Exchanging Rooted EvoLte at Best Buy - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Well, just bricked my NFC somehow after flashing a Rom and I guess something didn't reset even tho I cleared out google wallet, precautions, etc.
That's neither here nor there tho. I just want to know if anyone has had trouble exchanging a rooted phone at best buy?
Please give me some suggestions. While google wallet is pretty much a gimmick, I like to be able to have the gimmick. Lol. But if I am stuck with the phone then that's okay too.
Edit: I'm still within 14 days of buying the phone...

If the sales associate at best buy even knows how to get into recovery I'd be surprised..

Does it brick the NFC function or just google wallet ?

BTW, how can I test my NFC myself? I don't think it's broken, I have no reason to believe it is, but how would I go about testing it from the comfort of my own home?

NFC secure element not responding. So basically just google wallet is broke as beam will still work. Neither feature is a necessity for me, but I put $ on the card.
Also have WiFi disconnecting like crazy too, so kinda want to exchange it for that since I'm still within 14 days.
What u guys think?

How do you know if you bricked it. I got my prepaid card and flashed another Rom and forgot to reset wallet . Now all wallet does is hang at the activating screen. I just got off the phone with a google rep and he said if I got to the activating part then more that likely your not bricked. He said it won't let you in the app if secure element is bricked . He did say if you got the secure element message than you'll need to replace your phone

I work at BBYM I could careless if a phone was rooted if a basic feature of the phone was broke. Shouldn't have a problem. And like another user said, some people don't even know what recovery is....
Btw you have 30 days to exchange the phone. 14 days to return and get your upgrade back.

Messing up my secure element has worried me too. I accidentally ran regaws root method and didn't reset google wallet, though it didn't brick it for some reason. I am lucky.
Are you getting the secure element message? If not, then you're good and you just need to do the fix that is found in the dev subforum here. I've done it twice and it works. You have to do it after any flash of a Rom.
Also, I really don't get the "im too good for wallet" attitude. I have used it and its very cool! I paid for gas at Sheetz right at the gas pump. Didn't go inside, didn't have to key in debt stuff. And it isn't a gimmick. A gimmick is something rather useless and wallet is something I find useful for me personally. Also, when the iPhone adopts NFC technology and all the Apple zombies begin using it, the popularity will move faster.

This, unfortunately, is true. Except first Apple will announce it as iPay or something so they'll all think it was their idea, and probably sue Google over it as well.

My phone is perfect and if I screwed up wallet I wouldn't bother taking my phone back. From what I read Google isn't even going to support our phones anymore anyways. Unless you have a supported Citicard, I think its dumb to use a credit card just to fund Wallet to then be limited to were you could use it. Wallet is pointless and useless and those who break it won't be missing out on much.

just lock it and ruu the phone or whatever is needed to get rid of that red text on the splash screen and hope for the best. If they are smart enough to boot into the bootloader they are doing it to try to deny a warranty, no other reason to go into it.
I'm not sure if BB even has a policy on that since the unlocking the bootloader thing is your warranty through HTC that is being affected.
Also, if you have never used google wallet I assume you don't have to reset it or whatever when you reflash do you? I have never used it so I never worried about resetting it. I wouldn't care if it didn't work though since I will never use google wallet for anything but maybe trying to get the free money that's on there.

Ok when does the secure element message popup ? When you trying to open the app or when you try to make a purchase?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

I exchanged mine the other day at BB for the same reason. The manager reset it a couple times and then just did a swap for a new one. Didn't boot into recovery that I could see, but I was sure to remove root, relock the bootloader & run the RUU first.

NFC isn't working on our devices unless you download a Kernel that supports it. It's still iffy even then. Even though we have it on our phones, it's not active. It looks like ATT holds the key to open it for all. Entropy has gotten it work on his device and released the kernel to utilize it although I can't get it to work on mine.

I am able to scan anything that's nfc capable, but since there are no apps available yet, you're right.. there's not much use for it. Frankly i'm surprised that the chip is activated in our phones (on certain roms) but theres no app available to do anything other than simple nfc diagnostics. I guess it comes down to the 'secure element' that has to be enabled before we can actually store any nfc-related info on our devices. As it stands, I have two NFC capable phones, with no NFC capabilities Sometimes being on the cutting edge can be frustrating I guess..

[Q] Does Verizon care if you root?

At some point this summer I plan on buying a new phone, likely an iPhone. My Samsung is currently running Cyanogenmod and the UI blatantly looks much different than a stock phone.
I'm guessing the answer to all this is they won't care, but if you bring in your rooted/customized phone and the people at Verizon are transferring data or anything from that phone to a new phone or otherwise messing with your rooted phone that works fine, do they care if they notice your phone is rooted? Does it violate any terms relating to your overall contract, or does anyone have any experience with them giving you a lecture about not doing that?
I'm not sure if we are violating our contracts... but I can tell you that the last time I was in my local Verizon store, 3 out of the 4 employees I talked to were running rooted phones. If you are nervous, just Odin back to stock before you go in.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA
it's in no way a violation of the contract. Android is all open source so you can do what you want. Most people think it's pretty cool if you have a rooted/rommed phone, although I'm sure a few Verizon people frown upon it. If you bought the phone it's yours, you can do what you want lol

You may not be doing anything legally askew, but Verizon is under no obligation to provide any support whatsoever if the phone isn't running the carrier software.

They wouldn't be supporting it. They'd be transferring his account to a new phone, which means he's going to give them money which they usually like. If he was coming in for a repair then they wouldn't. You won't have any problem.

He was asking if he'd have any trouble with them transferring data like contacts to a new device. If the new device is an android, pretty much everything including contacts is backed up on Google servers so no problem, but if he gets an iPhone like he mentioned, I'm not sure how they would transfer contact data. But that's something it might be helpful to be back on the stock software for. Just my two cents, like I said I don't know how that data transfer between a fascinate and iOS device would go.

That's what I thought too, but didn't know if that app comes on iPhones. I thought they came free of any carrier software, which is something I've gotta give Apple credit for. Although knowing how simple they make iOS devices for technologically unsavvy people, I've gotta think there's a pretty simple way to get your contacts.
I'm not really sure what you'd need Verizon for when getting a new device either, the only thing I can think of is getting your sim card for an LTE device.

I'm 100% sure. I tried everything (Reflashed Roms, Tried various Keyboards, Unrooted, and still nothing...) the first time it happened to me. You'll notice if you go into landscape mode in the messaging app it'll work fine. The screen has deadspots on it. You have to call them and they will send you another one "next day" air and within that package, besides the "new" phone, they'll be return labels. Just unroot your device factory reset everything and ship it back.
I will call. use my phone for work everyday though and have to have it for work... Can I go to a store instead and get one you think?
Sent from my HTC ThunderBolt using XDA
You can try, but not sure that they'll come thru for ya. Best bet would be to hang in there until you have a day or two off then call so it doesn't impact your employment. And in the meantime use the phone in landscape mode for what you need it for.

Anyone else have phantom screen presses?

Anyone else having instances where their phone starts doing stuff by itself when the screen is on? I use the SHOW TOUCHES option in developer options and it shows the screen registering multiple touches all over the screen when I'm not touching it. Started happening recently, which is odd because nothing has changed. Phone is stock.
Do you have a case on the phone? Might be dirt, debris, or moisture between the case and the screen. Remove case, clean the case edges and edge of the screen.

Sounds similar to the issue some people were having with the E4GT. I know my wife's previous phone (E4GT) had issues with the menu opening on its own and it didn't matter whether or not she had a case on it. First I've heard of this issue on the EVO LTE.

Usually that means the digitizer is going bad (assuming there is no liquid damage inside your phone).I would try a hard reset first and if that doesn't work take it to a S&R center.
If you take it to a Sprint Service and Repair center and you are paying for ESRP or TEP on your monthly bill, then they will replace the display or your phone for free. If you're not paying for ESRP or TEP, a corporate store will charge you $35 to fix or replace it, a third party store will usually charge you $35 plus the price of the part.

From what I've read, your symptom of phantom screen presses may be a sign of some form of malware on your phone. I would suggest taking a close look at the apps running. I'm not sure however what tools would be useful to discover the culprit. A factory reset would, obviously, clear the problem item. Good luck!
Wow theres quite a bit of respsonses... Nonetheless, I am almost certain that you are having a kernel issue. Which then translates to a voltage/ground issue.
As some people stated, the OG Evo did have some problems with voltages. IE, on my Evo OG, I would sometimes not be able to pull down the menu (happened to ALOT of people not just me), and i decided to run a wire from the battery terminal (on the ground). After doing this, i had an exposed wire hanging out. Now the problem would still persist, i couldnt bring down the menu. However, if i TOUCHED the wire, my menu bar would work just fine. Once I stopped touching the wire (ungrounded) the menu bar would not work.
A little while after that, there was a kernel with tweaked voltages. I flashed this kernel, and my menu bar ALWAYS worked fine (without the wire trick)... Pretty sure it was one of Chad.Goodman's kernels.
Needless to say, a little while after, HTC released an update with an updated kernel, and no one ever had that problem again.
Take my advice, root your phone (it is much safer, secure, and private to have a rooted phone than not, but I won't get into the specifics here). After having rooted it, flash the AwesomeSauce 2.3 kernel (its over at themikmik forums). You won't need to S-OFF you can just use the S-ON installer. I would recommend using the lowest overclockable ( 1.7ghz)
If, after this, your phone still has the problem, your phone is defective. In which case, you can RUU it, and it will be back to stock. Either way, Sprint does not care about you being rooted. The only thing they CAN do is tell you that rooting your phone is not recommended, and they will flash your phone back to stock. So you do not have to worry about rooting.
Thanks. I'm familiar with rooting. Just dislike dealing with bugs and/or missing stuff now that im too busy to keep track of them. To me, this looks like a hardware issue (like someone mentioned with the ground). Going to hard reset this weekend and monitor. I can't find a good way to reproduce it at will for tep replacement yet.

Ok, I'm pretty sure this is a hardware failure, given that now the touchscreen doesn't work in the middle either. FUN!

It works on custom roms, just not roms with touchwiz. So the hardware is there. It's lacking development. And if you turn off nfc you can't get hacked. Idk why anyone would leave nfc on all the time. It has a small drain on the battery and I rarely bump info to friends. I rarely carry my wallet because it's bulky and you could be pick pocketed just as easier than being hacked. It would be handy to tap a widget enabling nfc, tap my phone for payment, then turn off nfc. You could steal my phone, but by the time you would be able to crack my screen lock, it would be remotely wiped. Try remote wiping your wallet that was just pick pocketed!

It may work with some ROMs, but not the way it was intended. The secure element is needed to protect and encrypt certain data. So no, technically the hardware is NOT there. Its not about making the software work. And you don't need nfc to steal that data, nor does one need to steal the phone. Hacking the software defeats the purpose of protecting the data. Tbe secure element is a physical hardware safe zone for card data. ..and the note does not have one. There is rumor of a SIM based secure element coming out, but I'm sure by the time it does I will have moved on to the Note 3 And on a final note, if you use a hackware APK to make wallet work, you might as well post your card info on facebook for the world to see...eventually somebody WILL compromise your card

I appreciate your knowledge and that you're sharing with me. So you're saying my note with stock firmware is not secure and I should not put any credit info on it? If that's true then anyone whoever bought an app from the playstore is compromised.

The U.S. version of Samsung Wallet doesn’t appear to support credit cards and mobile payments at this time. The Korean version of theSamsung Wallet app allows users to add credit cards*for faster online payments, though it doesn’t appear that these cards can link up to the NFC chip to make mobile payments at a brick and mortar retailer. In the U.S. version of Samsung Wallet, there are no options for mobile payments, possibly due to the various carrier agreements that prevent Google Wallet from working on the most popular devices, including the latest Samsung devices.Users who want to try Samsung Wallet on the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 and other Samsung devices in the U.S. can open Samsung Apps on their device. Search for Samsung Wallet and then choose install. The app will show up in the app*launcher*just like apps downloaded through Google Play.

Ah but your credit info is secure on the merchant's end ( or at least theoretically supposed to be lmao) See, when you make purchases where enter your card information, the merchant's server both secures and encrypts that data, theoretcially keeping it safe. When you something lile google wallet, the data has to protected from the start i.e. on your phone. The only way to do so is with the secure element, which is like a little island, heavily guarded, and only when the proper handshake is given can it be accessed. The reason for this is unlike purchases over the net that utilize a cloud system for secure info is that the phone itself must store this info so it can communicate through NFC to the recipient device. And the only way to SECURELY do so is the secure element. Can it be done without it? Absolutely. Should it be? Absolutely not. You must consider the merchants take on this. What merchant would want to partake in an unsecure payment system? Being as that eventually it comes out of their pocket when fraud occurs...none. Hence the primary reason that carriers don't want to allow G Wallet use on devices not containing a secure element (that, and the fact want to get in on the money making themselves). I work in the financial industry, so I promise you don't want to use a hacked APK. Not because the individual that hacked it has done anything, but because the hacked APK has been modified to not require the secure element, and that card data now sits vulnerable on a device/sd card...

Also thought I'd point out that G Wallet and Samsung Wallet DO work on S3 S4 and Note 2 because they contain the secure element

Samsung wallet is available through the Samsung App Store, but its not a mobile payment system. It's more like Apple's passport.
