I was just standing outiside and noticed that I couldn't read the screen of my new Galaxy S2 which I never noticed on my Nexus S. So I compared the two in direct sunlight.
Isn't the sAMOLED+ supposed to be brighter than the original sAMOLED screen?
Is my screen less bright than other sAMOLED+ screens?
My Galaxy S 2 is definatly brighter in sunlight than my Nexus S.
although i have turned off my auto brightness and whacked it right up on both..
At brightness zero the nexus s is brighter than the galaxy s 2.
I noticed that in bright sunlight, I can't see the screen at all on my SGSG2 with it set to zero, which causes a bit of a problem upping the brightness! On the Nexus, I could see well enough to change it.
I think at full brightness though, the SGS2 is brighter. My retinas haven't recovered from accidentally setting 100% whilst reading at night.
I've been wondering whether there is a way to boost the brightness, I was going to make a topic about it.
Some reviews I've seen say they had to turn the screen down to lowest brightness as the screen is so bright, etc. however my screen is nothing special in terms of brightness really and I have it on full, with auto adjust off colours are good though.

Yes, disable auto brightness maybe

yes, I did that. the pictures are taken with both screens on 100%
I guess my screen is just not as bright as others :/
Also, under Settings -> Display, make sure that "Auto Adjust Screen power" is disabled... this option tries to save some battery by lowering the brightness when the image displayed is brighter : It can be useful in movies but it's just useless and annoying when you're browsing or reading.
PS : And SuperAMOLED+ is not supposed to be brighter than sAMOLED, it's the same without the pentile matrix. When samsung announced an improvement in battery life and brightness they were still comparing it to LCD screens from a few years ago.
thanks bluescreenjunkie, that setting actually helped (a bit).
and yes, your probably right about samsungs claims as well, I probably subconsciously interpreted samsungs claims the best way possible ... (so I had a reason to go buy it).
thanks for your input.
well it is possible to increase the brightness but it takes some development, like supercurrio did for the 2.3.3 kernel for the nexus s and cm7 sgs1 kernel with the voodoo app.
Dont know if hes gonna do the same for the sgs2, i really like it on my sgs1 for sure.
he increased the brightness? well that explaines it then (as it's running a voodoo kernel) .
Side by side, looking at the same web page (or any screen), at the same brightness setting, the screen on my Captivate is noticebly brighter than the screen on my SGS II. WTF Has anyone else noticed this or compared? I'm interested to see if this is happening to anyone else.
Mine at full brightness is almost the same, with the Captivate slightly brighter. Honestly though the color rendering is a lot better on the SGS2 than on the Captivate, and less brightness is probably part of that change.
I agree with the color rendering and overall display being better. I was just surprised at first.

It is not as bright as the Captivate, but the display is so much better. I do like that is much dimmer if the room is dark. My captivate hurt my eyes at night, even with the display set to the lowest it would go.
I have heard people say the pentile screens make edges look jagged etc. Is this true? I mean at something like 280+ppi I wouldn't think it would look jagged at all! Is it true?
It varies by device. I've not used a Note, but it should be similar to a Galaxy Nexus. The colors are visibly greener than the Super AMOLED+ (non-pentile) displays I've used, but the Nexus at least does not have the jagged edge issues that appear on the RAZR and some of the other qHD displays I've used. I don't know if it's because of the higher resolution/pixel density or some other property of the subpixel matrix, but I've never heard that particular criticism of a Note.
Not at this PPI.

Agreed, only of you zoom in super super close on text.

Also something to keep in mind is that pentile offers better outdoor performance and battery life

For the same reason people say it looks "bad" because it has less sub pixels so it will use less power. Though at this pixel density you would have to have a microscope because on my captivate you would have to be viewing red on black and be obnoxiously close to see it. Also it has better outdoor visibility because it can I believe get brighter then non pentile displays. For more info Google is amazing.
I have PenTile on my Photon 4G and while I can certainly see it, it doesn't bother me. When the brightness is turned way up you notice it more. I agree that at 1280x800 on a 5.3" display you're not going to notice it.
As others noted, PenTile RGBW has the advantage of offering more brightness for less power (due to the "W", I believe?) but it depends on the screen. The Droid 4 is PenTile, yet it is significantly darker than my Photon 4G (also PenTile) - both are Moto phones, so I was surprised by that difference. The Photon has the brightest, most outdoor-readable display (non-reflective) I have ever seen.
I can't recall reading anything other than "awesome" to describe the Note screen, though, so I think there's nothing to worry about here.

The brightness of a LCD screen (almost all Moto Droid phones are PenTile LCD) is determined by the backlite light source, not the screen pixel layout. To LCD screens, the power usage is constant regardless of the screen pixels on of off unless you can also turn the backlite light down.
AMOLED doesn't have a backlite light source. It depends on each pixels to emit light itself.
Yeah, I forgot that there are multiple PenTile layouts. Most Moto phones are RGBW, while the Note screen is RGBG, so it doesn't have the same outdoor visibility/brightness advantage.
Hi,
Concerned that the SIII's max brightness is much dimmer than competing phones. Iphone 4, 4s, HTC One x, are all about 500 nits.
The SIII's is only around 330.
Is this an issue?
I do like bright screens, and I suspect that the dominant reason for the battery life being better on the SIII is simply that the screen isn't as bright.
Thanks

Yes, the colour contrast makes the phone brighter than original, due to the Amoled screen. You won't really notice a difference unless you compare them side by side in a dark room.
Man i can't look at the screen at full brightness it's too bright and only use when outside in sun. Normally keep it half or slightly more. However i found auto to be not too effective as it makes screen too dim.

With CM/AOKP you can change the auto values so its not too dim
Keep it Classy, Cali.

Really? I use cm. How can I change that?
Hi, i have a problem with the display brightness on Razr Maxx. I have set the brightness level to zero, on Maxx and Atrix, and this is the result: http://i.imgur.com/9b1j9.jpg
It's normal that the Maxx have this difference? The display is too dark.
I would rather be able to go darker like the maxx. The problem may be with the ATRIX.

Atrix has an lcd screen and brightness with lcd's are higher than amoled displays.
Yes, but the brightness on the Maxx is too dark. Also your Razr have this brightness? Can you post a photo of your Razr with brightness set to zero?
I don't know if this a problem of my phone.
Thank you so much guy :good:

It's not a problem with your phone. The Atrix can't go that depp as the backlight can dim any more. The individually lit SAMOLEDs of the RAZR can go much deeper then LCD.
If it's too dim on the lowest setting, which I only use in completely dark rooms, then don't use zero brightness. Turn it up, or use automatic adjustment.
Keep in mind that 100% brightness on RAZR (AMOLEDS in general) is just about egual to 50% that of the very bright Atrix.
Ok. Thanks FlipMorten.
Just compared my razr and atrix. The picture here is exactly same as yours. It is nice to see Atrix's lcd produce better visual experience under some circumstances. Razr's color are great though. So you decide. Brighten up the Razr, its screen is great for pretty much everything, colors are true and vivid. Videos are great. Atrix's lcd is better for reading, it produces sharper text and images with more ppi 275, pentile is not as visible as razr. However i prefer razr's screen anytime.
I put a matte screen protector on my RAZR, with that on there, you can't see the pentile effect.
