Disabling ALL roaming? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's relatively easy to disable data roaming on an Android device in the "Wireless & networks" settings section, but the phone still tries to connect to other services via roaming like voice and SMS. Is there a way to disable ALL roaming whatsoever? I know about airplane mode, but that completely disables all connectivity, and it's also annoying to have to remember to keep turning airplane mode off and on again when I enter/leave the vicinity of this network. I'd like to be able to connect to my network but not allow any roaming.
Why disable? Becuase the network offering the roaming isn't one I trust, as I think it may be intercepting and recording my data. So I don't want my phone to use it.
It seems Windows Mobile has a relatively straightforward to do this by selecting "Don't roam". If Android doesn't have any option to do this (no, not Airplane mode - that disables ALL comms!), then that is a rather annoying lack of a feature!

This might not be the answer you are looking for but your operator should provide some means to prevent roaming completely; your phone then would not be able to access any other network for any service apart from emergency call.

can you switcg data off on 2g networks

Hi Guys, I got fond of the Hero a lot. and requested a friend to get one for me on his way from london (sim free, unlocked)
1 thing concerns me is the data consumption over 2g networks as its quite expensive here
I need to know if I can stop data transfer without affecting calling ability???
this is crucial in my decision to buy
Appreciate your clear and quick responses.

Settings > Wireless Controls > uncheck "Mobile Network" > Qapl'a!
you can even put a Mobile Network Toggle on the desktop to just switch it on and off.
Whilst off, you can still send and receive SMS and calls, but not MMS.

does shutting mobile network shut data only?
the toggle is native
no you don't need to root the phone
yes, it only shuts off mobile data (including MMS), this is why it's called mobile data, and not airplane mode. Wifi is unaffected.
Data Roaming
Hi everyone,
We've just started using the Hero at work as a business phone, a lot of our employees travel internationally on a regular basis.
Using our old WinMo phones, picking up emails whilst roaming was automatically disabled by default but could be manually sync'd with our exchange server if required.
On the Hero, there doesn't seem to be a similar function. You have to go in to the Mobile Network settings and disable 'Data Roaming'.
My question is, if I disable 'Data Roaming' but still have 'Enable Always-on Mobile Data' active, will any downloaded apps still be able to connect and update i.e Twitter gadget for instance? Or does disabling 'Data Roaming' stop data connections full stop?
The ideal scenario for us would be something that is quick and easy to turn off (or turn on) that would prevent any data connection but will let us open up the Mail app and sync manually with our exchange server if required (like we could with WinMo).
I currently have the Toggle Selector app on my home screen to quickly get to the Mobile Network settings. I'm just not sure what to enable/disable in the settings menu that will let me get mails manually and prevents all other data connections.
Any advice or suggestions would be more than welcome. It's got us scratching our heads a little and is stopping us from upgrading other staff phones as we don't want to end up with a phone we can't use as a business tool internationally as it costs us the earth in data roaming charges.
The easiest way i can think of would be to have the toggle on screen, and when you want to sync, you turn it on, manually refresh the emails and then turn it off again.
if you have data roaming blocked, it will override the 'always on mobile data' setting, so no, when roaming is turned off, nothing will connect when you are abroad.
honestly though, android is not ready for business really, which is why HTC are pitching it at the consumer market mainly.
I am in the same position, just want to be clear, with the "toggle" will it stop all data? (including browser, mms texts, apps updating) i only want these when i have wifi.
thanks in advance
to make it absolutely clear:
When at home,. turn mobile data off and NOTHING can access GPRS.
When roaming on another network when abroad, turn data roaming off and GPRS is blocked. To access GPRS, you have to turn data roaming AND mobile data on to access GPRS.
The Data roaming toggle has precedence over the Mobile data toggle.
Thank you, appreciate it
I have noticed toggling mobile networks occurs twice. What I mean is, after toggling a couple of times, I cannot seem to coonnect to 3g anymore? In that case I always have to restart my phone. Anyone experiencing this issue? It could be a bug. I used To have a blackberry bold and that bug was fixed by an update

[Q] ENABLING data in roaming? HD2 UK Tmo

Hi there,
I have searched and searched but I can't find anything. I know it's an unusual request but is there an app (or even some simple built-in functionality or a reg tweak) that allows you to enable all data roaming on the HTC?
The reason for this is that, in UK T-Mo and Orange are now network sharing. I am on T-Mobile but when my reception is low the service switches to Orange.
Problem is that my phone thinks it is roaming when it switches to Orange and this messes with my data services. I cannot figure out which of those services are set to disable data in roaming aas I'm not sure where to look.
I'd be happy to set all of my apps to download while roaming as I have NoDataInRoam installed for when I go abroad. The rest of the time I do want to download data when 'roaming'!!
Any help anyone? I know it seems dumb, sorry.

Have a look in the settings tab in sense, there is an option for Data Services. Go to each service you use and enable the check box Download When Roaming. Hope this helps.

[Q] Q: Stuck on "Airplane Mode" ?

Hi guys!
This happened to me suddenly. A few hours ago I was able to get signal from my carrier, but then I suddenly can't send and receive calls or text messages. I tried to do the Airplane mode switch to refresh my registration on the network, to no avail.
I rebooted my phone then I cannot get any signal from my carrier anymore. I checked my Wireless settings and Mobile networks is grayed off, with Airplane mode checkbox ticked. I enabled WiFi and it got WiFi, so its not really on airplane mode! Then I untick the Airplane mode checkbox, its stuck on "Enabling Wireless Connections". If I wait a few minutes I will get a signal (Airplane mode unticked) but it still cannot send and receive calls.
If I switch the sim to another phone, it sends and receives just fine.

Sorry to hear that. It seems like something is wrong with your phone's radio since sim switching didn't work. About the part you stated: "I enabled WiFi and it got WiFi, so its not really on airplane mode!", is not true. You can/are able to use WiFi even if airplane mode in enabled. I do it all the time. Have you tried going in the "call" settings and checking those, maybe configuring the cell broadcast settings? Do so and I hope you'll solve your problem by this way or otherwise.
I doubt there is a problem with the radio. It's probably just a bug with the ROM.
You should try a clean install to see if the problem disappears.

[Q] Unselect "Use only 2g networks" causes phone to loss connection to network

[Q] Unselect "Use only 2g networks" causes phone to loss connection to network
Since Monday my Galaxy S2 can't use 3g networks anymore.
It only connects to my carrier if "Use only 2g networks" option is selected, otherwise it won't give me the possibility to make calls.
Anyone has a clue about what should be ruining the radio communication?
Is there a way to try to "reset" the carrier configs to the default?
I mean, I hadn't change a thing but on Monday my carrier had some signal issues in my area and I think this could be the reason of my phone's confusion.
More than likely carrier issues.
Please contact your provider to see when the work / fault will be completed.
Please update me with your progress xd, who is the carrier by the way?
fkofilee,
But if the phone can't connect to 3g, it should still connect to 2g networks, right?
I mean, unchecking the option should not make the phone lose signal, because 3g would be only another way to reach the carrier.
I'll try with a SIM card from another carrier to double check.
The carrier ir OI, I'm at Campinas-São Paulo-Brasil.
Unchecking the option will disconnect the phone signal very briefly.
Please ask your carrier tech team to give you carrier APNs info.
That way you can be sure the info your getting is correct.
Also check your APN settings...
All of sudden everything is back to normality.
Surely it was carrier's fault.
Thanks for the answers!

S9+ will only make/receive voice calls in duo mode

Just what the title says. My phone tells callers that I'm not accepting calls and when I attempt to make calls it simply refuses to do so or displayed a "call ended" message without ever dialing the other person. Everything else works fine and I can even make voice calls if I use duo mode instead of mobile. I can also receive calls if the caller uses duo mode.
Have been through everything except an actual reset. Unable to do that since the phone was a hand-me-down and I don't know the PIN. I've about reached the point where I do a hard reset manually but I hate to lose my data. Does anyone have anything I could try to either bypass or recover the PIN or something I could use to get mobile mode to work again?
Your sure you have service? If you do, do you have credit? Both of those would prevent you making calls. You can still use Duo if your on WiFi or you have a data only service. If you are showing that your connected to the network and you are certain you have minutes in your plan or credit available then you will need to call your network provider so they can see if there's any network issues preventing your calls. Check the network operators status page to see if there's issues in your area.
@Nofsdad
It appears that when using a Galaxy S9+ with ATT service the phone is unable to do VoLTE
The way that I was able to have internet on the phone and voice calling was to go into the APN and set the Network Mode to 3G/2G (auto connect)
That fixed it for me. Still pissed off that I can't use LTE but oh well it will work until I upgrade the phone.

Hello, I have an unlocked s9 that is going through a similar issue in not being able to make or receive calls. Can you let me know how you got the APN settings for 3G/2G? Going to APN settings I only see the nxgenphone setting open and active, which I heard was for LTE.
Also, can you let me know what setting it has to be in the 4636 mobile network settings in order to restore data? Thanks
