[Q] Help: files to apk - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I would appreciate any help:
I have an app that accesses a special web page (about 300 MB). To the volume of data the user not to pull too hard, I would like to grab the latest version of the page in an app (an app in addition to the main application), since the transfer of individual files takes too long.
Can someone give me maybe tips on how I can do that, or perhaps there is a finished manual?
Thanks and Best regards
Dr.Scott

If you are going to sign up for a new account with drop box, please do so through a referral link someone else posts. This will allow others to build larger drive space without paying for it. Those attaching referral links to this post, please remove your link once you have maxed out your free referral account expansion at 8GB.
My referral link: http://db.tt/gkcqDGa
(i just need a few more people and I will be maxed out.)
(in order for someone to get credit for your referral, you have to setup a new account, download the program to a new pc and register it. This is FREE for the first 2GB and up to an additional 8GB with referrals (10GB total). You get 250mb for each referral.)
Drop box creates a folder on your pc that automatically synchronizes with a virtual drive on Dropbox cloud server. Then this server file makes itself accessible through any location you log into the dropbox website or any mobile device that you have the app installed on. This is a very easy way to keep files ready on a cloud server or sideload apps. You can also store roms, backups from titanium backup and much more on this "virtual thumbdrive" type server. Another feature is sharing your account with friends. This allows your shared files to be accessed by anyone you specify. You can also make it to where they can now add or remove files from the shared folder. I personally use a folder to share family photos with my extended family. This way they can easily log in and download the images or they will automatically sync with their pc.
Thanks Albert, great idea, and great videos!

I have a question regarding installing an application from Dropbox. When you open Drobox on your NT, do you just double tap the apk file from Dropbox or do you have to actually move the file onto the NT and then open it?

I can't speak for the NT, as mine is still on its way, but on the NC, if I hold the selection I get the option to "open" the .apk. That then initiates the installer.
You do have the option to download, though, if you want to.

clicking the file will prompt you to open, or download. Requires an SD card
Dropbox is indispensable. If you don't already have it, here's my referral: http://db.tt/iYbt0DD
What a great idea! I still have a lot of referrals before I max out... any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
I definitely could not agree more.
Dropbox helps you sync your most important files to any computer/smartphone/tablet in the world. It truly is phenomenal. Dropbox can be used in combination with Titanium Backup to backup all of your apps to the cloud. You can access dropbox from your web browser. You can share folders with others (I personally find this the most helpful, I use it for classes constantly)

Ok I use dropbox for apps and I use Minus for everything else as I get 10gb free with Minus compared to the 2gb you get with dropbox and this is without referrals.

2 qns please - Dropbox and Apps

So then:
New to the Prime, like it so far, not in love with it, but it's pretty good.
2 qns please:
a) I have a desire HD and like the apps you can put on the screen under ICS, but don't know how to do it on this one, e.g. a twitter feed etc. Is it possible to do? It is a right click and hold down on my phone!
b) I have dropbox and was hoping there was some way of syncing files from my computer to a part of my SD card - just work files, so I can leave my work laptop and move onto this. Is there a sensible solution to this?
Am hoping both of these are solvable, please put me out of my misery!
Thanks
A) Ice Cream Sandwich changed the way you add widgets to your homescreens. Instead of long-pressing on the home screen, they're in their own section in the app list. Bring up the app list and you'll see a section for widgets at the top that you can scroll through.
Are you asking if dropbox works? Yes it does.
B) put your files in dropbox.... done works perfect
if you favorite something on your TFP's dropbox app, it has it always downloaded. Not sure how often or if at all it downloads the latest version, but that's waht the features says it does. Also, if you won't have internet, tap an item once to download it to your dropbox cache and after that it'll be saved on your prime so you wont need internet to access those specific files from your device.
ps i'm rocking the same TFP/DHD combo and i'm loving it

I have dropbox working (the app), but am wondering if there's a "deeper" setting more akin to the PC where I can sync and monitor folders rather than be able to passively log in and select which file I want to download/view?
I work in education and as such have about 5 gig of work files I could do with on my computer, mainly lesson plans, resources etc. The original idea is that I sync my (non asus transformer) laptop with my computer at home so any files I have automatically are the latest version; e.g. a lesson plan I update during every lesson, so when I am home I can carry on working on it, as it has downloaded the latest version automatically.
Then in my head I would extend this to include my transformer prime, where it stores the latest version of a lot of files and updates with dropbox so I can use my prime as my primary laptop for work use...
I hope that clarifies it a little?
and thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post - it's very kind of you.

As nhshah said, if you favorite something, it will stay synced to the most recent updated version. The only thing I can not find an answer for is if it automatically updates the file to your computer also.
I get what you are looking for, basically she wants dropbox to run as if her TFP was a desktop/laptop computer where it automatically syncs as the file is updated. Unfortunately, dropbox has limited the due to saving data and battery.
600 MB additional free storage
Hi all
Just found a smart way to increase your Dropbox account with 600 MB:
1 Sign into your existing Dropbox account (or create a new account)
2 Goto https://www.dropbox.com/free
3 Follow instructions ... and voila 600 MB additional free storage
Old news.. you can pretty much do this stuff from within Dropbox web interface to increase storage space. It not new offers.
Also as much as I love DB some of those items are pretty invasive as you give them certain control if your account to post stuff as they want on your behalf... pass

[Q] Looking for automatic file uploader

Hey xda,
im looking for an application that will allow me to upload files to an online folder. The catch is this, i want it to automatically upload a file every week or so, without me having to upload it.
The reason is this: my father has problems with his phone but has no technological knowledge. Also, he is away from home every now and then for some time.
Therefore I need an application that will grab his backups (sms, logs, whatever) and upload them every week to an online folder (dropbox, google drive, idk).
Thanks for your time!

[Q] HTC ONE X+ Download vs SFTP. Invisible files.

When I download a DRM free mp3 like from openbsdorg/lyricshtml, using a browser, it arrives in the Download folder. I can then see it with the included ap "Downloads". If I click on it, it plays just great.
When I sftp the same file into the Download folder with Turbo Client it shows up fine in the in the "local" view provided by that ap. I can also see other files that I previously downloaded normally (using a browser) sitting beside it.
However, when I exit the Turbo Client, and try to view the file name with the built in Downloads ap, the file name is invisible, and obviously I can't play it either.
What is the difference between the files in the two cases? Is there an additional info file parallel the mp3 data file when I use the standard download process? If I go back into Turbo Client, I can still see the file that was sftp'd into the folder. It is still there. That's why I suspect additional information needs to be stored somewhere.
Can I avoid learning a whole new operating system for what is supposed to be a consumer friendly device?
How can I create the additional information that is needed?

Have you tried seeking help from the developer of Turbo Client? He seems very open to support requests according to his thread on xda (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2023646). I feel like this issue you are having is more closely related to the app you are using and not so much the device, so this forum probably is not the ideal place to pose your question.

Thanks. I have now posted on his forum as well, however, I have the feeling it is a generic issue, relating to the move to more Apple like total control of use of the device. My HTC ONE X+ is Android 4.1.1 (I should have mentioned earlier). I only resorted to sftp because I couldn't mount it as an SD drive. I am coming from an HTC Desire running Android 2.2 where I could just mount the device like a memory stick. That was nice. Now under Jelly Bean it seems there is an intent to take away user control. This is rotten. I'm not a cell phone guru. I don't want to have to learn about "rooting" the device, reflashing the ROM or whatever, I just want to use what should be a consumer friendly device, but I suspect an attempt to redefine the meaning of consumer friendly, to make us jump all kinds of hoops to get straight forward access to the data it deals with.
I'm sorry you've been having such trouble, but your skepticism regarding MTP (this has been Android's internal storage standard since ICS) is quite unfounded. An Android engineer talks about it a little more in this reddit post, but the general idea is MTP was done to make things easier, not harder, and you should most certainly still be able to access your device's storage by plugging it into your computer. You should be able to do this "out-of-the-box" so to speak, without rooting or unlocking the device. You might, however, need to install the necessary drivers for your phone. Android is all about giving the user a healthy amount of control over their device and what files come and go from it (to a certain degree), though I'm not sure I can say the same thing for HTC Sense...
edit: upon reading your post in the other thread, I think I understand your issue. The developer's response was unfortunately not terribly informative for someone who is not well-versed with Android. In order to access your mp3 files you will need to download a file browser app from the Play Store (like this one ) and navigate to your sdcard/Downloads folder.
I probably should have read your post a little more clearly, particularly where you mentioned you were trying to view the files with the Downloads app

[Q] Developing some kind of file upload service for u.

Hello, don't really know exactly where i should post this, but it would be awesome if some one could help me to try this out.
i have been modifying an old "content management system" that allows file uploads, now i have been able to restricting file uploads for members only and also modified to be able to allow registrations. i have also been able to set an expiration time for the files uploaded since i only have 2 gb storage. Now i figured since i got my web hosting service free along with the domain name, i could share some of it's goods with you guys.
I got 2 Gb storage and 100000 MB bandwidth.
Now you may wonder "How does this work?"
Well, it works like this, if you are a developer that produces one new update per day (aosp/CM), you can upload your rom to my site, when upload is done you will get one link for the download and one removal link.
Share the download link anywhere you would like to any one, and you don't need to remember the removal link, you can find that link again in "my files" section of the website. when you upload the file you will get some options like expiration date, i would be glad if you could use 3 days or less if you upload every 24 hours. if the file is ~300MB you can download it until the bandwidth plan is empty more or less and this site will be available for about 1 year unless i get premium from my one and only ad which i self applied from my host to get a free premium, but it will only work if you want to get you own website. xD
If you want to try this out for me, just register and start sharing
http://mspot.xyz/
Thanks!
