custom rom do come with there own pro's and con's u have to check the changelog of that rom to see whats different in it also some apps which do require root previlage wrks fine with custom roms rather than stock one's
stock roms do have better batt life compared 2 custom ones at the cost of customization with there dull and boring looks

thanks for your reply i guess its just finding the correct balance between customization and battery life then. cheers

go with custom
I had the exact same thoughts when i first decided to flash a custom rom.
Personally i would now flash a custom rom at the drop of a hat, however as the previous comment said there are pros and cons.
do some research on roms with functionality that you require and you'll find one you want to flash no doubt.
hope i helped
i am now running CM9 and its so smooth and looks amazing, a millions times better than stock in almost every way!

Check out the ROM and the comments which people have wrote. Some of them may be good and others may be bad.. you'll be able to work out the missing features of the custom rom bother you or not ^__^ That's how I work out whether to install the ROM XD Most ICS ROM's have their benefits and cons, Gingerbread would be considered the most stable Hope this helps you

Highly customizable. You can overclock, undervolt, theme, use different launchers. To me they're faster too.

thanks again guys !!

What about if I install a custom kernel, but keep my stock rom? Is there any benefit at all?
To clarify: I'm on i19100 4.0.3 which I've recently rooted. Thinking of installing Siyah 3.5.2 but for now I want to keep my stock (Bell) ROM. What do I stand to gain when I get the Siyah kernel, if anything? Or is the kernel really *only* just a prerequisite to get a custom ROM?
Thanks!

But there's already no brick bug on 4.0.3 right? So... what exactly would I gain with the Siyah kernel?
The only thing I can think of is CPU/kernel modding

One BIG reason I'm on stock ROM and KERNEL is that currently no custom Kernel supports MHL (please correct me if I'm wrong)
For me this is a big problem as I'm always watching movies and playing games on my TV with my phone

It's the ROM, not the kernel, that determines if MHL fully works.
Apparently video works with AOSP, but not full mirror of the display.
However, if you want full mirroring, you'll need to be on a stock Samsung based ROM.
That said, you can still run a custom kernel, such as Siyah or SpeedMod, and MHL will still work as long as you remain on the Samsung based ROM.
I'm currently running stock XWLPX with Siyah 4.1.4, and MHL works fully for me.

Should I flash a ROM? or just root?

Hey guys. I just got my unlocked S2. After looking around I like the default apps and stuff. Kies Air is awesome too. If I flash do I lose those apps? Am an experienced user. And think yeah but dunno. Worth flashing a ROM? stock stuff is nice.

I have been thinking the same to!
Hello there. It depends on what you are flashing. There are two kinds of roms, those based on official sammy roms and ASOP roms (like cyanogen) which are clean and built from scratch. If you don't want to lose the other apps I recommend you flash a rom based on official sammy roms or just root because usually ASOP roms don't contain much and they can't use any sammy based programs/apks.

Yeah, I like them too. You could try:
Lite'ning Rom
Exynos Extreme
Criskelo Rom
I've tried these and they're good. Samsung goodness but faster and snappier. Enjoy flashing.
Basics are you root if you need root it does not make your phone go faster .
Custom roms may or may not wipe apps its all in the description of each rom .
Little performance difference between custom and stock rom .
jje
Root- It's a must imo.
A Custom ROM- Depends on how mad you are about them. I am not.
I agree just root with cfroot if you like the stock apps etc.
Personally I think KI8 is worth a look.

Which custom ROM is 99-100% bug free ?

So I want to install some custom ROM but as I can see EVERY ROM has some bugs and I really hate that, is there any ROM that can be installed and that they are bug free, I want to use the phone, not flash it every week. I really like CriskeloROM, it looks great and it has that great camera tweak for better sound but it has some BT issues etc. So other are, MIUI, Cyanogen and Darkys, are they bug free ?
Thanks
MIUI based on CM7 & AOSP, CM7 based on AOSP, both of these are not yet stable but good enough for daily usage, camera's are much weaker compared to stock Samsung.
Samsung based roms stick with something based on stock, like VillainRom, KitchenRom, and such. Plenty to choose from.
Or custom roms such as Cog, CheckRom, HyperDroid, plenty to choose from. Read each one and see what users are saying about them, best way is experimenting yourself.
Then either stick with CF Root as a kernel based on stock or experiment with others like Speedmod, Siyah and a like.
Asking a general question like this will usually lead to comments from users on roms they are currently on saying its the best etc, so you'd be even more lost!
I could say X is good Y would say Z is good and such
for one why do you want to flash a custom ROM? first answert that to yourself
if answer comes i rerally dont want, then simply root your phone.
you can always flash stock newer roms like 2.3.5 roms
i for one actually dont need custom roms as im very much happy with stock and anything i cant do on stock i can after root.
i used to use custom roms when on my older htc phones when stock were slower and custom roms were faster, but with this specs stock is fast enough.
Thanks to both. Well, I want to have that better camera that has better video and sound and also I like those lock screen on CriskeloROM with shortcuts like HTC. And I hope that they have better battery and are fasgter than stock !? If, not, is there 2.3.5 stock that has Croatian language and I coul try ti use that rooted first and remove some Samsung annoying apps, right now KIES says 2.3.3 is the latest. I definitely dont want worse camera on my phone, only better so pelase direct me in the right way because I dont know where I can find stock 2.3.5 woth better camera app.
Tnx a lot
Cognition for me. Always install ROMs fresh to prevent problems.
Go for a KI4 rom, Criskelo had modified the camera for that 2.3.5 version you can download and just replace using a root file explorer.
As for rom, I'd say look into RomKitchen, optimized stock rom and works well. The guys over there are also very nice and helpful. Like most tbh.
Ok, but can you please point me what I need ? I have CF-Root now and I have read that I should not use ROM Manager for backup of current ROM and I dont know how do make NANDroid backup ? Is that with 3 button combo and then I have that option ?
Also, I see that there are more than one thread with RomKitchen name in it, which one should I take and how can I know if they have croatian because I didnt find that info on any ROM. I can backup my ROM with CWM app ? I have just clicked it and it has rebooted and backuping something on internal memory, I didnt turn on the phone with 3 button combo.
EDIT: is this the one, in the 2nd post ?

Tnx
One more thing, if I make complete backup with Titanium and then restore it on some ROM which does not have stock Samsung apps will it be ok then and it will not restore those apps ?
Ah wait, they don't do KI4, only KI8 & KI3 in kitchen.
To flash a rom via CWM, vol up + home + power, I recommend installing fresh, so wipe factory data, cache and dalvik cache under advanced.
Use Titanium to only back up app data for your applications and no system data.
You can use KI8 or KI3 those are good to, KI8 being newer, or from their post KJ1.
http://romkitchen.org/sgs2/?s=generator
I have donwloaded this KitchenApp and there I can see more ROMs and other oprion, I dont need to install other kernel ? Now I have XWKF3. When I choose everything I just press download and it will download it on my phone and from that Kitchen app I can install that ROM ? I can make the ROM in app and here online, it says GAlaxy S but I hope it is for i9100. I generate ROM and then transfer it to root of the mass storage and then flash it trough KitchenPro app on the phone ? It will NOT erase my photos and backups on mass memory ? What backup and with what app should I make before flashing ? I have made some with ROM Manager, I hope it is ok.
What Model and Kernel to choose ?
But if I want to backup apps and widgets from the Market with Titanium ? Or just choose thoe market apps and not system apps and settings ?
Thank you VERY much for your patience but when I make it one time then I will learn, now I have like zillion questions because I come from iPhone 4.
What kitchen app?
Oh you are using CheckROM? That's the newer one, I was talking about RomKitchen.

@seavers11: please dont mess with my head with another ROM )) I must take one that is bugfree and that it looks great, I dont mind speed and that stupid quadrant score.
CheckRom is good, the kitchen app allows for easy customization.
Just trying out GingerMod and that's lovely as well. AOSP feel based on Samsung firmware with mostly AOSP apps but with some goodies from Samsung left over like camera and such.

Depends on were you live for CSC and modem. I use UK csc and KI1 modem as it gives me better data coverage.

But go for something stable maybe SpeedMod or CF root based on stock later you can experiment with other kernels.

OMG i just checked that rom and it looks amazing! built for touchwiz haters like me, who still admit that the samsung browser and camera app are far better than stock android
The new Checkrom and Leo's kitchen is very solid, I don't think there's anything bugfree but it gives the easiest option I've seen to try different builds.

I'm new to s2

Heys guy I just brought a S2 and it will arrive in 4 more days, been using a x10i and has been rooting and installing custom rom.
Now I'm new to S2, any thing in particular that I should know?
What is the Original Android Development and the Android Development difference?
Which is the some of the recommended ROM (no bugs, don't want MIUI) since there's really a lot custom rom compared to my previous x10i.
And one more question, what is the price of the HDTV Adapter? Can I connect S2 to a just HD ready tv with hdmi port? Or it must be a full HD tv?

Original android is supposed to be ASOP tweaks/roms whereäs the other has to do with touchwiz (I believe, but then again I've seen threads crossposted in the wrong section all the time). As for ROMs, I would personally stay far away from the ICS ROMs because they're nowhere near ready for daily use; there are many bugs and problems. When looking through firmwares there's no difference between XW and XX other than the countries that the ROM was released into, you can still flash these ROMs for use anywhere in the world. Personally I'm using XXKK5 because KL1 and above are developer builds with inconsistent framework changes. CheckROM KK5 is what I suggest for a stable ROM that works good. I also highly recommend JKay deluxe. CM7 is also an option, but I personally had problems with charging and was forced off the ROM. Your mileäge may vary. Also there are a ton of radio firmwares available: try out the latest revision and take note of your battery usage over a few days. Try others to see which works best for you. There's no real "golden" radio firmware. I personally use KH3 on AT&T in Phoenix.

If you wanna to try ICS ROMs, I will suggest you try simplistic. Now I use it as daily rom and I feel it's good enough.
And if you want to use HDTC Adapter , I suggest you stay in Stock Rom first. As I know, most custom roms don't support HDMI output.
There are no recommended roms. Try some out for yourself & see how you find them. A rom that works well for me will not necessarily give you the same experience.
for my opinion i suggest you flash cm7
but if like the intersting things, just flash cm7/andyX

Ricey
wait for cm9, i've tried the devel vers and is very fast!
Just a suggestion
Hiya! Well, since you haven't got your phone yet, I would suggest you play around with your stock ROM first. The Original Android Development is for AOSP ROMs, ROMs that were created from scratch. The Android Development section is for custom tweaked versions of the stock ROM if I'm not mistaken.
I'm currently using Simplistic ICS but it has its fair share of bugs. You might wanna try insanity ii. It's a nice AOSP ROM. Never had FC's and it's amazingly fast and battery life is great. Good luck!
Hi bud, good choice of phone. If you want best standard ginger bread go to original development and flash intratech KK5 original Sammy ROM it's seamless!!!
Or, like me and you want to jump into ICS go to www.darkyrom.com and flash facieto's ICS LP2 THEN on top of that, upgrade to his LP6! Came out this week and it's seamless and crash free, all works!

Stock ROM, or any ROM based on stock. It needs the Samsung framework. So nothing that is pure AOSP (such as CM or MIUI) will work. If you want a ROM that is as close to AOSP as possible that still supports the MHL adapter, try GingerMOD.

See above, but there are many others. I don't personally use any of them (I'm still on stock, rooted, modded myself), so I can't recommend one above any others. It's a personal preference anyways, so you should just try some and decide yourself.

[Q]About custom ROM's based in 4.1.2

Hello,
I've been frequently checking the web for the official JB update and everything i've always have read is that it will be released soon, not OTA yet so I'm going a bit desperated about having JB on my s2. I'm actually on 4.0.4 official (yeah, the brick evil kernel) and I'm pretty happy with it but I'm very curious about all those 4.1.2 custom ROM's roaming around the net.
What's your advice for this ROM's? Are they worthy to install them at this point in my device? Are they fully working with all the JB functions? Or at this point should I wait for the official ROM and give chance the community to work in ROM's based on it?
Greetings, any advice/hint will be much apprecciated.

Well regardless of what above poster says, no they are not fully working. However the bugs that are present are not serious and most people will not come across them.
However I would HIGHLY recommend that if you flash the leaked stock rom or a custom one based on it you will need to flash Joboo kernel as it fixes the most annoying bug which is the lock screen delay which is really bloody annoying. It also increases battery life as Philz kernel is bad for this. You can also freeze non-needed stock apps to increase life more.
By the way incase you didnt know, since you have 4.0.4 stock you dont need to worry about the brick bug if you simply flash a custom kernel like Siyah instead of keeping stock.
Okay, they are not fully working I guess. I can always be wrong.
Still, reading time.

Yeah, actually I did know that I could flash Siyah to avoid the brick risk but I just wanted to do it all at the same time, I mean, root -> flash Siyah ->jump to another custom ROM. That's why my question about waiting for stock 4.1.2 for more stable ROM's before flashing and rooting :victory:

You dont need to "root" and then flash Siyah, Siyah gives you root.
If coming from stock rom/kernel all you need to do is....
Flashing custom rom:
Flash Siyah kernel via ODIN
Reboot into custom recovery
Wipe data/factory reset
Flash rom zip (and gapps if using CM based rom)
Reboot device.
Note that flashing a custom rom will come with its own kernel so it replaces Siyah.
Flashing Stock Rom:
Flash stock rom via ODIN
Flash compatible custom kernel
Note: If you using leaked JB you should use nothing but the Joboo kernel. If flashing GB or ICS rom you should use Siyah.

[Q] cm stable or neat rom lite

hey all
so this is basic, what has more speed and extra battery life? according to your normal usage and kernel.
i like neatrom lite because of the way its been stripped down and it has all i need

My wife has neat rom on her phone, she likes that because she is not interested in mods etc, in some ways it seems smooth and is certainly very stable. However, I prefer CM based ROMs with custom kernels ala dorimanx or Apolo, and recently my battery life and performance on 4.3.1 compared to my wifes 4.1.2 has far outstripped my her neatrom. That being said, my phone is softbricked until I can replace the mini usb tomorrow as I had an issue today with my set up, so wiped rom to put a backup on, and then discovered I have no root and thus can't get back into recovery and have no rom to boot into, no usb means no odin, thus I am without phone until I get usb fixed. I guess thats the long and short of messing around with custom v stock, custom rom = more risk but potentially greater potential to implement the latest code, stock ROM = safe and reliable.
All that I have said is just my opinion based on my experience, I urge you to get your own and have fun doing it
Lite neatrom with apolo is crazy I can run a whole day with semi-aggressive usage! I just saw the CM had it stable on i9100 very lately thus I liked to try.
