about mfgr support? If the hardware is good and the is a dev community...well...I'm in. GS2 already has most of CM7 ready....CDMA version would likely require a little tweaking, but, likely not much.

Mfgr support goes a long way, especially when major updates are concerned. Take the Epic for example. Before the official Froyo update we had a few leaks & ROMS built off those leaks but none of them (and I tried them all) came without a major bug or flaw. It's always better to base a ROM off of a official update rather than a leaked one.

There were no pure AOSP offerings? I am obviously not familiar at all with the landscape on the Samsung side of things--I ditched my moment for my EVO4G and haven't looked back....But I'd imagine that as long as they release their kernel source there would be a handful of pure AOSP roms, at the least....I see CM7 is almost together for the GS2, I'd imagine there would be the usual collection of CM based roms at the very least. I also see MIUI is being maintained for the GS2 already...
...just supply the kernel source and update the radios as needed. I'm well familiar with Samsung's desire to never update anything past release.

What's wrong with a little positive?
Lol.... Kinda the reason why I posted the thread I did. Just wanted to make sure the devs here know I appreciate their work. They are the true backbones in the android world. Google had the idea first, but the devs over there unfortunately have to design it for everybody, not just us who like to tinker. So that's where communities like this one are so valuable, and why Linux/android was the best idea for smart phones since the smart phone was invented.... Everybody is happy.

Let me put it this way.
Virtually every single issue I had with this phone was software related, and with the 2.3.4 update from HTC, almost all of them are gone.
This phone is great and from a software standpoint, it's almost there too.
HTC EVO 3D 9/10 and easily the best phone I've owned to date.
But then again, so was the EVO 4G and Touch Pro2.
HTC EVO 4G 8/10
HTC Touch Pro2 9.5/10 (while it scored higher, this was due to how awesome HTC Sense and Windows Mobile 6.1 were for me at the time and its worldphone capability. There was nothing I couldn't do with that phone.)

My evo3d has been perfect from day 1.
I never had to do a return, and any issues that I did have, like crummy 3g, etc., were solved after a little reading on my part...(not by taking the phone back six times). Do I have a dead pixel? I don't think so, but if you held a magnifying glass to my phone and told me that I did, I wouldn't be surprised...(same thing goes for my screen possibly being tilted by one pixel as well). I seriously do not get it when I see complaints like that. I don't measure the pixels on a new TV, nor do I measure the carpet trim under the doors when I buy a new car, to make sure the "shag ratio" is correct.
So yeah, I'm still loving every bit (pun intended) of my Evo3d.

I agree this does make me feel better but since the 3d now has plenty of working ICS builds i'm starting to think i might not NEED my evo lte. Considering dumping the preorder. I don't see much difference between the two now that i have ICS. Any thoughts? LTE non nonexistent , NFC (at least where i'm at) is also non nonexistent.
I do like the slightly bigger battery, and krait seems power friendly.

I'm buying it, but only because it's the next big thing. I'll probably order it this weekend, and sell my EVO 3D next weekend with all of it's accessories to pay for it.
I like the larger battery. The processor is a huge upgrade. Sense 4.0 with ImageSense will definitely be useful (I have a daughter and I'm always taking pictures when we're out. Although, I just bought a $1000 DSLR, but I don't like dragging it everywhere with me). The fact that this model has an SD card slot, AND 16GB onboard is a big selling point for me as well. 4.7" screen gives me more viewing area (I'd get a note, but I don't think I could EVER get out of having HTC Sense).
Yeah i forgot about the camera that is another big plus. Something else i've always wondered was the B!tch Everyone has for the non removable battery. On my OG Evo i had 6 batteries i carried around with me all the time. I hated that. Why not just buy one of those recharge packs and if you need battery in a pinch use that. So many ppl i've seen are throwing this under the bus because of not being able to remove the battery.

Its permanent. There is also a temp custom clockwork recovery that they are using to flash ROMs. They have a couple guys who have S-off on their phones but its still a WIP to get the bootloader unlocked. Looks really good for EVO LTE owners so far.
I am still on the fence about getting it. Due for my last yearly upgrade on June 1, but with the ICS leaks and the impending official release, I think I will be good for at least a little while longer. This phone getting root would drive my decision a little further to one side or the other.
Another point I forgot to mention is ACTUALLY having a true Beats capable phone. Not kinda works/kinda doesn't.

I'm eligible for my upgrade in Mid-Nov. I'm on the fence as between the 4G LTE and Samsung GSIII. Or, I could wait a little longer, maybe after new year, and see what is planned for Sprint's new Android lineup (if any).
I had always thought I would just stick with HTC but I am not sure anymore. The fixed battery really scares me. I rely on swapping batteries in my EVO 3D often and I have chargers everywhere as it is. That is really the only thing that makes me consider Samsung.
Anyone who's had a 4G LTE for a while now wish they got a GSIII? How is having a fixed battery?

No remorse at all love the phone fixed battery is not a issue as most users are averaging 15 hrs a charge

There are quite a few people who feel remorse over the multitasking issue, where even with most custom ROMs you'll still have the problem that the phone does not multitask properly. This is fixed with AOSP ROMs and I'm sure there will eventually be a legitimate fix for the problem on Sense, but as of now it's something that people have to put up with. I never really noticed it or was bothered by it, but a lot of people here are upset by it so I would keep that in mind.
Buy the Galaxy S III, then trade with me. My EVO LTE is superb. Kept in an Otterbox all of its life.

Never been an issue for me, and many others here and in other forums. As you know, battery life is highly dependant on your particular useage and can vary greatly from person to person.
There are many EVO vs GS3 type threads, but it basically comes down to personal preference. But don't let someone try to BS you into thinking the GS3 is "faster" because it has 2 GBs, lol.
I love the EVO LTE but I have s-off which was Important to me. The current hboots don't have it at the moment.
If that's important to you I'd go with the s3. Or wait for the new nexus which will probably have s3 specs but be straight aosp and guaranteed key lime pie next year.
I am assuming that the trend will continue where the Nexus phone has similar specs to the previous Galaxy S version.

But what is the ETA for the "new Nexus," particularly on Sprint?
A little.
The phone is nice, but it has issues. This is the first HTC phone I've been disappointed with...everyone else hated the 3D but I enjoyed that phone.
The muliti tasking, Wifi constantly dropping, sense weather widget constantly showing thunderstorms, the way Sense is still bloated and laggy at times...that and the useless HTC Hub never offering anything new, or widgets that should be common. I'm just starting to grow tired of it all honestly.
A lot of the problem can be fixed with AOSP roms, but then you lose the one real thing that made this phone, the badass Sense camera we have. I wouldn't say I'm anti Htc or anti Evo LTE..but I am disappointed.

I think it will be closer to when Verizon releases their phone. The last 1 was released in December for them. And I think the Nexus S was released in November of 2010.
So I think by the time your upgrade comes around in the middle of November you will know what's going to happen with the next Nexus phone.
Pure speculation of course.

I have a little remorse. Had an SGIII for about 2 - 3 days, bricked it and got an Evo LTE. It did seem a little faster operating the SGIII, the screen seemed a tad bit bigger, and I kinda miss the little touchwiz "shortcuts." But the Evo feels more sturdy and I had to have the kickstand. As of right now, the SGIII is easier to root but I found Fox fi for my tethering fix and I'll play with some of these launchers on the market til a new root for the Evo comes out.

TBH, a lot of what I heard supports SGIII.
Get it, dont worry about unlocking/rooting. Slap a AOSP Rom on or go with TouchWhiz (which people tend to be liking more than Sense it seems). Then also have the option of swapping an extra battery if you so desire. I dont know, this thread just gave me more questions. I feel even more on the fence.
I do appreciate all the HONEST feedback though. This is exactly what I wanted. TBH, I may just keep the EVO 3D a little longer than anticipated and see how things play out. I dont need the extra CPU power necessarily and I wont be gaining LTE. My 3VO is just how I like it now too...

Why is it that our phones are under rated. I mean seriously? I see so many reports that the GS3 is the best Android phone of fall 2012, I would disagree. Although it is a great phone, I would not think that it is the best, if anything I would say EVO LTE and GS3 would be tied at that spot. Would anyone disagree? This is really irritating me!
Its not underrated, its more like under the radar. Lets face it the EVO is a small name in the industry when you have a device across all carriers which is selling at record numbers. The EVO is viewed more as the little engine that could.

So I wonder why they didnt just keep the EVO name across the board rather than come out with the One Series? IMO, I think that the sales for the EVO name aren't gonna stick in the future when they are bringing out same products with different names. Samsung and Apple both market for pretty much one specific phone and run with it, aside from the new Galaxy Notes

Don't forget the promo for the Galaxy SIII is out of control, almost every other commercial is for Samsung that's another big part of that. It has become the house good name for android. Everybody and there mom knows about the SIII and the Iphone even if they don't look at phone the way we do because they have done a great job commercializing the phones.

The EVO is not as popular but the one x is up there with the top devices.

Well, we all know the evo line has had its red headed stepchildren through the generations. I don't care what anyone says about the LTE, IMHO, I made the right choice.

Little exposure compared to its predecessor & even less than the OG EVO which had a lot of TV time.

Does anyone care whether or not our phone gets the publicity? As far as I'm concerned we have the best kept secret in smartphones.
The constant bashing for the LTE issue is not helping it either. Sprint still has not said officially that they are working on a fix with HTC. This phone had LTE issue in the lab before it launched but Sprint needed the phone to launch otherwise they would risk losing many accounts coming off their 2 year with no new flagship phone to go to. So it was rushed out the gate, and HTC/Sprint have tried to fix the modem twice with an OTA, but have failed both times. My hope that a 3rd round will correct the issue is getting weaker by the day.
I think I'll be taking advantage of the GS3 upgrade on Black Friday and rotating the "EVO Can't do-LTE" to of my other lines that really doesn't care about 4g. Love the EVO's battery life, screen, performance etc, but the LTE issue just hits hard. Kinda like buying a sports car with a nice V8, it looks good, but the manufacturer just hasn't figured out how to get the computer to make all 8 cylinders fire correctly so it's running on 4 cylinders for now.

The difference between HTC and Samsung, I believe, is their market approach.
Samsung has it right. They sell one major phone on multiple carriers, advertise it in ways that appeal to their largest audience (probably 15-35). And they have a few other lower end phones too.
HTC doesn't understand this, I suppose. The One series was halfway there. But then the EVO is too exclusive. Then, to dig HTC deeper into their hole, instead of focusing on marketing and updates for the One series line up, they for some reason think they would come out ahead by spending time and money in development for these new One X+ things.
WTF?
Though I am an HTC fanboy, mostly a Sense Fanboy, I don't deny HTC's bad strategies as a company. If I didn't think TouchWiz looked like something from the Dollar General, I might get a GS3. But what it comes down to when a user chooses a phone today, is what User Interface does that person prefer? Sense? TouchWiz? iOS? BlackberryOS? That is the determining factor, I believe.

BTW,
I loved the other day when a coworker was showing off her new iPhone 5 to everyone who was gathered around. She said, "AND IT DOES VOICE TO TEXT NOW!"
Sorry, had to make fun.
i work at best buy and everyone looking for the gs3, after showing them my phone. they are like i will take that one. i have yet to have a customer take the gs3 over the evo. but they just didnt know the evo was even out. and they were coming from the old one.
i think the evo lte is the best phone out.. not just because i have it but the screen is bangin.. battery life is great.. the lte beats any other phone in quadrants.. linpacks.. antutu benchmarks u name it.. it is funny how the LTE gets NO love at all.. when ever i read write ups on phone tec the LTE never ever gets mentioned.. the LTE is the beast thats nobody talks about.. the gs3 is a dope phone also i just dont like touch wiz at all.. im a HTC guy.. my babys mother has the gs3 i rooted it for her and flashed a few roms on it.. 2 top phones out rite now the evo lte & the gs3!!! :good:
If you ask me, I say this phone is overrated to be honest. This is coming from someone that has owned all 3 of the EVOs. The specs of the phone looks great on paper, but the phone just doesn't perform that well in the real world. Seems like there's more time spent trying to get the phone to run right instead of just enjoying it. HTC failed BIG TIME when they screwed-up the phone's ability to multitask properly. I've been a member of this site for over 6 years and have a very low post count since I've mainly lurked throughout the years. A large portion of my current post count is because of this EVO and trying to get it to run smoothly. This is my second one, btw.
Anytime you have to rely on a web site to fix multiple problems for things that a manufacturer should have made sure were working properly before selling to consumers equals a huge fail IMO. There's a large portion of people on these forums that don't mind spending all of their free time tinkering and fixing their phones, but for an average consumer that leads a busy lifestyle, do you really think they want that kind of hassle, especially if they're not tech savvy? HELL NO!!!

The EVO is exclusive to Sprint, they created the brand because the needed a big push to compete with the other service providers. They weren't just trying to out do Apple, never were. The Apple bashing was to help solidify the brand as a recognizable device easily capable of matching the top smartphone at the time. The biggest problem is that the EVO line is Sprint exclusive, its not underrated by any means
Lol...I own both. I love both
Both will be old news within 2 months lol

I agree completely.
I also think the built in kickstand sets the EVO line apart from others . I watch a lot of netflix at work and see other peeps.using books to hold there phone up
I wish it was a bit beefier but its just as strong as the old kick stand and has the built in spring for extra support. I like that u can flip it any way I want and still prop it up
