Flash ZIP From SD Card - Not Displayed - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hey everyone.
I think I may have run into a small hiccup trying to flash my Android device. I'm trying too root a Bell Canada Galaxy Note - I717M.
I managed to find a ZIP file containing CWM recovery image, Superuser, and ODIN Flasher. I loaded these files in the root folder of the INTERNAL (16GB) memory card on the device. (Not an EXTERNAL SD)
As my first step I flashed the CWM rar file in Odin under "PDA" - The device reset and next I booted into Clockwork Mod. Now in the ClockMod menu, the option to "Flash ZIP from SD Card" is not displayed.
I don't currently have an SD card inserted. Does these mean that I would have to reflash CWM entirely? Or perhaps I performed the procedure incorrectly by copying the files to the Internal Storage card?
Even though the Recovery menu did install, is the missing option a result of the device needing to be rooted FIRST, prior to CWM installation?
I'm a little confused so any help would be appreciated. Would I just be looking at a complete REFLASH with Odin after inserting an EXTERNAL SD? Or just placing the files on the external SD Card (once inserted), booting back into CWM and selecting "Install from ZIP"? (If it becomes available)
My main objective is simply to root the device. I'm not looking to install a custom ROM at the moment ... just perform a simple root.
Thanks for everyone's time.

Canadian notes have an extra step.

Thank you so much for the link. I completely would have missed that. I just want to be sure I'm doing this correctly now that there is this "extra step"
The procedure says "If you have an Offending Script" from an OTA ICS UPGRADE
To be honest I'm not sure if this device was upgraded to 4.0 via KIES or OTA. As I bought the phone already running 4.0.4.
Would that make any difference to the procedure outlined in the link? (E.g. Step 7)
Just to clarify. If the phone is supposed to "Reinstall stock recovery" than why would I still be able to boot into CWM?
Thanks for the help :good:

Install from SD is external
Install from internal SD is internal
CWM probably doesn't detect the external and just removes that option

Sounds reasonable. Forgive me, I've been off Android for a while now. Just beginning to get back into the swing of things.
I reapplied CWM in Odin. Same result. Although what I thought as CWM is in-fact stock recovery. I'll give the method in the link a shot.
Thanks for the help :good:

[Q] Quick help for flashing via CWM

Hey I'm currently using the lightning 6.1 rom you guys have on this forum but I'm trying to get the new cyanogen mod 7.1 on my galaxy s2 instead via CWM.
I've rebooted into recovery to try flash the .zip but nothing shows up on my SD card... when I try enter the folder it just springs back to the start menu and i'm unable to flash.
Does anyone have any idea?
I have:
Formated my SD card, then put all my data back on.
Made sure the SD card is working.
So how comes its not working via CWM? I can ask to flash it via the actual app but when it boots into recovery to flash it gives me a signature error.

Try going to the "mounts and storage" option in CWM. Then click on mount sd card. That might be your problem.
TIP: If you want to flash CM7 flash this kernel before http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693 , becasue if your using cf root kenrel you will get into trouble.

I tried this and it still says there are no files on the SD card... do I need to name it something specific? I tried naming the rom zip update.zip once but that didn't do anything either.
I dont really want to flash to a recovery rom only if i'm not able to get CM7 off of my SD Card :/
*edit* I currently have the zips at the root of the SD card.. there are 4 folders data, LOST.DIR, DCIM and media... should the files be on the root or in another folder?
Make sure the zip file is on the root of the "internal" sd card, also just keep the name the same as the downloaded file. You should find it somewhere at the bottom of the list. Also select with the menu button, not the power button. Power button is to go back.

He means, place it on phones storage, and not the SD card. Just use the USB cable and transfer it from your PC (Or Mac )

Any ideas ?

Looking for a rom I can install via Odin . Needs to be a tar file but I cant seem to find one at the moment......any pointers very welcome.
Thanks
sr
You don't have custom recovery working to flash .zip?
Can flash stock firmware found on Intratech thread. Will lose root, but can flash CF-root kernel from Chainfire thread to get root again...... All with Odin.

Sorry
...quite new to all this. I have installed a rom on the sd disk but when I go to install zip from sd card can't see it !!
If its ok could you explain your method ....as Im a bit of a thicko !!
thanks
sr
Depending on what version of cwm 4 or 5 you have will make a slight difference but essentially these process.
Place the Rom zip on your internal sdcard not the removable external sdcard.
Navigate to flash .zip from internal sdcard in recovery. If you are changing versions if android or. 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 or flashing between different Roms, maybe best to factory reset, wipe.cache, and wipe dalvik (in advanced) from within recovery. Immediately flash ROM, and then reboot, give it a few minutes. You will lose your data etc, but will help to ensure you don't get boot loops or force closes etc

...for the prompt reply, problem is I can only get rom onto the external sd card. Can't see a way of getting it onto the internal one !
Guess this looks like my evenings planned with the wife moaning at me!
sr
Boot up. Connect USB to PC and transfer the file.... If your still not sure if your putting it in the correct "sdcard", power off and remove extrenal sdcard.
You could also connect cable to PC in recovery, then "mount USB storage",. Transfer file to USB storage, "unmount", then flash from internal sdcard (look for the USB storage within).USB storage is just a sub directory of the internal sdcard.

Me again..
I have the phone working but the PC will not recognise and storage on the phone which means I can't update etc. Do you have any ideas of what is needed to fix this. At the moment the only thing that I can use is Odin. I did have another rom on the sd card but cant open it.
Sorry about this !!
Steve
Have you installed Samsung Kies? You need the diverts from that installed to PC. Just remember that you need to close kies before using Odin.
Edit :You have selected connect from the phone (maybe have notification on phone status bar?)

Phew....
Managed to open another rom zip and installed, things back to normal (and before the wife gets home) !
One last question .....I install roms on the internal sd as I can never see them when installed on the external sd, guess I am missing something simple ?
Thanks for your help this afternoon

[Q] Can't mount SD card on recovery

Hi all. Used the search tool but couldn't find nothing similar.
My ATRIX is unlocked, rooted, running stock gingerbread. I used the automatic script for unlocking bootloader and rooting. I guess it installed Tenfar's recovery too. I installed Rom Manager some time ago, and today I have CWM Recovery 5.0.2.0. So I wanted to switch to romracer's in order to install a custom rom (maybe neutrino or wet dream, something with hdmi landscape =).
I was trying to instal romracer's recovery this morning. I'd put the .zip on my ext sdcard, but when I tried to use the "Install fom SD card" in RomManager, all I could see was the internal storage files. So I went ahead and transferred the .zip to internal storage root. Used Install from SD card again, selected the .zip. The phone rebooted, got into recovery mode.
That's when the problem came. It keeps waiting for SD card to mount, and then times out (20s). Is this sdcard trying to mount the EXT microSD? Why he needs it, since the .zip is in internal storage?
Any ideas on how to solve this? Am I doing something wrong here? Thank you very much. sorry providing so much information, thought it could be useful.
edit: additional information: I can see and use the external sd card on the phone normally. Can acces it via USB too, no problem.
Where exactly are you stuck? You say you managed to flash a zip and then rebooted the phone, right? So where are you now?
What filesystem is your SD card formatted in?
Boot to fastboot and flash recovery from fastboot.

When it reboots and automatically enters recovery, it says it cannot mount the SD card. So it doesn't actually flashes the zip, I guess. I'm where I begun.
Windows says its "FAT". Not FAT32, just FAT. Its a small (512mb) microsd card from my old phone. Should I format it? Maybe its just too small to use in this phone?
Thanks for your reply.

no clue about what was happening to my sdcard?
I thought it might've been a fs issue - I had something similar recently, but it does seem more like your recovery is borked!
As that guy up there ^ said, flashing over the recovery may do the trick

[Q]Flashing a custom rom

dumb question: im planning to flash a custom rom. Done with unlocking and rooting and i have cwm. Should I need an external sd card? Or is it fine to put the zipped rom in the internal sd card?

You don't need to have an external sd. You can flash with your phone's sd.
I would use an SD card, every rom i flashed has been installed from sd card

i have tried flashing it from my internal and external sd card.
i have re-downloaded the rom but still to no avail

Use "install zip from sd card" instead of "update zip". Don't remember the exact words.

it might help to know exactly what steps you're taking when 'flashing', from installing the rom on the phone to your 'flashing' steps.
install zip from sdcard / choose zip from sd card (& or internal sdcard) / sdcard / olympus_gold_edition_USversion.zip (and AOKP)
I have a samsung epic 4g and flashing on there became second nature to me which is why I dont understand what is going on here. I have everything that I need to run custom roms but it just wants to be stubborn

Try installing from internal SD. Perhaps your external SD is messed up or slow......

haha thank you guys. it was still a zip file when i was trying to restore it xp

Where is the zip to root your Nook Tablet?

Hey all, been reading a bunch on rooting the nook tablet so you would think I would be able to do this no questions asked but unfortunately I can't.
My nook is on that 1.4.3 so I am using this method here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21895025&postcount=14
and there is no zip in that original download and there is no gapp. So I tried to follow the instructions from page 25 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583&page=25
and then boot to the CWM. Now I go to try and unzip the zip I downloaded from page 25, and none of those are zips (side note, for whatever reason when I unzipped the files from page 25 into a folder so I could grab them whenever. Windows encrypted them. So when I copied them to the SD card I un-encrypted them)
So my question to everyone is: Where is this actual zip file and gapp at? My end goal is to root my Nook tablet to either ICS or Jellybean 'permanently' so as not to keep an SD card in it.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
It's probably easier to just skip plain root and flash ICS or Jellybean. Would you rather do that or stay rooted on the stock ROM for a while?

I want to get rid of the Nook interface/OS period
but....I want to make sure I get a pretty stable flash going if that is the case? I can always flash back right?
Thanks for your quick reply Solar Plexus
Yes, you can flash back. Are you familiar with ClockworkMod recovery? The first order of business is to decide whether you want CWM recovery flashed internally or just run it from an SD card. I'm assuming you want everything internal, but just making sure.

I am pretty sure I have the CMW installed on a SD card right now because I can boot to the area where you choose a zip. You know when you boot and you get the white background and the box center on screen.
Is it best to have it internal?
Yes, the white, then the box, then black screen with a bunch of options in neon blue lettering. It should say CWM recovery at the top somewhere. You have this, correct?

Correct, I have this on my SD card currently
You can keep it running from SD card or flash it internally. Either way, you'll always have the option to boot recovery from SD, that is, as long as you're able to boot from an SD card in general.
At any rate, you're ready to flash a new ROM. Download the ROM from the Development subforum that you want to flash and report back. CM7 is currently the most stable.

So the method in my first post makes my SD card a partition of 75mb or so. I won't be able to put the ZIP ROMs on to it. Do you have a link to a detailed instruction so I can write boot img on to the SD card without killing all my space? My SD card is 16gb.
Don't put the ROM on that SD card. Put the ROM zip and gApps on the internal storage of your actual NT (that's the /mnt/media partition). Then you can choose the option to "install zip from internal SD" in CWM.
Also, do you have a 16GB NT or 8GB? Which ROM will you be flashing?

I have the 16GB NT.
I think I will go with the CM7 mod, but I am so tempted to do the jelly bean CM10 mod. Have it on my galaxy nexus and love it. Edit: I have the stock 4.1 OTA update on my galaxy nexus not the CM10 mod
You might want to wait a little while. I get lots of black screens of death on my CM10 ROM. CM7 will definitely be an upgrade to what you're used to though, so don't worry about that.
Here's the directions for flashing a new ROM on your NT:
1.) Make a backup of your current ROM (just to be safe!)
2.) Advanced options -> wipe Dalvik cache
3.) Install your ROM.
4.) Wipe data and cache.
5.) Install gApps.
6.) Reboot and enjoy.

Hey thanks for the info, but where exactly do I throw this zip file onto the Nook at? You said to put it on internal storage. Can I put it anywhere?
Put it on the root of the /mnt/media partition. It's the partition that pops up when you plug your NT into a PC. Or navigate to it using the file explorer if you downloaded straight to the NT.

Yes, I can put it on my actual My Nook G: (I assume I have less SSD/HDD than you or named them differently) and the other drive for the nook is considered a 'removable disk'
The My Nook has the files:

B&N Downloads
DCIM
LOST.DIR
My FIles
