Hi guys,
I've bought a SGS3 and i am facing some temperature issues and i want to know if it is normal. At a normal usage (for example while im writing this thread) the battery temp is at 45 degrees Celcius at the bottom of the device - sim card / micro SD zone. Is it normal?!?! it is burning my hands!!! i had a htv desire and a SGS2 and it never happened to me...and no, im not playing any game.
What should i do?

I'd return it asap.
My first galaxy s3 would reach temps above 49c. I was able to exchange it without issue from expansys. But yes that's not normal.

Depends allot on ambient air temp and what the task the device is performing.
Say, OAT is 35-40 and surfing away with 3g will put the battery temp well into the mid-high 40s. Also performing high CPU tasks and charging at same time will do this.
If this is not the case for you, then it is not normal temp just sitting there in a controlled environment surfing the net.....
But before doing anything, check that there is not done rogue app eating away at the CPU. Maybe also factory reset and check before installing any 3rd party apps.

I think I found the cause...i was surfing the web using weak 3G signal. If i use WIFI, the phone will stay at 30/35ºC. But its normal that with 3G network, the temps reach 45ºC??

I've got same trouble, over 3g the bottom is over heat,
but in wifi mode, not heat too much.
Is there a way, maybe a radio upgrade ??
The baseband processor and radio amplifier work at maximum capacity to make your phone reach the antenna when you got a very weak signal, so it's normal that the phone heats up.
If it gets really uncomfortable to hold you should return it, since it might have a hardware fault (not very likely but still always possible)
When you picture that a small (roughly 4cm!) antenna has to emit enough power to be heard up to ~1.5km IN ANY DIRECTION away with the signal not being sent in a straight line but rather reflecting off several objects, it's awesome what modern technology is capable of.
I'm asking myself the same question, i'm afraid to return it without a reason. Can someone, with a Custom ROM, test a simple 3 min web browsing in weak 3g connection and report the temp of the battery?

The problem? i don't know if this is a problem, that's the reason because i wrote this thread I had a Desire and a SGS2 and i haven't felt this kind of heating in nether of them.

~45c will not burn your hamd, it may make your hands sweat but other than that you should be fine.

Are you in a weak signal zone?
No i have full signal. It's crazy. The service center guy replaced my battery but the problem is still persistent. Please help.

Using whatsapp.
And downloading swiftkey from the play store.
Just a little multitasking screws this thing up.

Your signal being "full" doesn't indicate the signal strength of the area you are in. As signal becomes harder and harder to reach, the antenna will use more and more power to try and improve it. This means your bars may look good, and your phone will get hot, but you're in an area that signal is not very good.
It is not a defect or a problem for the temperature range it reaches. If you are concerned about burning yourself you can get a case to prevent that, but the temps that it reaches will not burn you.
If you are indoors and actively using your phone try to switch to wifi so you get better battery life. Using 3g inside can use a lot more power and generate a lot more heat.

Hey guys!
I have a problem.. whenever I use mobile data for half an hour or more, my battery temperature rises significantly. From 32 degrees centigrade to 50 degrees centigrade. The back side bottom part of my phone heats up! Is this normal? I have attached screen shots please help me out!
P.s. is my battery backup fine?
Scree on time is 3.5 hours
Mine warms up to that temp and even a little more whilst gaming or heavy use as well.
You can get a mesh vent case that should dissipate the heat better, but that high a temperature is still definitely unusual.
Does your phone heat up to 50 degrees centigrade after just half an hour of continuous use?

Is the battery faulty? Should I get a replacement?
If I ran something like shadowgun or dungeon defenders it gets very hot, I will run a game for half an hour and let you know the exact temp but for anything else it should be fine.

yes I am running stock and I have never overcharged!
Mine is the same. Browsing Facebook etc whilst on mobile data heats the phone and starts killing other apps like winamp.

I found that disabling HSPDA and HSPDA+ while surfing prevents the phone from overheating a little.
Could it be you got a pretty weak signal? Maybe try to change modem, mine gets a bit warm at heavy gaming (about 40°), but not at basic things like the xda app.

Using the mobile data creates more heat ovr using wifi, afaik. Thats why i opt to use separate portable wifi unlimited plan instead of unlimited internet plan attached with my phone

My phone gets heated to 50 degrees centigrade even when I am playing simple games like where's my water and Temple Run.
and yea signal is pretty weak! only 2bars but still isn't 50 degrees too much?
for me when i play games, my i9305 gets warm, but heats up in the bottom half until its too uncomfortable to hold when im surfing the net while on cellular data. this doesnt happen when im on wifi. anyone experiencing the same thing? should i go to samsung and ask for a replacement?

I went to the Samsung service center.. they told me that they are gonna test it first and see what the problem is.. if it is faulty then they would replace the battery.. the next day they told me that everything is fine and it's common for every phone to heat up a bit!:banghead:

wait, what? it isnt the battery thats heating up! its some other part of the phone... well maybe i'll just have to live with it since the phone doesnt lag or anything. its just the temperature.
in short i forgot my s3 in the car and it was damn hot...i came back to find it over heating and in boot loop.after it cooled down it was back to normal except now i have heat problem when i use the net or play a game...the question is was its exposure to over heat the cause of ruining something?

It definitely will get hot, I remember watching my son at swimming lessons last week.
I am in Bangkok and was outside using the phone extensively on 3G data, ambient temp 35+ Celsius. Can't remember exactly how hot the battery got, but sure out read well into the 40s.
Didn't have any hardware or software issues though.
As far as exchange goes, you could try, but they may reject the claim as you most likely were operating the device outside it's design limits.

All hardware is not exactly the same, so your device may be less torelant to excessive heat than others or vice versa.

Overheating will cause bootloops. I used to use my phone at work as a wife hotspot because it was faster than our work net. I plugged it in and it would always die after two hours from overheating. Finally rigged up a way to keep it in the freezer lol

I've just been browsing with WiFi & XDA solidly the last hour, and just ran a AnTuTu Benchmark test. Battery @ 35.6 degC / Inside ambient temp approx 25 degC Edit, after 5 mins cooling down, back down to 30 degC. Normal ........

Based on what you said, all seems back to normal.
To summarise;
It WILL heat up, depending on environmental conditions and also your using habits. CPU and GPU intensive apps and time spent on this state, and also general use whilst charging etc will heat it up.

Pull out the battery, there it'll list a safe operating temperature. The battery in my phone is "Safe" up to 60c, but it probably shuts itself off at around 55ish. 45 is nothing to a phone, so don't worry.
You're probably just being paranoid, paying super close attention to any kind of "Warm" after the overheating incident. It was probably reaching those same temps prior to leaving it in the car.
Hell, I left my Evo 3D (Super famous for overheating) on my black leather seats, in the summer, plugged in, and GPS running, for an hour or so. It shut itself off and wouldn't turn on for 45ish mins while I let it cool down... And it's running just fine now. Lol
left my phone turned on unattended in the car glove compartment for almost half a day in the afternoon. It was under direct sunlight, and when i finally took out the phone, the casing of the phone was very hot. Anyone can tell me if it would adversely affect the phone in anyway such as battery life or internet connection? cause i feel that the internet loads much slower compared to last time and i wonder if its a psychological issue. any help or answers is greatly appreciated

Your phone is fine, don't worry. These phones are able to withstand high temperatures. It's designed to shut down if it overheats to prevent damage anyway.

Being there's so much difference in battery life, I was curious if there might be a bad batch of phones. My phone gets great life and my dad's gets significantly less. He works about 2 blocks away from me and actually has a stronger signal in his building than I do at mine and his battery drops like a rock with nothing running. I'm rooted and froze the AT&T bloat. He's stock.
My serial number contains a PTM and the end number is in the 40000's. His serial number contains PZK and ends in a number in the 30000's. If you have time post your serial # info and how your battery life is.
I returned my ladies OG and now her battery life is better. Even b4 I rooted it drain was better from prior phone. Could be a batch. That's my lead as well

I'm contemplating returning my phone just in case of a 'bad batch,' but I'm afraid I'll get a phone that's even worse lol. I can't forever replace phones. I'm just trying to make it work.
Does this phone have the ability or need to reset battery stats? I know you couldn't do it, or it was unnecessary on the SGSII. Just curious if it's a calibration issue.

Resetting battery stats actually has no correlation with battery life whatsoever. It is not what controls the percentage that we see in screen. I believe it just tracks what apps or system files are or have been using up the battery. Battery stats gets an automatic reset whenever you reboot anyways.
For those with bad battery drain, just try and see what your serial numbers are n post it here to compare.

The battery life on my phone and seemingly most folks is great. Granted some folks probably live on the cusp of LTE coverage in their area and the radio is killing the battery while liking for signal (that happened to me with my EVO 4G).
If it were all devices, then only the battery life fanatics who shut down everything would be seeing 20hrs on a charge.
I think there's a bad batch of hardware or there.

seems odd that those who are having the issue are not likely to make to 10hrs on a charge (often 1/2 that)...while others are bumping 20hrs (myself included).
i have 4 emails on constant sync, as well as, facebook, weather, xda and a chess. each day has a couple hours of screen time. 1hr each day of either Pandora or Audible. 20-50 text and @45min - 1hr of phone time. ... in case you think i put my phone in my pocket and forget about it.
granted, i do connect to wifi at home and work. and i live in an area where i have solid LTE coverage at all times.
audible and screen time are my worst battery drains.

We got ours off the box. Not sure where you'd get it in the phone.
Did a little more research. Set them side by side for an hour with screens at same brightness, always on, with Nexus live wallpaper running. Both were hooked into wifi and the microcell. Battery usage over a 1 hour period was pretty much identical (within 1%). Then did some web browsing and hit all the same links and drain was the same. We thought it maybe was just battery conditioning. When I first got it I did 2 full drains and recharges with it off. He did that about a week in and thought it was fixed.
I left and a couple hours later his battery started to tank. Only thing we noticed was his accelerometer hung for some reason and had 5 hours on. He hadn't used anything that should have turned it on so no idea why it got stuck. Turned it off and the battery usage slowed to what one would expect. Then it had another couple minute burst of dropping. that was the last I heard.

The one thing I've notice about my phone is that when looking at my wireless icon in the notification bar, there is something transmitting 90% of the time (download it appears as it is just the bottom arrow blinking). It does this even when sync is turned off. I've gone through the phone and I can't see any app running. Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm convinced there's a bad batch.
My replacement phone literally just ran all night. I had been awake backing up my system with Titanium, and it stalled before I went to bed. TB kept my phone running for 8 hours straight with the screen on and my phone is only at 18%.
If your battery life is ****, return it. Currently running Stock, rooted and unlocked with dormancy fix.
So this is what betterbatterystats is showing me. I'm using around 5.8% a hour that's not the best but that's not bad right?

Taking a close look at the long battery review thread, while there is a lot of information there regarding individual battery usage, the screen-on and overall usage times vary by a lot. It is impossible to draw conclusions regarding why the results vary so much, because most people did not give enough relevant information there.
I think it will be very interesting if we all used the same *comprehensive* method to compare our battery usage. We could really discover important things about our individual usage and how it compares to others (and how to make it even better).
It is important to note that when battery life is low (in comparison to other G2 users), sometimes this could be because we are taxing our device with heavy usage (and nothing is actually wrong), but other times something is definitely wrong (wakelocks, bad phone reception, etc.). This thread will help each and every one of us (that get lower than expected battery life) understand which of these two possibilities is correct for him (something wrong VS taxing usage).
In order to do this, let's use the excellent "GSam Battery Monitor" app, which could be downloaded freely from the Play Store.
Please post your results when your battery becomes low (around 10 percent), after it was fully charged.
If you want an accurate opinion about your battery behavior, with tips on how to improve things, please provide all the attached screens (please provide the graph image in landscape mode, and sort it by "other"):

I say let's give this a shot. This phone has a beefy battery indeed, but still, some of us are posting 7 hours screen-on times, while some of us only 4. Let's see what this thread will provide us with. I have a good hunch this will be a very revealing thread.

Okay Well in the interest of troubleshooting good luck. I get 1.5 days easily with a good amount of music play. I always suggest people delete the Facebook app and use it in the browser, and disable data/sync while you're in a bad reception building/area

Yep, these are some solid good general advices.
I could only drain the battery to 50% today, so I'm posting this for now to get this thread running (and tomorrow I'll post the 10% results). It's funny because I have no trouble finishing the battery everyday, yet today it's giving me "problems". It's like it knows it is being monitored, and the battery hogs are afraid of being greenified...
Let's get over my results in the main screen:
Phone: yes, I did not use the phone to make phone calls. Not unusual for me...
Screen: almost 4 hours screen time, pretty impressive considering the phone has been running for more than 13 hours, and the battery is at 50%. On the other hand I did not make any phone calls, so this could be part of the reason for that excellent screen-on time. Btw, I'm using "Lux brightness control" instead of the LG2's pathetic brightness control feature, the Lux app itself drew practically zero power (as can be seen at the "App Sucker" screen, or actually, you can't even see it because it's too down in the list).
Phone Radio: At 7.9%, I don't really know whether it's good or bad, although this is definitely not a major battery user. I've attached the cellular reception screen too, just so people could reference with theirs. I think overall the reception is pretty good according to that image.
Wifi Active: The Wifi has been on the entire operating time. Most of the time it was connected to my home router, and some of the time it was not connected at all, but still on (when I was out of the house). I'm attaching the Wifi screen so people could see how much traffic the phone had through wifi, for reference. With only 3.9% battery usage, I think there is no need to turn the wifi off, ever.
Held Awake: The phone was awake for 1 hour (while the screen off, that is). Out of 13 hours being awake for 1 hour, I'm not sure whether this is good or bad. This will become clearer when more people will post their result here. It says that the power that was drawn during this 1 wake hour is 0.0%, I'm not sure if this is true, or some kind of inability of GSam to calculate battery usage for this awake period (if GSam IS correct, then I guess I don't understand what's the point of deep sleep, if the phone draws practically zero power even when awake...).
Bluetooth: The BT was on the entire operating time, but connected to a device only a short amount of time. In any case it drew no power according to this screen... like wifi, I think there is no need to turn the BT off, ever.
Regarding the "App Sucker" screen, I can't really say anything intelligent about this, no app seem to drain the battery too much. The 4 hours screen-on time was mainly spent browsing the internet, using Whatsapp, watching youtube, using XDA app (not even listed in the first screen) neither of which seem to drain the battery too much...
So, now that we have some reference (and a reference for a pretty good battery behavior, I think) It will be interesting to see how your results compare...
Just a quick question. I work in a building where there is terrible service. I mean so bad sometimes I get none at all. How does turning off mobile data save battery. If you have bad cellular reception, turning off mobile data can help, but as you said it won't completely solve the problem because the phone still needs to connect to the network so you could talk and send SMS. I think switching to airplane mode (and using WIFI) is the best solution for battery life in this case. Still, I think you should use GSam to really see how much battery is drained by your bad cellular reception.
I am using it now. Waiting until it drops to around 20% to post my results. Will get back.

Here are my statistics. You think my phone just has bad reception and is in a bad area or there is something wrong with my antenna? My old Droid Razr HD was the same way, barely any service. I'm definitely not staying with Verizon. I pay out the noodle for "the best service" and I get crap. I live on Long Island outside New York City, my service should be amazing.

Ok, as promised, here are my 10% results:
Phone: did have some phone calls today, though nothing significant. I guess my usage can't really tell how significant phone calls are going to be with the G2, though this should not be a significant battery drainer for most.
Screen: As you remember, yesterday, after 13 hour phone usage, I had 50% battery, I had 3 hours 47 minutes of screen-on time. At that point I thought I might get over 7 hours screen-on time, but here I show about 5 hours 25 minutes. I guess that if I completely drained it, I would have gotten close to 6 hours, not bad.
Phone radio: seems similar to yesterday, about 10% of the battery... I still get good reception, as the image shows.
Wifi active: Wifi had been on the entire time, using 5.6% of the battery.
Held awake: So, yesterday after 13 hours of usage, the screen was held awake 1 hours. Today, after a total of 31 hours, the phone was held awake a total of 3 hours. It seems that the phone consistently is held awake for about 1 hour, every 10 hours of operation time (under my specific configuration, that is). I still find it weird that this "held awake" time did not tax the battery at all. How is this possible ?
Bluetooth: was on the entire time, not connected most of the time. Zero impact on battery.
Regarding the App Sucker screen, similar to yesterday, can't say anything special about this. This day I kept browsing the interned using Opera browser, and added another hour using Runkeeper with GPS tracking (with screen off). After a full cycle of battery usage, the main battery draw comes from the Home launcher, next is Opera browser, and then the apps become pretty much insignificant in terms of battery usage. Maybe two last points here: I'm using both Lux brightness control (to control auto brightness) and Delayed Lock (to remove the lock when connected to certain wifi points and BT devices), both of these apps always run in the background, yet consume practically zero battery, so high recommendation for both of these (they also work great with the G2). Last point, I'm using all the google location access services (everything is turned on there), and I really don't see this taxing in any way, using this GSam report.
That's it for now. Waiting for your results for comparison.

Interesting results. I thought this thread would be revealing, and it doesn't disappoint already.
Your phone reception is pretty bad, much much worse than mine. BUT, you can see that the difference in battery draw is not really significant between my case (I have great reception) and yours, in both cases the phone radio took about 10% of the battery. It seems that the phone reception qaulity doesn't make much difference on the battery (whether it's pretty good, or pretty bad. Maybe this will change if the reception is horrific... like 0 and 1). Comparing my GSam report to yours, you will gain practically no battery advantage by making your phone reception better (at least considering your current phone usage - you barely made phone calls, but still phone reception is also important in order to keep the phone connected to the network, and also for mobile data...). This is REALLY surprising, I thought that when comparing my excellent reception to your very bad one, if I got 10% battery usage (for phone radio), you'll get something like 30%. This did not happen at all, surprisingly!.
Your Held awake time is pretty much similar to mine, as evertything else is similar to mine (wifi active, etc.), yet you seem to get significantly less screen-on time than I. I can think of one explantion: I see you are using G2's automatic brightness control, which is pretty horrible, while I use Lux brightness control, which can reduce the brightness much much more, when it's appropriate. I really can't think of any other major contributor to your battery drainage in comparison to mine...
One thing still keeps me bewildered: why doesn't the "held awake" period tax the battery ?? I mean, the phone is awake, yet no battery is being used... how could this be possible ? Is this a problem of GSam which can't read this information right ?

When you turn off mobile data the phone stops searching for a data connection, thus this battery draining process is halted

Barely read through the details but I charged my phone to 100% last night, pulled it around 6am today. Been texting and tweeting moderately. Made a few phone calls, checked voicemail. Used the flashlight a couple times and took a few pictures, flash off.

This is true but look at the sent part of data of the phone radio. My received data is much higher then yours but I can assure you I only receive data via WiFi because my phone signal is so bad. Your sent in comparison much more data then me probably via your phone signal.
This is also very important. I had my mobile data OFF while at work today. I have a shift tomorrow where I will keep the mobile data on and post new results.
Edit: Also about the phone being kept awake and not using any battery. It does seem odd. Perhaps we should also use the orginal screenshots of the stock battery app (pending you still have stock rom).

But, I don't see how the stock battery app will shed any new light on the kept awake period, if anything, the stock battery app is less detailed regarding almost everything...
