[Q] Compass and Gyroscope drivers fails after drop. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm new to this forum so please help me on my way, thank you guys. So recently I received my Galaxy S3 and I accidentally dropped it on the concrete floor. The screen and external parts of the phone is perfectly fine. Totally fine. But when I'm using Google Maps, until my friend used his Droid Razr, I never did realised that my compass was pointing to the opposite direction. It was all thanks to my friend as I could've been late for an important event. The problem with the gyroscope is that, well, it won't work. The gyroscope calibration under the 'Display' section of settings will always be stuck at the center like as if I did not move the device at all. Beside these two drivers, nothing else is wrong.

Nothing related to your dropped phone
Mine was never dropped and have the same issue...
I think that samsung will have to work on a software update for these two things

this issue happened with my galaxy tab 7 plus also

Turning off smart rotation helped for me.

[Q] Compass acts like a ceiling fan!

Good morning everyone! Just wanted to ask if anyone else has been having compass issues... specifically I noticed the compass on my HOX+ (AT&T) is all over the place looking more like a ceiling fan spinning wildly than it does a compass. Usually has all the directions wrong as well.
Anyone else?
Move the phone in a figure of 8 motion, while the compass app is open. This will reset it to default.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have actually been performing this action over and over again to no avail! Compass (and I've downloaded a few to check my results) won't point north... hell, won't point any one single direction for any length of time.
Noticed people in the HOX forums talking about an actual hardware connection issue. I think I'm going to Re-flash my device to make sure it's not some software i've installed... but from what I've seen so far I'm afraid it is a hardware issue.
Mostly just curious to see if anyone else has had this issue, even after normalizing the compass, before I start trying to get a new device.

Compass is inaccurate (30°)

Hello everyone!
I got my new Galaxy S3 last week and I am experiencing the first problems now.
The magnetic compass is about 30° inaccurate. Every time I am using Google maps it does not point in the direction i am looking to.
Take the attached picture for example.
The mobile is pointed directly along the street but the little blue dot does not point straight.
I have calibrated the compass several times using *#0*# and the App GPS STATUS, drawing multiple 8s in the air and turning it around the 3 axles.
I have these problems inside and outside. Sometimes when I am outside it shows me the correct direction but after making some steps and turning around it seems like the compass is getting confused again. I am using a rubber case without any metal attached to it and a Stock Android 4.1.2.
Do you have any advice for me or do you experience the same problems as I do?
I also checked the compass from a Galaxy S2, which was even more inaccurate and on my old Galaxy S Plus which shows the same strange things to me as my S3 (but I have to say that the compass is kind of messed since it fell into water).
I am running out of ideas what to do now...
Thank you in advance for your help!
Mine is fairly accurate, if I wave it around a couple of times first.
Can only suggest factory reset and flash a fresh stock 4.1.2 rom to test for hardware fault. Test before you restore or add any mods, if it's still the same in GPS status app then probably hardware.
Thanks for your reply.
The solution you suggested is the very last one i want to do. Since my device is not rooted it is a bit of work to restore all apps and settings. Maybe I should wait for the 4.3 update coming in november? And if this won't work either I should do a complete reset?
And I guess it shouldn't be the solution for you either waving your phone around every time you are using the compass, or?

[Q] Help! Replaced R cam, won't focus now, metropcs help!

Hey, I've read about 25 threads, none of which have helped solve my problem.
I wrecked a motorcycle with the phone in my back pocket. The crash killed the lens and the camera. Everything else works. I replaced the camera and lens with one from SW-BOX.com. The camera works now but wont focus. I assumed it was a firmware issue since everything else works. Due to a 'modified' status I wasn't able to upgrade my phone for about the last year. I finally got fed up with it and figured out how to side stepped that last night('official' status now). The phone is up-to-date now. However, the camera still wont focus.
The camera isn't in macro mode and all other camera features work fine. It simply wont focus. Even if I tap & hold the screen. Also the lens is oriented properly.
I've done a hard reset and a cache wipe. Most recently I was trying to figure out what my camera's firmware was, in hopes that (maybe) it could be updated to fix the issue. But every thread I've Googled has turned up this key code, *#34 blah blah blah that doesn't work on my phone. I assume that code only works on Verizon versions of the S3. I also tried searching the system/etc/firmware/ for rm***.bin files. I can't find any relevant *.bin files or file names starting with 'rm'.
Additionally I used an anti static bracelet to do the install. I didn't alter or damage anything in the phone during the installation. No cracked ribbon cables, scratched PCB's, short circuited terminals, altered soldier joints, loose wires, mal-fitting boards, everything is seated properly - - It was a clean install. I don't know WTH else it could be. It has to be software related.
So I'm lost here.
Questions:
1. How do I figure out my current camera firmware version?
2. Anyone have an suggestions on how to fix this?
Camera is faulty, return it to the seller.

Damn it, I was really hoping that wasn't the case... I've had it for to long to return it. I'll have to buy a new one if thats whats wrong.
Link to Rear camera supplier:
sw-box ((dot c o m )) /Replacement-Back-Camera-Module-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S3-i9300.html
"Compatible with:
■Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300
■Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-i9305
■Samsung Galaxy S3 SPH-L710 (Sprint)
■Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH-I535 (Verizon)
■Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-I747 (AT&T)"
I'm on metropcs, the 'model number' for the phone is labeled as "SCH-R530M" This information wasn't available when I bought mine previously. And I have no idea weather it is fully releveant or not in this case. Which is also why I was attempting to see what the firmware version for the camera was.
Anyone know how to do that on my phone? Or can give me a clue as to HOW I can figure it out on my own haha? Thanks for the help!

Gyroscope problems after latest update?

So i just wanted to know if anyone else out there/what i should do. I was one of the people whose edge stopped auto rotating but rather than exchange it i waited for a fix and i got one with this latest update. My phone auto rotates fine now but whenever playing a racing game or a game that uses the accelerometer it messes up.
For example, if im in a racing game (asphalt or real racing) my cars always turn to the right. Nothing makes it go left. So what should i do? (If anything) or is anyone else experiencing this?

i had the same auto rotation problem and i waited for the update as well, but it wasnt resolved when i did. (i have sprint sm-g925p) so i loaded up every rom we have and firmware and checked the hidden diagnostic menu (dial *#0*#) and every time the gyroscope was stuck on the x axis, i also checked the app checkmyandriod which shows a little better diagnostic on all the axis's the gyroscope uses and 2 of them were frozen on a number. so after all that troubleshooting bull**** i called up samsung (i would have called sprint but i bought the phone from a guy on ebay) and told them all the steps i went through and they informed me that many, many s6 edges internals were poorly put together and the fast charge fried the gyroscope when it heated up above a certain temp. the update only masks the true problem of crappy build quality the first few batches somehow had. my suggestion is to bite the bullet and send it in to replalce it, or just keep having the same problem for the life of the phone. Just my 2 cents though.

I'm not sure if my findings are rare or if it could be something more, but this is what I found:
I ran into this issue after doing a factory reset. The screen would no longer rotate.
Went out to the market to look for a third party app to check the software for the Gyro. I downloaded "Screen Rotation Control"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=bong.android.androidlock&hl=en
While running this app, the screen rotated no problem. So I uninstalled the app. Now my screen rotates like it did the day I got it.
Hope this might help someone else.

Fellas it seems to me that your gyroscope is fried, due to overheating issue when using fast charge. Mine works fine, but when I charge mine I make sure it is cool.

Auto-brightness / Proximity sensor issue

Hello,
I have a Samsung Galaxy s6 Edge G925F with custom rom, i have a problem with my sensor.
I turn my auto-brightness in ON and nothing chang, it's always stay at the same level of brightness, i tested it, if it was a hardware problem with calling "*#0*#" but not, it work perfectly in that.
and for the proximity sensor, when i call someone, the screen turn automaticaly in black, same think, i tried to test hardware, it's work, when i call someone with What's App for exemple, it's work, but it's not work with phone dialer.
(Sorry for my bad english, i'm french)
Can someone help me ? I tried an other rom, same problem, other bootloader / modem, same again.
Same issue here! Don't know what the problem is. Sensor is working when being tested, but somehow system is not receiving that info. Factory reset did not help either. I am on stock everything (5.1.1).
and you have no problem with brightness in mode auto ?
Auto brightness is not working either. It is always at same output value, no matter what I do. And also navigation buttons are not lighting up anymore.
Phone is all stock. Not sure if I should try with other roms...

Oh, we have the exact same problem, I just noticed that, my softkey lighting doesn't work too.
Have you got a problem like that, you put your headset's jack into your phone, and It's not detected by your phone ? İ have that issue too, I bought a jack, dock replacement for replace this part, I will tell you what happening next.
I saw your thread, did you disassembly your s6 ? By you or other guys.
If you find any solution to this problem please report it here and I will do the same. Hope we will be able to fix it .

I just checked this, and unfortunately it's not working...not recognized by the phone . Guess it's identical problem.
I did not touch any internals...just sent this phone for repairs, but they did not fix it because they found out that someone was already open it before. Now I do not know what to do.

Okay, then, The Phone was already opened before, I will tell you if I found something for that.

Yes, as I wrote in my original thread phone had a problem with faulty battery. It was refurbished phone and seller stated that it has 2 years of manufacturer warranty, but as it turned out warranty was void because someone damaged that battery before and tried to fix it with some tape.
btw. everything else was working fine before we sent the phone for service. When they returned it all these problems started. I have ordered new battery and will replace that by my own I guess because Samsung is not responding to our messages. I guess my girlfriend will have to live with these issues if we are not able to fix them...
if you think your auto brightness is not working check out this app. If that doesn't work then your sensors are faulty/defective and contact Samsung support or your authorized reseller

As we mentioned already...every sensor checking app is reporting that senors are working just fine. I removed the battery so can't try this app right now, but will definitely check as soon as I can, thanks.
Update regarding my situation: Since everything failed to fix this device or receive our money back, I decided to open the phone and check if anything else is wrong with it (besides battery) and guess what...audio jack port was completely broken. Plugging in headphones was working before it went to official repair centre, and now I know they broke it. But still I can't do anything about it because Samsung is refusing to fix it. My best bet is to replace that part together with battery and live with other issues.
Worst service I have ever experienced...
Ok so, I will receive this replacement part (jack) this week, I hope it will fix the other problems too.
I'll tell you what happen after that.

Please do! I also ordered whole usb connector board with headphone jack on it. Let's hope it will work.
btw. I just contented old battery back and tried this app. It is working great, so sensors are fine.
Hıı, I have A good news for you, I just replaced the usb, Jack part and all is working back, proximity sensor, auto brightness control and jack.
Good luck for you ?

Same here! Just replaced and packed everything up few minutes ago. Working great!! Finally! I'm glad we managed to fix this one ...
Just dry up the edges. Try to blow the corners. It is just a little bit wet because the corners have little gaps that let water and dust in. I blow dried my phone and it fixed the problem. If you try to wipe screen with water and it gets inside the edges, problem comes back again
Ich have the same problem. But how can it be a hardware issue when the sensors are working in test module? I don't want to send it in :/
Mine was having this exact problem and was solved by an update I didn't know existed. Go to where you find your updates and download any available. Mine worked great again afterwards. If that doesn't work, Try clearing your cache partition.
