I'm rooted, s-off, on T-Mo ICS, CWM 5.0.2.6 and every time I try to run fix permissions, it freezes. It just doesn't work and I have to pull my battery.
Is this an ICS issue or a Me issue?
Thanks!
Install 4EXT recovery and try again, think it's a CWM issue, the newer ones fix it.
I've never read up on doing that. Do I need to remove CWM or is it as simple as installing 4ext?
** EDIT**
Looks like, install the app, which will also install recovery. That will wipe out CWM.
Now, I will use 4EXT for everything instead of CWM. The only MAJOR difference is that I will need to separately flash a kernel if not included in the rom itself?
Will flashing this make me lose root or anything? And can I then uninstall ROM Manager?
The reason we recommend 4EXT is because it has the ability to flash the kernel at the time you're flashing the Rom.
The app itself requires root permission so No you won't loose root while using this app and recovery. If anything, its an improvement from Clockwork and Rom Manager.

The app is awesome. It's worth every penny. And this is the only recovery that I've used, on the Amaze, where Fix Permissions works and wiping Dalvik Works and everything else....works properly.
I mean the recovery is free and that's basically all you need. So if you don't want to spend $3 ( cheaper than a kids meal) the recovery will be just fine.

Yep, I was curious and used rom manager to flash the recovery... worked perfect. I enjoy being able to go into rom manager and select "reboot to recovery" instead of having to hold down button combination (i know, lazy).

I'm a big fan of Rom Manager. I use it to organize my backups. I've used since day one of the OG Evo and never had a problem with it. If anyone is having any bugs, go into the market and download rom manager and update clockwork mod recovery. Mines working flawlessly!
I remember a long time ago, people claimed that clockwork recovery had a problem with wiping cache and dalvik cache. Is that still an issue? Thats the only reason I stopped using rom manager back in the day.

there shouldnt be any issues when flashing the newest clockwork right? say, making a backup in the CWM that came with REVO and then trying to restore it with the newest clockwork? i feel like that is an issue simply because i made a backup of my stock rom with the newest recovery and i got the MD5 error, and i cant restore it. im doing a full backup and restore test right now, ill report back.
EDIT:alright so i was able to do a full restore with the newest clockwork. i guess i just got a bad NAND on my stock rom. and the funny thing is the same thing happend with a stock rom on my G2. what causes this damn MD5 error?
That would be appreciated by many here... Don't want to get stuck with no way to restore

I installed TWRP, but I'd like to be able to use the CWM Rom Manger. Can I download Rom Manager from the Market, and have it install CWM over my TWRP install?
Koushik basically has the option of making recovery porting easier, since there's no CWM here really, I've built both a touch and non touch versions.
Basically these are just the img files, I prefer not to make a flashable zip until some test it to confirm both work, I have a few ideas to build better versions, though I don't really see the need at the moment to implement though with 4EXT around, it's still good to have options.
Flash these recoveries manually or via hasoon's tool:
CWM Touch IMG

CWM Touchless IMG

what i don't understand with 4ext is that u need superuser to install it, but u need a custome recovery to install superuser, seems like dead loop? correct me if im wrong.
Install 4ext recovery first. Then if you want you can install the control application on Android which requires superuser.
Also, is this the latest version with incremental back ups?

You don't need superuser to install 4EXT, it can be installed via fastboot like any other recovery.

CWM has incremental backups now? All I can tell you is that it's the latest version for both touch and regular cwm recovery.
I was able to load the CWM Touch without S-Offing and flash my first Amaze ROM (successfully is TBD though)
How do you flash these via fastboot? Do I have to rename them?
Can someone tell me pros and cons of both 4ext recovery and cwm touch. Which one is better? I have 4ext, no issues so not sure if I should change it.

Hi well this is my second DNA trying to root destroyed the first one lol... Well anyways the first one I downloaded supersu and busybox and figured out it didn't work and I ruined it now.... This is my second phone I have flashed the superuser and binaries. I am figuring out that I have root but its not working correctly.. mostly my changes that I need root for are not lasting through reboot I'm not losing root but I'm losing my changes as in when I delete amazon its gone but when I reboot its back. my only assumption is that its because busybox is missing can anyone confirm this and is there any possible way where I can just get the busybox zip... I have been on the busybox.net website and seen the downloads but I would like confirmation before u destroy this phone to which I hope don't not happen.
Unless you have s-off or have flashed a new kernel, the system partition is right protected, even when you think it isn't. I think that is what is causing your problem.
Why don't you flash a room that already had root/busybix installed?

When first unlocking and rooting my phone, I thought the same thing about busy box. But what you need to do is flash a new kernel first and foremost which will remove write protection.

Reading your OP and the rest of your comments in this thread, you're all over the place. Things you are doing will not fix your original problem and trying to achieve s-off just because it looks popular and running into difficulties trying to achieve it only adds to problems and confusion. I suggest you step back, slow down and get familiar with terms before you break another phone. While a small portion of the info is EVO 4G specific, you should check these out for general knowledge:

Your root is probably sticking in between boots. As we don't have any ROMs that free up the wasted space in the system folder, it's pointless for you to try to delete apps that you don't want installed. You can simply go into Settings\Apps\All and force stop them and then disable. If that doesn't work, you can use Titanium Backup and hit the middle "Backup/Restore" tab. Click on the app you want and Freeze it (this will stop it from running.) If that doesn't float your boat, you can try to uninstall it.

Anything he does with will not stick through the boot because he doesn't really have root access. I had the exact same problem before flashing a writeable kernel. After I flashed DSB 2.5.4 [when I originally was going through the process] that corrected the whole busybox/binaries issue. Using Titanium Backup at this point is pointless as well because after he restarts his phone, they'll all be back.
Edit: Plus it will say you have root without a writeable kernel but you don't have write permissions to have things like uninstalling bloatware stick through a boot.

You're right. I had assumed he had unlocked and flashed an unsecure boot image before attempting to flash su and busybox. Perhaps I did assume too much. I'll refer him to here in that case.

So i just rerooted my thunderbolt and flashed cwm. The cwm verion is v4.0.4.1
and i read a post about cwm not backing up ics because i guess there are more than 10k files. But i didnt understand how they tried fixing it. Is there an easy way? i have ics and am not sure what is happening. the device hangs at backing up system and the bar is gray with not scrolling indicator. Please help, i want to try the official ics rom debloated and other roms.
Im not sure if i need to update my cwm version
I suggest ditching CWM and using 4ext Recovery.
You can install their free controller app HERE.
Once the app is installed, you can go into its settings and flash the latest version of 4ext Recovery from within the app.
There is a paid version of the app as well, but both the free and paid versions of the app use the same actual Recovery, just the app has some extra features in the paid one.
So basically, install THIS FREE APP and flash the latest 4ext Recovery from within the app.
It will replace CWM and allow you to backup and restore ICS roms.
Oh,... and it's miles better and more reliable all around.

No, the app I linked is what you use in place of Rom Manager.
It will install the actual Recovery from within the app after you confirm your device.
It is for all users, advanced and novice and works far better then CWM for current roms and for wiping the boot partition.

One last question that i cant find. Can i flash google now on the stock ics for my tb. i know how, jsut wondering if it would work. I have only tried on liquid smooth roms

4ext can flash every rom that CWM can and then some.
The reason your phone turns on like that is because you are using CWM Recovery.
But I've used it before. It didn't used to do this until I flashed touch or because ics. I updated and rooted so not sure.
Is 4ext really worth it?

It doesn't require much effort and is well worth it yes.
CWM is garbage and it is a bug in the Touch version that does it.
Has nothing to do with rooting the phone.
You never had CWM before you rooted and non touch versions didn't have the bug.
It's actually about as painless as can be to switch to 4ext and is miles better in every way.
Yes you need to flash new radios for the ICS roms.
Read the Op in my thread like I said in the PM and you will find it is all very simple to do and well worth the short time it takes to do. Or not.
Your call, but you have been told many times to ditch CWM and I pretty much require it or TWRP for my roms which are currently the only recent ones you will even find for the Bolt.
Install the free app I linked you before and flash the recovery, takes maybe 3 minutes.
Thank you. Your the only one who told me if it was better. I'm switching now. And true, don't think any Better roms are going to come out.
