[Q] Usb Otg Crash - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Sorry if there has already been a post like this, my sgs3 seems to work well with usb otg with mem sticks and different input devices, but when i try to connect any External Hard Drive over 2tb, my phone freezes and crashes, any reasons why???

There might be an problem with the HDD not getting enough power or it might be a problem with the file system. But to be honest, the worst case should be the phone does not recognizing the HDD or telling you that it's corrupted. A crash is definitely out of the ordinary.

It is Externally powered so i doubt it it the power, but my usb powerd 100gig hdd works fine, but thanks for reply

how did you get a 100gig hard drive to work. i cant get my hdd to work with it. only the light comes on but the phone doesnt find anything

Use a Y-usb connector, 2 usb's in one end and a micro-usb on the other. Plug one usb in to usb charger that came with the phone, plug the other usb into tho otg addaptor, and finally the micro-usb into the hdd, and bang it should work.

i have the same problem. i have two different 1Tb drives (one western digital one Hitachi) both formatted as Fat32 and both make the phone crash and need a full reboot. maybe i need to try reformatting the drives.
i emailed samsung asking them exactly what formats/size/specs are required of a hard drive to be supported by an s3 via otg. obviously their reply was not very useful. they told me it doesnt work... which i already knew and had already told them in my email. I replied asking for more specifics but so far I have been ignored. I even offered to buy a samsung hard drive if they could tell me it would work.

I had the same issue with my WD 500gig 2.5 HDD. After some research you have to either 1) the HDD in Fat32 or exFAT or 2) when you are rooted use one of the apps that mount NTFS partitions (e.g. I am using Paragon NTFS&HFS+). At least that brought my HDD to live, before just got the empty flashdrive found, filesystem unknown message, but I also read in different other threats that people have issues with other HDDs.

SD cardreader as PCMCIA - recommendation anyone?

For playing with all this stuff here I'm seeking a PCMCIA card that I can use as card reader. Any recommendations?
why not as usb bet those would be waaaaaayyyy cheaper
Is and SD cardreader suitable for writing bootable SDs?

For one, I hate having hanging all sort of stuff on my two USB ports
or using a hub would require extra cabling, wall outlet power supply etc.
Second, my USB is 1.0 not 2.0 (I believe) and last but not least I'm not sure whether a USB card reader is compatible with the method of physical access required for SD formatting.
If you know of one, plese fill me in.
well you dont need to have the sdreader connected when you are not using it
not all sdcard readers use external psu's non of mine does
usb1 and 2 are backwards and forward compatible with eachother
generaly i think the prices of the pcmcia's are at least 2 times that of the usb ones
and the pcmcia ones i've seen only support SD and maybe mmc
where the usb readers mostly support 12 different flash times at once

Thanks. I got one for 11 €, UCR-61, Made in China.
Success! I flashed my device, after exchanging the motherboard this morning.
As already mentioned I has a spare device with broken display which I
recently bought for experimenting purposes.
With that MB (which contained a WM 2002 BTW, I was able to flash one of the ROMS from lumpistefans site.
Now the SD seems to be formatted in some way so that the OS always ask to format the device when I insert it. Hhhm. I had my Tomtom and a backup on it. Weird.
Also it is no longer recognized (now after I used it for ROM flashing) as a Windows file system when I insert it into the USB SD reader.
Someone should have told me that the filesystem structure gets blown away when using for flashing
well i think most people know that making the sd card a bootable self install delete everything on the card goes without saying
but of cause whats obvious to some may not be so for everybody
you can use pocket mechanics to format the card if you want

[Q] Accessing USB flash drive: OG-GS2 vs i727-SR

I know this isn't the Skyrocket forum... but hoping a knowledgeable developer might know the answer. I have an OG-GS2 and just picked up a i727-Skyrocket phone. Both phones are rooted and are using the stock kernel. Using a USB connector (link below), I can quickly plug in the adapter to the OG-GS2 and it recognizes my Sandisk flash drive... and can easily transfer files using Root Explorer. However, on the Skyrocket, it cannot read the flash drive. Can the OG-GS2 read NTFS while the Skyrocket cannot? Not sure why one stock kernel would recognize flash drive while the other would not. Thx.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1322406
bumping for a lil' help... more info on the issue:
Here's the thing... I have 2 of those cables.. both work fine with the i777 OG-GS2 (once connected, the "USB Device Connected" icon in pull-down appears and stays so you can disconnect later). However, on the i727-SR, when I connect the Sandisk flash drive (8Gb), it says "USB Device Connected"... "Media Scanning Completed", but the USB icon does not appear in pull down. When I open files with Root Explorer, I can see /sdcard/usbstorage/SDA folder, but no files in the folder. On the flash drive I have 162mb used and 7.31 GB free; but when in the SR /sdcard/usbstorage/SDA folder it reads "0k used, 392.22mb Free". Can it be a hardware on the SR or something inherently different in the SR kernel vs the OG-Gs2 kernel?
I am running into the same issue so wanted to bump to see if anyone else had this problem.
I can't even get any USB recognition when I plug in my USB OTG cable (+ thumb drive) into my sky rocket.
Does it not support it?
Hate to state the obvious but doesn't look like it. The only thing I can recommend is reformatting the flash drive with a fat32 filesystem.
Since the ogsgsii, our phone, doesn't have the issue the skyrocket does, there's no way for any of us to trouble shoot issues like what you're having. Try sending a message to silver03wrx or pirateghost. They seem to be some of the biggest helps you have on the skyrocket forums.

Thanks for the response. I'll look around in the skyrocket forums.

Doing something wrong? connecting to computer...

OK so I connected my prime to my PC to transfer over some music and videos to occupy me for my upcoming trip specifically to my micro SD card, and it only connects "as media Device" and shows up in my computer as portable media player. This if F-ing retarded I just want it to operate as a disk drive as my phone does. I plug my phone in and it asks me like a good piece of silicon should.
Maybe I am missing something and all is well but where is that option? It is a problem because it just doesn't work, if I want to check a file on my prime from my PC it has to copy it to some temp spot on my pc????? also I tried copying 12gb over and it was going to take something ridiculous like 4 hours!!!!
I stick the same card in my android GB PHONE and it copies in ~ 20 minutes so is this and ICS thing or is this just yet another stupid move by ASUS?
I have tried to be objective with this tablet, I have barely posted anything bad in the 2 MONTHS (today) I have owned it but this just annoys me along with the bluetooth/Wifi problem, non existent GPS, random reboots, seemingly shotty haptic feedback and 4 hot spots on my screen. I would send it in to get fixed however I honestly am loosing faith in ASUS and want it for my trip to Vegas on Monday and then I'm going to Jamaica in a month.
On top of this I Pmed Gary and he must think I was digging for a lawsuit as he said he would be caught up om PMs last weekend expect for the ones he deleted feeling they were asking things in a way that was digging for a lawsuits? I have never taken a law course in my life and don't even have my own lawyer.
I just feel really betrayed and I'm sorry my little question turned into a rant I just needed to get it all out. I will send it in when I am not in need of the tablet and make my final judgement then but as it stands neither me nor my family (as I am the tech guy) will EVER buy anything ASUS again.
when I plug my prime into a computer it shows up as a media device just like you said, however I can double click on it and access the tablets internal storage and microSD card just like a USB hard drive. Transferring files too and from the tablet seem about as fast as transferring them to my USB hard drive.
Also I don't known what phone you have, but my Galaxy S2 also acts like a media device and doesn't ask me what kind of USB connection I want to make. But likewise I can still access the internal storage and microSD card just like they were a mounted hard drive.
I am connecting my devices to several Windows 7 PCs.

Thanks, I'm using an HTC amaze and off it i can play my files directly and transfer rate was literally 10 times faster. I did realize clicking it shows both storage directories but its super slow and try playing a copied file.
I'm using win 7 64 bit on my PC.
It's because the Prime (and most if not all new Android devices) use MTP which is MUCH slower than the previous method. So no, not Asus as fault this time!

This might not work for you, but both my Win 7 laptop and my Win 7 desktop have SD card slots built into them. I find it much easier and faster to just pop the microSD card slot out of the Prime and plug it into my PC to move large files over to my tablet.
An microSD -> SD card adapter is much smaller to carrier around than even data cable, and they are cheap enough that you can get a bunch and just stash them around places you might need to do transfers in. I actually use an SD card adapter to replace the dummy card that came with my laptop. It still protects the SD card slot and at least now I have something functional in there.

OK well thanks for clearing that up. that kind of sucks, why do they use it if its slower?

that would be the ideal solution however my PC doesn't have a card reader
They use it (if I recall correctly) because it allows for the entirety of the devices storage to be used for any purpose. I'm not sure the trade off on performance is worth it though.

external storage not working - suggestions?

For some reason the SD slot or USB slot are not showing me the devices in them from my keyboard. When I insert an SD card or reader into the USB port, nothing happens. It worked a few days ago. I have rebooted a few times. Any suggestions?
Im in Thailand on vacation and was planning on using it to back up my photos, this is not good if they are no longer going to work.
Did you format it NTFS or something like that? Needs to be FAT32.
Thats not correct. The Prime can read NTFS just fine.

Have you used the mount option under Settings --> Storage? I needed to activate it there, then it showed up in the filemanager.
One device is a USB external HDD that worked a few days ago when I connected it and the other SD card is from a Sony camera that has images on it.
Both worked in the past. Really weird.
I see two options in the external storage and tried both without any luck.
BTW - the USB HDD gets power when plugged in, the light on it lights up but the tablet does not see it.
sta
to update everyone, I did a factory refresh on the prime hoping that it would fix it, but it looks like the dock is bad? Im typing on it now though, just the external storage ports will not work.
Now Im in Bangkok without enough CF cards for my camera now that I will not be able to back them up onto an external HDD.
I either need to find a dock in Bangkok or more CF cards to last 10 more days (today was day one).
Not very happy with this Tablet and dock right now...

Samsung Galaxy SIII SCH-S698C activation and USB otg questions

Hello, all.
I have a straight talk samsung galaxy s3 sch-s698c I was able to flash cwm and lineage os 14 onto with no problem, but I have a couple of questions and issues, though:
1. what issues would be encountered if I activate this phone thru straight talk with a custom rom? I ask because I was unable to find the exact lineage OS build for the sch-s698c, but used the one for the Verizon model, the sch-i535, which DOES work. How do I activate this phone with that Verizon ROM on it? I haven't activated it yet.
2. I am having a weird issue with usb otg working. I am able to plug in one of those dual end usb thumb drives that has a micro USB end with no problems, but when I use an otg cable (which I had to order) and a USB stick, hard drive, etc nothing happens. I want to access the files on my laptop, which kicked the bucket, and the hard drive is still good and is connected to a sata to USB adapter. I have tried using various otg apps, such as usb otg helper, apps that detect for otg capability, and tried testing the otg cable on a phone that I knew had otg to see if the cable was bad, but it wasn't. When I tested for otg, the API was there in the os, but the system was unable to detect the otg signal. How is a dual end USB drive able to communicate with this phone, but the otg cable not??? I have also tried using the stock firmware for this phone, which I had backed up before flashing lineage os; no-go. What do I have to do to fix this?
Update:
I used a tool called "USB host controller" and it reports "no root hub found" and also reports "s3c root host driver was not found". What does this mean?? I tried to find this driver all over the internet, but it's a needle in a haystack.
HOWEVER, I run this program with the dual ended thumb drive plugged into this phone, and it reports a root hub and the phone in host mode. While this phone works with thumb drives that have a micro USB end, I still don't know why it won't work with an otg cable, SMH... Are there any circuits in the dual end drives that make otg work, or otg USB hubs that have such circuits?
Okay folks, I feel like a TOTAL IDIOT right now. I solved the USB otg problem by placing a sliver of a business card in the bottom of the charging port before inserting the otg cable. Apparently the otg plug fits too loosely in the charging port due to wear and had a bad connection. Now it works.
Now to the activation question...
What do you mean by activation? the sim thing? if its that i think you can do it only on stock rom

Activation as in getting cell service restored. To my knowledge, the phone does not need a sim if using stock rom. I was able to purchase a plan and activate w no sim, but only with stock. I couldn't activate it using a custom rom.
However, I did find a good thread on this with a little diggin: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-verizon/development/guide-to-flashsetup-sim-apn-cm-cm-based-t3351290. According to this thread, i will need to get a deactivated Verizon sim and a BYOP activation kit for straight talk or something like that to restore service to an sch-s698c using cyanogenmod based roms intended to work with the sch-i535. I don't have a Verizon sim yet and would like to look into this later. What do you think?
