dumb question: im planning to flash a custom rom. Done with unlocking and rooting and i have cwm. Should I need an external sd card? Or is it fine to put the zipped rom in the internal sd card?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
You don't need to have an external sd. You can flash with your phone's sd.
I would use an SD card, every rom i flashed has been installed from sd card

installing update...
installation aborted.

i have tried flashing it from my internal and external sd card.
i have re-downloaded the rom but still to no avail
please help if you have encountered this or know what the cause is. Thank you!
Use "install zip from sd card" instead of "update zip". Don't remember the exact words.

it might help to know exactly what steps you're taking when 'flashing', from installing the rom on the phone to your 'flashing' steps.
install zip from sdcard / choose zip from sd card (& or internal sdcard) / sdcard / olympus_gold_edition_USversion.zip (and AOKP)
I have a samsung epic 4g and flashing on there became second nature to me which is why I dont understand what is going on here. I have everything that I need to run custom roms but it just wants to be stubborn

if you read his instructions he specified that you need to place it as a backup and restore to that rom
Yup i think its a backup not a flashable zip

Try installing from internal SD. Perhaps your external SD is messed up or slow......
Atrix Head
haha thank you guys. it was still a zip file when i was trying to restore it xp

Hi, I was wondering if I can flash a custom ROM into my Galaxy S2 but without SD card
it's already rooted but the problem is that in every tutorial I read here I find that I must copy the zip file of the custom ROM to the SD Card
So if there's anyway to flash this custom ROM without the SD card it would be great
Thanks.
Any tutorial you're following is probably using sdcard to mean internal storage. There's no requirement for a physical, external micro sd card.
So if I followed the tutorial and copied the zip file to the internal storage will it be okay or what ? (excuse me but I'm new to this and kinda lost)
You can link a tutorial to be sure, but unless you're formatting the internal storage (/sdcard), there's no reason it won't work. I've not seen a tutorial requiring the format of /sdcard.
yes, it will work fine.
read and reread the instructions until you are comfortable with them.

should not be a problem, just boot into standard recovery mode and flash the zip from your internal memory
As said CWM installs from SD card internal not external add on sd card .

Okay, this tutorial requires a separate SD Card and said the internal memory will not work

Author doesn't know what he's talking about. Use the MIUI site for support and installation instructions. Just because someone wrote instructions on a blog doesn't make them fact.
Thats MIUI and its BETA WARNING!!! USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!
i would not know what instructions another forum uses .
Try XDA

Download your MIUI rom from the official english website
http://miuiandroid.com/
Connect your phone to PC and copy the zip file to your phone ( since you don't have an SD card you can't copy anywhere else anyway ).
Reboot to ClockworkMod Recovery and do a wipe data, wipe cache.
Go to advanced , wipe Dalvik cache , wipe battery stats.
Go back and choose install from zip from sd card , then choose "choose zip from sd card" , select your zip , confirm it once more and you're done. After its finished select reboot.
Okay thanks guys you're all awesome, I did it and its intalled just fine
I've took a backup using CWM, but now can I restore my contacts or apps ?

Apps you can only restore if you backed them up with titanium backup before flashing. Contacts, well... You should have those on your SIM card, or Google account if you used sync.
Hi I had to post in here as I can't post in the development forums.
Anyway I'm using a checkrom revo (darknight) and when I install something from kitchen pro when it reboots into cwm I get a message along the lines of
CWM-based recovery v5.0.2.7
Waiting for sd card to mount (20s)
Sd card mounted...
verifying sd card marker...
Sd card marker not found...
Checking internal sd card marker...
I've noticed it does this when using cwm 5.0.2.7 but not earlier versions.
Is there something wrong with my phone, is it cwm?
The package installs but I get the error beforehand
Thanks
I now have this issue.
Wondering if you were ever able to fix this? and if so how. Thanks

darn, you bumped a very old thread xD
anyway, did you try flashing another Kernel? you can find the kernels here
i hope this helps! cheers
Better than starting a new thread?
Here it is what I have done so far using Siyah Kernal:
For some reason when I try to do a backup from CWM (onto the external sd card) I get the error "sd card marker not found" it then goes to the internal sd card and makes a backup file there but it does not work when I try to restore from that file.
If I go into recovery mode and do a back up to external card from there it indicates on the screen that it is saving it to the external sd card but it actually saves it to the internal sd card??
I have reflashed the kernal several times (4.1.5) reflashed 4.1.1, even tried a different kernal but no luck. Tried the kernal cleaning script and then reflashed the kernal no luck. Reformatted the sd card, no luck. Installed original rom via odin, then rooted then reflashed rom still no luck.
Thanks for noticing. :highfive:
Hi all. Used the search tool but couldn't find nothing similar.
My ATRIX is unlocked, rooted, running stock gingerbread. I used the automatic script for unlocking bootloader and rooting. I guess it installed Tenfar's recovery too. I installed Rom Manager some time ago, and today I have CWM Recovery 5.0.2.0. So I wanted to switch to romracer's in order to install a custom rom (maybe neutrino or wet dream, something with hdmi landscape =).
I was trying to instal romracer's recovery this morning. I'd put the .zip on my ext sdcard, but when I tried to use the "Install fom SD card" in RomManager, all I could see was the internal storage files. So I went ahead and transferred the .zip to internal storage root. Used Install from SD card again, selected the .zip. The phone rebooted, got into recovery mode.
That's when the problem came. It keeps waiting for SD card to mount, and then times out (20s). Is this sdcard trying to mount the EXT microSD? Why he needs it, since the .zip is in internal storage?
Any ideas on how to solve this? Am I doing something wrong here? Thank you very much. sorry providing so much information, thought it could be useful.
edit: additional information: I can see and use the external sd card on the phone normally. Can acces it via USB too, no problem.
Where exactly are you stuck? You say you managed to flash a zip and then rebooted the phone, right? So where are you now?
What filesystem is your SD card formatted in?
Boot to fastboot and flash recovery from fastboot.

When it reboots and automatically enters recovery, it says it cannot mount the SD card. So it doesn't actually flashes the zip, I guess. I'm where I begun.
Windows says its "FAT". Not FAT32, just FAT. Its a small (512mb) microsd card from my old phone. Should I format it? Maybe its just too small to use in this phone?
Thanks for your reply.

no clue about what was happening to my sdcard?
I thought it might've been a fs issue - I had something similar recently, but it does seem more like your recovery is borked!
As that guy up there ^ said, flashing over the recovery may do the trick
Hello, I hope I am in the right thread.
Ive just purchased a nook tablet and i cannot find any instructions on how to root it...either the instructions are on another firmware, or the links provided will not work.
currently i am trying to use this thread to root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21895025&postcount=14
i have done this process 3 times and still no luck. will anyone please help me root my 16gb nook tablet running firmware 1.4.1?
nook root 1.4.1
i get as far ass rebooting to the "apply update .zip"
everytime i select "apply update" the nook starts the process, but then show a "installation aborted" message.
how do i fix this?
Try downloading the zip again (I actually never seemed to have an update.zip on my card) or download the zip file from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488035
And put it on your SD Card then flash it through CWM. That's the method that worked for me.

Yes, then just pick "Choose Zip from SD Card" and navigate to that specific zip.

ok when i do that it says:
"finding update package..."
"opening update package..."
"installing update..."
"installation aborted"
any idea what all this means?
when you say "flash" what do you mean?
i used the disk imager to enable me to get to the screen that has the option to "choose zip from sdcard"
i hope thats what you meant....stil new to this, sorry.
Are you trying flash update.zip or flash zip from sd card? They are different options from within the recovery. You want just the one that says flash zip from sd card. I'll grab my nook and get the exact wording from the cwm sd card I made if you need me to.
Even if you named the zip update.zip, I'd still use the option that let's you pick it yourself.

ok i know im doing something wrong because now the nook will not even boot into the recovery option (where i choose to intall update from dscard)
?
i think it was because i used a class 2 sdcard rather than my class 4...going to retry. will post results
well that worked like a charm, i cannot thank you enough kind sir...
before we wrap things up here, can you tell me how i can jailbreak this tablet so i can use apps i downloaded from thepiratebay?
once again, thank you so much LiquidZoo.
Dave
I don't condone piracy, and it's against the forum TOS, but you can Google it. The answer is there. It's not a jailbreak, just enabling non-play store app sources to side-load.
Glad you got root working, though.

Hey everyone.
I think I may have run into a small hiccup trying to flash my Android device. I'm trying too root a Bell Canada Galaxy Note - I717M.
I managed to find a ZIP file containing CWM recovery image, Superuser, and ODIN Flasher. I loaded these files in the root folder of the INTERNAL (16GB) memory card on the device. (Not an EXTERNAL SD)
As my first step I flashed the CWM rar file in Odin under "PDA" - The device reset and next I booted into Clockwork Mod. Now in the ClockMod menu, the option to "Flash ZIP from SD Card" is not displayed.
I don't currently have an SD card inserted. Does these mean that I would have to reflash CWM entirely? Or perhaps I performed the procedure incorrectly by copying the files to the Internal Storage card?
Even though the Recovery menu did install, is the missing option a result of the device needing to be rooted FIRST, prior to CWM installation?
I'm a little confused so any help would be appreciated. Would I just be looking at a complete REFLASH with Odin after inserting an EXTERNAL SD? Or just placing the files on the external SD Card (once inserted), booting back into CWM and selecting "Install from ZIP"? (If it becomes available)
My main objective is simply to root the device. I'm not looking to install a custom ROM at the moment ... just perform a simple root.
Thanks for everyone's time.
Canadian notes have an extra step.

Thank you so much for the link. I completely would have missed that. I just want to be sure I'm doing this correctly now that there is this "extra step"
The procedure says "If you have an Offending Script" from an OTA ICS UPGRADE
To be honest I'm not sure if this device was upgraded to 4.0 via KIES or OTA. As I bought the phone already running 4.0.4.
Would that make any difference to the procedure outlined in the link? (E.g. Step 7)
Just to clarify. If the phone is supposed to "Reinstall stock recovery" than why would I still be able to boot into CWM?
Thanks for the help :good:
Install from SD is external
Install from internal SD is internal
CWM probably doesn't detect the external and just removes that option

Sounds reasonable. Forgive me, I've been off Android for a while now. Just beginning to get back into the swing of things.
I reapplied CWM in Odin. Same result. Although what I thought as CWM is in-fact stock recovery. I'll give the method in the link a shot.
Thanks for the help :good:
