[Q] Roaming on AT&T - HTC Amaze 4G

I've noticed that when I enter a T-Mobile 'dead zone' with my T-Mobile Amaze, it doesn't roam to other service providers despite enabling the roaming option.
My previous T-Mobile phones would allow roaming to AT&T, including data roaming, provided that I was in an AT&T service area, but apparently the specific SIM card provided with the Amaze does not allow roaming to AT&T. I even tried to force roam to the specific carrier, and a notification pops up saying that the SIM card does not allow connections to this network.
I find it strange that I was able to roam on AT&T before on my previous phones (such as the G1), but now I am not able to do so.
Any insight to this? I doubt that SIM unlocking the device would fix this. Maybe it would?

I know this isnt allowed on amaze custom roms because of its prelocked I tried myself with friends sim it worked once I used there sim for at&t.

I also have been wanting to bring this up to tmobiles attention. Not sure what you guys mean that Amaze not allowed to roam? My phone is unlocked and inserting an att sim only connects to att not tmobiles network. So that is not roaming.

I've noticed that the older T-Mobile SIM cards were able to roam (especially on the AT&T network) but it appears that the newer ones prevent that capability.

if y'all aren't able to roam with your Amaze ya need to contact TMO. I'm a long haul trucker (border-to-border mostly east of the I-35 corridor) and I have no problems connecting to other networks when outside of a TMO coverage area including connecting to AT&T (huge areas in rural OH and WV) even connecting and getting 3G speeds on AT&T's net.

Same! When I visit my parental units in NE Ohio I roam on AT$T almost constantly with my amaze. Usually what I have to do is enable/disable airplane mode and it will connect automatically. (You can't just manually select AT$T, it has to be done automatically by the phone, otherwise you'll get a registration error)
Hope this helps! Otherwise you should just call TMO and complain.

Does roaming charge you extra on your bill? And do you notice data speed differences while on other networks? That's my noob question for the week.

In 8 years I've never been charged and I drive all over the country. Some of the towers won't let me go over 2G and some let me on at a slow 3G (I have noticed their 3G isn't as fast as ours)

For calling and texting? No charge at all. Just your normal limits on minutes, etc. As for data, they implemented a policy that depends on how much data you have. I get 2gb of 4g, and for my plan I get 50mb of data roaming, after that they cut you off from using data while roaming. You will still be able to do calling/texting however, and you will/should not be charged for roaming within the country under any circumstances.
Oh, and... BAM!

Hmmm. So just to see for myself I threw my T-Mobile sim card into my old SIM/BL-unlocked Sony Xperia Play 4G from AT&T, and look what I did. Turns out it really is the sim card blocking access. It seems Tmo only lets you roam when they see fit, as in, you can't "choose" AT&T's network, it just becomes available if your Tmo network is unavailable for a length of time. I think. Maybe.

I'm wondering. Is your T-Mobile's SIM card a WiFi calling capable SIM card? I'm suspecting that the newer cards do block access. When I had the old (non WiFi calling capable SIM card) on my G1, I could choose which carrier I wanted to use, including AT&T if I wanted to roam. This was nice, as sometimes I'm in a location where T-Mobile has like 1 bar of GPRS/edge service, and the AT&T would have several bars of 3G service.

Yes, I have WiFi calling through my sim card. It doesn't charge me minutes ^_^ I wonder why they would do that, though. Very odd.

My rezound drops 3g at random moments.?

Hey folks,
I have been checking all over the web, and have not found enough useful info. My 3g signal drops out at random times when I know I have a good signal. I have put it in only cdma mode. Done all the other stuff, and it still does this. I live in a no 4G area, and never had problems like this with my incredible. I am afraid it is my phone, but I think it is the network. I haven't rooted yet because of this. Has anybody else had this problem? All responses are welcome. Thanks

Some people are saying that since our connection is verified with the sim card that it is a network problem caused by issues Verizon is having. Watch the web when people state they have 4G issues and you are probably going to see 3G outages at the same time.

This may help you. Whenever there is an outage this lets me get 3g at least

I'm having the same issue...3G only area though being restricted to 1x where I should deff have 3G...
I should add that evdo is extremely slow at changing from 3g to 4g but if you're not in 4g coverage I had more reliable 3g using evdo.

Ugh, I'm battling with this issue as well. Rebooting doesn't get my 3g back. Is this a software issue? I'm rooted with a custom kernel/rom, but I had this issue stock.

This. I read in our forums that because LTE phones use a SIM card, they have to go through a type of verification process with the network to latch onto LTE signal. As a result, when this is happening the 3G signal bottoms out because the phone is trying to latch onto LTE. The same is true for going from LTE to EVDO as well.
Something along those lines, at least

Have you tried replacing the SIM? If at all possible try walking out of Verizon without them activating the new SIM. Seems when ever I'm at a Verizon store someone is always waiting to have a 4G device activated. I had one instance with a SIM swap that took 30 mins @ the store. Now I just ask for a SIM replacement and tell them that I would activate via phone support when I get home. In my past experience, activation happen a lot faster away from a Verizon store loaded with queued activation requests.

I've had this issue since the Vigor came out. In 3g, I'd lose data completely. Only a reboot or airplane mode would fix it. I had new Vigor sent to me and the same problem. I've been through several sim cards ( I switch between my Vigor and Nexus often). I've talked to VZW more times than I care to mention and they've had no answers for me. They even sent techs to my area to see if it was a network problem. No luck. Just have to live with it I guess. My nexus doesn't do it. Still prefer the Vigor though.

I had the same problem...3G dropping randomly thoughout last weekend. I thought it was my Rezound so I activated my Droid Razr. Same thing. I'm in Southern Oregon. I called the local Verizon corporate store and asked if there were 3G problems and they didn't know. I think they really are a bit brain dead anyway. I can say I've two of their top line phones phones and both losing 3G once or twice an hour was really pissing me off. I NEED data, I was ready to cancel my service (unlimited data) and go with Sprint but thought better of it as I'm getting 3G constant now. Maybe Verizon has worked this out, I sure hope so.
I run juicedefender, which kills data when screen is off. I wonder if this has to do with it? Doesn't happen often, 3g will come on without a reboot after a few minutes.

I really do not think Juicedefender is the problem. I have BatteryCalibration (need to be rooted) and never had a problem. I haven't read anything about Juicedefender being the issue. I think it's Verizon, in fact with 2 phones having the same dropping in and out of 3g I sure of it.
Also a few minutes is not even close to acceptable to wait for data. I need data constantly, if your using Google Nav and you lose data your toast, streaming music your toast and I can think of a ton other reasons 3g should never be lost.
Most of Sunday and today I have not had an issue...makes you wonder.
I was using juice defender. I was also having problems with dropping 3 and 4g. Try not running it. Since I stopped I haven't had any drops.

From my understanding, it connects thru evdo. The Resound tries to connect thru 4g first, struggles, forcing 3g off, and in the process drops data. I take no credit for this. Pwned posted the link I think. You would get a better understanding if you read the link on page one. Hope that helps......

LTE Test?

Just picked up a note on ebay, excited to get it. However since I live in what is only the 5th largest city in the US, ATT obviously sees no reason to have LTE here. Anyone have any ideas of how I would check if LTE is working? If I have ATT insurance will it cover this phone?
In unrelated note are ICS roms pretty stable? I'd prefer to jump to that but am not an early rom adopter.
If its an ATT phone you bought off Ebay then it should just work, the only way you can see if its even an option is to go into your mobile networks settings and switch it to GSM/HSPA/LTE mode, (probably better for you to switch it to GSM/HSPA until you do have an LTE area.
If you bought the International phone, I don't think LTE is even an option (from what i've read).
As for warranty related questions I couldn't help ya with that.
If it's an AT&T phone it says (edit)4GLTE on GB on the status bar when you are connected to an LTE network.
For warranty information I would contact AT&T. I'm about to drop my warranty through AT&T and go somewhere else because $10 a month and then a $200 deductible for the phone is crappy (I didn't realize this until after I got the insurance when purchasing the phone because I was too excited just to get the phone). Some other places (still reading reviews) offer you to pay a one time fee for however many years and then the dedictible, which is not $200.

I believe he's referring to the grand City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia.
There is no way to test LTE without being in an LTE area, but there a few locations a couple hours North and South on 95 if you really want to know if it's working.
With the AT&T Note, you have to have the newest generation SIM card otherwise you won't get HSPA data either.

Your SIM card needs to have LTE provisioning enabled on it for it to authenticate with the LTE network properly (allowing you to use it). Might be easier to go to a local AT&T store and have them give you a new SIM and make sure they enable LTE on your data plan for that particular SIM.

Why does 3g on the evo lte suck soooooo bad??

I was so tired of not even being able to listen to pandora with this evo lte I activated my og evo on another line I have and in all the same places and on 3g only it has no problems whatsoever. Does anyone know what the deal is?? Is there a solution? If it werent for the battery life I would just stick with the og evo and use this evo lte as a paper weight. Honestly, the way it is looking this phone will be obsolete by the time lte comes my way anyway. Should I just go back to the og evo? Any ideas or comments? Thanks.
I guess there is no answer from anyone other than bs sprint says "they are working on the towers in your area". If that is the case then why isnt my city even on the list for any of the rounds of upgrades and why does my og evo work fine?
I guess everyone who is getting lte soon doesnt care anyway. What about everyone else?? Am I the only one still with this issue?
I've told this story before, but I had the same thing happen here in LA. They are upgrading my towers, which will take the obligatory 4-6 weeks, so I complained loud and often enough to Sprint, and got a free AIRAVE, until the towers are live. Try that! also, are u running a ROM with the latest OTA baked in, which includes fixes for network data, WiFi, etc.? HTH!

make sure you're not on the sprint proxy as well. Its been known to cause streaming issues.
Im running the latest version of meanrom which as far as I know has all the latest updates. How do I know if Im on the sprint proxy? Sorry if that is a n00b question, Im a n00b. Thanks for the replies.
BTW, I have wifi at the house so I dont think an airave well help much. It is mainly everywhere else I go that doesnt have wifi. What really sucks is we actually have a decent wimax network here. Which is another reason Im considering just going back to og evo.
If it's the tower maintenance then I guess they started working on the towers in my area the minute I activated my EVO.

exactly this. what are you thinking? Going to an old/different phone? Leaving Sprint? or just waiting for LTE? To me waiting seems like the worst but easiest thing to do lol.

Try this. Go into system settings and select CDMA Only.
Reboot the phone and enjoy.
I have found that with my EVO LTE, keeping it on CDMA / LTE enables the device to get stuck with no data or on 1x.
Seems HTC/ SPrint/ whom ever didnt test this stuff that well OR its so new they have not figured it out yet.
Im in Dallas, a city with first launch LTE.
I have done lots of testing and found that the towers with the eHRDP are causing my phone to look for LTE, then if i get to a legacy tower which has not been touched the device is having a hard time logging into the EVDO data. WHen it gets like this i cant go back to either. I tested CDMA only for 5 days and found i had no issues with data.
Within 10 hours of switching to EVDO/LTE i got stuck on 1x again.
I used Mobile Signal Widget Pro, Coverage Map, NetMonitor and OpenSignal apps to help me determine what type of tower, what type of data connections and knew at home and work what types of data speeds are typical for me.
Try CDMA only and see if it works.

Thanks, I had been on CDMA only and still having problems. I doube checked after reading this though and realized I must not have done it after fleashing this last rom. I have it on CDMA only again and hopefully things will improve. Thanks for the reminder.
Weird, I've had good luck with the 4g LTE's 3G connection. In fact, it has been faster than on my OG Evo 4g Supersonic.

I hate to say it but even the Airave doesn't help. I have had an airave for about a year now. (I work with Sprint Business because I manage my companies Sprint Account and found a number to call specifically for free airaves). But it worked flawlessly with my OG EVO. with my EVO LTE it still disconnects and drops calls and is terrible! sometimes I have better reception without the airave.
On a side note, the Airave does NOT help data at all only Voice Quality (sometimes). Also when you leave the area of an airave you WILL drop the call because it can not switch towers.
okay that is all for my airave rant!

Mobile Signal Widget is a Widget. It will not show up in your app drawer.
you need to press and hold on the screen and select to add a widget.

My 3g works better roaming when roaming than on sprint network
I think the radio is this phone is way better than my 3D was. My area has been getting better as well. Still needs a lot of work. I took this speed test a few days ago at a crowded restaurant in the early evening. I never saw 2,000+ on my 3D let alone any phone on Sprint in the evening or day time.

A side note, I did remove the Sprint proxy but don't really ever get 2+ down except for 3 in the morning when no one is on the network.
There is nothing you can do about it, it's Sprint's Any Day Now Network. I haven't gotten above 100kbps in my area in over two years. Prior to that, before everyone started switching to smartphones, I could pull over 2mbps all day long.
The fixes listed above won't help, you can't pull any more data from the network than the network has capacity. And the excuses that sprint gives you about tower upgrades are bull. Unless you see someone working on your tower, don't believe them, they will say this to every single customer around the country just to make them think it will get better. I call/chat with them every few weeks, and have been given that bulls--t excuse for 2 years now.
I'm not happy with your airave rant Having one shipped shortly and was hoping it would be a lightyear improvement over my current reception in my home (Not Sprint's fault, since I've never had good reception even with AT&T and Verizon). Hopefully my experience will be a little bit more productive

VZW Note 3 N900V Fully Functional on T-Mobile 4G lte (band 4)

FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST.
Hi everyone,
Finally managed to do what I was trying to accomplish on my VZW Galaxy S3 for almost a year.
I'm not sure if anyone else has already accomplished this or not. If anyone has, then sorry about the duplicate post (even though I haven't found any posts specifically describing how to do it).
It took me some research to see that both t-mobile and vzw run on band 4 block f (1700mhz-f), so I thought they should both be able to tune to the same lte band. Even though I was able to get H+ from a t-mobile prepaid sim to work on the vzw note 3, I was still not completely satisfied, so I kept at it till lte finally worked too.
I do give credit to the thread about "All things service mode" which described how to enable the service mode menu and then how to turn on lte band 4.
This DOES confirm that by turning on lte band 4 under service menu, it does really turn on, no firmware update is required to enable the additional layer of the lte band.
It's almost 4 a.m. so I'll get to the details a little later, but just wanted to post this as soon as I got it working, I know it'll make lots of people happy.
I got 28 mbps down and 6 mbps up on t-mobile where I get about 8m and 2m with vzw lte, respectively.
Look at the screen shots below. I did a little research and was able to get that annoying "non-Verizon sim" warning off too, but credit for that goes to someone else here on xda, I didn't figure that out, I will just relay that here for a one stop shop on how to use a t-mobile or other GSM sims in the vzw version. I will link to that post later when I have more time. Anyway, see below and let me know of your thoughts, I will add more details later.
DIRECTIONS:
Do this at your own risk, if any anything goes wrong, don't blame me for it. Make a nandroid backup before you start. To get 4G lte to work on t-mobile, and to remove the continuous sim warning, you'll have to be rooted. Just to get 4G hspa+ to work, you don't need root, but you'll have the annoying sim reminder/warning in your notification all the time.
Go to settings>more settings>mobile networks>network mode and change to "Global" mode. Also turn off your mobile data at this point.
Turn off your phone and replace your vzw sim w/ a t-mobile sim with prepaid or postpaid 4G service. Turn the phone back on. When it has finished booting up, you should have basic gsm service on t-mobile, you'll get a warning about a non-Verizon sim, don't worry about that right now, it won't hurt anything.
Now if you want t-mobile 4G lte and you have root, follow the thread for All things "ServiceMode" related to turn on lte band 4 through service mode. Restart the phone after enabling lte band 4.
Go to "mobile networks>access point names" under more settings, click the "+" on the bottom to add an apn, call it T-Mobile LTE and type "fast.t-mobile.com" without the quotes under APN. Leave everything else blank (you can add some of the other stuff later if you want to get picture messaging to work). Click the menu button and hit save. Once you're out, make sure you click on the green radial button to select the new APN you just created.
Now exit settings and turn on your mobile data. Give it a minute. You should get the 4G lte symbol after a little bit. You may have to restart the phone once for it to work.
If you're not in a good t-mobile 4G lte coverage area and just want the traditional hspa+ option, follow the same steps, but DO NOT enable lte band 4, and instead use "epc.tmobile.com" for apn. This way you won't need to be rooted. If you are already rooted and did enable lte B4, just switch the phone to gsm/umts mode under network mode, that will disable lte.
Now if you want to go the extra mile and remove the sim warning, get Titanium Backup from Play Store and freeze the app "Setup Wizard", the app with the "magic wand" above the red "check mark". You'll have to be rooted to do that.
If you follow similar steps, you can also get AT&T hspa+ to work, obviously with an AT&T sim and AT&T apn settings ("pta" for the apn, but AT&T has their lte on a different band, so you can't get AT&T 4G lte to work on this phone. For their hspa+, the steps are the same as for t-mobile hspa+, except for the actual apn settings.

Wow! Nice! I'm actually considering dumping verizon along with my unlimited data as Verion's network in my area (Nashville-Bellevue, TN) has progressively gotten worse over time. I used to get 3-4 bars with 4-10 Mbps down about a year and a half ago to 2-3 bars with 0.5-3 Mbps these past few months; now this past week, It's dropped to only 1 bar, and I can barely load google.com, I can't even run speed tests anymore. Verizon just told me that service in my neighborhood fluctuates and told me to purchase a $300 network extender..
Please tell me how you were able to get this.. I've already enabled Band 4 LTE on my phone hoping Nashville would have verizon's new AWS spectrum, but nothing yet. I'm sick of Verizon and I think I am ready for change, would definitely love to test this out on prepaid before I make my final decision.
:good:
Is there a particular reason you wouldn't want to just get the t mobile version note 3 (unlock able bootloader). Perhaps I'm missing something but is there any benefit to the Verizon version. Now I would love to get the t mobile phone working on Verizon on the other hand.
Since the device is factory unlocked for operation on GSM US carriers, of course it'll work on T-Mobile as they're transmitting LTE on Band 4.
It's been discussed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48760230&postcount=221 but keep in mind that Verizon Note 3 variant doesn't support T-Mobile's main 3G/Voice/HSPA+42 frequency which is AWS (2100/1700). It does support T-Mobile's secondary HSPA+21 in the PCS band, which is also where their GSM/EDGE services reside.
No hacking is necessary unless your device doesn't have Band 4 turned on (for some reason). My device came with Band 4 enabled, but it came with the latest radio as well...

I wasn't really saying anything about any hacking, but mine did not come with lte band 4 enabled, I'm guessing a lot of other people's Note 3's probably don't either.
Also, I'm not that surprised or exited that it works with their 1900 mhz hspa+, but I wasn't expecting the t-mobile version of lte to work with a cdma phone's lte. And it didn't right off the start, it required a little tweak to the apn setting. Anyway, it may be obvious to those who know about lte bands, but the average user may not be aware of that, so I thought I'd post this so people could use this thread to use the t-mobile prepaid plans on their vzw Note 3 if they wanted to.
Please look at the first post for directions to be added.

The reason is a lot of people who want to have the option to be on the Verizon network because it has very good coverage compared to the other carriers, also want to be able to use it on a GSM carrier's network, such as t-mobile, because they have unlimited or cheaper lte plans, however, Verizon is a cdma carrier, and it is usually not possible to get a GSM phone, even if it is unlocked, to work on a cdma network, so buying a t-mobile version would only allow it to work on t-mobile, not on Verizon, but the Verizon version works on both. Also, if it works on the t-mobile pcs band H+, it will work on overseas gsm carriers' networks, so local sims from there could be used for those who travel there and have Verizon, as opposed to expensive roaming charges. Hope that explains it and answers your questions.

For those who have the Dev Edition Verizon Note 3, do you think flashing a t-mobile baseband (modem) or a modified "hybrid" modem would enable the AWS band for hspa+ 42? I'm basically asking if you think the SM-N900V version Note 3 has native support for the AWS band even though it may not be enabled for Verizon, since it must have the 1700 mhz antenna if it has lte band 4? I know lte and wcdma are different, but as far as RF goes, the ability to receive 1700 mhz is already there. That would be kinda like the original att Note that had support for AWS but had to have a t-mobile modem flashed before it was enabled. As I've heard, the DE Verizon Note 3 is very similar to the t-mobile Note 3, at least for roms and kernels.

That is a very interesting topic especially if we consider that AWS transceiver and signal path already exists. If we look at the FCC antenna diagram for SM-N900V we can see that B4 antenna is shared with CDMA at the top left corner, which could indicate that would be B4 UMTS path as although it's not displayed since the B4 UMTS certification hasn't been requested by Verizon.

Left side is the B4 Rx diversity required for LTE MIMO operation, and at the right side is B4 dedicated Tx which is a nice touch.
This is what's been tested and certified for btw:
You could always try, but obviously be prepared for it not to work, etc...

I'll sell you my unlimited VZW line for literally $0.01
Contract is up in the 2nd week of this February...And I'm doing this exact thing with my N3. In fact, I already have the TMO SIM for $30/mo plan activated and tested it all out today.
I don't know if you can assume liability of a line once the contract is up, since it would be month-2-month at that point, but if it's possible, I'd let mine go for a penny.

No, no other carrier's phone or device will work on Verizon. In general, no gsm device will work on any cdma network, because cdma devices have to be approved by that provider to work on their network. Any unlocked gsm or cdma device with a sim will work on a GSM network.
To add T-Mobile APNs wouldn't it just be easier to replace the apn-config.xml file. Easy to do if you are rooted and have the app root explorer or something similar. Imnuts has one pre-built with pretty much every apn in the world already in it. Worked great for my Note 2, should be fine for the Note 3. Heres the link to imnuts post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2044449
Just tried my friends Straight Talk ATT sim card and I only got H+ but, it was a little faster than my Verizon LTE..... In this location. And should mention my signal was at -78dbm vs Verizon @ -98dbm. Glad when my contract is up.
---------- Post added at 12:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:30 AM ----------
Too, I wanted to add that I powered my phone down and swapped out sim cards. Powered back on and was able to add my APN by hitting the plus at the bottom of the screen. I did use chain fires Region lock away app. Not sure this is 100% relative to the thread but wanted to share. And if it's not, then I do apologize for hi jacking.
Im assuming if I switch to metro pcs with a sim then ill be able to use their 4g? Its basically tmobile right?
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
I took the plunge and paid for a month of service on tmobile. Unfortunately the best I got was H+. I tried to manually force band 4 LTE, selected cdma, lte in the settings. According to the coverage map im in a 4g LTE area. I drove around a couple of cities and I have not been able to get it to show. I'm also located near downtown los angeles. I can't stand the crazy latency and super slow service so the sim is going into the trash.
Can you explain what I have to do a little better? I just got a Verizon note 3 from someone and trying to use MetroPCS sim.

Is there a particular reason you wouldn't want to just get the t mobile version note 3 (unlock able bootloader). Perhaps I'm missing something but is there any benefit to the Verizon version. Now I would love to get the t mobile phone working on Verizon on the other hand.

Is this even possible? I fully agree that getting verizon to work on tmobile phone would be a better route than vise-versa
I currently own both and have both services. I wanted to use my tmobile phone so i would not have to buy the verizon phone. Apparently it seems that the tmobile phone does not have what it takes to run cdma.
Sorry if im wrong here guys, ive been out of the phone game for a bit. I always thought the issue lied with verizon restricting service to native esn's/imei's on the network. If vzw allowed foreign esns on their network, any unlocked world phone would work.

Ok I took the plunge... I hate verizon but love my current note 3 so....
I bought an T-Mobile Prepay SIM card, activated 1 month of service.
I get three bars signal but never get data. I can make calls and send sms but no data
I tried both APN's in OP.
Any input?
