[Q] Arnova Childpad: some issues I'm not happy with - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
I just bought the Arnova childpad for my kid, it seemed a better toy for my kid then the LighInTheBox 7" pad that I bought. (It isn't that powerfull even after hacking the system)
The childpad is very responsive. Although the screen is not easy to control, scrolling through a list for example, always makes you select the first item when you touch the screen.
I have some issues with the Childpad, could anybody advice:
- In ICS, how can I move apps to the SD card, any software to move doesn't allow that. Nor in the app settings, there's no button Move To SD. Is there a way in ICS
- The Childpad can't access the PLAY store, nor does it let you setup a google account. Could it be fixed?
- How can I move nice game apps from my other tablet to this tablet by SD card. What software is suitable for it?

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions &

I'm in the same boat as you, I bought one for our little guy... Netflix doesn't work properly and no market. I'm trying to root/market it as we speak...
You can sideload the apk for amazon market to get most apps on it, but you can't do much about the issues with the rom without root...
---------- Post added at 09:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:45 PM ----------
Got it rooted using unlockroot 2.3 (Actually I had superuser installed and it never would prompt for root access, I ran unlockroot and suddenly could get root.) Now if I could get netflix going this thing would be ready for action.

I think that's the way they have set it up. Although it must be possible to put a new Android rom on it, I'm sure.
The child market is intresting, but because the screen is so sensitive, it's hard to select from it. Plus it's intresting to get other Play-apps.
Did you find a way to load apps from the SD? I managed with the backup app from my phone to get some apps loaded, but not all.

Seems there aren't many users for this tablet.
Any idea how I could install a new clean Android on it?

No, but I'm wondering the same thing as well. IF CM9 could be easily ported (shouldn't be hard considering it is already running ics) or worst case scenario even CM7 would suffice. I wouldn't mind the rom so much if I could just get netflix, because my son isn't quite as OS critical as I am.

I'm very intrested as well. There's not much A in this Q section here :-D
Maybe we should ask elsewhere?
There must be an easy way to reinstall the system, I'm sure .

I have the same problem. If you have a good idea, I want well to know it

From what I read about the childpad on the Arctablet.com "The ChildPad shares its design with the Arnova 7d G3, the only difference are the colors. While Arnova 7d G3 is just black, the ChildPad is painted in nice-looking white and blue colors" So presumably any thing that comes out for it should, in theory, work on the childpad. I haven't seen much in the way of rom development for it either, but there are some promises of roms coming. I thing we are in one of those spots where it is a waiting game to see if anyone picks up development on either of these devices.

I bought the tablet for my grand daughter. I have installed only a few apps and the tablet is already running out of space. So I am very much interested in learning how to load apps onto the SD card. I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1590807 and was wondering if this could also be apply to a rooted Childpad?

Those with Childpads - could you please help me by letting me know how much storage the device shows - ie either the Internal settings -> storage or when you plug in to a PC and view properties.
My two both show 2gb of total storage - is this correct?
The devices are labelled as 4gb and find it hard to believe that 2gb of the advertised storage is inaccessible to users.
Many thanks

The device is 4 gigs of storage. The 2gb is free. Yes 2gigs is all the preloaded CRAP on the device. There are a bunch of videos as well as audio and preloaded apps.
---------- Post added at 01:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:08 AM ----------
So I got one of these for my 3 year old this last weekend, here's my observations:
- I could not root, everytime I put the device in USB debugging mode it would not detect on my PC.
- Sideloaded google play store. Installed fine, every time I launch it minimizes itself and doesn't load.
- Sideloaded Angry Birds Space and it worked great
- Apps with adult adds....really? Does my son need a dating site add? Planning on installing ad blocker once i can get root.
- Screen is weird. Not as capable as a standard tablet. I have to use my finger nail and/or press really hard.
If anyone finds a more reliable form of rooting the Child Pad please send me the link.
-Magic

Thanks -
The supplied apps and videos etc are (on mine) all in the accessible "Internal storage", ie what you see when you connect to a PC.
When I do a properties I get xMB free of 2.05GB. Therefore if I delete ALL of this supplied content, the maximum storage I am going to get is 2.05GB which is far from the advertised 4GB.
Is this what other people see - 2GB available?

Silly question, maybe I missed it in this thread, but how did you install the google apps on those childpads. I bought 2 of them for my kids and I started installing their gmail account on it. Now it's via the exchange function, but I rather like to use the official gmail app. Also gtalk would be handy as they now use gtalk on the PC to talk to me when I'm working in the office.

Simply download the .apk from the web. However, these apps do not function as they are locked out in this version of ICS. Currently there is a custom ROM in the works with root and play store enabled.

this is probably what you are looking for

thx

Thx, worked perfect !!! Anyone an idea how to move the apps to the SD, since there is only 400Mb available for the apps, it's almost filled by now with some regular games...

you people who fell victim to this bad device like me might want to check out

thats the best firmware currently it runs really fast and without problems except for one gamebreaking bug sadly.
the screen is mirrored after flash meaning its unusable but they are working on it and it should be fixed soon
(if anyone has a tip on how to get into the screen calibration thing in 4.1 android , or force it to do the calibration at next startup please help)

https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/android-x86/uNo7a39-s3I
The mirrored screen problem also happened with other devices and this is kernel based.
The link above is a dirty trick to fix the issue. But it requires a recompile of the kernel.
Exelletor on the Arctablet forum told me that recompilong this rk29xx based kernel waa not that easy.
I had a look to the info provided and i could more or less pinpoint the things that needed to be changed, but currently I did not find the time to perform the compile.
Hope this can already help?

[App] SwitchMe needs some Prime testers

Hi everyone. Im one of the developers of SwitchMe, and app that allows multiple secure logins into separate installations of android on a single device. The pr is after the break.
I really need a few people to check into some issues people on the original galaxy s have been experiencing. There are some warnings involved:
- testers must perform a full nandroid backup before using the app, it is not our responsibility if you start getting boot loops
- if you report results or bugs, please use the "Write to us" function in the app whenever possible, and always describe the issue in the header of the logs you send
- if you post here, bes sure to include your device type and rom
- if you have apps installed on sd, be sure to mention that as well
--------------------------------------------------------------------
SwitchMe is a unique application for root users that allows you to log in and out of multiple installations of Android just as you would on a desktop computer.
The technology behind SwitchMe saves all of your applications and data, protects it and stores it as a file in memory. You can then log out of an
account and log into a fresh installation of Android or another account with its own unique content.
You may create as many profiles as the memory is capable of holding. Some of these may require very little free memory because they contain few apps,
others will be larger as they contain many applications and lots of cache and data.
Why is this functionality useful?
Privacy - the most obvious benefit is that you can securely share one device among multiple users, which gives you privacy and peace of mind.
Testing - if you are a developer, you can use profiles as clean sandboxes to test your applications and their interaction with the system.
Gaming – with multiple installations of Android on a single device, you can now play online MMOs as different characters.
Speed - the games your kids play slow down your tablet, but with SwitchMe you can easily create profiles without games or instant messengers.
Battery life - when the battery is low but there are important emails or documents to edit later, switch to a profile which only contains these essentials.
These of course are only suggestions - there are plenty of other uses for the functionality SwitchMe offers.
Market link:
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.switchme
The Lite version allows the creation of two profiles, enough to test on.
Screens:
You had me all the way up to "testers must perform a full nandroid backup before using the app, it is not our responsibility if you start getting boot loops". That's when you lost me.
Hi,
I'm using the app for some days. First version works fine but I was not able to generate a cloned profile, the new profile was always empty. Next version was able to generate cloned profiles, but after installation of the update I was stucked in my second profile because the switch button don't work any longer. Todays update fixed these error.
I have a Prime 32 GB with dock, ICS 4.0.3 and I love this app. Now I can share my tablet with my wive without having trouble with emails and highscores.

Yeah we can't make nandroid backups just yet
ill test as soon as we can run full backups, hopefully in the next month or so
I have this running without any issue on ICS. Fast switching appears to work fine too. Great application.
I am a little nervous not having nandroid backup!
Here's the link to the post for the application! I Enjoy

I have been running for 3 days with no issues, AND without the nandroid backup. So far no issues and it works a treat.
Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions or want me to test something.

Sorry guys, i spent my cash on a 7.7 instead so there isnt a Prime in the office yet and i wasnt aware that you had no fully working recovery.
In any case, Titanium and the stock recovery should be just fine in terms of fixing the device if you have any issues!
No issues here for 3 days.
I get the pro version
Let me know if you have any issues please!
Just finished my backup with titanium, I just hope you are right with the stock recovery in case of problem! I will post comment soon!

Recovery is recovery. This app will not affect it...
Good news
I just bought the app, because this is a feature requested in android since a long time and I think this is a really good start and I want you to still improve the app! Like switching without reboot or have a lockscreen with the possibility to switch profile
It's just bad that the average people can't use it because it require root, but I understand you have to follow Android limitation... Anyway, you did a good job!
Here's my test so far:
Clone current profile => Woking ( takes a while but I had a lot of apps )
Create new profile => Working
Fast Switching => Working
Problems or questions:
- Bubbleator "live wallpaper" seems to crash after a "profile switch" but to be honest it can crash by itself easy... lol
- Is it normal I can Access pictures/video folders of other profile ? ( if it is, that could be great to have an option to "lock" a folder so only the "owner" will be able to access the files )
- The "Asus" apps installed by default like SuperNote or mylibrary (ebook reader) seems to have access to notes or books stored in other profile ( again maybe this is normal )
I don't understand how the space usage is displayed..In one of my new blank profile there's 53.29mb available for apps same for data and same for Dalvik and it's filled at 84%. In another new blank account it's 246.54mb available for every categories.. So why the space allocated to each profile is different and when/how this is determined ? Is it fixed ?
That's pretty it, thanks for this good work! And thanks in advance for your answer!
Is there anything else to test ?
Problems with games
Hello,
I haven't try games in my previous test. After few profile switchover I can't play all fullscreen games.
I got problems with:
Tinytower (not tablet optimised), Zen pinball, Shine runner, they all crash at sometimes during the loading, 2-3 seconds after the program start or during game play. I can't say if it's the game itself having problem, but I can tell you tinytower as never crashed on my device before and I have played Zen pinball 2-3 times and it was ok.
Example of game that still work: mx moto, Angry Birds, Tank Riders, Air Attack HD, SiegeCraft THD. So far I haven't got any problems with normal apps other than games...
Most of the games seems to run ok... I don't understand why few of them are crashing.
Does SwitchMe will use more "ram" for other profile or it just don't have a footprint at all once you switch and "reboot" ?
Fullscreen games? Maybe you have them on the SD in some broken ways? For me every game works just fine.
Galaxy Tab 8.9, KANG
Yeah forget about the fullscreen.. lol it's just my bad english. I tried to reboot the device and the games worked again. It appear to happend when I do several consecutive profile switch. I will try to reproduce tonight and let you know if this happen again. The games wasn't on the sd because I have no "external storage" on my tablet.
I have been using the paid SwitchMe for a week or so now and have 3 profiles. One for my wife and me along with a "guest" account, so far its been great, I would, however, like to have an icon or section that would show the memory taken per user. That would be killer for me to see it visually at a glance like that.
My one question with the app as is I get toast notifications granting the app superuser access from time to time long after booting. It's the only app I have that does that. Not a problem at all, just curious about it.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
Works great here
Hello,
Succesfully rooted and created 3 profiles with switchme.
Everything works smoothly, from clone to fresh profile.
Fast switching works great, no problem so far...
One question though: I though there was a widget to switch profile... I need to go to the app (through notification's bar shortcut) to switch profile. Anything like that planned?

[NEW] NT CM7 support thread

Now that we've released CM7 again for the NT I thought I'd best start up a proper support thread. Pleas keep it as back reports and help.
Please use this thread to post feedback and to ask questions. The Dev thread is for exactly that, development and not support! Please keep the development thread clear of support and feedback posts.
Live support may be available on irc.freenode.net irc channel #nook-tablet-chat, if any of us are around we'll be happy to help but don't bug people if they are busy please. A web version of irc is available here http://webchat.freenode.net?channels=nook-tablet-chat
When posting a bug or issue please use the following format
Which install are you using (Internal or SD):
What version is your CM7 download that you are using (should be alpha final now):
Do you have any mods on your NT (updates or system modifications)
If yes to above what have you installed
Where is this bug (main system or which application):
Can this bug be easily replicated:
If yes to above how can we replicate it to check:
Description of the bug
Any other information we may find useful
Know bugs for Internal version will be in post #2
Known Bugs for SD version will be in post #3
I'm awaiting a Mod cleanup of this thread and all previous bugs up until the new release will be removed from this thread, should knock it back down to about 2 or 3 pages and give me the 2nd and 3rd posts I mention above.
Bugs / Issues from the internal version
Market will not work properly after the update unless you install the GApps (follow link in Dev thread)
Wifi sometimes does no reconnect after sleep, simply tap on the status bar to get notification up and toggle wifi off / on and it should reconnect.
There is currently no Reboot to Recovery option in the power menu, you can do this instead by going to rom manager (make sure it's updated via Market / Play)
Mounts aren't working properly due to a typo on 2 lines in build.prop. update zip to be flashed via CWM available HERE
There is still a possible issue with formatting. A member has said that asking the software to format the /media partition totally wiped his entire device completely removing the partition table creating a paperweight. As has been mentioned many times in both thread about CM7, if any formatting needs to be done please do it from a computer and if in the case of the Media partition that's not possible just delete files instead of formatting. Due to the risk involved we have not yet attempted to recreate this issue on our own devices!

Just reading the official B&N FAQ for the nook tablet, it indicates "Do NOT turn off your NOOK while it is charging; just allow it to go into sleep mode automatically".
I'd been turning it off to charge also, I think i'll follow their directions and see if it charges faster.
The question i'm quoting is: "How long does it take to fully charge my NOOK?" In the "hardware" category.

Thanks for the link. I'll try to charge it without turning the nook off. if it does charge faster, the question would be, "is there any way for it to charge quickly while off?"
On a side note,I did wonder why the nook would always boot up when I plug in the charger after the nook powered down from low battery.
Thank you sir
Just a quick thanks to Celtic & the rest of the people working on the Nook Tablet... thanks!!! Btw, on one of your forum thread pictures I've noted that your screen is quite smudgy. If you need a screen protector for your nook or any of your newer 8 GB models, let me know, at your service.
And as a side note, I've got absolutely no issues w/ your Alpha CM7 release. No wifi issues, nada. Perhaps this is because my wifi network is password less and only authentication method is via wireless mac filter. Only thing if anything is that sometimes (seldomly) when I swap SD Cards while it's powered on, the device will display the Cyanogen 7 boot animation while booted. A quick rotation from portrait to landscape mode fixes this and allows you to press the home button and "home on out" of this.
*** Btw, if you need a screen protector for any of your nooks, w/o hesitation let me know!! Thanks!

Celtic, I have been thinking, now that you have a new version up, (By the way, you rock) are you going to start a new support thread? This one is VERY long and a little bit daunting, and I am sure that the new rom will bring with it new bugs. This one is almost excessively about video playback and wifi, and the new rom (As I understand) fixes both.
Who would have thought that casually asking if CM7 would be easier and less time consuming could have led to this well polished and very impressive result?

hi guys, just wanted to say about 2 issues that i saw on my NT.
1. The sleep issue - I've saw that was already posted about 5 pages ago, just wanted to tell i got it too ... after closing the NT the second day could not start it up... had to long press power button a couple of times (didn't knew about shortcut PWR + N button)
2. somehow related to the first one. While playing music, after approx 15 min the sounds stops . I've pressed the Pwr on NT and the playlist is on screen and a song appear to be playing but no sound. I've tried to go to running applications too force kill the app but a get a error message about Force/wait/ ... After that I tried to restart with long press and selected restart/shutdown but it doesn't do anything , again had to long press to shut it down.
Hope this helps, i could try to get some logs if that helps.
Thanks.

Well I finally had to downgrade to v2.6 before it would work correctly. It's not as feature-rich as the latest version, but it does work now.
Just noticed something...doesn't the first post normally have a link to the software being discussed?
I have been running your first release since its inception, and it has IMO, ran fantastic compared to the first release of CM7 for the old Nook Color at this current point. That NC unit and its early CM7 was a great way to learn to troubleshoot bootloops and SOD's!
Anyway, I downloaded your updated CM7 Alpha 12 straight to the tablet and installed. I wanted to try install with only a cache and dalvik wipe first. This went surprisingly well and has been running smooth for several hours now. So far so good!
The first glitch I had on install was the old Market and updated Google play seemed to fight each other with their update. Once the browser was up, I downloaded the new Google Play apk and installed overwritting the old Market directly. Then it took well. After a reboot, all apps were restored using Titanium Backup, and another reboot. I did have one point where I had to pop the SD and reinsert as expected but no prob there.
I want to thank you and all other Team B Devs for this great work. Donation inbound!

Good point!
This thread will be almost completely wiped soon when the new internal verison is released, its' getting rather long now and people don't read when it's only a few pages so with 65 pages theres no chance!
When the thread is cleared I'll add in links to the software at the begining too. I'll also be requesting that people post in a set manor. Something like
CM7 build download number (e.g. alpha 12)
Device version (8gb or 16gb)
Install type (sd or internal)
How long have you been running the build?
Short description of bug:
Have you had this bug more than once ?
Can this bug be reproduced on demand, if so how?
Hopefully that will make things easier for everyone ! Although I fully expect many people won't do it like that because they won't have even bothered reading the read to know to do it!
Celtic, do you still plan to release an SD card version also?

Just Flashed Rom
Ok, so this was a bit daunting for me. I've rooted my EVO several times, with several roms and had little difficulty. The NT, however was an horse of a different color.
I first used Nook and Zergy a month or so ago. Never got it working good, but good enough (better than stock B&N)
Then I tried using CMW_SD_flash_and_exe. After much frustration yesterday, I finally figured out that the NT won't boot from the SD card unless the power cable is plugged in. I could finally get into a boot loader program, but kept getting installation aborted when trying to install the ZIP. The CM7_NT_Alpha12_Public1.zip was too big once I made my SD card a boot loader, so I ended up copying this Zip to the tablet's internal memory and installing from there.
I don't know if i'm truly "rooted" in the sense that I can now boot the nook into recovery mode any time, or if I will need to use the SD card to load new ROMs.
My phone is working such that I can reboot into recovery mode any time I want without an SD card. Not sure how I would do that with the NT, or if I'm comparing apples to oranges as it were.
Anyway, all seems to be working, I wiped cache/dalvik cache/data and rebooted. CM7 seems to have loaded, I put in my google account and it's off to the races. After sharing my phones WiFi (thanks to being rooted) my NT is now dl all my installed apps. I think I upgraded to Play from Market so for now I think all is well! Sorry for the long post, but wanted to share my defeats and my success!

Get Indirects CWM App. It will perm install CWM so you can get to it by holding down Power + N (without need for SDcard).

You need to flash CWM internally if you want to be able to get to recovery like you do with your phone.
Check out indirects app

OK, sorry about that. I have just been reading THIS thread as I am not a developer, so had missed it. Did not even see it mentioned in here! Largest apologies.

My Rooted 8GB Nook Journey and Kudos to jichauan89.

Here are my thoughts on the Nook Tablet and my rooting process. I try to write to be as friendly as possible for the newbies to rooting devices. This is really just a reflection of my experience with the device and my rooting effort thus far .
If money is no issue, by all means go with the 16GB. But if you really want the best bang for the buck, go with the new 8GB version over the 16. The main difference is the RAM but since we are not talking about a true multitasking device, the extra RAM does little. Even if you root and hack and upgrade and tweak the hell out of it, you'll never really do more than one thing at a time on the device itself so 512MB is usually plenty. I have found that the Nook is the perfect companion device (for references and reading) to go with my netbook (which is the pefect portable productivity device) and my rooted android cell (universal connectivity device with tether hack). Those three things working in tandum mean that I can get online anytime, anywhere, and work comfortably. Now, if I can just find an Android phone that has a battery that lasts for more than 4 hours with the wi-fi/tethering/mobile hostpot turned on.
I have successfully used jichauan89's Root for Nook Tablet 8GB (w/ Android Market) root method number 1 (the SD image). Thank you jichauan89! It was easy and worked great the first time. His procedure...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529553
Here was my specific procedure and thoughts.
Prior to the attempt. Make sure that the device has plenty of battery power or is plugged in the wall adapter. This is a good practice for all rooting/hacking attempts on these types of devices, including cell phones and media players. I backed up the data on my SD card by simply copying all the files to a folder on my netbook's desktop.
Used Sandisk 8GB microSDHC card I had in my old Samsung Captivate. I used the SC card adapter it came with orginally to insert it into the built in SD Card reader in my Windows XP netbook.
Downloaded the SD card image from exactly where jichauan89 described.
Used Win32DiskImage.exe to format and write the image to the SD card. Worked without error. I used the safely remove hardware option in Windows to disconnect the hardware before removing the card from the reader.
Powered off the Nook Tablet 8GB.
Inserted the freshly formatted and imaged SD card into the Nook.
Held the power in until it powered on.
Saw a cardboard box. It reminded me of Amazon's frustration-free packaging.
Waited.
Saw the "Read Forever" Nook logo.
Waited exactly 3 minutes.
Held the power button in until the powered off.
Removed the SD card and set it aside. It's mission is complete.
Held the power button in until it powered on.
Routine booting began.
Upon boot completion, I clicked the n button and selected "search". I searched for "market". It found the Android Market. Don't look for "play". The hack itself uses an old version of the market that will upgrade itself to Google Play after you run it (as long as you are connected to WiFi).
At this point, your device is rooted successfully. Anything else you do is really just gravy. I suggest doing the NT Hidden Settings to allow sideloading and I also suggesting doing the hack to stop updates so that you get to keep all your hard (not really) rooting working in tact if and when B&N rolls out 1.4.3 of the Nook's firmware. Here are the additional steps that I took, again, this is all thanks to jichauan89's simple instructions and the feedback given in his thread. Also note, when I did have issues, I kept reading the thread rather than jumping the gun and posting my own questions. All the answers were already there...
I installed NT Hidden Settings from the market.
I immediately used the hack to allow 3rd party apps. There was some confusion and error here. I ran it a few times and it didn't appear to do anything, but then I pressed the n button once and a super user screen appeared asking me to give NT Hidden Settings rights, which I allowed. I tried the 3rd party hack a few more times to no avail. I rebooted the device and tried and tried and it wasn't working and the check mark on the previous screen for allowing Uknown Sources simply seemed to uncheck itself. I was watching the new episode of South Park on TV and at one point I reran the hack for about the 300th time it felt, a message came up that the app had been given SU rights, and I moved my attention to South Park for several minutes. When my eyes came back to the Nook, I checked the Unknown sources setting again, and it was checked, all by itslef. Lesson, I believe that the 3rd party app hack takes a few minutes to actually do anything after it is granted SU rights but doesn't give any notification that it is successful (or I missed it while grandma was trying to make Butters eat a urinal cake). I believe the app checks the Unknown Sources box itself as a part of its script and all the other times I had run the hack, I was just being impatient. After several reboots, the check now stays.
I then ran the NT Hidden Settings hack to keep updates from being installed. I was notified almost immediately that the installation was successful.
I then installed Go Launcher and HomeCatcher. I got Homecatcher from an XDA forum post and not from the Android Market. After running HomeCatcher, I clicked the n button and selected home and I was prompted to choose between a little andorid guy and the stock nook launcher. I made sure that put a check in the box to make this decision default (which i kind of wish i didn't, but it should be easily undone) and then selected the Andorid icon. Now whenever I select home, it goes to the Go Launcher app, awesome.
I also immediately installed File Expert and Titanium Backup and everything seems to work perfectly.
I then installed the Amazon App Market from Amazon.com in the Nook's stock browser. Every app from their seems to fail and says "SD card required" or some such thing. I am assuming that if I put the SD card back in everthing would work fine, but I'm not sure why this is an issue. Shouldn't it be able to use the Nook Tablet's internal memory? I'll keep testing.
The only thing I'm thinking about now is that I want to find the fastest way to switch back and forth between the stock B&N launcher and Go Launcher. I like B&N's ecosystem, even though it is limited, but I enjoy the advantages I get from walking in the store and getting to read books and even though the user interface of their digital store is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen, I find myself wanting to us it because I support Barnes & Noble a lot and wish them the best. I do, however, wish they would listen to all of us who are *****ing about their Market's limitations and ridiculous pricing and either treat the device more like a tablet like the name implies. But I'm preaching to the choir, right?
Try installing adw launcher, it should break the default status of go launcher, I'm not positive if there is a way to disable it other than that.
Sent from my Nook Tablet using XDA
You can actually go into the application settings and clear the cache and clear the defaults for HomeCatcher and then do a force stop. Run it again in the app drawer and the next time you click the n button it will ask wich launcher to run again. I made sure I didn't select the default action checkbox this time. Now everytime i hit n, it asks which launcher I want to use. I like it! Quick access to my wonderful root stuff and just as quick access to to an (essentially) stock Nook environment.
I have read it and did not find anything about pre-requisites. So am I totally safe doing this from a stock 8gb 1.4.2 nook tablet with no prior mods installed?
I understand the risks involved of course.

If you're just looking to root, then yes, use the method linked in this thread.
The "N" button
I rooted mine and everything worked fine.
I installed Button Savior and use that when I wanna be in Android tablet mode for going to the home screen and I just leave the Barnes & Noble 'n' as it is so when I press it I can go straight to the B&N look. It's pretty easy.
But this thread has been a great help to me.
Thanks
I followed a very similar procedure and everything worked great the first time, thanks to this board!
Thanks
I wanted to throw a thanks out to you as well.
I read your post as well as jichuan's post before I even tried anything.
The only issue I have had is the "unknown sources" not staying checked.
Like you, I tried and tried to get it to stick, finally looked away for a bit, and poof! Magically it's checked. Maybe patience is indeed a virtue! However, I can not for the life of me get HomeCatcher to install. I am rooted obviously as I was able to download NT Hidden Settings from the Play store. Any ideas, or did I overlook something?
I had a lot of problems with unknown sources but it just happened all by itself
1.4.3
Doesn't seem to be working with 1.4.3. I installed NT Hidden settings and some apps from the play store but they are nowhere to be seen.
THANK YOU!!!!!
Thank you!!! I did this to my NOOK Table and it's working fine!! Thanks!!
issue
I'm hoping someone can help me.
I rooted my NT last week (using these tips and tricks) and installed a bunch of stuff on it. And just today I installed the BEATS AUDIO on it and it asked me to reset the device... upon resetting it, it started up like a stock NT and I had to re-register it. Does that mean my device is no longer rooted?
I have an SD card on there and I did a backup using Titanium, but I'm not able to access the apps or get to NT Hidden Settings to download anything. When I navigate the web to the play store I'm able to see that it recognizes some of the apps as installed, but I cannot even download an apk or get anything to download through the play store even though it says a download will begin soon. Also, in the SEARCH option I do not get an option to choose where to search, it's just a general nook search.
I hope this is enough information. I want to try to re-root it but am afraid I might brick it.
PLEASE HELP!
Was your NT running 1.4.2? If so check to see if it's now on 1.4.3 in which case you had an OTA update which un-rooted your tablet.

still on 1.4.2.
I guess somehow it reset itself and I lost the root. I had to reroot it and use titanium to get most of my files back. So glad I had set up a backup right before I downloaded the app. I ended up deleting the beats installer and just installed Volume+.
I'm still not sure what went wrong.

Archos 70IT keeps freezing

Hello,
It has been a while since I bought my archos 70IT and since the beginning, it kept freezing a lot, I had to kill all the apps every 2 minutes...
So I didn't really use it but now I want to use it again. I have installed Urukdroid because I thought maybe I could solve this problem by lowing the memory level where the device kills the apps... But know, the problem appears even more often than before... I don't know what to do... Sometimes it freezes when I use the menu, or when I'm on Google Play or when I use some apps, I don't think there is a specific trigger, only the memory. It is the 250MB hard drive model.
The screens stops and I can't do anything but reset the device.
Can anyone help me?
Thank you.
Please do yourself a favor and read the UrukDroid threads.
It is clearly stated that UD isn't really suited for the hd versions of the tablet, as it is installed on the HD, not the internal sd, wich means everytime the hd powers down the os is stalled, or the hd can't power down.
The only thing you can try is the orginal fw.
Wich Apps did you install?
I installed the market with arctools but the device froze even before it.
I also remember the device freezing when I transefered some media with the USB connection, before I installed UD.
If I shouldn't use UD, what is the best way to be root then? I mean, on a HD device.
Thanks!
The only chance you have might be http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=930197
Check there if it is working with the A70H.
I don't even have my A70S anymore to check it ( moved to Ainol Novo 7 Elf II ).
P.S.:
Is there always a trafficjam on saturday afternoon around toulouse?
Drove by last saturday and it was bad ( not as bad as lyon though , but...)
Thanks but I think I will stay not rooted and without installing google play and google apps. It's not as good as it could but it seems to work better...
By the way, does anyone know a good calendar app available on appslib? To import calendars by url.
PS: Yeah, the Toulouse traffic is really bad! That's the main drawback of this city I think...

[Q] Onda v919 G3

This iPad Air 2 clone from Onda: http://www.onda-tablet.com/onda-v91...reen-ram-2gb-octa-core-3g-android-tablet.html
Looks rather nice, (and very cheap) for what it is, the question is does anyone have one, and what's the battery life like?
I'm currently running an old (original) Nexus 7 Running 5.02 lollipop. It's usable. But having just bought my mother a ASUS HD7 (also an Intel build) http://www.theverge.com/2014/12/12/7377323/best-cheap-tablet-you-can-buy and seen how it performs in comparison I think it's time for an upgrade.
This: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2776829 seems to be how to root one, but I'm more interested in build quality and feel
So does anyone have one?
NOTE: These are INTEL ROMS for Baytrail, etc. https://01.org/android-ia/downloads

Hi, got one on order - delivery next week, I hope, according to the email received today. I ordered the Android Only version - the dual boot Android / Win 8 was quite a bit more and I already have a MS Win 8 tablet which I dont like so didn't need the pain Also it was USD40 cheaper, so spent themoney on a memory card.
I also have an iPad Air Mini, so it will be interesting to compare to see if the Onda can match an iPad - not quite a direct comparison, but will be interesting.

Jeff
Jeff, tell us how the tablet is. what are the features like? how is the dual boot? etc....
Sorry for delay - I didn't get an email note to say a reply had been posted!
Anyway, I bought the Android version as I have a Win 8 tablet and hate it.
As usual for a Chinese item, it was configured for English (US) and has a selection of rather "unusual" programs and apps loaded as standard. Most are in-built into the ROM and cannot be deleted.
It is, basically, a large Android Phone running 4.4.2. It has a well configured 16Gb internal USB drive of which approx 12Gb is free to load apps. I have put a 64Gb TF card in and it is recognised and formatted automatically. It has a Micro SIM slot but my WorldSIM card is not recognised as it does not pull-in the SIM tools from the SIM card so cannot find a signal. I will buy a PAYG SIM from Tesco when I next go there.
It proved impossible to root the ROM using all of the APK or USB type methods - 4.4.2 is known to be extremely difficult and 4.4.3 almost impossible (I have read). I saw an add on the web for a USD39.95 root or your money back. Nothing ventured, Nothing gained, so I clicked on the link. A chat box opened and I discussed the issue (Chinese tablet / 4.4.2 etc.) and the techy guy said it was 50/50. He did confirm that if it didn't work there would be no damage and a full refund; if it did work, then that's good. I paid by PayPal and as soon as it went through, I got an invite to allow remote access. The tech guy downloaded iRoot (which has already failed for me) as well as a small toolkit. He ran a DOS promt and got the phone to be recognised - this is the secret that made it work; a standard USB/Phone driver is not working well with 4.4.2.
Once the phone saw the USB connection, he ran iRoot and after 5 minutes and a few reboots, it was rooted. He then tidied up the PC by deleting the files he had downloaded.
On the tablet, I now had a rooted ROM and a selection of new Chinese icons (SuperCLeaner / SuperUser and a few "extras"). Being untrustworthy, I wanted to replace those a.s.a.p. but being careful not to disturb anything that might un-root me. I went to bed, it was 11:30 and I didn't want to make any mistakes.
This morning, I researched what was available. First install was BUSYBOX FREE which I have always read is a util you should install. Next was SuperSU which is the utility that is normally part of a "Western" root process. As it loaded, it complained that there was already a SuperUser App installed (the Chinese one) so I ticked the box to say "replace it" and kept my fingers crossed. All went OK, rebooted and I now had SuperSU up and running. Next app to look at was the Chinese SuperCleaner which kept popping up saying it was cleaning up the cache etc. Made me suspicious. So, first thing was to get rid of it. It was a simple drag and uninstall.
I was still left with a lot of icons of unknown use (Chinese Characters / Chinese Browser / Chinese email app etc etc) that were part of the ROM and couldn't be deleted.
Next App load : Root App Deleter - says it all. I ran it in "Junior" mode (so no irrepairable damage can be done) and "disabled" everything I culd recognise - this removes the icon from the desktop, but does not delete the App. I will wait a few days and if nothing falls over, I will go back and run as "Professional" which allows permanent (and irreplaceable) deletion.
Next App : Root Explorer which, like a file explorer, lets you look everywhere.
Next App : Titanium Backup - allows you to backup to SD card or elsewhere Apps, setting etc.
Logged into Google / Playstore, clicked "My Apps" and started downloading all of teh Android Apps I wanted to replicate on the tablet (TV, Radio, AllCast, Netflix . . . etc)
There are a few very important apps which are involved with the Root, so Icreated a Root folder and moved all of the icons into it. ALso there were a few Chinese icons that I could not get ris of, so they went in the folder as well. I then moved it to the last desktop well out of the way - out of sight, out of mind
Interestingly, it looks like the full phone hardware is built in as well - along with SMS messaging app there is a phone dialler. I *#06# on the keypad and got an IMEI response and there is a phone onhook/offhook ability, so I assume there is a workin phone. Without a SIM, I cant try it (yet).
Downside : the wireless receiver is a little deaf - my iPad gets a 90% signal almost everywhere int he hosue, this droped the signal upstairs and gives a 75% signal strength within sight of the wireless router. This is a common complaint with Chinese phones and tablets.
So, for less than £100, you get a 9.7" iPad looking tablet, running Android 4.4.2 - not bad at all.
Quick update - PAYG 3G sim works fine- it is a phone as well, works perfectly but a bit large to hold to the ear - so a phone headset is best.
