Home screen lag?? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had home screen loading lag before but fixed it by disabling s-voice and after a few days the home screen loading lag (a few seconds) came back. What is making it take so long to load?

I agree, its just as bad as the SG2 for lag. It can be as long as 2 seconds or more to come on.
S-Voice made no difference really for me, which for the record is complete rubbish!
I must admit though, it may be since i rooted it with the CF kernel... I can't recall the issue before, but then I did root it within minutes of powering it on.

I wanted to share this with the forum. I bought the Galaxy S3 as soon as it came out and immediately installed the same apps that I had on the S2. My S2 never lagged and had a brilliant low battery usage, so my dissapiontment was great that the S3 consumed battery like cold beer on a summerday and was lagging up to several seconds between home screens. Finally today after reading this thread I thought of removing my widgets one after one and checking lag each time. Lag could be confirmed with 100% certainty by going to settings>wifi and then going back to home screen and switch. Every single time it would lag up to several seconds. When I uninstalled Palmary weather widget, every single trace og lag was completely gone. I have tested this about 100 times now, restarted the phone several times. The result is, no lag at all without palmary and every single time I add Palmary weather as a widget again, it starts lagging. Maybe it isn´t Palmary for everyone experiencing this problem, but try removing widgets one after one and testing or remove them all and add them one after the other, while testing in between. The only problem I have with the S3 now (stock rom updated and rooted) is the terrible cell standby power consumption. I solved this by only using only gsm for now, but this is not acceptable and I expect Samsung to confirm this problem and fix it, and do it fast. My S2 is a far superior phone as things are now, except from design.
Regards
John

Cell standby isn't using a lot of power, its being calculated incorrectly.
In the stats it should be a draw of 3.4ma but instead someone forgot the . So it thinks its using 34ma.
It isn't
Its only a mistake in stats.
This had been well documented here.

Ok, but nevertheless, it´s eating up the juice way too fast with mobile data enabled. The S2 didn´t do that.

Thanks for the info John. I tried your thought of removing the weather widget but it didn't improve my 1-2sec lag from switching on and off for me. It happents intermittently and I dnt have too many things running anyway. Its strange to say the least.

Use nova and set animation scale to 0.5x
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

But if there are other handsets that don't have lag with the touchwiz, then we shouldn't have to install nova to cure the problem. I already have 0.5 for the animations. I'm pretty sure that its widget/app related but hey. This is what happens in complicated machines.

Agreed, it's just ****ty programing from Samsung

Noticed something else. I had cpu reduction for power saving. Once I cancelled that the lag is gone unless I had multiple apps running in the backround. So that may play some role as well.

This isn't exactly a scientific answer but when I press my home button lightly there is a delay for the screen to come on but if I push it harder the screen comes on right away. True Story

For all those who are wonder why battery life is halfass!

So i flashed stock rom back and..decided to play with screen dim and sleep settings. .its true the battery vamp...must be the screen!
This probably..goes back to any android device.
I set screen timeout to 15 seconds ya it sucks constantly turning screen back on but.it helped alottt.
I gained probably a good 3 hours batt life ans thats with heavy usage seeing as i use the thing all day constantly.

Does changing the screen timeout make a difference if you turn the screen off when you're done using it? I was always under the impression that the screen timeout was there for people who would forget to turn their screen of when they were done.

The big thing also is to strip out the bloatware as well. Can't believe how much bloatware was on the phone or how crappy the default browser is. It's like they are shooting themselves in the foot with sales since noobs would not know how to make the note snappy again.

Could only find this reference to some rumored issues back in Oct. 2011...if you used the webzine feature.
http://www.androidauthority.com/dolphin-browser-hd-possibly-breaching-privacy-28822/
to me...sounds similar to Google's behavior in general.
for some reason, I trust google a little more than a browser developer....
If using dolphin HD, check Settings/About Phone/Battery Usage from time to time. It would stay at the top% on mine (above screen%). I uninstalled after seeing stay that way after a reboot.
I thought I had a bad battery when I first bought the Note. Even bought the dock charger w/extra battery. But for me, it's the 4G LTE.
Now that I'm back at work with it and connect to wifi, most of the day, I can get about 10hrs out of one battery on moderate use.
Try turning off sync when it's not needed, use Screen Filter app, built in task manager to close running apps, connect to wifi when you can. This will help!

I use Opera Mobile (not Mini). Switched the first day when I saw that the stock browser won't save the setting identifying it as a desktop browser - you have to change it every time you reboot. Opera doesn't have that problem.
wow - lots replies. i will try both opera and dolphin.
i thought the stock was based on chrome, i guess not. i don't have ICS yet, so i'll have to wait for chrome beta. the stock wouldn't let me enter credentials for an IIS protected site (work needed), so hopefully this does!
I've been using the lowest brightness setting and gotten better battery life.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
Mirin is my favorite by far closely followed by chrome.

Screening Flickering

Has anyone had any flickering issues with their screens on the GSIII?
I have an ATT version GSIII. Auto brightness is turned off and for the most part the screen seems fine. It comes in nice and bright!
So I was writing a SMS and I notice a very quick screen flicker. It then did it again when I fired up Scramble with friends. It happens every now and then. Could this be a software issue? Anyone got any advice about this? Should I do a hard reset from the phone and set it back to factory? Its annoying at times so I am wondering if I was the only one with this issue.
Thanks for any advice or feed back!
Mine has done that on more than one occasion. Usually in Google Chrome but it has happened in the XDA app as well.
Usually clearing out the multitasking menu makes it stop for me.
Also on an ATT S3

No its only on about half way. I have also reset the phone and it did not seem to fix the issue. Its just annoying. I cant tell if its software (like a bug in the system.) or if it could be a hardware issue. Some others said they have noticed it but I do not find to many posts about it yet.
I have had this issue on my SGS2 since the ICS update. Can you guys tell me if the SGS3 has the same line and blotchy screen issues as the SGS2 does in lower light and darker screen like when playing games or watching movies.

It seems to mostly do it in the stock messaging app. I have changed my app to Go SMS Pro to test this idea. But yes I might be a normal thing. Its just a slight flicker. Its not like the screen shuts off then back on. Just flashes in front of you mostly. With auto brightness on or off.
Mine flashes in the stock messaging app also.

I think it is the stock messaging app that makes the screen flicker. I have changed to GO SMS PRO and no flicker yet. I will keep an eye on it and report back in a few days! Also feel free to chime in!
I always have my phone set to auto brightness, I don't think it ever goes fully bright. The times I've noticed the flickering was indoors in a dim room so I'm sure the brightness was very low.
The flickering appears for a second or so then goes away. Kinda like a tv when the connection is bad, black lines come across the screen and it flickers

Mine flickered today once on Dolphin HD and, oddly, just now while I'm typing this on Tapatalk. What keyboard are you all using? I'm using SwiftKey 3. My brightness is hardly ever on auto; I feel it sets it too high.
You know I never thought about that. I use the SwiftKey 3 also. Maybe thats the issue?
I haven't seen it all night. I switched to GO SMS PRO today. It seems to play nicely to far!
my experience is that it only happens if you're typing. problem I noticed happens if you're using a different keyboard other than the stock one? I was using smarter keyboard and it occasionally flashes. But I switched back to stock keyboard and it seemed to stop flashing for the day I was using it.
For me it only happens when on the tabs page in Chrome.

I don't know about flicker but I was in the middle of a call today with some annoying machine and i had to "press 1 for English" anyway, when I went to type in an actual number my whole screen went black several times while I was in the call...
Anyone else with this problem? Stock, LF9, not even a week old.
Never seen it, but the first thing I did was install GoSMS
My screen flickers from time to time n its quite annoying lol

ATT has none is stock yet. I mean the good news here is its pointing to be a software issue. I like this because otherwise my phone is perfect. I disabled my stock messaging app and I have not seen the flicker sense. But its only been 24 hours. However I will keep you all posted. I still use SwiftKey 3. As I hate the stock keyboard.

Slow wake up

When I lock the screen of my Galaxy S3, then press either the power button or the home button to show the lockscreen, about half the time it takes about 2 seconds to show the screen after button press. I've searched and seen S-Voice caused this problem so I disabled that. I also removed my SD card and rebooted but the same issue still occurs.
Any way to fix this because my HTC One X didn't have this problem...
Thanks.

Power saving mode is already off. I don't particularly want to flash a ROM unless I have to because I've had warranty troubles in the past. Are you certain a ROM would fix it? Which ROM?
And I also tune lock screen off.
Do you install any power save app??

I get this also. Got it on the Stock ROM and ARHD. I have also seen this on my gf's Galaxy Ace, but only when upgraded to GB. On Froyo (Yes, that old version) it turns on instantly. So think it might be a Samsung thing. Not yet tried an AOSP ROM on my S III yet so may give that a go as itching to get some Jelly Bean on it.
Hello! I am new to xda forums and this is my first post
I also have a problem with slow wake up time from sleep after flashing the latest Synergy rom. Any ideas why this lag happens?

Lag is hardware-related looks like. Present on CM10 based ROMs as well. On stock-based disabling S-Voice helps just a little bit when it comes to waking up from Home button...
Killing me as well. :\ What I getting used to is to press Home while pulling phone out - straight away so by the time I get it in position to work with, the screen is either already on or will be on in a 200-500 ms.
Still this is a most frustrating "feature" of SGS3 that will most likely force me to look for replacements once those are available on the market.
The issue is still present even in the latest Paranoid Android ROM.
After tweaking a bit, I found that if you have WiFi enabled, will cause this lag.
Just disable the WiFi and you get instant screen wake up.

This problem annoys me to death too. I've tried many ICS/JB stock ROM and custom ROM (including CM10), but none of them could solve the problem.
I did notice some trend: right after a reboot, the screen turns on fairly quickly. Then after turning on the network (mobile data or wifi) and use facebook or other apps that access network for a few minutes, the delay starts to increase to the usual ~2sec. Looks like some network process might be causing the problem. FYI, My cousin's Note 2 don't seem to have this problem.
Any hacker out there can give some hints or help find out what process might be the culprit?
it's because the phone goes into deep sleep, to prevent this you can download a app that named softlocker. you may get not as good batterytime.

From what I see, I don't believe deep sleep is the problem. My LG P500 (running ICS) goes into deep sleep all the time (per CPU spy et al), and it never has this problem. Seems to me like something else is causing this...

no other brands have this problem. only samsung, thats so strange.
I too suffer from wakeup delay of 1-2 seconds and it's driving me crazy.
After 2 long years I had to live with majestically f**ed up LG Optimus 2X, I finally decided to throw that junk away and get a phone that works as expected, phone performance of which would be equal to it's price (and the price was not something that limited me).
Now I own a phone which even though is snappy and nice and everything, takes ages to wake up. And what pisses me off the most is that Samsung is OK with that, because obviously majority of the customers / owners is OK with that. How is that possible ffs. Low end devices for fraction of that price resume from deep sleep almost immediatelly (in time I don't consider waiting). How's that this is not a big issue ?!
Sorry, I'm just frustrated
EDIT: To add something constructive ... the deep sleep really is the problem here. If the phone doesn't go to deep sleep, wake up to lockscreen is instantaneous (try that by yourselves with SoftLocker app). It's believed that S3 suffers from this issue because of the way the GSM modem is integrated with (or in ? I am not sure) Exynos4 - source.
I just smacked my phone in the table, while in my pocket and now I"m experiencing the same problem. Is this even possible, or I had it before and just didnt notice till now?!

Anyone else having issues with apps randomly restarting, live backgrounds going black, and widgets disapearing for a sec then reloading every time you hit the home button? I run avast for antivirus and anti theft but it keeps shutting down for a few mins then reloading ( or appears to be because it disappears from the app tray and then shows back up a few minutes later) , then I'll be in the middle of a movie on Netflix and boom it restarts the app. Any clue what's going on. Wow.. This is called screen redraw and it is usually something that plagues older devices like the Nexus S that are short on RAM.. Or even newer devices that have so many background instances going the system starts releasing things from memory to free up some RAM for active apps. The homescreen is usually the first to get removed from memory.. Hence, when you go back, it has to "redraw" the homescreen..
For you to get homescreen redraws with the Nexus 10 you have to be running a ludicrous amount of apps all at once.. IMO Avast and Security suites on an Android device are highly unnecessary.

This happens to me on my Nexus 10 after fresh reboots with only going from the browser to the homescreen.
I use my tablet at school so the avast is for the anti theft. looks like it was caused by low mem. Only 100 MBs where avalible restarted going to see if it happens again and what app is having issues. FYI this wasn't the first time I restarted to try and fix the redraw issue.

Home screen redraw happens to me on stock launcher, same as 4.2.1, exiting from browsers. When it happens it is very quick to recover but home screens switching is for a couple of seconds very laggy.
Not a big deal though....
I don't know that it is true, full redraw, as I have the same issue, but the difference between it and normal is redraw is my non widget icons never disappear. From my perspective, it seems that Android 4.2+ has been keen on refreshing widgets every time one goes back to the home screen...where it seems that it simply wants to make sure that it gets the latest data for the widgets. This is anecdotal, of course.

Worst galaxy ever?

On paper this is the best galaxy s ever, we all know that, but I have had this phone for 2 weeks now, and I have had the worst android experience on any phone, I had owned every phone on the galaxy s line since the beginning.
I haven't seen any phone with more lags or software flaws than this one.
To begin, the wakeup lag, sometimes more than 10 secs for the phone to wakeup.
The sd card read/write lag, I change my sd card to a Samsung top notch one, and the lag is still noticeable.
Memory issues, I recreates thisnissues in may ways, open up a game (plants vs zombies 2) play for a couple of mins, lock the phone, and see if you can weke it up.
I noticed a bit more smotthnes after the updatw but still the performance on this phone is just awful.
I hope this is an isolated issue, but I have seen a lot of people complaining about the lag as well.

Yes, it might be a "T-Mobile" version problem, I am pretty sure this are software related problems, I would like to see it running on a vanilla version of android, it has to be TouchWiz messing it up, but anyway, this had to be thoroughly tested before releasing it to the public, shame on T-Mobile/Samsung, hope a fix is on the way.

Try using the international stock roms. On the S4, those were MUCH better that the US version roms. I know it requires rooting, but you'll probably be happier and it doesn't really matter if you're outside your return period anyway.

Great phone, no issues, where did you buy yur phones?
I've had the phone for a while now and it hasn't lagged once, the fingerprint scanner works over 90% of the time, and signal is good as well. Yeah, the HR monitor is a total gimmick, but to say this phone is "the worst galaxy" is a bit extreme.
So either I got extremely lucky and got 2 phones without any problems, or some people are getting unlucky with their purchase.

I have a feeling most of it is a T-mobile problem. However, I have a friend on another carrier (I think it's Verizon) and he hates his as well. Tons of problems.
i got no problem with mine S5, just love it.
I have the mysterious lag screen problem on wake!

Sometimes, no matter what I've tried, I'll be using the phone and let the screen turn off, When I push the home button, nothing, the phone is still running but I can't see anything, I try to use the power button and again nothing, I have to pull the battery and restart the phone to get it working. There is a group of people that are experiencing the problem and at first people thought it may be SD card related but it is not conclusive at this point. It will work fine sometimes for days, then all of a sudden pull the above mentioned crap.
Exactly, onlast Sunday every time I locked the screen it would never wakeup, I had to remove the battery like 3 times, it has been OK for the las 2 days though, but this is frustrating, I mean, I haven't even rooted the phone yet, I read that 4.4.3 is on its way, hope that addresses these performance issues.

Yes I agree this phone is very laggy specially the camera they send me a "new" phone and the problem still there, also i usually charge it at night
and this morning the screen was on the boot screen logo i had to remove the battery it sucks
So, I keep researching the reasons of why some of us have this issues, today I went to the "t-mobile my account" app, went to options and deselected all the options (ALL OF THEM), and I notice the fun is a lot smoother, probably the placebo effect, but I will keep trying for a couple of days, if you guys want give it a try.
No issues here, touch wood, using T-Mobile phone on AT&T network.

I've only had the phone for about a week but it's amazing so far, I upgraded from a S2. I play Ingress constantly and lately I've been able to play for 4+ hours at a time before needing to recharge and that's just on the stock battery. I removed all the bloatware I could and turned most everything off just to try and squeeze out every little bit of battery life. The only thing bugging me about the phone so far is that root would void my warranty and I'm a little upset about that but meh, it's not like I ever needed it I'm just a little worried because the phone is so new. I might just wait until the 12 months is up and root the phone then. So far I don't really have a reason to need root but I'm sure that desire will gain in traction as new tools for the device get released. I'm mostly thinking about mods like Cyagenmod, that will be one of the reasons I root and break Knox if I do before the warranty.
