In the past, I was always using 128 dpi and never really gave 96dpi a chance.
This morning, I accidentally discovered that my favourite car navigation GPS actually works in 96 dpi, although I had always thought that it only works in 192dpi. The only flaw is that I must use it in portrait mode, as it still does not work in landscape mode.
Like I mentioned in several post, iGO is my most preferred GPS software primarily due to the unbeatable visual beauty, speed, ease of use, and most importantly the ability to warn me if I exceed the road's legal speed limit. That has saves me hundreds in traffic fines and risk of license suspension.
Looks like enough reason for me to move to 96dpi, despite the more challenging font size. In a way I love the amount of real estate I have on my today screen.
I'm now officially a 96dpi convert!
Sorry, I'm just so excited about this. The more I use this device, the more "novelty" I get! I'm getting more excited with Athena the more I use it. Learning new things every day! The best toy I've owned in my life, yet so essential, and I feel I can no longer live my life without it. .
I have to test this, but it's extremely poorly distributed in France, alas. I don't even know if it IS distributed in France, actually... :-S
TomTom was my satnav solution of choice since I've been upgrading the same license for the last 5 years, but I'm getting tired of its many shortcomings... :-S
Good to know it works at this resolution, since it's the reason why the Athena rocks imho.

Is speeding fine hefty in France? Do you have some sort of demerit point system where if you exceed the quota in a given period your license is suspeded? Here in Australia, I somehow had managed to attract speeding ticket very often despite trying to be very careful. So I'm very sensitive to this issue. I just had a suspension slapped on me not so long ago. That's why iGO is my preferred GPS. I just let my Copilot's license lapse. I also have Tom Tom which I use less frequently. Tom Tom is okay, except it does not have audio warning for speeding. I understand that one of the versions (which might be on dedicated GPS device) allows users to add and delete roads as well as to enter in the missing speed limit. I don't know if it has audio warning or still only display by color if your exceed speed. Do you know anything about this?
Yes, you can also do that on the Navigator 6 version, either paying a yearly service for radar notification, or for free by adding specifically designed "POI" (Point of interest) including radar positions, that are freely available from websites (as least here in France). But there is no real "warning", so it's not really useful.
In France, we use a separate software called "Vitesse limite" that provides iGo-style warnigs, I guess, but does not have other satnav functionnalities.
Yes, we also have a "point-driver-license", as we call it, here, and stricter and stricter legislation about speeding. And having the satnav solution on the Athena warn me about incoming "boogies" while providing regular satnav functionalities really sounds good, so I guess I'm gonna have to find a way to try it.

The POI fixed speed detection camera is a feature present in almost all GPS software. It is the speed on regular road which is a concern as cops here do surprise us regularly with their mobile radar, which cannot be handled by the POI method.
I think you'll like it after trying it.

How do you get this to work. I have tried this without success. Could you possibly post a copy of your sys.txt.
By the way, as I understand it, the next Igo woll work perfectly in VGA - about time too!

While using the USB mass storage thingy, somehow my device triggered the autorun program in my iGO and did a reinstallation while I was in 96dpi. I think it is the reinstallation while in this mode that fixed it. It was previously installed in 192 dpi. Make sure you're in the portrait mode when you reinstall.
Let me know if this works because I would also like to know why out of a sudden it started working.
Cheers.

Ta - I'll try that tonight.
Glad you got it working eaglesteve.
In the UK most speeding offenses are caught by cameras but the only time I have been caught (so far) was a video camera in a police car, luckily I had just slowed down so was only doing 94MPH - that was 3 years ago and on fast roads I still drive fast but usually in the UK apart fromn the cameras, they don't seem to worry to much if you're driving safely.
What's the betting I get done for speeding now I've said that!
Got it working without having to re-install !
I can provide info on how to do it, depending on the version (modifications change between iGo, iGo Plus and iGo8).
eaglesteve, do you alos have a kind of "flickering of the screen", also, with parts of line that flicker on the screen here and there ?

Yes I get about four flickeing lines that move upward.
Please share with us what you've learned concerning things needed to happen for it to work?
Well, actually, there's quite a lot of things to do and modify in configuration files. I think the best would be that I provide "ready to work" config. files to insert into the data.zip file for the people who need it.
So if you want your iGo to work @ 96 dpi, simply PM me.
I did it for iGo 2006 Plus and iGo8 (the MioMap version).

I am really curious on how can I make my iGO work on 128dpi or 96 dpi

It won'twork in 128dpi.
For me,it seema that all it takes is to install igo in 96 dpi portrait mode.
after reading this thread I retried using igo2006se with real vga and I can load and use in 96 dpi.
it will load but the buttons dont work in 128 dpi
the trick is to have portrait selected in the settigs for igo before changing the screen resolution
The only setting to work in landscape is 196
cheers
I too love iGo 2006 plus, but on the Advantage, the default screen size shows only a small portion of the map that shows on my Wizard.
Meaning th Wizards default view shows me more streets around me. The Advantage seems to be "zoomed" in on its default screen.
Would this process you are speaking of show more of the map on the Advantages default screen?

It should show you as much streets, whether you're on 192 or 96 dpi. The differnce between Athena and the other device is that Athena show it on a larger screen, that's all, if the zooming level, etc are set to be the same. Different device per se should not affect the zooming level, I think.

It would not work in 128 dpi. Only 192 and 96 dpi would it work.
So I'm looking to pick up an "mp3" player. I put that in quotes because I want to be using my music service on it... not just play actual mp3 files. Obviously my phone works great for this but I'm looking for something small that I don't really care about taking out on the trail/river/etc.
Anyway, wondering what the smallest, android based player might be that has some active xda development. I love custom roms on my phone so would enjoy hacking this device as well.
I'm looking for something with wifi... but NOT any cell capabilities - though obviously if it'll function fine without cell service then I don't care if it has them or not.
Right now, I was looking into the Archos 43. It's still kind of big though (4.3" display)... so I was hoping there might be something smaller out there with some active development.
Thanks!!
Not android, but a zune ?
Otherwise, I think Samsung released a wifi-only version of the Galaxy S, seemed pretty rad.

Not going to happen I'd say.
Most PMPs have only one sole purpose. Play Music. A screen smaller than 4 inches means, it'd be useless for anything else other than Music. I'd say go for an iPod that supports iOS apps.
I would buy a cheap android phone, stick cm7 on it and put it in airplane mode, maybe a zte blade (orange sanfransisco in uk) £70 new.

Yea, that'd do as well. But, sometimes, the sound quality of most mobile phones stand up to that of a mp3 player. That should be taken into account as well. As a thumb rule, Motorola phones have good sound quality.
Just search around if you want a phone. You might find even cheaper phones.
Hi, I have been marveling over the SGS2 1080p vid playback and with my new 64gb sdxc card watching video is more of an option, however, while the screen rocks it is not a 52" TV set either. I keep seeing various articles about goggles to be used with TVs etc but of the ones i have been able to find none of them seem like something that could connect to the SGS2. The coolest would of course be something like streaming via bluetooth/wifi from the SGS2 to the goggles but something like HDMI (or USB?) seems more practical? Regardless I haven't been able to find such things yet, something like the itvgoggles (the fancy models are overkill [not looking to pay a mint] but i am not sure if any of them work with android, the ITG-230 seems to work with ipod, any thoughts?) so if anyone is aware of such options a heads up would really be appreciated!
Cheers,
-Gaiko

Hey, Rizur, i just found Vuzix Wrap 920 which seemed promising in terms of at least being able to connect to an android phone but a bit too flawed in feel, aspect ratio, and rez (was also hoping to be able to use this in conjunction with a bluetooth mouse but the rez according to reviews seems to be not quite adequate for that). Will keep looking, but technically it does seem to be what i am looking for (hard to please i suppose )
I bought a Nextway Fast 9 X from spemall.com as shown here:
http://www.spemall.com/Nextway-F9X-...PS-Screen-2G-Ram-1-5GHz-4K-Video-Black_g.html
After fully charging the tablet I started using it and it froze. I then restarted it and its froze a total of 5 times. Its had errors with the launcher, when opening the apps tab all the images would look like the background but pixelated.
Here is a link to the pictures i took: http://s1232.beta.photobucket.com/user/xstingstreetx/library/Defective
Next, I was able to disable some things for the tablet to run properly without crashing. However, this thing score terrible on benchmarks and is VERY slow moving. The processor is actually 1.08Ghz not 1.5.
I was able to root it thanks to Bin4ry see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
Video by Bin4ry see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=7EpkrCq1gfM
I was able to overclock on the stock kernel and such to 1.152 stable.
I was hoping someone could help to develop ROMs, Kernels, etc to make this thing work better.
Any and all ideas or feedback is appreciated.
Things that I didnt notice when I bought it is: I dont believe there is bluetooth or GPS
Also the GPS and blutooth either does not exist or possibly the software in the tablet just doesn't work with it.

so you bought a non-brand cheap chinese tablet and now you want someone to develop a ROM for it ?
edit: wait. that is not that cheap. why on earth would you buy a non-brand tablet with a budget at 200$?

if something sounds to good to be true. it probaly is..
sad to say the chances of someone making a ROM for non-brand products is pretty slim, since most ROM are created on the basis that a device is widely bought and used. Of non-brand phone and tablets there are such a variety that developing for them makes no sense.
Get your money back if you can, and get a branded device. For 200$ you can get a Nexus 7.
if you want the same size and format of the one you got, look around for what samsung, acer, asus, hell even what Point Of View have to offer..
Sorry, but you won't like it -
The main disadvantage of buying a no-brand device is although it may work better the known brands, in case of a fault (software or hardware), you're on your own.... Not many users have flashed/fixed/used this device. So if you brick it, get a bootloop or find a bug, not many can help you.
Not speaking about the variety of ROMs...
I've been there.... I've bought a no-brand phone and after a year it's main PCB failed. I couldn't find a replacement part and had to throw the device away.
Anyway.....
Use the device, enjoy and don't brick it

If the moderators will give me permission, I can give you a link to where there are 4 custom ROMs for this tablet. I have installed the BETA4 and it better utilizes the Retina Display (unless you have bad eyes, and there is one geared for that one as the defective one you are using does). I honestly don't know if your problem can be helped with software, but it might... I can also give you a link to the newest stock ROM and a Windows app to install it. I would rather get permission first to post 2 direct links... one is to Arctablet (and you can do a Google or DuckDuckGo search and find it by the way) and the other one is to a tablet distributor who was good enough to create download links and instructions on how to use the hokey Chinese installer. The question is though, is your problem hardware or a botched ROM?
It does not have Bluetooth or GPS. My Archos outdoes it in that way, but it is a true quad-core retina display and mine works very nicely... nicer now that I have the better use of the resolution available. Its wildly vivid. I honestly can find no real issues other than a few I had from not wiping the thing before I flashed it (oddly it suggested I not do so... which caused me grief w/Google Play eventually). It comes rooted, and if you have one of those that are like partly-rooted or whatever some call it, do a factory reset and it will come back fully rooted. The ROMs of course are all rooted. I have a cheap 10.2", which honestly if I had not had something else would have given me ulcers, but hey... I only paid $14 for it from Quibids (including bid prices), so I can't complain. This one cost me around $150 with a few extras, so a little grief I can handle. But so far... those are interesting words... so far, it is actually very impressive. My daughter has a boyfriend who is an Apple fanatic, and he's kind of fixated on it from certain similarities to what he is coveting these days.
I have it going at 1.2ghz (quad-core), although I have gotten it up to just under the 1.5ghz it claims (1440). It will do it, but I wouldn't bet on its stability. It comes at 1.0 preset from manufacturer, but is easily changed with the cpu app of your choice. I use Setcpu... works for me. It has 2gb ram... can't complain.
I read some arguments on the cameras, but I don't see it... I took some pics tonight of my daughter on her way to a costume party... they are the best thing I have this side of my Kodak. I'm sure it takes better video than the Kodak though. Anyway... its responsive, sharp, and does what I want. You have to buy a Bluetooth dongle for next to nothing to have Bluetooth though for some bizarre reason it shows its there. The one page that I mentioned gives advice along with pics on how to do some interesting mods to it. It is capable of more than they shipped it with. I am sorry that you are having troubles with yours... I don't know if you still have yours or not. I've only had this a few weeks. If you are interested, let me know... and if the moderators allow it, I will post links.
I hate that you have had such grief with yours. If I can help, I am willing.
Hi, I have been looking for a while now for an iPod like android device. (No cell phone service, uses wi-fi and Bluetooth, etc.) But I haven't found anything that jumps out at me. I have seen the Samsung Galaxy Players and they seem to be running very old android versions and are hard to find. I also have thought of a no-contract, cheap android phone but can't find one. Please help me out if you know of anything that could maybe fit my needs! Thanks!

I've heard of old phones with ROM's to make them into music players. Reason you don't see any Android music players is cause Ipods is used by Apple to suck up more money from there hordes of Isheep.

This might not suit you, but you can pick up a HD2 quite cheap now and put tons of ROMs on them. I don't think it runs KitKat without issue, but as long as you can get up to JB (or even ICS) then you should be happy with it (plus you can always play about with several other OSs that run on it, if you so fancy).
