SGS2 as a media streamer? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Im thinking of using my S2 as a media streamer now I have the S3. Initial tests have been mixed, with the best performance coming from BubbleUPnP and MX Player, Does anyone have any hints and tips that might improve things. Also is there a good, Android to Android remote app? As would be nice to be able to control it remotely.
Any hints or tips would be great.
Thanks.

Sell it and get a proper dedicated device.

Lol, the idea is to keep it as a backup. I'm trying to make the most of it and not just hide it in cupboard.

Well, you're asking how to best pound a square peg into a round hole... but anyways; if you want it to perform its best as a "media streamer", I'd say factory reset/full wipe it, debloat it as much as you can, only install the bare minimum of what you want on it.
As far as remote controlling: http://www.google.com/search?q=control+another+android+device

Thanks for the advice. I know Ill probably end up copying large mkv files rather than streaming them. The mhl cable wont work with the S3 and rather than bin them Im hoping my square peg can fit a hole like this.

You link solves my main problem, I kept finding Remote desktop software when I looked. Not Android to Android. If nothing else makes an interesting project.

Why won't the mhl cable work with the s3? Isn't the s3 an mhl device?
Edit: ah, I see the s3 has its own special mhl adapter that isn't compatible with other mhl devices. Bravo, Samsung. WTF.

Yea they're trying to act like apple. The s3 is like a s2s not an s3. And now they're not allowing s2 accessories to work with s3.. Money grab

Can I display presentation from Wizard to Video projector ?

I want to play Power Point presentation using my Qtek 9100 on video projector ...
Does anybody know is there a way to do that ? Maybe using some accessory or bluetooth connection if present on projector?
Thanks
You can't
No I am afraid you can't do that.... they haven't given that possibility I really wonder why. When one pays so much this is the one thing that is really missing. A direct TV out.

For an additional $10, you'd expect it to fetch your newspaper
SOTI pocket controller
You can do this from the PDA via a PC hooked to the projector using Soft Object Technology's Pocket Controller. I bought it originally for my Wallaby, recently got a Wizard and am using it there now. Nifty application, you can do everything with the desktop image that you can do with the touchscreen, and I think it lets you record a movie of you doing stuff on the PDA.
More info here: http://www.soti.net/
Well worth the registration cost IMO

That's prety cool I'd get one to try but I keep my presentations on the SD card... LOL kinda hard to show the presentation if I have to take it out...heh. Currently I just transfer the presentation to someone's laptop and use theirs. Kinda "old tech" and not "high tech".

this looks like what you need
hmmmm... would this do the trick???

Maybe, why not... I am sure it would be more than 10 $!
I see that SpecTec has upgraded to 1024x768. Any other newer options out there?? Thanks!
BT?
I remember seeing that a projector supported bluetooth to transfer images. Wouldn't it be a solution for that, meaning you buy a bluetooth adaptor to hook to your projector and use the internal bluetooth to transmit your presentation? This way the SD port would remain available for the SD memory cards with the presentation.
If one finds it, please share...

I really wondering what you are 'lolz'-ing at. I'm not sure if you are ignorant or the Pakistan people (who sell the cords) are ignorant. As I have said a million time in this forum, getting the cable (cord) into a socket doesn't mean it works. You can connect a USB to 240V socket, doesn't mean you can charge your unit directly onto the phone (kids, dont try this at home).
How much do you understand about the USB connection, and the video connection (the yellow thing you've mentioned). Not to mentioned that one runs on digital and one runs on analog signal (at a different frequency), they probably runs at a different voltage anyway. And also, the fact that, a Wizard phone doens't have USB host to it, it wont do the job in the way you've mentioned.

Get a pool together for HDMI Out on CM7

I'd really like to get HDMI out on CM7.1 running on my GalaxyS2 I777. I have absolutely zero programming chops. But what I do have, is the willingness to drop some cash on a couple MHL HDMI cables. Obviously, I'd only purchase this for kernel/Cyanogenmod developers. Unless they want me to simply make a donation, but I'd really like to get this working on this phone. I know it's not a simple process, but I'd like to get the tools in the hands of the devs. So is this a bad idea or a good idea?
I love the idea of HDMI out in CM7, but it seems we are beholden to what the Int. does. If the CM7 developers who were given an Int. version by Samsung can't figure it out....
I would love to have it on my GS II.
But remember it will need to be charged at the same time otherwise the battery will drain soon.
So Microusb HDMI out and charging at the same time? Sound a bit hard to do.

The MHL adapters have a micro SD port on them so you can connect your charger (I think you HAVE TO have the charger.connected for it to work anyways).
I too would love to see this work and am surprised the international SGS2 would have it already also.

I forgot that Samsung gave them an I-9100 to play with. Well, I guess if they already have that, I guess they have the MHL-HDMI adapters. I tried to help :-( I guess it's time to donate...

I don't think tv out works yet in either though (i9100 or for sure not the i777). I would love for them to get it working, about the only thing missing IMHO.

Wait...you can't do HDMI on CM7?
Nope. Kind of a bummer, and I'm not in any way complaining. I love my CM7'd I777 (lot's of 7's). I'm just trying to make to device even better. But I guess the only thing we can do is donate. Come Thursday (my actual payday) I'll be throwing some money their way. They do a damned fine job.
As long as this works with the International Version, I'll donate. Put me down for 10

[Q] Output the screen to a TV via this cable?

I know the droid incredible can do it, but it's definitely software based from what I've read. If I purchase this cable, would there be anyway to get it to work? I would love to tinker with it if it's possible and I can get a good start on how to figure it out.

MicroUSB to TV output cable (not really sure what the official name for it would be lol)
I'm hoping it's not ONLY HTC phones [regardless of the branding of the cable] =( Because even though it's not HD, it's still pretty cool to connect 2 sixaxis PS3 controllers and output the N64 emu to the TV for a 2 player game! Almost like having a full portable console =)
The Player definitely does not support MHL (HDMI output), but there is some stuff in /system about TV output though, not sure how tvout worked on the Captivate?

Apparently composite output via the 3.5mm jack.

Hmm, I am guessing (and hoping) that you wouldn't need mhl support for that, since the chip is built into the cable?
Also; @entropy512, where in /system are you seing things related to tv-out?
Edit; I see a file in /system/lib called "lib_tvoutengine.so" is that what you are talking about?
There's also something like /system/bin/tvoutsvr or something like that - it gave me lots of headaches when I was working on CWM... (stuff in use in /system = can't unmount = all sorts of bad **** happening.)

OTG Cable & HDMI MHL Adapter

Ok i havent gotten my samsung galaxy player 5.0 yet but i am working on it i ran across these 2 amazing accessories. And i was wondering has anyone else tried this on there device. Let me know any info you may have
HDMI HHL Adapter

OTG Cable

As for the HDMI,
The Samsung galaxy player, dose not support tv out
No OTG support (yet). They recently ported it to the galaxy s, we might be able to get it to work at least on the 4.0, witch is pretty much identical from what I have seen. So far I have confirmed their partitions are mounted identically, they have the same CPU, and I think they might even have the same motherboard (both of them have "ro.board.platform=s5pc110" in build.prop, not sure if that is the MB or not). The 5.0 is a totally different story though...
OP, you should go for the korean version if you want the HDMI output.
This version also supports 1080p (the device is also in english), has 16 or 32gb, and I found something very amusing : the korean version is made in Korea, whereas all the other versions are made in China. I guess koreans only buy korean products, haha! But I couldn't tell if it's any better...
MHL is definitely not present in the 5.0 - I tried the adapter that came with my Infuse.
There's a chance it might support analog TVout via the headphone jack, but this is unknown and no one has tried it yet.

Hey entropy512, would you be willing to edit the settings.apk for the 4.0 U.S. version if I sent it to you, then someone with the right cable could see if the tvout works?
I have a TV out cable from my ipod 5g, if someone needs testing, i'm game
When I plug the cable into my headphone port, no picture shows up, however the audio dose not switch to headphones, it keeps playing through the speakers, so that must mean something...

Yep, it means that your headphone jack detector works.
Dang, I'm almost sure this has video out, at least the 4.0 since I think it even has the same MB as the gt-i9000! I sure wish I could smai edit the settings.apk so that the option would show up, but I've been looking for a good guide on doing so and have yet to find one. I havn't had time to just learn smali as I have school, so unless there is someone out there with a 4.0 (possibly 5.0 has TV out as well, but less likely) that knows how to smali edit, we're stuck.
If you want tvout settings to appear then all you should need to do is get a settings.apk from a gt-i9000 and load it. Make sure it is the same framework as the one that you are running eg. 2.3.5. The setting will show up but I have found that just having the setting there does nothing if the functionality is not there...
Let me know how it goes...
Sent from my YP-G70 using XDA App
Well, I asked for the apk two days ago on the gt-i9000 forum but no one ever responded. Guess I'll go bump the thread! I guess those galaxy s owners are to busy to help a poor galaxy player owner, lol!
FYI, You don't need to ask, all you need to do is download a full rom for gt-i9000 and pull the settings.apk out.
You can use "kitchen" to do this if it's an odin flash, if it's a CWM zip then just open this zip and extract it out...
Ya, I thought of that, my internet is really slow though, guess I'll start it and it will be done by tonight.
Well, I tried the settings.apk, but it fc when I select display, or any other menu. Any suggestions? I guess the real way to do it would be to smali edit the original, but I have no idea how to do so.
Well, I have a 5.0 and not a 4.0 and I'm using 2.3.6. In the 5.0, settings for tvout are not there. It's just not in the code. If I were you, I would use adb logcat to get the exception info to find out why the settings.apk is fc and go from there....
Eh, I think I might call it quits for now. I've got a busy month, so if someone wants to pick up where I left off, here is the apk someone gave me.

Why doesn't OTG work on the galaxy players? I thought it was standard in all android devices?
I think this player not support TV out?
There is a small chance it supports TV out via the 3.5mm jack. Someone needs to test it with a correct cable first, to confirm or deny.

hdmi out

hi guys,
after abit of help. i bought a hdmi adaptor, from amazon this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007K8NNOA/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
so that i would be able to play content from my phone straight through to my tv. I also bought a new hdmi lead and i connected using the phone charger and lead that came with the phone.
When i plug it all together it shows on the phone that hdmi out is connected and i can display video or photos on the external device. But no matter what i do i cannot get a picture to display on the tv.
Am i doing something wrong? Or does it never work? I tried rebooting the phone i tested the hdmi lead to make sure it works. Is there another option on the phone i need to select to i need to use a different app?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Are you on the stock rom/kernel? I can't say I use this feature as much as I thought I would, but I have noticed some kernels break this feature (though I can't say which ones anymore - been a while) and I've seen some roms break this as well. I don't know if this was a placebo or what, but I also noticed that it broke for me after removing some of Sprint's or HTC's bloatware... I think it was the transfer app, but it doesn't make much sense to me why.
I'd try it on a full stock rom/kernel first to make sure it's not software related. Then try it on multiple TVs. I actually had an experience once where it wouldn't display on my TV, but worked fine on my HDMI enabled pc monitor - same symptoms you're describing. Tried different kernel, all was better. But I've also read about people just having a bad mhl adapter or bad hdmi cable too.
As above it needs to be supported by rom and kernal. Try a stock configuration and see what happens. If that fails it might be a faulty adaptor, these cheap ones are known to fail easily.
i appreciate your guys help. i am on stock rom/kernal. my tv is pretty new. The phone is showing as having a hdmi connection so wasn't sure if it could still be the adaptor? i will try it on another tv at the weekend. if it still doesn't work maybe send the adaptor back?
so it should display whilst playing a film through the stock video player? i dont need to use a special programme or anything else?
It automatically displays whatever is on the phone's screen. No need for anything special beyond plugging it in. It could still be a faulty adapter even though the phone shows hdmi.
Another idea might be to double check your tv out settings on the phone. Make sure those are correct.
