Hello fellow owners of this Lovely Phone.
I've noticed some, what I think is a little high temperatures when using my phone. Yesterday it went as high as 42 degrees celsius, but under normal usage(some browsing etc.) it's about 36°. I now wanted to hear you guys battery temps, just to have something to compare between.
The reason why I'm asking is because when I got my sgs ii i also noticed some high temperatures, but didn't bother to return my phone but later I found that I had a faulty device and then it was too late to refund the phone. So basicly I'm just Trying to avoid doing the same stupid thing again

sound normal to me, i have similar temps
I get similar results as well. I just wouldn't worry about it and enjoy your phone.

If I remember it should be. Last time I looked at mine it was 50 degrees.
Oh ok... Thanks.. I just hope the phone doesn't bulge up..

That doesn't seem right at all, while hosting a wireless hotspot for 3 devices my phone doesn't get above 80 F. How how (to the touch) does it feel?
I can feel the heat from the screen and also from the back when I just place my hand over the phone!! It happens when I play games on my phone (angry birds and so on).. And after sometime it goes back to normal..

Possibly random process
I have gotten my razr to 125 F, (52C) But that was charging, 4G, netflix, HDMI out, bluetooth on and docked. Have had it at 108F with only 3g, and some games or high power programs.
Also will shoot up to 102 randomly in my pocket (higher sometimes, it was uncomfortable) till I rooted and set a cpu governor for when screen is off.
Just registered here and posting from my tower. My device, droid razr, felt like it was getting too hot with average usage. It is my third replacement since February but that is a long story.
I called VZW tech support and they never heard of such a thing LOL. Anyway, I posted the issue on a couple of forums and learned about a great widget called BatteryLife. It is available at the market for free and happily is not one of those apps that requires you agree to let them have access to everything you own and your first born child.
After installing the widget today I find my device runs at a low of 85 Fahrinheit to a high of 105. At least so far. The widget displays battery usage and current temperature. So one thing I found out was that a device can feel hot compared to our body temperature but be within a safe range of operation. Hope this is helpful.
I took the phone to Motorola service centre and they said that the phone is getting unusually hot. So they took it for observation and said that they will get back to me tomorrow. They said that they will replace it if necessary!!! So hoping for the best!!
Mine has done this a few times as well. Yesterday I was reading with my bible app for about 10 minutes and it just got smoking hot. Wasn't using data wifi or anything. Its like it just shot up in temp. Over the weekend this happened while in my pocket. I rebooted it both times and the temp came back down. I did not notice any force closes or anything running weird. Is there a way we can see what the culprit is? Maybe a logcat or something?

I have to agree about this. Mine has gotten extremely hot atleast to me because of flashing etc..I stuck it in the fridge LOL just to cool before continuing with flashing. While it may feel hot it might not be in danger.
Having that widget is cool (no pun intended ) I've been charging my razr to 100% before I go to sleep.
It was @ 82 Fahrenheit when it began, starting @ 60% When I checked it after it reached the full charge it had gone up to 84°.
Off the charger overnight it had gone to 90% charge and the temperature of the device was 82°.
As an aside, if I use my car charger the temp goes up around 8° or so. I'd encourage anyone to get that BatteryLife widget. You'll know what is going on with your device and if there is a warranty issue you'll be on firm footing to prove it.
BTW, after about 15 minutes on tapatalk my device is @ 96.5° F.

I just played dead space for 20 min and it got to 41C
I just got the phone from the service center in the morning and it hadn't heated up so far.. Actually haven't crossed 37°c.. The service guy just formatted and flashed the ROM. I have been using the phone normally till now but haven't installed some of the apps I had previously.. So will do that and let you know.
Anyway the service guy said that he will replace the phone if it still has the same problem.

After how long does it get warm when you play games like NOVA 3 and such?
For me it does after like 10-20min which is somewhat short to me, but then again, I've never owned a proper flagship phone such as the s3 before.
My phone gets heated up to 47°c after 20mins of riptide.
What's the temperature your phone heats up to? I suggest you use badass battery monitor to check the temperature

Your phone does what? Are you overclocking or something? My S2 doesn't get to 47°C after 1h of NOVA 3 while still being overclocked(Both the CPU and GPU).And the S3 is supposed(And I think proven too) to produce less heat than the S2.
My S3 gets a bit warmer too. Think it will be fixed in subsequent rom releases. Same thing happened with my S2 when I had it; it went away eventually

My s3 barely produces any heat compared to my s2,that thing was burning the flesh in my hands... Maybe that's the reason nova 3 runs sluggish on my phone but not to anyone else?

Has stock roms ever fixed the heat issues through updates in the past (on other phones ofc), or do I have to root and flash a custom rom to decrease the heat?
My s3 also get very hot from both sides after playing 15 mins of shadowgun. I m using stock rom. And yea here temperature is 42C in pakistan lahore!!!

I can't find any details for the Exynos chip in the S3, but afaik most ARM devices have a Tmax (maximum CPU temperature) of 50-something (58?) degree Celsius.
So if it's already 42 outside, you can expect the system to be 52 as air-cooling is terribly inefficient, especially in hot dry air.
When you fire up some games it will thus go above it's threshold and automatically reduce it's performance to keep itself from being damaged due to overheating.
Hi guys,
I've bought a SGS3 and i am facing some temperature issues and i want to know if it is normal. At a normal usage (for example while im writing this thread) the battery temp is at 45 degrees Celcius at the bottom of the device - sim card / micro SD zone. Is it normal?!?! it is burning my hands!!! i had a htv desire and a SGS2 and it never happened to me...and no, im not playing any game.
What should i do?
Cheers mates!
Not normal return it.

Sounds familiar:

I'd return it asap.
My first galaxy s3 would reach temps above 49c. I was able to exchange it without issue from expansys. But yes that's not normal.

Depends allot on ambient air temp and what the task the device is performing.
Say, OAT is 35-40 and surfing away with 3g will put the battery temp well into the mid-high 40s. Also performing high CPU tasks and charging at same time will do this.
If this is not the case for you, then it is not normal temp just sitting there in a controlled environment surfing the net.....
But before doing anything, check that there is not done rogue app eating away at the CPU. Maybe also factory reset and check before installing any 3rd party apps.

I think I found the cause...i was surfing the web using weak 3G signal. If i use WIFI, the phone will stay at 30/35ºC. But its normal that with 3G network, the temps reach 45ºC??
Thanks for the help!
Hi,
I've got same trouble, over 3g the bottom is over heat,
but in wifi mode, not heat too much.
Is there a way, maybe a radio upgrade ??
The baseband processor and radio amplifier work at maximum capacity to make your phone reach the antenna when you got a very weak signal, so it's normal that the phone heats up.
If it gets really uncomfortable to hold you should return it, since it might have a hardware fault (not very likely but still always possible)
When you picture that a small (roughly 4cm!) antenna has to emit enough power to be heard up to ~1.5km IN ANY DIRECTION away with the signal not being sent in a straight line but rather reflecting off several objects, it's awesome what modern technology is capable of.
I'm asking myself the same question, i'm afraid to return it without a reason. Can someone, with a Custom ROM, test a simple 3 min web browsing in weak 3g connection and report the temp of the battery?
Thanks in advance!
i got 46 degrees celcius while browsing on 3g..idk what`s the problem
The problem? i don't know if this is a problem, that's the reason because i wrote this thread I had a Desire and a SGS2 and i haven't felt this kind of heating in nether of them.
Have the same problem here man
Look at the attached picture.

~45c will not burn your hamd, it may make your hands sweat but other than that you should be fine.

Are you in a weak signal zone?
No i have full signal. It's crazy. The service center guy replaced my battery but the problem is still persistent. Please help.

What were you doing with the phone when it reached that temp?
Using whatsapp.
And downloading swiftkey from the play store.
Just a little multitasking screws this thing up.
As i said, it's crazy.
And also, no other tasks were running in the background FYI.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Your signal being "full" doesn't indicate the signal strength of the area you are in. As signal becomes harder and harder to reach, the antenna will use more and more power to try and improve it. This means your bars may look good, and your phone will get hot, but you're in an area that signal is not very good.
It is not a defect or a problem for the temperature range it reaches. If you are concerned about burning yourself you can get a case to prevent that, but the temps that it reaches will not burn you.
If you are indoors and actively using your phone try to switch to wifi so you get better battery life. Using 3g inside can use a lot more power and generate a lot more heat.
mainly its the battery
look at this thread

i had high temp problem the same as u
once i changed my battery It's all good
My screen get hot my max temp is 40 is that on?

Since day 1 I have noticed my T- Mobile SGS3 has ran pretty hot. This morning I was on the craigslist app and my phone reached 101 degrees while searching through postings. My SGS2 never came close to that temp, so I'm wondering if I should be worried about it. I have read about other people having heat problems, but this seems a bit extreme. What are your thoughts?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
The only heat problems I've had so far was when it was plugged in. It got to an uncomfortable temperature to hold in my hand (it wasn't burning my hand, just making it sweat.) Now it seems pretty fine, but I'll update this post if I have trouble later today.
Dont quote me exact but I read somewhere that Lithium ion batteries don't get in trouble til 145F+.
We were talking about temps over here

I think some of the problem may be with the clocking because before I changed the values the minimum was 1ghz and the Max was 1.5ghz... that may have just been my device but just throwing that out there.
"All this knowledge is giving me a major brainer!"
When I had my sgs2 heavy gaming got my phone up 116 quite often but the temperature didnt affect my phone at all. Your phone will shut itself down if it gets too hot to protect it from frying itself. 101 shouldnt be a problem for your s3.
Is anybody's phone getting somewhat warm while charging, around the verizon logo and the 4G LTE part? When I play games or watch videos, the phone is fine, and it's not warm. I checked my battery temperature during then, and it was around 85 degrees. When I plug it in, my phone gradually gets warmer, after about 15 minutes, it's at 92 degrees. I heard about the S3 getting really hot, and screen cracking that could be because of that. This has happened about three times. I am worried about it will eventually go up to 100 degrees or even higher. What temperature is considered "bad" for a phone? Is my phone defective?
If you think about this it is quite normal. I only actually noticed this myself when talking and charging but I onow what you mean. At 92 dont worry the battery itself is rated for somewhere around 140. Its not defective. Remember also you are using a 2 amp charger not a 1 like normal phones. Hope I helped you feel better.

I noticed this too. I thought it was odd as every other phone I've had only warmed up in the battery area. Good thing i have Best Buy's protection plan.
