A feature I feel was most improved... - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Voice to text.
It was frustrating enough to not use it on my EVO 4G. But I sent a handful of messages flawlessly earlier with it and was pleased. I'm not sure if this version of speech recognition was used on the 3d or some other newer google phone, but I was happily surprised by the update from EVO 4G. Might be useful now !
Check it out.

Yeah, I noticed when running ICS on OG Evo that speech recognition was waaayy improved. Totally agree.

Same here as long as I have decent service..and another thing I like about it is that u can keep talking and it doesnt close..I remember in the past u had to say a few words let it think and then do it again if u had more to say

On my OG Evo I used the FlexT9 keyboard because of their superior voice recognition and swipe functionality. it was an ugly keyboard but a decent trade off. However, I do find the LTE Evo's voice recognition and swipe are top notch!

flawless
I've used it a couple times and its flawless. Couldn't use on OG EVO.

I can't stand SwiftKey X's voice implementation.
If I am dictating to my phone, chances are I don't want to look at the screen and read the 3 different recomendations that are all just slightly different - find the correct one and tap it, and probably all are passable for me quickly texting or being drunk and beligerent.
Ohhhhhhhhh and no BlueTooth support :-/

Anyone else notice the FM Radio?

Going through the user manual I came across it. App among the included apps. Needs headphones plugged in to get a signal, but can output through the speaker too. Also has RDS which is great. Nice way to keep up on local info as in local weather alerts, local sports, school closings, etc..
It was on the Evo 4G as well. Nothing new.

Except I never had the Evo 4G. New to me. My wife who upgraded from an iPhone was amazed. Half the iPhone users who I mention this to rebutt with "there are radio apps in the apps store". I point out that my local stations don't simultaneously air over the web. No, its not the killer app, but a nice surprise from my point of view.
I discovered the phone has 3D capabilities too!

I was delighted to find it was mostly black. Finally an original color for a phone!

Just switched from evo3d

I am a longtime htc fan but am finding myself impressed by this phone where the 3d wasnt giving me that umph. Call quality and signal are far better on this phone which has shown better speeds and battery life. I cant wait to see this unlocked cause im diggin it stock and cant wait to see what some devs would do to it ....

I also deactivated my EVO 3D and bought the Photon. It absolutely pulls a much better 3G and 4G signal. I get much better 3G and 4G signal strength and data stays connected unlike my EVO 3D. Phone calls and sound quality is also much better than the EVO 3D. I always get good compliments about the great call quality of this new Photon. I got bad feedback from people when i was using the EVO 3D The build quality is really amazing too. The ONLY thing i miss is HTC Sense. But I need a phone that actually works and the Photon does exactly that.

OK guys, I'm very used to the HTC IME keyboard with it's arrows and I'm having a hard time getting used to the Photon's stock keyboard. My biggest complaint is that it's cumbersome to add punctuation and symbols to my texts/emails. I have to press the number button and/or the punctuation button then search for the qyuestion mark, etc then go back to regular letters... Is there any advice you can give that might make this easier? This is driving me nuts because it takes me too long to type simple sentences. Mabe I'm doing something wrong so that's why I'm asking. I can't see how this keyboard is so good as you both claim... Thanks in advance.
Yeah people were constantly complaining about the evo3d call quality .....the ear piece sounded muffled to and the speaker was a joke. Ive gone from a touch pro to a hero to a desire then a g2 and a mytouch 4g then the evo3d. So i am very accustomed to using sense but the photon overlay isnt bad.

I use Thumb Keyboard off the market and like it a lot. I use it on my tablet and phone. It has customizable layouts for portrait and landscape and has programmable keys. It is skinnable and arrow keys are there also. It's not free but worth the purchase.

Undecided between the Photon and Evo 3d
Hello everyone! I am thinking of switching my evo for the Photon and I have a few questions.
1) I was wondering if the signal reception is much better with it as some people say? My Evo 3d barely gets a weak 4g signal inside my house and I was wondering if this phone will improve it?
2)I come from the ogEvo and I upgraded to the Evo 3d first because the sprint reoresentarltive told me that my upgrade would end on July 31, do upgrades have a deadline?
3)Another thing that she told me is that if I exchanged my evo 3d for the photon and if I want to go back to the 3d she would charge me another $35 is that right?
4)Also do you guys know if the Photon would support the upgrade of sprint's network? I have read that the evo 3d has the support for the smr upgrade or something like that. Will the Photon still get better reception if that happes?
5)Another problem that I have with the evo 3d is that whenever I plug in my headset and I get a text the notifications get played through the headphones a well a the speaker. I wonder if you guys have the same issue with the photon?
Thanks in advance!

1. Reception is way better.
2. Never heard of a upgrade deadline.
3. Call to customer support will bypass the 35.
4. No idea but it would be retarded to release a line of superphones that couldn't handle the upgrade.
5. Don't use headsets.

I just ditched my EVO 3D....I miss sense , the EVO seems a tad bit more fluid, but with my Photon calls are clearer, no drops and I get better antenna signal. You won't regret this....I also had an EVO 4G which was better call and antenna signal wise. I think Moto's screen is also much more crisp. I really wanted the Galaxy 2 but I broke my4G beyond repair.
1. Yes it is a lot better
2. Yes, what he or she was talking about is your 1 year sprint premier upgrade which ended on 07/31/11
3. Yes sprint does charge a $35 restock fee, but I don't think you will regreat going to the photon. I have both 3d and Photon and the photon is my preferred phone. I also had the evo and loved sense, and while the sense 3.0 does have a lot of nice features some of it gets annoying.
4. From what the network team has told me when sprint switches to LTE its just a simple software upgrade. But Im sure that by the time that happens I will already be on a new phone so not that much a concern for me.
5.Not sure about the noise
If you like sense use spb shell.

Can't comment much on other stuff but I can say that when I was installing the drivers for qpst that there is a driver for LTE modem that installs. So yeah it'll work fine I think.

Epic Touch vs. Photon

Last night my wife got an Epic Touch. Nice phone. But I can confirm what people have been saying about the radios. The reception on the Photon was consistently 6 to 8 dB stronger on the Photon. I downloaded the same app with both and the Photon 40 percent faster. Both phones were in the same place. Also, there are a couple of "no Sprint zones " where I'd always drop calls with my old Epic. The Photon always holds the call in that area. I know people have claimed many times that the Photon radios are better and here is a real world test that proves it. Im glad I stayed with the Photon.

you gotta love it when you can use a phone as a phone and make and hold calls.
I was very seriously considering swapping my photon for the ET4G... i mean REALLY considering it.. I loved the Epic.. it would only stand to reason that it successor would be just as bad ass right ??
Then i remember the GPS problems, the bluetooth headaches, the lack of support/updates (from samsung/sprint).. it took lots of modding and just the right ROM to make the phone a pleasure to use.. IThen I grabbed my photon and realized how good I really have it.
This thing just works. I installed SPB shell 3D, rooted it and am loving the experience. Can't wait for CM7.. that'll make the experience w/ the photon INCREDIBLE..

I own both phones and love both of them. =] The epic touch for its screen (way better then I thought it was gonna be), light weight, still pic cam, and no lag. The photon for its radio, build quality, and speakers. Both phones are great and you can't go wrong with which ever one you pick. ^^ Sprint to me is the top dog right now with high end 4g phones. Lets just hope they improve their network this coming October.

I enjoy my Photon way more than my Epic, I just think Motorola's framework is a lot more cleaner than Samsung's. One of the things that annoyed me the most about the Epic is I couldnt disable the sound of when their is a network drop/reconnect. So I would constantly hear it while listening to music going in and out of subways. With the Photon, it's just silent and there is audio interruption going on.
Also, the little things like the orientation animation is nice. Samsung's screens are of course great, but I'm glad I have a higher res screen on the Photon. The icons on the Epic Touch look huge with the lower res, but that of course is a personal preference thing. Also not having my phone be a useless brick that can only use wifi when traveling internationally is great, the world phone option is a huge plus for me.

Have had both and like the Epic Touch way better. For one thing I can hear someone when a call comes in. While the Photon had very strong signals and great sound, even with the MR it still suffered from software issues. I know everyone said to keep exchanging until you get one that works but that is not too appealing to me. I just want to get a phone and go. With the ET it has worked great from day one with no issues at all.
To be honest there are some faults that only a tech geek would nit pick about. Most people I know never seem troubled by some of the issues that posters rant and rave about. People complained about the Photon screen, really? I had to go into our tech department and use their electron microscope to see what they were talking about.
I would have to say that both phones are about equal. You can't go wrong with either one. It all comes down to which one you prefer. If you are happy with the one you purchased then that's all that really matters.
The name is kind of catchy also "MOPHO". I thought about getting the Epic Touch too, but I think there are too many things that the MOPHO has the the touch does not.. Kickstand and webtop mostly.. I just wish there was more developer interest.
i agree with the comment about having a grudge with samsung. after owning a moment i'll never own a sammy phone again. just got my photon last night and the sales person was trying to push a samsung on me. i was take your sammy and shove it lady give me the photon!

I'm getting this phone September 1st. Any issues I should be aware of?

This will be my 3rd HTC phone. Had the HTC Hero first, HTC EVO, and now I will be getting the EVO 4G LTE model sept 1st when I'm allowed to use my 2 year upgrade. I would like to know if there are any specific problems with this phone. I read a few things after it came out about the battery overheating easily, and also an issue about you losing the wifi card function thing. I really dislike the fact that the battery is built in. No way of changing it if it loses its capacity over a few years (unless you take the phone apart maybe). Are these issues still there, and are there any new ones? I will be rooting it day one of course as long whatever version I get then will be rootable at the time.

Aggravating Inappropriate Dropped Signal
The multitasking problem is the biggest flaw with the phone. Apparently some of the ROMs have improved things but I haven't rooted yet so I don't know for sure. I don't think any have fully fixed the problem (could be wrong though) Basically if you switch apps and then switch back to the original app it will reload. Very annoying and wastes a few seconds every time you switch apps. Hope it will get fixed in an OTA soon.
Otherwise it's great, the camera and screen are fantastic.

The evo is a great phone. The battery does tend to get warm during heavy usage as with all phones but it doesn't "overheat". The wifi issue some people had was due to the trash ui that is sense which was fixed during the latest ota. Since you said the you will be rooting day one the mean rom fixes the multitasking issue and does improve your battery life considerably as does boost performance. Whether you get hboot 1.15 (the latest ota) out of the box or not, you will still be able to root your just won't be able to get s- off which you don't really need to begin with. The evo is the best Android smartphone on the market Imo and you should definitely get it. I have the evo gs3 and the one x and I can safely say the evo is the best one out of the three.

You'll be impressed. The design grows on you. I used to love the One X design but as time passed, I realized the EVO just looks like a beastly powerhouse. Multitasking and possible WiFi drop issues, you're good to go. Check out some other launchers if you get bored of sense.
Had the phone since day 1 and I'm still impressed. In a way, I feel bad for people on other phones. They just don't know what they're missing out on.

If you rely on IMAP/POP or Exchange for E-mail, you'll find the HTC mail app is flawed...
The issue with rendering font sizes on HTML messages PISSES ME OFF to no end. I want to drive up to the nearest HTC office and throw this thing through their window.
HTC built a pinch-zoom feature in the mail and messaging apps. I prefer the smallest font sizes available, and the "small" setting is barely sufficient on SMS threads. E-mail is a different story as the font/size preference is completely ignored on HTML content. Not only do you have to tap to "display images" on EVERY E-mail, the text also appears ridiculously large, to the point where the message won't fit on a single screen and must be scrolled/panned.
I don't see how/why ROMs haven't addressed this issue yet and I've tried Fresh and MeanROM already. I'd like to ask them about this problem but I don't have enough posts yet to bring this up in the dev forums.
Does EVERYONE use GMail exclusively or what?

[Q] worth getting the LTE?

hey guys.
I was on board with the first Evo 4G, then got the Evo 3D, and now i'm wanting to upgrade. but i'm not feeling as excited about the LTE as I was hoping to be.
I use my phones with MetroPCS so I don't care about the LTE capabilities. is there anything going from an Evo 3D to the LTE that might leave me disatisfied? is there a better phone out there (CDMA)?
thanks.

Cheating on Post 8... HEY MOM WHERE IS THE MEAT LOAF??!!
If you're not having any issues with your EVO 3D, I'd suggest you stick with it. For me, the EVO LTE isn't much of an upgrade because of all the problems I have with it. Others may not have these problems... I dunno, but here's my list:
* It locks up and I have to reset it constantly.
* Characters or whole freakin' words disappear after they've been typed. This bugs me more than everything else.
* Multitasking is an absolute joke because the phone constantly refreshes itself when you leave an app and go to another.
* My text messages don't send or I don't receive any quite often.
* Connecting to the web is always an issue even when the phone is showing a full strength signal. I usually end up grabbing a different phone to do what I was trying to do.
* When I download stuff from the web, the content gets stored on the phone's internal storage instead of the SD card like it's supposed to.
I've had these very same issues even when my phone was bone stock. My phone is rooted now and it's running on the VIPER 4G ROM, and it STILL has the same issues. I still have and use my EVO 3D on a different line... I'm glad I didn't trade it in.

That's lame that you are having all those issues. On the last one though, you do know you can choose where things are downloaded to.

I'm sorry I don't follow. Are you suggesting the speeds I'm getting on my 3D are better than what I would get on the same service with the LTE?

I have my og evo 4g on another line and even when it is on 3g it gets much better service than my lte. For example, on my golf course the lte cant even stream pandora. The og evo never misses a beat. IMO this phone just wasnt meant for 3g.
I would agree on the battery life though, and that is about the only thing keeping from going back to the og evo all together.

I've tried adjusting every setting there is on the Dolphin browser, Google Chrome, the built-in browser and the phone settings and it still won't work right. I'm not too concerned with that issue though... it's a minor annoyance in comparison with everything else.
Stock browser, settings, advanced, download storage.?

thanks for the feedback guys.
after researching both phones, I'm going to cheat on HTC and go over to the Samsung Galaxy SIII.
more ram, bigger screen, replaceable battery (easily the most convincing argument for me since I typically buy my Seidio big batteries before the phones), and connectivity with all our existing Samsung electronics.
Let's hope I don't regret it...
The best handset I've ever had, by FAR. The LTEVO is as good as it gets... Until the new HTC hardware rolls out this Fall, of course.

Yup, that's how my phone has always been setup. I'm gonna try flashing a non-Sense ROM (if there is one) to see if it'll get rid of my issues.
Got blue (me) and white (wife) SIIIs today. They look great and are very light. Still very nervous leaving HTC but I think change every couple of years is healthy...right?

The Samsung phones are ok. I have an SII that I picked up a few months ago. The only thing I'm not too fond of with the Samsung phones are the Super AMOLED screens. They're a little too saturated with color and not bright enough for my taste.
Coming from someone who knows SPECS and performance, dont go with the Evo LTE.
Thats the phone I currently have and from looking at my signature, I have been on almost every Droid phone even the ones on the GSM side of the world.
The Evo LTE is a good phone but it does have its problems. The biggest and only real problem you will notice is the tasking. If your in a app or brower and if you leave it and try to come back to it, the phone will attemp to reload the whole app or page your on. And if your on Sprint 3G that can be a pain LOL.
If anyone on here tell you the phone is a beast or the best phone on the market, they are either fanboys of HTC devices, or plain clear dont know what there talking about. Dont get me wrong, the phone isnt bad but the phone will start to slow down as you install more and more apps and HTC Sense does take up a good portion of RAM so expect your apps to close out a lot if you back out of them.
If your on the Evo 3D, the only upgrade you will really see is in the Camera and the Display of the Screen. The screen is 720p vs the Evo 3D QHD. As for the camera, its up there with the iphone 4s in my opinion.
If you had to choose which CDMA phone to get next I would say either the Galaxy S3 for its performance, perfect tasking and SAMOLED 720p Display.
Or the Galaxy Nexus to get that pure google experience that has basicly 0 system lag with the Jelly Bean OS.
Thats my 2 cents, to me HTC failed with this phone. The tasking problem with Sprint 3G is just fail. Impatiently waiting for LTE to come to Nashville TN the music city of the country...

Lol I have only had the multi tasking problem (stock rom) now running mean rom everything is perfect except sprints 3g in hawaii but ofcourse I knew what I was getting into when trading WiMAX for 3g so I can't complain, all the other problems you have posted leads me to believe you have a defective device, if so then I'm sorry for a bad first impression.

IMO the galaxy nexus from Verizon which I am familiar with has poor cpu/gpu performance compared to the evo lte. Gaming/video playback/3d graphics really made me sad from a Samsung google device. I do get ridiculous lte here 20-40mbps, just can't play any graphics intensive games without crazy lag and battery guzzling internals. I get a full day on my lte overclocked lol and I get 6-7 hours on my veri GN stock rom.
