Nexus broke, off to next flagship... - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys! My Galaxy Nexus broke, so now I'm here. I'm going to order it tommorrow, so plenty of time to ask a few questions
Q1: Which looks better? Blue or White?
Q2: Does everything work OK?
Q3: How is the speed of the QC compared to a DC?
Q4: How high have you overclocked your S3, and how does it feel? Does it get warm, does it have any other side effects, that are excessively noticable?
Q5: How's the battery life?
Thanks for great answers, already! Can't wait to get the device and hope it's not another mondays-device... lol
It's arriving next week, so please, I need some answers :O

Black or White

Hey guys, feels good to be back on i9100 forums, bought an i727, and i must say, i hate that that POS phone, 1.5Ghz feels like 1.0 Ghz single core. Im going back to my old Galaxy S2 after i sell the i727. Really want to get the white one, BUT, checked Gsmarena and it says that the white Galaxy S2 has a different chipset and a different GPU, now, my question is, will i be able to flash ROMs without any problems or incapability issues? And will i see much difference between the two phones? Slower faster, better worse? Im also a gaming fan, and when i used to download games, i remember there a different .apk's for different types of GPU, finding APK's for Mali 400 was never a problem, but what about the PowerVR SGX540? Thanks a lot guys.
Checked out some benchmarks, which i know dont really mean too much, optimus 3d and bionic use same gpu and chipset, but they are worse than exynos sgs2. How significant is this?

In theory, there's no difference between a black GT-I9100 and a white one. What's probably happened is that the site has two different devices (the GSII, and a variant) listed as the same device. Go look up the specs of the international GT-I9100 and pick the one that matches that.
Regarding the question about compatibility, if the device really does have a different chipset and GPU, then no, you'll need ROMs and kernels that are tailored to that device's hardware - so you'd need to figure out which variant of the GSII it is.
On a personal note, I think the black Galaxy S II looks better than the white one
Thanks a lot for the reply bud. Yea i figured the ROMs wouldnt be suitable for different hardware, so thanks for confirming. I went on Bell's website (my provider) to check the specs, but obviously they dont go into such deep details. I guess i will have to ask someone who already has this phone to look up the specs in the manual or something.
I had a black one for four months, just wanna try white, to me the white one looks better
Thanks again

So that one there looks fine, minus the fact it has LTE capabilities, which are lacking in the original GSII. I can't shed much light here, unfortunately.
That said, I think you should go with the Galaxy Nexus - the Galaxy S II is a fantastic piece of hardware, but in nearly every aspect the Galaxy Nexus either matches it, or beats it, and, more importantly, not only does the Galaxy Nexus get direct updates from Google immediately (compared to 4+ months from Samsung), but from experience, all the best development happens for Nexus devices. If it's within your means, go the Galaxy Nexus.
Nexus is 600$ here in Toronto, and thats a bit out of my price range, i mean i can definitely buy it, i just dont see/know if its worth the 150$ extra dollars. Im a heavy camera user, and having an 8mp camera is a huge plus for sgs2. Going back to 5mp....naw. My 5 year old nokia n95 8gig has the same camera. Also dont like how it doesnt have a scratch-less glass. But you definitely made me think Is the nexus really that good? And can you please expand on the updates part? Immediate updates?
PS. Cant see where you found that its LTE compatable, maybe took a wrong turn by accident?

In the long run, it's worth it. Believe me on that.
On the camera, yeah, it's a bit of a step down, but 5MP is by no means a bad camera, and the shutter speed of the Galaxy Nexus is lightyears ahead of the Galaxy S II. Plus, lense technology in smartphones has come a long way since the days of the N95 - so while the sensor might be the same resolution, the picture quality is just amazing.
The glass on the Galaxy Nexus, while not 'Gorilla Glass', which keep in mind is just a marketing term for chemically strengthened glass, is still very scratch resistant. As long as you take care of your device as you would any expensive device, it'll be fine. As a precaution, I'd still apply a screen protector though - but I do that with even my Galaxy S II, no matter how scratch resistant it is. Plus, the curved glass is so much more ergonomic and pleasant to use (and looks downright sexy).
About the updates...
When Google finishes developing updates for Android, i.e. once they've finished the coding and testing, they release it for Nexus devices only, so the Nexus One, the Nexus S, and the Galaxy Nexus - any other phone has to have the code ported to it by it's manufacturer, a process which takes months. So, the Nexus devices always get updates first, months before any other device.
All this, plus the fact that there's no carrier bloatware, and a 720p HD screen, etc. makes it one killer device!
Got too carried aay with the new years. I checked out a loooot of videos on the Nexus, i really like the software, but the speed doesnt impress me, that lag between transition from portrait to landscape...i kid you not, my N95 did it faster and in this one review they were complaining a lot about the camera. Huuge, no no for me. Its quite pricey, and the reason being is, ICS. If other phones start getting ICS, this phone will drop in price like craaazyyy. I found a good S2 for 400, and now the margin increased to 200$ between S2 and the nexus, and to tell you the truth i dont think the nexus is 200$ better.

ICS is pretty much made for SGS2, maybe a month or so and it will be ready to use.

Now that NITZ is fixed in XXKP8, and the CyanogenMod 9 team have solved a lot of the camera issues, etc., I think you're about right with a month for a decent daily driver - but Samsung won't have an official ICS ROM until around April.
Personally, I'd go the Galaxy Nexus, but the Galaxy S II is still a monster phone, so go with whatever you prefer.
Get a pink SGS2. Stylish
In all seriousness tho, if you're choosing (or not) a phone based on the colour of the handset, you really should be asking yourself what the hell you're doing on XDA in the first place

I dont mind waiting for an official, but if the one on xda is worthy, ill get that. Speaking of the fix, im quite amazed xda already got roms, i mean...how long ago was the phone released? Thanks a lot for your input anyways man.

Lol, the things xda keeps enforcing are: dont spam and read previous posts. Not only are you posting a garbage/useless reply, but you also dont know where i am coming from because you failed to read.....anything from this thread. My question was wether i need a diiferent rom, if the s2 had different internals.
I guess you'd better report me to the mods then.
Edit to add - You were told in the first reply to your OP that you were mistaken re: differences in specs between different coloured handsets. If you'd bothered to do your research properly (even Wikipedia would have given you the differences in hardware between the SGS2 "variants"), you would have known this already :-|

Well, considering that with Gingerbread, I run CyanogenMod 7 instead of Samsung's ROM, I think I'll end up going with the CyanogenMod 9 ROM over Samsung's anyway
The Galaxy S II, at least in Australia, launched in May last year. If you're referring to the Galaxy Nexus, it'd be about a month or so, give or take two weeks. But the source code was out about a week or two before the Galaxy Nexus shipped, and has been out for around two months or so, again give or take a bit
I might be getting one sometime in the next few weeks. I was just wondering, is anyone using an InvisibleShield, or BSE or any other skin on their white Galaxy S II?
I'm curious as to how it looks, if it makes the white look less... white.
Gonna buy mine sometime soon too. I dont think it makes a difference, my friend has a white iphone with a ghost screen protector, it lookes exactly the same. MAYBE just a tiny little bit less...white

Thinking about going back to my S2... maybe I am crazy

I'm looking for some outside opinions on this. Here's my thoughts/reasons for going back to the S2...
1. It seems like I had better battery with the S2.
2. S2 was much snappier (exynos)
3. Waaaaay more roms.
4. Way more accessories.
Now, the counter the roms and accessories is the Note hasn't been out as long. But my thinking is by the time the Note catches up on roms, the S3 will be out (maybe).
So I'm looking at selling my Note and buying an S2 (again) but this time, no contract. Am I crazy? Would you do it if you were me? I love my note, but I had more fun on my S2 I guess.
I put mine up on Craigslist for $625 to see if anyone will bite and make a offer. But only too take that money and buy the international version which has alot more development for it currently. I had interest in upcoming LTE in my area but ehhh HSPA+ works fine.
If all else fails i still love the ATT note

Well ya. S2 has only been out for a ling time as the Note has only been out for a month. What do you expect?
Have you rooted it and installed the Saurom yet? Makes it a lot snappier. Like butta.

My concern is that S2 seems to be more port friendly since it shares the chip set with the international version, where the Note(att) does not. So i'm not sure the roms will ever catch up. At least not by the time the S3 is released.
Annnnd actually... I hadn't even considered that I'm still inside the 30 day time frame. I guess I could return it... Think I can get away with that with the flash counter being triggered??
And for the record I've tried saurom and it made the lockscreens look funny with a black background. I've been pretty happy with TPC rom as far as performance I guess. But either way, nothing is as snappy as what my S2 was.
I am returning mine tomorrow and going back to my Galaxy S2. Like you said the phone is just faster and snappier. Can't wait for the new Sammy LTE chip running at 1.5ghz.

3 weeks since the at&t Note release, still seems to be no real indication of ICS coming to it soon. And on top of that, subsidized pricing on it still hasn't dropped to at least $200.
Paying $250-300 to renew contract for a phone with outdated software is a huge waste of money imo. But it would make more sense if you either currently had no working phone, or the current phone was nearing its 'death -bed'.
For the time being, I'm mostly using the Pre 3 even though its screen size is around the same as the iphones. But it's the webOS on it that makes it easier for me to ignore the small screen size.
Ironic how I kept thinking that it's Samsung and/or HTC or bust....but yet I'm saddled with Dell and HP instead.
So funny how people expected ICS to come out as soon as they bought the note when it was said the note is EXPECTED to RECEIVE ICS! No such date was Ever mentioned, only for the international version!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
You're not crazy.
I use my international gs2 as my daily driver and switch to the note every few days. I basically use it as the smallest tablet rather than the largest phone. I have a stand, my n64, psx emulator going and it looks like I may get 4 days battery life.
I don't think 30 days is enough for me to choose so I'll give it a bit longer and sell it later on if necessary.
I actually already returned the Note for an S2 already. My reasons were pretty much the same as yours, but also including inability for one handed operation. Another factor for me was gaming! Too many games weren't supported on the Note yet and I didn't have the patience to wait for it.
I won't lie though, not having the Note now for a week i do miss the big screen and the colors. It seems the colors on the S2 are just off compared to the Note.
In the end I might even return the S2 and wait for the Skyrocket HD or the S3. I think my screen fix would be fixed with either of those newer phones (assuming the S3 comes in higher than 480 x 800).
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA
Came from the Skyrocket and I was in love with that phone almost as much as my all-time favorite the HD2. But I couldn't look past the bigger screen on the Note. I have to say after buying the Note I wasn't going to commit to it all the way and held onto my Skyrocket just in case. The Note isn't quite as fast, but fast enough and I made look like SkyICS Rom on the Skyrocket. I have a big hand so I am able to pull off one handed use for the most part on the Note. Battery is about the same, around 12-13 hours. Going back to my Skyrocket now seems funny and small. Note it is!
I just returned my Note last weekend after having it for a week. I have to move three other family member phone's sim cards just to revert back; it was painful. While I miss the Note's larger and higher def screen, my good ole Skyrocket was very much zippier, better battery life and all my screens line up. My Note was rooted and was oc'd to 1.7.
But the real trigger for this reversal was that I nearly dropped the Note more than a few times trying to do stuff with my one free hand. The final straw was when my case came and I still have a hard time holding on to it. I have fairly large hands but there is only so much you can reach with one hand.
Also, it was tougher to hide the screen from peering eyes when you're trying to sneak in a quick email, web lookup :0. And this is with the brightness all the way down.
I'll patiently await the Skyrocket HD or something else that is no more than a tiny bit larger.
Looks like Aaron from phone dog is going to use the s2 as his daily driver also. Note was too much of a beast for him to handle.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I've made the decision to go back to the S2. Hopefully, I'll get used to the smaller screen size. I'll use the S2 until the S3 comes out. The note is a fantastic phone...it really is.. but I need something with more dev support UNTIL the S3 comes out. Plus, the battery on the S2 (with custom roms) was insane. Not to mention a better performing processor.
I'm going to miss having a phone as big as my face.

Better battery life on the Skyrocket? You're doing something wrong or you got a defective device. My Note lasts nearly twice as long as my Skyrocket ever did.
You people going back to an S2 are crazy. If you don't have LTE in your area, I can almost understand it, but I will never go back to a non-LTE device again. And I wouldn't give up the bigger screen and better battery life on my Note for any other phone out right now.

Seems to just be general impatience. They expect 100 Roms within a month of release. Even though these devs are doing this at night in their spare time.

I guess. I personally don't care about ROMs. I figured I'd just wait for the official ICS and I'm fine with the current Gingerbread ROM anyway. My Skyrocket is still sitting in a drawer and every time I pick it up, it feels tiny and inconsequential compared to the Note. I also remember how long the battery lasted for me and I couldn't even consider going back to it.
Galaxy S2 was a great phone and the Exynos is badass, but I'll sacrifice a little speed for LTE. I hit between 40 and 50 mbps consistently here in Texas. Data cap or not, that makes everything faster.
I wouldn't trade my note for the world. Roms will be available soon. People just have no patience. I don't mind waiting for ics.

[Q] Good or Bad?

Well hello bigger forums I came from the Ace family and I have plans on buying SII. I've heard good rumours about the phone and I've seen lots of interesting roms for it too (plus it's on main forum XD)
My options are HTC One X, GNote or SII and SII is quite leading in my eyes ATM.
Last question is, what is the price of SII in the US WITHOUT the contract?
Thanks for the responses guys, hope to see you soon
S24Lyfe
it depends on whether you're looking for an unlocked phone (being able to use any network) or if you wish to purchase it outright from your current service provider.
Unlocked it's about $500-600, and prices will range depending on your carrier if you want to go for option number 2.
I personally own the S2 and I can honestly say I love this phone.
Took less than 5 minutes to root, plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of custom roms being developed for it, and the hardware itself is just great (it outperforms the iPhone 4s) - I highly recommend it.
Just my two cents.

S2 is still a beast when compared to other mobiles you have mentioned with the exception of HD screen. If you like bigger screens and feel compact to use it go for note, else s2 with its amoled is what you need

I'll be going next week so I need to make decisions now.
SGS2 is still a good phone. I had it for just over 10 months and loved it.
Got a HOX now and love that just as much. HOX has the HD screen which is lovely. SLCD2 vs AMOLED. Amoled has better blacks and such but I like the SLCD2 as well. Whites are better and not prone to screen burns.
Hardware wise both are beasts. Dual Core vs Quad Teg 3. DC is still fast enough not enough optimising quad at the moment. With TEG3 you get the range of Nvidia games without the need for Chainfire.
Design wise HOX wins, it's sexy and sleek but the SGS2 is lighter and thinner. Both feel good in the hand.
UI wise, Sense wins for me personally, but TouchWiz is not as bad it has it's own feature set.
If you want the cheaper device go for the SGS2 as price is decent. You'll be happy with any of your choices. The Galaxy range of devices are far easier to root with their unlocked bootloaders if you want to go with custom roms and such and development is very active with HOX it will get active when more devs have it. I'd still rate the Note over the SGS2 as it's a beast, if you can handle the size then definitely get the note.
I agree, the note is excellent.

[Q] About the statement of happines of SGS2 Users!

Hello,
So i am upgrading from SGmini to SGS2
And i was thinking firstly to ask some experienced users with SGS
I could buy the SGS3 but i dont really like that phone (don't know why, but it didnt feel really good in my hand )
So what does the users that own SGS2 think of their phone?
Does it play the newly released games? like some RPG games?
Is it really fast even after installing over 10+ apps/games?
Whats the quality of recording/capturing?
At least just tell me it is WORTH to buy?
sorry for bumping many questions
P.S after i get my phone i should ask a very STEP BY STEP what to do with the phone to work faster!
The SGS2 is still a good smartphone (I'm happy with it right now), but if I were you, I'd go for the SGS3: once you get used to it it's an awesome device, trust me.

Galaxy S2 is still a very capable phone. it can perform without any disappointment with all those things you listed.
I'll advise you to go for the S3 but If the size is a problem, then you can wait for S3 mini (Rumours say it will the same Galaxy S3 in a smaller shell).
If size is not the problem, then you can also consider Note II.

Which one do you want to buy? the Normal I9100 or the I9100G? If you want to buy the I9100 then there will be developing problems whenever a new Android version will come out. Just look at the CM10 thread. The Exynos processor of the I9100 is a huge pain in the ass and Android 4.1.1 is still not working on the I9100 as it should. If you want to upgrade to the newest Android version really quick then buy the I9100G version. It will get quick updates through the community because the processor is from Texas Instruments (Omap) and is developer friendly.
The normal I9100 is still a great phone in my opinion. ICS works very well with it. I`ve been using it for months without any problems.
One question though, have you considered buying a Galaxy Nexus? You would get updates very fast since they would come from Google directly.
im gonna put this simply, galaxy s2 is the best phone I've ever owned! fast, reliable and never bored of it!

This is hands down the best phone I have ever owned as well! Its damn fast, it has a beautiful screen and it has a killer camera. What more would you want in a phone? Sure the GS3 is faster and bigger but having this baby doesn't feel like a major step down from the S3. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have an S3 but I'm not in a rush at all to get it. I don't know why but I really love the shape and look of the S2.
Also one interesting point to note is that for some reason the S2 is a lot tougher than the S3 when compared in drop tests (despite the Gorilla Glass 2 on the S3.) Google it and see for yourself on youtube (helpful if you have butter fingers, but I treasure my S2 like a new born child so thankfully I have never personally dropped mine)
i second, s3 is more sophisticated phone. if you drop it then you have high risk of damage as compared to s2.
but on the other side its loaded with some very good feature and will keep on getting future os updates whereas s2 will only get its last update.
well i would advise to go with s3 if its only the size which is holding you else without any further thinking go for s2

well well, I really like the SGS2 and I know that SGS3 has really much new features but the size, the form is that i dont like. Take a look at Note2 its a good phone and fast but its tooooo big like the SGS3.
So as i see everyone loves the SGS2 and it still run the latest games!!
So I will wait till some new replys and suggestions!

same here, well i haven't dropped my phone out of my casemate tough case! only once in the case but not one mark appeared!
i did around 2 to 3 months of research before getting this phone waiting patiently watching youtube video reviews etc by samjpullen (how sad that i remember the name! ) but i was serious about choosing this phone after all you have it for two years. i will no doubt do the same for my next phone- i hope rumours are true and that a smaller alternative to the s3 will become available- im not concerned though as my upgrade isn't due till next July/August.
i am though trying my hardest to convince my wife to get an s2 for her upgrade in November or December!
people say the s2 is big but not in comparison to others!

So you think SGS2 is a really good phone for taking pictures and playing movies/games?
Dont bother with "the step by step to make phone faster".

indeed! I've played gta and currently im playing football manager and its smooth as anything, camera as with all mobiles can be bad in poor light but tbf most situations the camera is great-hd recording as well which is perfect for me as my son is only 8 months old so lots of videos to treasure!
i can honestly say you wouldn't regret getting the s2 but take a look at some videos and see what you think, I've stayed stock up till now but maybe in the new year i may go for a custom Rom and be brave throughout my last 6 months on this contract! lol
if i didn't get the bug and itch to upgrade come upgrade time i could seriously keep this phone as my main driver for longer than the contract is up!

Bro get the S2, I promise you wont be disappointed!
Even if this phone doesn't officially get the next OS update (after JellyBean) I guarantee it will still get it in the form of unofficial ones like CyanogenMod etc. I mean it has a freaking 1.2 Ghz dual core processor! That's almost as fast as my old P4, plus it has a good GPU. It plays every game I have thrown at it perfectly.
It truly is a legend phone and one which set the bar for all other phones! I wouldn't think twice in owning another one.
I love it
I love my Galaxy S2. Perfect screen size for me, slim body, good development team, etc. I really don't think about getting the Galaxy S3 despite its good processor and such, this is because it looks like a fridge and the screen is too big.

GSG 3 users. Is it still worth buying?

Hey guys, i've recently owned an HTC One x, and i've found it to be okay, if there's one thing i liked about it over the SGS 3 it would be only the screen (or maybe not). (ATM phone is dead, screen broke, not willing to give htc 300$ just to replace the screen. They wanted 294 euros, that
Either way, what good is a screen if the overall package doesn't do the job, right?
I was originally planning to get a Nexus 4, but for some reason i have the other side of me telling em to go for the GSG 3, incredibly fast updates (as they've proven). One factor i noticed that the SGS 3 has over the Nexus 4 is battery life. I think it easily gets 1 and a half to 2 hours more screen on time if i compare both battery stats thread.(hugely favoring me in for the sgs 3)
I'm just clueless as to what I should do. The nexus 4 is not highly available atm (screw you LG) , this is another reason i don't see why i should wait.
The SGS 4 is around the corner (?)
I'm just not sure what next move i should make now? The reason i'm very desperate at the moment is because my one x is not functional at all. My SGS1 is wrecked badly (charging hardly works anymore, and i just can't take it without a decent phone >_>)
Would you guys still recommend i buy a brand new SGS 3 @ 470 Euros right now? Any reason not to? I know such threads are not very welcome to a select bunch. But regardless, i'd really appreciate some input.
Worth noting is that i don't really game on phones, if at all.
No no i don't think you should buy sgs 3 again wait for a month you well see new phones. My next phone will be xperia z or s4 but lets see what we get in mwc 2013

If your extremely stuck buy the s3 but if your not id wait because god only knows what around the corner. Htc have a few nice phhones coming out and already out aswell as that the xperia z which will be out very soon is going to beat any phone that comes out this half of the year.

If you want to use the phone as it is, it's fine buying SGS3. the stock ROM is Okay with some great features. There are many great custom kernels (Perseus, Siyah, etc.) for you to choose. The phone is ok if you don't look at the specs, battery life is good, no warm(hot) issue, play almost any games well, support most video hardware acceleration codecs and great camera.
You should consider Xperia T if you want AOSP-like(CM) experiences. As it's a great device for devs and rapidly getting more and more sick developers (codeworkx for example). You may wait another month for an Xperia Z also.
Looks to me as though many are going to be recommending I wait. If that's the case i guess i will hold out. It would be much easier if my phone didn't suck. If it dies out on me i guess i'll just buy a cheap nokia for the time being and call it a day until i get my hands on something newer.
Never was worth buying and never will be. Get yourself a 16GB Nexus 4, instead.

Theres 2 thing with waiting
1 Theres always going to be something round the corner, so you can always waiting so you can end up chasing the latest greatest phone to be. I'm looking for a phone myself, but if I'm going to wait, I'd have to draw a line somewhere.
2 The price of what those phones will be, for example the price of the sony xperia is currently rumoured to be £520 sim free for the UK, whilst it's more than likely going to change, it may still be too expensive for some, depending if someones getting it on contract or what ever.
Least with any phone out, people know what the (most of the) pro's and con's and how much it's going to cost.

That is a nice looking phone, what I really don't understand about people is they complain at phone screens breaking, then a few days later the next in thing is making a phone out of glass, which is what breaks in the first place, it boggles the mind.
I own one and I wouldn't buy another one if this one failed.
It's nice and all, but it's not that great.
