Anyone else having instances where their phone starts doing stuff by itself when the screen is on? I use the SHOW TOUCHES option in developer options and it shows the screen registering multiple touches all over the screen when I'm not touching it. Started happening recently, which is odd because nothing has changed. Phone is stock.
Do you have a case on the phone? Might be dirt, debris, or moisture between the case and the screen. Remove case, clean the case edges and edge of the screen.

Sounds similar to the issue some people were having with the E4GT. I know my wife's previous phone (E4GT) had issues with the menu opening on its own and it didn't matter whether or not she had a case on it. First I've heard of this issue on the EVO LTE.

Usually that means the digitizer is going bad (assuming there is no liquid damage inside your phone).I would try a hard reset first and if that doesn't work take it to a S&R center.
If you take it to a Sprint Service and Repair center and you are paying for ESRP or TEP on your monthly bill, then they will replace the display or your phone for free. If you're not paying for ESRP or TEP, a corporate store will charge you $35 to fix or replace it, a third party store will usually charge you $35 plus the price of the part.

From what I've read, your symptom of phantom screen presses may be a sign of some form of malware on your phone. I would suggest taking a close look at the apps running. I'm not sure however what tools would be useful to discover the culprit. A factory reset would, obviously, clear the problem item. Good luck!
Wow theres quite a bit of respsonses... Nonetheless, I am almost certain that you are having a kernel issue. Which then translates to a voltage/ground issue.
As some people stated, the OG Evo did have some problems with voltages. IE, on my Evo OG, I would sometimes not be able to pull down the menu (happened to ALOT of people not just me), and i decided to run a wire from the battery terminal (on the ground). After doing this, i had an exposed wire hanging out. Now the problem would still persist, i couldnt bring down the menu. However, if i TOUCHED the wire, my menu bar would work just fine. Once I stopped touching the wire (ungrounded) the menu bar would not work.
A little while after that, there was a kernel with tweaked voltages. I flashed this kernel, and my menu bar ALWAYS worked fine (without the wire trick)... Pretty sure it was one of Chad.Goodman's kernels.
Needless to say, a little while after, HTC released an update with an updated kernel, and no one ever had that problem again.
Take my advice, root your phone (it is much safer, secure, and private to have a rooted phone than not, but I won't get into the specifics here). After having rooted it, flash the AwesomeSauce 2.3 kernel (its over at themikmik forums). You won't need to S-OFF you can just use the S-ON installer. I would recommend using the lowest overclockable ( 1.7ghz)
If, after this, your phone still has the problem, your phone is defective. In which case, you can RUU it, and it will be back to stock. Either way, Sprint does not care about you being rooted. The only thing they CAN do is tell you that rooting your phone is not recommended, and they will flash your phone back to stock. So you do not have to worry about rooting.
Thanks. I'm familiar with rooting. Just dislike dealing with bugs and/or missing stuff now that im too busy to keep track of them. To me, this looks like a hardware issue (like someone mentioned with the ground). Going to hard reset this weekend and monitor. I can't find a good way to reproduce it at will for tep replacement yet.

Ok, I'm pretty sure this is a hardware failure, given that now the touchscreen doesn't work in the middle either. FUN!

Hi all,
Couldn't find a thread about this, sorry if it exists.
My EVO 3D has been experiencing what can best be described as phantom touches. I leave the phone alone with the screen on and it moves the home screens in a jittery fashion or randomly presses the screen. Approx middle, slightly to the left just below the centre of the screen and also closer to the home/menu soft keys. It's not a permanent issue, but it does go absolutely "mental" at times making the phone unusable until it settles down.
It also interferes with the lock screen, playing havoc with the pattern unlock.
Tried all the usual... factory reset etc etc but to no avail.
Has anybody else come across this?

I've had mine do that albeit, rarely. He home screen goes sporadic or the app drawer scrolling is messed up.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
It used to do that for me when I had it plugged in to my car.
Video record it! Then take it to the sprint store and say that you're scared of your phone and get a new one. If it can work for my neighbor, it can work for you! âīšâ
Mine does this horribly when my phone is in cold air. My last 3d also had this issue and it was replaced when installing a new digitizer did not help.
It's getting more frequent.
I'm in the UK.. I'd have to be REALLY scared of it to go to Sprint in the US

Lol Yeah, that would be a long trip. You ever thought about rooting it and installing a new ROM?
My Atrix does that when I set it down in certain surfaces, like a mattress out pillow, or carpet, but as long as I am touching the case of the phone, it doesn't do that.

Mine doesn't do that but there are times when I unlock it and it automagically goes to what ever app is in the lower right side of the screen. My wifes has started doing it also. Even replacements that I have gotten have done it.
i actually just had mine swapped out for the same reason.
did it on ICS, MIUI, and warm.
I say take a chance at running the newer OTA update combo pack that Xhausx put out. It does include some sorry of touch panel firmware update I believe. It's worth a shot just for the hell of it.

Likewise. After a month of having my Evo 3D, the screen would act possessed. No matter what I flashed or did, nothing would make the slightest difference. It got so bad that I ended up returning it.
OP, return it. It's a common issue with these phones.
SAME PROBLEM! i have flashed viper, synergy, olympus, warm, and more im sure! Same problem every time ! Please let me know if anyone finds a fix without returning the phone! THANK YOU!
It is a hardware problem, changing the ROM isn't going to help.
My d1 did the same thing after a year or so. It actually still works as long as you can keep the phone at a certain temp, but as soon as it warms up from use it goes back to it.
My girlfriends started doing that today
downloaded touchscreen tester from the market and what do you know digitizer is jacked some spots show as multitouch with only one finger
ok that helps. so, do i have to actually return the phone to fix the problem? or can i get a touchscreen tester and find the problem and fix it? or is that not even worth the trouble?
Thanks for the help
Oddly I just started encountering the same issue two days ago and now can barely use this phone.
Bit of an update.
I did S-On and so far haven't had the issue reappear. Obviously since it is an intermittent problem, it's not definitely gone.
I'll give it a day or so and report back.

+1 on this.
Now I know it's not me being crazy. I've always had random apps opening up after preforming an action even though I was sure I never touched that app.
"i", "j", and "n" keys on virtual keyboard do not work...wtf?!
My i, j and n keys are not working on my phone. I have tried 3 different keyboards and have tried typing in multiple apps and they are not working. I have tried restarting phone as well. Its like that thin vertical strip of those 3 keys of my screen is not working..
WTF?!?! Any ideas?????
It's a known hardware issue that Verizon is well aware of. It's happened to me twice (on my 3rd Bolt) and they will replace it for free. All you have to do is call 611 and get a rep on the phone. Sucks...I know!

I'm 100% sure. I tried everything (Reflashed Roms, Tried various Keyboards, Unrooted, and still nothing...) the first time it happened to me. You'll notice if you go into landscape mode in the messaging app it'll work fine. The screen has deadspots on it. You have to call them and they will send you another one "next day" air and within that package, besides the "new" phone, they'll be return labels. Just unroot your device factory reset everything and ship it back.
I will call. use my phone for work everyday though and have to have it for work... Can I go to a store instead and get one you think?
Sent from my HTC ThunderBolt using XDA
You can try, but not sure that they'll come thru for ya. Best bet would be to hang in there until you have a day or two off then call so it doesn't impact your employment. And in the meantime use the phone in landscape mode for what you need it for.
Called customer service and this issue was not in there database. landscape mode isn't much better at all. If I go to store I have to unroot

So I recently had my HTC Amaze swapped out by T-Mobile because of a faulty headphone jack, and I feel that my experience may convince others to do the same if you're having problems.
Old Amaze:
Headphone problems, constantly screwing up.
Squeaky battery cover (or so it seemed)
Light bled through the side of phone (there was what looked like a faulty glue seal on the side)
Volume up button always looked "pushed in"
New Amaze:
Headphones work perfect
Battery cover doesn't squeak (thank god)
No more light bleeding problem.
Volume buttons look normal
I'm not sure if the device is refurbed or not, but I really don't care. This one works and that's good enough for me. I simply called T-Mobile, explained my problems to the representative, and they had a replacement shipped to my house within 4 days. The only problem is that you're supposed to pay $20 for a warranty exchange, but after some very polite conversation I managed to get her to drop it to $10. It didn't come with a back cover, but it seems that the new unit literally fixed all my problems. I recommend that if you need to get your device replaced, do it now, as it isn't a very difficult process and they are very friendly (as usual) every step of the way.
This is a HUGE step up from AT&T's "this is clearly your fault" policies. I'm so glad I switched carriers.
Just my 2cents.
I had issues with the Sensation 4g and after 8 replacements they sent me a brand new Amaze 4g. I've had it for a week and so far so good, only one small flaw is the bezel on the lower bottom bleeds a tiny bit of light.

OP, when you mention "squeaky battery cover" is it when you press on the back cover it squeaks or there's a bit of give?
I'm finding that's the issue w/ my current amaze. I press on the back cover at a specific place and it kinda "clicks". Not sure if I should request a new back cover (if that'll fix the problem).

Here's a little background on my situation. I've had the same EVO since launch day. Just recently one of my capacitive button lights has been going out. It's the back button to be exact. The light is noticeably dimmer than all the rest. If I tap that corner on a table it will turn back on to normal brightness but it eventually goes back to being dim. I was wondering if anyone here knew if I could just take it to the sprint store to get a replacement phone or if I would have to go through the insurance company?
