[Q] Question with regards to S3 Toolkit - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, have been reading the xda forums for awhile now. but it seems i can't post in the s3 developer's thread so I would have to ask it here.
I wish to root my s3 and this is my first time doing it. I have downloaded the S3 toolkit and have installed it. Upon opening it, I chose option 1 to install the USB drivers. After that, I observed that there is a serial under the ADB mode which means that the device is detected.
However, when i try to choose option 2 and follow the instructions, odin does not recognize my phone. Is there any way that I may have done it wrongly? I have selected USB debugging mode for the phone.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have Kies running as well? Ensure you close out Kies and kill the process in windows as well.

I did not install Kies. Any other steps that I may be missing out?

I managed to rectify the problem by changing the usb port that i plugged into

The GSM part simply refers to the type of network the device works on. Currently the only S3 models available are GSM but America will be launching the S3 soon on LTE networks and a different hardware configuration.
GSM models have been sold throughout Europe so if you have an S3 now it will be supported by the ToolKit. When LTE devices are launched I will add compatability for those users too.

Sometimes just unplugging/replugging the usb cable is enough to fix any connection problems

I wasn't sure if there were S3 models that only had GSM and not 3G which of course doesn't make sense...

[FIXED] Help With Reception on Galaxy S2 i9100-T (TELSTRA AU VERSION)

Guys i have a Telstra Galaxy S II and when you put a optus simcard the 3G reception is very poor.
I have seen this thread with the same issue: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1753318 but no solution?
iPhone 4 gets 4 full 3G bars where the Galaxy cant even maintain 1 bar...
However if you put a Telstra or Vodafone sim it works like a charm..
Please help
So far I have tried flashing different modems and firmwares from xda and still the issue can not be fixed :'(
- Today I got my mate to bring his phone (Galaxy S2 Optus version) and he has the optus version and works like a charm with 4 bars of 3G ....
I don't want to sell this so early
Remarks:
Optus works on 900/2100mhz
Telstra works on 850/2100mhz
Voda works on 850/900/2100mhz
I'm having a similar issue -- just got a I9100T (Telstra branded), and put in an Optus carrier SIM; data speeds are awful.

Put your phone into Download mode by:
Download this modem: http://www.multiupload.com/TWC0R29SEQ
1) Powering down the device.
2) Then you will power up the device like this by: pressing and holding the volume down key + home key + power key until you see the Galaxy Logo ( if you press for too long the device might power down again lol).
3) Enter the download mode by single pressing the Volume Up key.
4) Get Odin3 v1.85 ( from http://www.mediafire.com/?txgeoaik38pr7cq ) and open the program.
5) DO NOT TOUCH OR USE THIS PROGRAM UNLESS YOU DO AS I SAY OR RISK KILLING YOUR DEVICE
5) Click on the "phone" button and choose the download modem.bin file from where ever you have downloaded.
6) Press start and let the program flash the modem.bin file, the phone will restart and you will have full 3G.
If you found this helpful please use the thanks button.

Thanks very much.
Do I have to flash anything else along with the modem.bin file? Is those instructions assuming that the the ROM is already flashed with something else? (Which ROM are you using?)
When I compared the MD5 for this, I see this is the modem.bin for Vodafone's stock firmware (I9100TDUKF4), not the stock Telstra firmware (I9100TDVKF2). But it's working well for you?
You dont have to flash nothing else apart from the modem file...
The modem will work with any aus stock firmware
I have tried well over 8+ modems and the one uploaded above is the only one that works with 9100T on non 850mhz bands
I use kh3 with no issues on both networks

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but....
Hey guys,
I've got an SGS2 i9100T on Vodadone and after flashing different firmwares and custom roms etc, I can't seem to get good reception on the phone anymore.
I've tried literally everything, you name it, I've done it.
- different modems (yes, I've tried the i9100TDUKF4)
- MMI code to change open bands
- flashing back to complete stock Vodafone firmware
I don't know what do anymore, I'm considering selling the phone and buying a generic
i9100 without the damn 'T' at the end of it lol. 'Least then I can use new firmwares and modems without the terrible reception.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks,

Hey, Thanks heaps for that...
I'll try this one too..
I DL'd the whole I9100T Voda firmware to get it this morning..
First 30 Mins were good.... Didn't last long tho....
I am going to sell this phone to a guy with a Telstra Prepaid sim...
As least it will useable for him...
So much for beleiving there is no difference tween a 9100 and a 9100T..
Its just sourcing another 9100 for the same dough that will be the problem.
Anyone in brisbane with a USB Jiggy to reset my counter.....
Currently at 51..... 9100T are poo for optus/optusresellers...
I am in the opposite boat to you guys. I have a generic i9100 running on Telstra-.I have tried every modem, different roms, putting the Telstra stock i9100t firmware on (which worked flawlessly, but no change in signal strength) and still the same average reception.
I'm not concerned about data, but I get call drops and breaking up in half of my house-.I hear them perfectly, but the other party hears me breaking up or can't hear me at all....
I am strongly considering trading for an iphone 4, or something with better signal strength....(I have seen iphones work in my house fine).
Are any of you guys in sydney? It would be great to check if an i9100t actually has something different in the hardware to improve reception on their network...maybe we could trade.
I love this phone, but ths issue is proving more than annoying.... It works fine with an htc desire, and my old defy.
I am in the inner west of sydney, pm me if you want to look at testing our different hardware out.
Thank YOU!!!
WOW Thank you sooooo much!!!!
This has been a problem for SOOO long!
Now it's not
Tried DUKF4, KI3, still bad signal.................
I'm with voda, in North shore...

japclev, I have not attempted to use QPST yet. I have a link in my signature with the processes that I have used in the past for past phones. Might be some helpful info there. If and When I get a chance to try this on this phone I will post up about it. Until then I am not 100% sure it will work.
Unfortunately, I have been through all the steps and have had it working for Evo 3D. I would like to know if anyone has had QPST working for the new EVO Lte which unless I'm doing something wrong, doesn't recognize the old HTC Diag drivers.

Thanks for this, I was looking to increase the loudness of my evo lte using qpst and this build worked for me while the others did not. Really appreciated you sticking with this thread and updating.
Thanks so much!
Thank you japclev for the suggestion of what build to use!!! I was getting the connection error and could not figure out anything wrong with my setup!
I too had to select a generic device to use (I picked one that didn't have M.IP configuration at first, but upon selecting a "better" model it worked).
Build 264 it is, from now on, to use with my Evo LTE!
God bless!!

[Q] New XT910 GSM user, where to start?

Hi guys,
I just bought Motorola Razr XT910 GSM and i was looking for simple guide on rooting/installing custom ROMs but with no success.
Infos about my phone are:
System version:
672.180.41.XT910.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU
Baseband version:
U_04.10.00R
Build number:
6.7.2-180_SPU-19-TA-11.6
I was wondering what is the simplest way (step by step guide would be nice) to install leaked OTA 4.1.2 ?
Is that version stable with GSM patch?
Currently i have clean stock ICS 4.0.4 on it. No root no nothing.
Just to mention i'm linux user, if there is a way to root and install 4.1.2 from linux that would be good if not i'll find some windows machine to do that!
Thanks

Forgot smt: With BMM you can also flash kernels and basebands and you can find it at play store.
I recommend Chinese baseband for EU devices. Better radio and battery life

Is anyone else facing this problem , has plagued me since my 2.3.6 days. And since your phone is new, thought I'd ask.
The screen picks up all sorts of mis-correct inputs when pugged into the AC mains, especially noticeable when texting in any app. This happends to a lesser extent when using the USB port. Had this phone for 6 months now. Am using the OG charger of course. Strange one may think but is this a general widespread problem ? This is the only problem holding me back from rooting and getting the JB ball rolling. BTW, had 2 razr's so I have two AC adaptors. Tried both.
If this is a digitizer problem as someone did indicate once somewhere, I'm regret ever having bought this phone. Have had to refrain from using it while charging. And if so, am going to push for a different device. Didn't buy a dysfunctional phone, for sure
Service Center means a LOT of downtime and I cannot even backup app data as I haven't root. Can anyone help me here?
Thanks !
PS :
Here's claims to back me up. If so, has anyone successfully replaced their product ? I wouldn't mind an HD given that I did pay full RRP.
for no reason my Razr will suddenly start going crazy. Random buttons will be pressed on the screen like someone is trying to hack into it (but I know they are not). Because of the random key presses, apps will open and close super fast. The only way to stop it is to power down and power it back up. Which after I do that, it's fine

Researched the issue months ago and learned there seems to be an issue with the digitizer (that's the piece of glass and components that identify your swipes). I thought it was only with certain earlier versions of the Droid, so am disappointed to hear you're having trouble with the Razr. Some folks have reported sending it back to Motorola, and $200 later, it's fixed. While early sufferers were Motorola users, I just read a post where someone is having the same issue with an HTC Eris...
I suggest returning your phone for a new one

I had same issue when i plug it in wall cord, i cant click on anything precise, its the charger, i use one that came with my nexus 7 and have no trouble using phone while charging. I didnt test it on USB port, but im sure its charger problem. Try another charger!
I havent bought my phone new, its used one but in perfect condition!
Also i should have mention that i had same problem with Galaxy I7500 (first samsung galaxy device, not the tablet its phone) couple years ago and also with Galaxy S3 (my brothers phone). Same problems occured when using some chargers. Try swaping chareges until you find one that fits
Maybe i'm wrong but thats what helped me.

I hope not. Don't see why a 5.2V device needs grounding. And if anything .. the screen is glass.. It's capacitive in nature to a small extent. Built up charge should not do what it does. The USB off my MSI mobo and ASUS is filtered and grounded.. Even they do this to an admittedly lower frequency.
The Moto charger puts out a healthy 1A if I'm not mistaken. Not trading that in for some POS BB charger- It's 800mAh the one lying around at a lower 5V rating. That's going to mess things up in the long run-- higher voltage and amperage charging is faster and gets to the full capacity of the battery- the voltage has a say when it comes to lithium batteries.
Anyone here get a replacement from Moto if they had the same issue? Does you think its worth a try?
Thanks for the replies:good:
I had a Milestone (a GSM variant of the Droid) and it had the very same issue. However, it had a metal frame - upon touching it the issue was instantly alleviated.
Sent using a touch screen
Napisane na ekranie dotykowym
So this works out to an inherent flaw with this screen? I had a SAMOLED on my OG Wave and it never messed up {ever} must have been the metal body. Nevertheless, The razr is FUBAR when charging. Had an S2 for a while, never cropped up despite having a similar screen panel. Think I should just file a complaint and get the ball rolling here? Though service (Moto) is terrible in my country, and I don't think they've even launched the Razr HD here. I'd rather pick it over the S3.
WIshful thinking!

Have you tried connecting to any other wifi? That would be the best way to determine if it is your phone or your internet/router

1. Please also try some secured WiFi AP.
2. Also install and use this attached app to see if your Amaze is anyhow getting internal and its external IP from the router.
Have fun!
jauhien said:
Your Amaze isn't T-Mobile, is it? Hence there has been no ICS update created for your phone...
People are doing some workaround to get ICS installed on such unbranded phones.. See that:

There's other carriers besides T Mobile you know!
To the OP, search the developer forum for RUBY roms - there are some for Canadian carriers as well as some others.
Who is your carrier?
HTC RUBY - Energized ICS Faux123 kernel - XDA Premium
If u only bought it a week ago, y not just go exchange it and tell them it has WiFi problems

If you are not getting a proper external IP - then that app hangs for about two minutes.. and then anyway displays your at least internal IP if you anyhow got any..
I guess you couldn't wait for two minutes and declared that the app crashed..

As I see my presumption was 100% correct - nothing Canadian in your handheld.. CID #44 - a typical unbranded Asian model.. That's anyhow not bad at all..
Further I see the smartphone is getting its internal IP what we may interpreter as there is no problem with WiFi hardware, it performs OK..
There is some misconfiguration (misunderstanding) between the handheld and the router.. this is why I advised you to try connecting to some secure AP..
Then If no lack - just do the factory reset on the spot and try connecting again to that secure AP..

[Q] Unusual & unlikely Samsung GS3 i9300 running Gingerbread

Hi everyone! Today I finally decided to register in this great community, mainly because I'm looking for help and you are the ones that can help me.
I'm Henry and as the title says, I've hold and played with a Samsung Galaxy S3 running nothing more than Gingerbread. Why and how were my first questions when I first saw it, but I haven't been able to answer that.
This is the story: a friend of mine was given that GS3 hoping that he could solve the stuttering and lagging that it had (has) after a professor of him took it to a "technician". He, being the Android lover he is became surprised, so he came to me yesterday hoping that we could bring things back to normal (install stock jelly bean), but with no avail. That "thing" has the stock recovery and is not rooted, things we found EXTREMELY weird. We spent three hours trying to root it and then install a new recovery using different tools (gingerbreak, odin, odin mobile [we realized odin mobile needs root permissions to work, but still], samsung kies, universal_gb_root, framaroot) but you guessed: nothing worked. The only thing we didn't use was SuperOneClick. We couldn't put it into download mode and when we connected it to the pc, it didn't appeared as "adb interface" or "android composite device" but appeared with another strange name that had nothing to do with samsung or android, I can't recall the name of it right now. The other things we found was that the GS3 was showing that the internal storage was just 200mb, when it's a phone with "16"gb of storage, and that the battery says SAMSONG instead of SAMSUNG.
Long story short: it was an international, unlocked Samsung Galaxy GS3 i9300 running Gingerbread. My friend got it because a professor of him wanted he to fix it because after she took it to a "technician" it was very laggy. It was not rooted, it has stock android recovery (useless) and odin won't recognize it.
Do you guys have any effing idea of what is going on and how can we fix it?
We have three hypothesis: 1) they swapped her phone with a chinese knockoff (an extremely identical and functional knockoff); 2) they swapped the GS3's hard drive; 3) they didn't know what they were doing and installed Gingerbread instead of Jelly Bean (yup, sounds unlikely).
Thank you very much for yor help and attention!
Before getting halfway through your post, I decided you were talking about a clone/ knock-off

Then it's an extremely accurate clone. It has the samsung's boot animation, sounds, everything!

They all do. These things you listed are the easiest things to "clone". In fact, since they live in software, they could easily have been ripped out of the official firmware. A friend of mine (willingly) bought a Note 2 clone. It even has the annoying whistle notification.
It's not that accurate a clone though, if it comes with gingerbread, which the S3 never came with.

Well, you do have great points. Even so, is there something we can do about it? Besides give the police a heads up?

You need to prove 2 things.
1) It is a fake
2) It was not a fake before
2 is quite easy if it was supplied form an official network / carrier / provider store. 1 will involve screenshots of the about phone area and some physical shots as well as some info gained from this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cpuid.cpu_z&hl=en

You're welcome. Please let me know how you get on,
Easiest way to tell a clone is to take the back off and compare side by side with a genuine s3, the shape of the inner mouldings, position of sim and sd readers is very hard to exactly match during the reverse engineering process.
But the gingerbread and lack of download mode is conclusive in itself.
Check the imei and serial numbers on the original phone packaging against the imei of the handset you hold, if they are the same then your friend bought a clone.
