[Q] YP-GB70EW(B) 16GB - Softbrick ??? help needed - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Hey Guys,
This is my first post. I have had my SGP for about a year and I thought I would try and install a custom rom. But I think it may have soft bricked my device and I am not sure how to fix it. I was hoping someone may be able to help.
Device: YP-GB70EW(B) 16GB
First tried to flash with this firmware: Eryigit_Rom_PDA_YP-G70_G70ZCKPA.R.3.5-Defult
Odin seemed to flash it fine but when the device rebooted it just loaded the samsung screen and stopped.
so then I tried to go back to stock firmware:CODE_G70ZCKPA_CL767152_REV01_user_low_ship_HOME.tar.md5
and I get the same issue. right how I have the device pungged into my computer and it is on the battery charge screen.
can someone please help me twith a step by step how to fix. I would reely like to get a the first rom I tried working on my device.
Thanks,
Andrew

Well you softbricked your device because y ou took a rom that's not meant for your device. You have a YP-GB70 which is the korean galaxy player 5.0. The erygit and the stock rom are for YP-G70 US and Intl so you will need to find a stock korean rom in order to get it back to normal.

Have you tried wiping data and and do a factory reset in recovery mode BEFORE flashing the firmware?

Thanks I will give the korean stock rom a try.
I thought that Intl was for everywhere but the US.
does anyone know of a good rom like Eryigit that will work on my device?

no as I followed the odin flashing instructions that where in the Eryigit rom thread and it said do do the wipe after flashing and some people said that it did not even need to be done at all.
but how I am past that point as the device will not boot past the samsung screen (I assume the samsung screen is the bootloader)

Thanks,
But how do I do a wipe before flashing with odin if all I have is the samsung boot screen. (I can also get it into download mode)

wipe is done outside odin.*easy"
push and hold together home+vol+power for some seconds then follow given instruction.

Hey lolo9393,
once I get my device back up on stock I would like to try a good custom rom I have noticed you chatting on some of the other threads and was hoping you can point me to a good stable rom that I can install (ICS would be nice but not required)

No problem,
In case you are ready for custom roms you can investigate the very light and fast* Rice Rom With Ktensi White Wine Theme Rom Build2.
It is rooted and has no more bloatware.
http://soon-s.tistory.com/m/post/view/id/4
Other good choice is the GreenROM HD4.0. It is rooted, fully fonctionnal and bug free.
http://greenview.tistory.com/31
But if you really 'need' ICS ,for me not mature enough and buggy, you can try (at your own risk) this was done by our korean friends.
http://greenview.tistory.com/39
let me know the progress!
anyway, my own feeling about this "very good" device and the peacefull use i have of it (I am not a furious gamer) I don't need ICS, only root is required and mandatory.
regards

I agree about ICS (I hope we will see some more options in the future)
I also just need root, want to get rid of the bloat, I would also like to be able to mount a usb flash drive that would be nice.

Hey lolo9393,
Sorry to keep bugging you I am just trying to dig my seft out of this mess....
I flashed "CODE_GB70KRKPL_CL985547_REV01_user_low_ship_HOME.tar" and I have got closer but it is still not working now my device gets to the samsung boot screen then it will play the little startup tune and display the "Galaxy Player" label but then it keeps looping on the "Galaxy Player" label.
I did do the wipe data/factory reset and the wipe cashe partition before applying the rom.
when I wipe data I get a bunch of errors:
- e:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p16 (/data)
- e:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p14 (/dbdata)
- e:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p15 (/cashe)
when I wipe cashe:
- e:failed to mount /cashe (no such file or diectory)
- e:Can't mount /cashe/recovery/log
- e:Can't open /cashe/recovery/log
- e:failed to mount /cashe (no such file or diectory)
- e:Can't mount /cashe/recovery/last_log

also do you know of another source for the "Rice Rom With Ktensi White Wine Theme Rom Build2" I click on the TAR image on the page and the link looks to be dead

You are at the point I was six months ago while "playing" with new kernel that was supposed to give me many advantages. What i got was a permanent hard brick with the same advices "devblock not formated".
seems you have some memory block "un formated". It is not related to the pit file, don't touch it please!!!
only means is to put your hands into the grease (don't no if this sentence is english but sound well)
go there and do it in a calm and peacefull area!

Thanks,
now this makes me nervous, as I have no knowledge of linux.
I read the thread you provided and if I am right I need to follow th links in the post (#39) that you provided.
I will give this a try and let you know....

Hey lolo9393,
I am not having much luck here, I have installed the SDK tried to run "adb shell" and I get "devices not found". I also tried "adb devices" and no devices are listed. The only way I can get a device to show in the list is when my device is in recovery mode but "adb shell" will still not work.
Any idea?

I have a yp-gb70'stock firm
Sent from my galaxy s using XDA

I know this is "the not easy step" to start because we are not skilled enough.
It is like the drivers are not installed.
have a check again, procedure did work well for me.
seems important

ok I am back, but I want to be rooted....
It does not look like the "Rice Rom With Ktensi White Wine Theme Rom" is available from the link you gave me. (click on the TAR image and I get a 404)
do you have another source?
Again thanks for you help, I would not have been able to do it with out you

Congratulations man,
Just for my knowledge, what was your issue with adb?
What you need is official KPL FW and the rooting kernel, it is what I have today and makes me satisfy I will go with ICS when fully debuged, no hurry!
I have found, thanks to our Russian colleagues, this very good and well organised post:

4pda.ru is awesome site, we have much to learn from them; only detail is I don't read russian (sadly said)
You have everything needed available here.
In case you really want the "Rice Rom With Ktensi White Wine Theme Rom" lauch a request in the forum to find a new link.

[Q] 2.2.1 - complications on downgrade and root.

Phone: LG P500h - ANDROID v 2.2.1 buildnumber FRG83.
Country: Brazil
Anyway, what I know is that i have to downgrade it to 2.2 in order to be able to root. I've looked through a bunch of tutorials on a bunch of websites but there are a few questions i have about the process that isn't answered anywhere i've looked.
Apparently downgrading requires me to get a stock ROM from LG, there is a topic here for that but it does not have the right ROM for my country, i tried a couple codes but they all got me 404.
Can I just flash any standard ROM from, US maybe, will it work?
And if yes, how do I flash it? Apparently you can do that by booting into recovery mode, but to get there you need it to be rooted which I can't do.
I've read about KDZ and downloaded that but... it crashes a lot in my PC (whenever i try the Read Device) it gives me error and closes the program (windows program not responding dialog).
I'm afraid it might crash in the middle of it if i try flashing and that would brick my device.
Is there a simple way to flash a new ROM? Is that the first thing I have to do in order to get a custom ROM say Ubuntdroid? It says I need a new recovery... but for that I need to downgrade first? It's a lot to do... and I don't really get the order in which I should do it all in...
Can somebody post me a little "do this, then do that, then finally do that" so that I can understand it all finally?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for long post, was trying to be as informative as possible.
This shows what happens when I try reading the phone on KDZ... also a little part showing that I got my device to be recognized by windows...
also disabled the LGE modem on device manager, read that if I don't it'll get bricked.
Well it won't let me link the image so... just paste the name together.

1. Find a suitable v2.2 stock ROM for flashing (link)
2. Use KDZ to flash it (I am not aware of another tool capable of doing that). Try doing that on a PC running Windows XP (important - that's where you're stuck now and I guess you're using Windows 7).
3. Root your phone - search for "z4root" on Market, install it.
4. Install Custom recovery, which will replace your current (stock) recovery mode (link - you may need to create an account on another forum in order to download).
5. Using Custom recovery you can now install any custom ROM and create nandroid backups to restore your phone to a certain (working) state.
You will have to use KDZ again if you ever want to flash a stock ROM, also losing the custom recovery. But you will have no reason to do that, except if you need to take your phone to some warranty repairs.
Good luck!
NEW PROBLEM: About step 1... i finally found a way to get my country's rom, but... it's.. the same thats on my device right now, it says V10a_02 and thats the same on my phone (the kdz read phone tells me that) so... won't I just be flashing the same 2.2.1 again?
http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/swdata/WEBSW/LGP500H/ABRABK/V10A_02/V10A_02.kdz <---- the rom the topic tells me to get.
How do I know what version of android is in that rom? and if i can't, can you link me to a rom that does?
I found one from another country that the guy said is 2.2... but... will it work if i flash that one? does it HAVE to be for my country? also my model is p500h (the h) is it different from the p500 (different as in flashing p500 without h roms on it will kill it?)
As for flashing it...
I think maybe a computer with win xp will do the trick for kdz.
i've found this post today:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944881
is it better to use that than kdz? theres no replies on topic saying "hey it worked" so i'm a little worried, but apart from a few errors it seems to work on my win 7....
i guess the reply would be "i only know kdz, do it with kdz" but i thought i might ask...
Indeed, I have not tried that method and therefore I can't recommend it. At least KDZ is successfully tested. If you are patient enough to wait for some replies either here or in that topic, you may find out if it works. I would recommend it only if you have no other choice, like if you're unable to try KDZ on an XP machine.
In the mean time, I remembered that a newer version of Custom recovery is available (v1.2) - here. But you still need to download a file and read the tutorial from that other forum I mentioned in the previous post.
what about the first part of the post? i think i might have added that after you replied i don't know... asking about the rom i found if it isn't the same i have on my phone. and asking if i can just add another country's one...

First backup your data, then download a factory ROM, it doesn't matter which version u download, what matters is the version. Make sure that it's 2.2 and not 2.2.1 or 2.2.2. Follow all the below steps without skippin any, no matter how simple or stupid they are.
Link for shipped ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865479
Now download KDZ updater and uncompress it
http://www.4shared.com/file/UleS4dP3/KDZ_FW_UPD_EN.html
Install msxml.msi from the uncompressed directory
Charge your battery to almost full state (I'm not sure, but it can be reason if phone doesn't start)
Turn phone off somehow (remove battery etc.)
Install drivers properly
Get rid of all usb drivers like Nokia, microsoft visual ++ run time environments
Install the LG drivers by selecting the update manager from the lg site
Disable LGE Virtual Modem. In your Windows operating system, go to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Modems > Right click on LGE Virtual Modem and click Disable.
Press and keep pressed "Volume up"+"Return" and connect USB cable to phone
Yellow screen with text emergency mode should appeared
Shake the handset (I know, it sounds ... strange, but it helps for ones, so... why don't try it?) UPDATE: Read some quotes on bottom.
Run KDZ_FW_UPD.exe (Has administrator).
Select Type : 3GQCT (I have one report that CDMA mod works too)
Select PhoneMode : DIAG (in case of fail try EMERGENCY, and as last chance use CS_EMERGENCY)
I Recommend do not switch phone off. There was some people, which done it and after they was not be able to turn it on again. If flashing failed, just select some another mode and try it again, again, try shake/connect disconnect, again, again....
In KDZ file : Choose the ROM file you downloaded in the first step
Press Launch software update
Shake the handset (I know, it sounds ... strange, but it helps for ones, so... why don't try it?) UPDATE: Read some quotes on bottom.
Now Root it via Z4root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
Then install custom recovery - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844483
Then download n flash any ROM of your choice, I wud sugget install Void or LOL.
Edit :- By the time I replied, many have already replied. Anyways you can check my reply too :-D
Mithun.
"it doesn't matter which version u download, what matters is the version."
does that mean it doesn't matter what country or operator the rom is for, as long as it is android version 2.2?
i have one from portugal (not my country) and that one is made for P500 mine is P500H... if that makes a difference i don't know, but i do know that rom is android 2.2. can i flash that one?
i also have one that i got from that topic following the instructions of putting my serial number, it linked me to a rom V10A_02... on KDZ when i try to read my device it says i have V10A_02 too. isn't that the same one i have now? with android 2.2.1? if it is it's very pointless to flash the same rom already in it.
any way to check?
because that is my last doubt ;p

As far as my knowledge goes, the LG P500h you have is the same phone as the P500, only branded for Telus. The hardware should be identical, therefore you may use any ROM designed for the P500 family.
The only thing you may miss if you install a ROM not customized for a Brasil (or South America) network operator is the internet acces point name, thus rendering your phone unable to acces the internet trough its data service connection, but only trough WiFi. Nevertheless, the phone's APN can be configured manually, all you need are the correct settings from your mobile operator and you're good to go.
Ok since you guys told me i can go ahead and flash any country ROM i just did and now my device burst into flames and then the flames consumed my apartment.
ok, not. it worked too well actually, i did the kdz procedure on my win 7 anyway, despite the errors when reading device info, and it took like, 1 minute, rebooted, took like 2 minutes on the android screen then it came back, with all my data still there... i thought it didn't do anything but... its now version 2.2
i tried z4root, worked ... got the superuser app and.... i'm happy ^^ thaaaanks!
anyway about the custom recovery thing..
i'm going to install the one in that post you gave me...
but i read something about the best one being clockwork something...
shouldn't i go ahead and install that one?
or can i do everything i need with this one you guys linked?

Glad that it worked Install the Amon_RA's recovery!!! Many ROM's for OO won't support clock work I suppose. Amon RA's recovery is neat, I've been using that from the time I had an HTC tattoo.

You can do anything you need with ThunderG. Now that version 1.2 supports backup and restore of ext4 partitons (a feature you don't need if you don't plan on installing a custom ROM... but you will, eventually ), it is complete.
Moreover, in ClockworkMod's first topic says: "This recovery will not allow you to flash every ZIP file". ThunderG does, if you choose to allow flashing of unsigned zip files. Sometimes this is useful.
Peeeeeerfect
Recovery installed, LOL ROM installed, all fast smooth and error-free.
no more screen touch lag, it's soooooo much faster now, overclocked, i have yet to test my emulators but i can only guess they're gonna be at least 150% better lol.
thank you all very much for taking the time to help me ^^
ONE LAST QUESTION: I PLAN ON BUYING A NEW SD CARD, JUST PLUG IT IN AND IT'LL FORMAT THEN CREATE THE NEEDED FILES THEN I INSTALL STUFF BACK ON IT, SIMPLE AS THAT?
Simple as that =D
Although there are some criteria with the sd card or you'll get unmounting problems.
Use a class 4 or higher card
format with fat32
I've never officially tried this method but its apparently supposed to help
allocation unit size: 64kb when you're formatting

I´m brazilian too, got a brand new LG Optimus One from ViVo, and a want to know if you´re having any troubles with conections, calls, internet, 3G etc.

I´m afraid that if flash any custom rom, it will break or cause any misfuncition of the 3g service.
Any idea?!

Which Mod Version

Dear People,
I am a noob. A really big noob but I really want to have all the cool things that you guys have on the HTC Legend with 16GB SD. In my opinion is the HTC Legend sometimes a bit slow.
I am running: Android 2.2 and everything is stock, I never changed a thing. I saw some cool stuff on Youtube and I read a lot of interesting information about 'Custom Roms'.
My question / problem:
I want a fast cool Legend Rom which one the GPS, WIFI and Camera all the otherthings are working with no problems. Which Custom Rom is the best ROM for me?
I hope to read answers. I am very sorry for my dumb question and my bad English.
Regards,
Eer
Dear Noobfromthelegends,
first of all, if you want to try out custom roms, you need to root your Legend.
The easiest and safest way to do so is to follow the HTC guide [1] (please note that your warranty will be affected even if it is an "official" process).
Steps to follow had been explained in many threads, please take time to read a couple of solved similar threads; it'll spare you some time.
As you must have seen, there are a lot of ROMs out there, though a lot of them shared common basis. I'm afraid I can't help you on the best and faster one, I have only tested stock ROM and CyanogenMod (CM) ones. CM 7.1 (the latest stable release AFAIK, based on Android 2.3.7) is great but my Legend is sometimes laggy (actually a bit too often compared to newer phones).
Some people are trying hard to port Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS) on our beloved Legend. One major feature of ICS is the hardware-acceleration, which means that not only the CPU is used to compute (effects and some stuff) but available DSPs too. These ROMs are currently in beta stages, but users seems to be really happy with them (major drawback is not fully working camera ATM and some minor bugs, but like I said it is beta software).
(I am of course thinking of zeubea and its CM9 adaptation [2])
PS: remember to make nandroid backups (that is, make a backup of the whole system in case you did something wrong) and keep them safe, at least one which is okay (ie. a working copy on your computer). You can go back in time with complete backups, quiet useful if you want to try some MODs.

edit: it seems that updating your hboot version (ie. following the HTC guide to root your phone by updating your hboot) may be problematic if you want S-OFF. Please look for it on the forum if you care about it.
Thank you very much for your reply.
If I want S-Off has that something to do with: 'Root your Legend'?
Thank you for your back-up tip. But how do I back up my Legend? Because I am afraid that I don't back-up correct.
Hope to hear from you or the other forum members soon.
PS: Tomorrow I am going to 'Root' my Legend and I let it you hear.

- You're welcome, that's the purpose of this forum
- it seems that S-Off give you full access to your NAND flash.
I don't know a lot of things about it, only read some posts. So far, I didn't feel the need to do it, I can use custom ROMs, custom splash screens, etc.
I repeat, I don't know **** about this. Just that I didn't need it for the past two years with my Legend (rooted for more than 18 months).
I read that it has something to do with your hboot, and as I told you to follow the HTC guide to root your legend, yes it has something to do with it because it seems that you can't S-Off easily with a hboot version > 1.00.
- you can backup your device when you are in recovery
Please read guides about rooting your Legend, you will learn about the ClockWorkMod, the recovery, fastboot and last but not least ROM Manager.
If you are not comfortable with all these terms, you may end up not understanding at all what you are doing or done and being stuck with a (semi-)bricked phone is probably not what you want. Just don't rush for it.
If you want to update your hboot to root your Legend, have a look at BlaY0's post [1] too.
Feel free to read other member's questions and problems, they certainly have been solved. Reading others' mistakes could make you avoid them.

@bibzor great stuff!
My 2c, Rom to try? OK just thinking here, maybe as a beginner to custom roms start with blay0s froyo, it will be more familiar to you coming from stock froyo, but its also got all the bells n whistles that make rooting worth it ie. ext partition support for more app space, over/under clock and more I've forgotten about just now.
Go here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866849
Or if that's too boring for you and want excitement just start with zeubeas ics , that'll get your juices flowing, just remember its still a w.i.p. so theres still a few bugs and not everything is working 100% yet, but is still good enough for me to use as a "daily".
The other option I like personally is ogo2's gingerbread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987251
Then there's the cyanogenmod & its variants like legendary legends fuse.
Their all good!
Its a good idea to try and read the whole thread of the custom rom you want to flash for hints tips and other stuff before flashing too.
Welcome to a new world of flashing

I Googled a lot of Nanobackup but I first want to root my systeem. I saw on the HTC DEV site the Unlock Bootloader but first I have to update the Rom / Ruu but there isnt a Dutch Carrier. I come from the Netherlands.
What do I have to do?

For couple of days i tryed some ROMs :
Cyanogenmod 7.1 -faster and stable, the phone was running perfectly, except the weak WIFI connection (maybe the problem was in my router) .
ExtremeLegendFuse 2 (best choice for me)- the phone just was flying - much more faster than the Stock ROM , GPS and WIFI worked perfect.
Now i use Cuanogenmod 7.2 - and will stay with it for future, Like advantages I can notice - lower baterry consumation and a little bit more free available RAM, in comparison with, CM7.1 / ExtremeLegendFuse 2 , on CM7.2 i neved used GPS and have not impression about the GPS ( befor i tryed to drive with GPS and after that i hate it ), everything else works perfct, the ROM is much more faster than the stock 2.2 Froyo ,but this ROM feels a little bit slower in comparison with ExtremeLegendFuse 2 ;
If you want a "fast and cool ROM " I recommend ExtremeLegendFuse 2;
If you use your phone for work and your phone is always in your hands - use Cuanogenmod 7.2

Thank you Bibzor but ....sorry for so much questions.
Today I wipeout everything on my phone due:
- Turn phone off, volume down 1 x On / Off Button and then Clear Storage.
- Then I did a format of my 16GB Micro SD.
So everything is clean now and I really want to do a full back up of my original Dutch ROM. If I understand it right I have to do a NANDROID for a complete back up of my orignal Dutch ROM so I can always go back to the orignal software?
BlaYo post about rooting starts with:
'' 1. Do a nandroid (at least data partition). ''
But how do I do a NANDROID with a Legend that isn't rooted? Can I start with point 2 from BlaYo post about rooting?

After unlocking boot loader, use HTC supertools (which can be downloaded in this forum or just Google it) and it should be rooted.

But..I want to back up my original Dutch 2.2 ROM. When I touch in Rom Manager:
Back up ROM, my Legend restarts and I get a phone with a red triangle.
When I push: Volume UP and then the On/Off button I get:
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command.
I tried everything: Formatting SD card and much more.
Why is a backing up of my original ROM so difficult?
P.s. I also installed: Clockwork Recovery.
Similar Problem.
Hi Folks,
The above is similar to my problem.... I am an absolute total NOOB!! Rooted my legend thanks to these forums just yesterday and have SuperUser, ROM Manager & ROM Toolbox installed and can see the root and access files so most things seem to work..... BUT.....
Every time I try to update the ROM or partition the SD card I get the dreaded red triangle/exclamation mark and have to remove the battery to allow the phone to reboot into the dreaded Vodafone ROM.
My startup shows "UNLOCKED" S-on but according to other threads here that is not a problem as unlocked automatically means S-off.
Any ideas or threads to read would be much appreciated thank you as I want to try Gingerbread before I risk ICS
Thank you
Hi guys,
if you're experiencing the red triangle horror, don't be afraid it's quite common.
This triangle shows up when you try to reboot in recovery mod but the recovery image couldn't be loaded.
The easiest way is to use ROM Manager to update your recovery to the latest available and then press "reboot in recovery".
Otherwise, you can try to flash recovery image by hand.
Download the latest recovery image [1] and follow the method listed there which is :
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-legend.img
EDIT: of course these two commands are to be executed in a shell command when your Legend is connected to your computer and the image file is in the current directory, otherwise put its path.

I LOVE YOU! I did it and I did a flash image recovery by hand. Now I am going to back up my ROM!
Rexjarvis, if you don't know what to do with the command you have to do:
when the device is switched off, hold the volume down & power button in order for the phone to boot into the bootloader & connect the phone to the pc. You see now: ''Fastboot usb''.
Download the recovery_legend_5.0.2.8.img file and put it in the same folder on your pc as fastboot.exe & adb. then open the commandline on the pc, navigate to the folder that contains the fastboot.exe. You know: CMD and then C:\Android for example. Then you have to do the two commands from Bibzor:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery_legend_5.0.2.8.img

Did you flash a ROM? In you pictures it appears that you can still get to recovery, is that true? What steps did you take for root? We need more information.

I was trying to flash rom, I was trying to make in international phone so it could work in Europe with out any Verizon build in stuff, just pure Samsung.
I can go do download mode, I was able to go for recovery before. That why there is the 4th picture, in stead of regular recovery a had that "teamwin" screen. Now when I press up menu and power is saying its going to recovery boot but then it resets it self and going back to Samsung unlock icon screen and just stays there...
You hold volume down + power to get to download mode. Then connect to a pc and download the all in one tool found in the development thread. Ignore the messages about having your phone in USB debugging and tell it to flash twrp 2.6.0.0. If it doesn't take In download mode, try rebooting your phone while it tries to flash twrp.
If that doesn't work flash stock with Odin and re-root and unlock the phone.

I'm having the exact same problems right now. I tried flashing a 4.3 i9505 rom and now I can't get back into recovery and I can't boot into the OS. I can get into download mode and use ODIN, but I don't know what to do from there. I tried using the All-In-One tool to install TWRP, but it just says Device Not Found. I also tried flashing the stock sch-i545 kernel in ODIN, and it completed successfully, rebooted, and its still doing the same thing. Is there some other way that I've missed to return to stock? I'm kinda bummin here.. but thats what comes with the territory I suppose. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Found the factory image thread. Going to follow instructions. Will report back.
it works but not completly
So guys going back to my problem I was trying to do everything like lahma69 was trying too...
in odin was error that device not found, all off that...
but what I did, I look more online and I found this one guy...
and what I did in download mode I use odin, and in PDA selection I use this file stockroms(dot)net/file/GalaxyS4/SCH-i545/VRUAMDK_NoWipe.tar.zip
now boom... its kinda works... I am back with my os, I got the android root.
but some things are not right... my phone is very hot, maybe because its charging its self for the first time in weeks.
more important is Whats is happening right now, in boot menu I get errors, no commands, it was not able to do factory reset until I went into os and did it over there... and I cant do software update from Verizon... it goes to root and its trying but then gets error and going back to os...
and I am worry about that file that I download...
so we got little progress and lahma69 I can at least operate os and I have back stock root...
but until we will not going to make it 100% hold on with what I did...
U cant flash a rom thats not made specifically for the verizon variant (i545). The i9505 is the international version of the phone. Hence your phone not booting. Youre going to have to flash the stock mdk firmware through odin and start over (reroot, etc).

sannek, I actually got it back up and running doing the same thing you did. I flashed the factory image in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259
I haven't noticed any problems yet. I'm fixing to reroot and flash my nandroid. I will let you know if I run into any problems.
I know you can't typically flash a i9505 rom on a verizon gs4, but the author of a i9505 4.3 rom gave me some instructions to try in order to get it working. I'm inserting a 4.3 ramdisk into a 4.2 AOSP ktoonsez verizon gs4 kernel, and replacing the boot.img in the 4.3 i9505 rom. I now know that I had accidentally inserted the wrong version kernel, and thats what caused my problems.

My phone seems to be at 100%. I never do software updates through Verizon so I would not know if thats working or not. After I flashed the stock image in ODIN and rerooted my device, I immediately flashed TWRP through Goomanager and reflashed my nandroid (Eclipse TW rom.) Everything is running well and my phone isn't warm. Why are you trying to do a software update? I think there is an update now that can't be rooted, so you definitely don't want to do that...

Did you see what I said about doing Samsung software updates? The rooting threads for the Verizon GS4 say that the new VRUAME7 OTA update can't be rooted. After flashing the stock image from oden, why don't you reroot your device according to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798 and then install Goomanager, click the menu key, click "Install open recovery script" and that will install TWRP recovery. From there, flash a verizon rom of your choice and all should be well, no? I only use TWRP so I can't give you any input on other recoveries. Make sure you didn't somehow get updated to VRUAME7.

Do you currently have root? To check, you can run the "SuperUser" app. If you don't have it, download it from the Play store. After installing it, run it, and a box should pop up asking you for superuser permissions. Click "Grant." If a message pops up that says something like "Superuser has been granted superuser permissions," then you have root. If you don't have root, you need to get it. Follow the instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798 . After performing those instructions, and verifying you have root, you need to download an application called "Goomanager" from the play store. After installing and opening it, click your "Menu" key (bottom left hand corner of your phone.) A menu will pop up. Click "Install open recovery script." Click Yes or Ok to all the pop up messages. After that completes, you will have TWRP recovery installed. Your recovery is what you boot your phone to in order to flash new roms, kernels, etc. In order to boot into recovery, turn off your phone completely, click and hold your volume up button, and power on your phone (while still holding volume up.) You should see some tiny blue text pop up in the top left hand corner of your screen that saying "Opening recovery" (or something to that effect.) Once you see that text, you can let go of volume up, and you will boot into TWRP. Let me know if you get this far...

And thats the most important part, because if you do you will lose root and your ability to customize your phone. In layman's terms? You will be re-VZ-navigated.
I am having a similar issue. Got the "Samsung Custom" boot screen with no boot to the OS after clean wipe and install of Hyperdrive 7. Since then I have been troubleshooting the issue and have tried many things including the "No-Wipe Factory Image". Once complete I am still getting the Samsung Custom boot screen and no loading of the OS.
Any ideas as to what I can try.
Thanks in advance,
Tony

And by the way, for the love of God, do not do any Samsung system updates.

Hi,
Your rooting method doesn't seem to work on my phone. I get no error during flash of the zip file but when I reboot, the phone isn't rooted.
FYI I'm using a fresh install of the S5690XXLL1_S5690LUXLL1 Rom.
Am I missing something here ?
Using another method found on a French forum, I can get root to work.
ClockworkMod Recovery installation worked flawlessly and that's great news :good:
Your work is much appreciated and it would be nice of you if you could give us a heads-up on what you're up to.
Thanks a bunch anyway.
Thanks
Thanks. Confirmed this is a working root and CWM recovery method.
Looking forward for custom roms, preferable CM based.
I got my phone rooted but no cvm.. they all gives me error msg..
how's this project doing? I would love to see custom roms for this device

Can I BETA test your rom
There isn't that much to test yet, struggling to get the RIL working.
Haven't found any info about marvell's RIL.
And the development has been on a break for couple months now, because I'm so busy with "real life".

good phone, low memory
Naturely real life is more important.
I have been checking your post about this regularly in the hope of unbloating my xcover because of the little memory the phone has.
I wish i could help. I know computers and some php and stuff, but phones, not a clue.
So we'll wait patiently for you to make our day :victory:

Hi manakeri,
thanks for your efforts!
I would like to help doing some low-level (RIL, camerca, GPS etc.) stuff, but I don't really know how to start. There is no build/envsetup.sh, which I could source into my shell. I am used to do Linux development on and for Debian and similar Linux distributions, so working with the Android framework is quite new to me. Could you point me to some howto or give some hints?
Regards,
Benedikt
Are you still working on it?
I would like to participate. My brother has a XCover, but he needs it for daily use, so i am not really able to flash anything right now.
Could you point out how you start everything, and which sources you use?

First you'll need the tools:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2464683
And then something like that:
repo init -u git://github.com/CyanogenMod/android.git -b ics
repo sync
git clone git://github.com/manakeri/android_device_samsung_xcover.git device/samsung/xcover
cd device/samsung/xcover/ && ./extract-files.sh && cd ../../..
cp device/samsung/xcover/armv7-a.mk build/core/combo/arch/arm/
cp device/samsung/xcover/overlay/bootable/recovery/ui.c bootable/recovery/ui.c
cp device/samsung/xcover/overlay/bootable/recovery/ui.c bootable/recovery/ui.c
cp device/samsung/xcover/overlay/development/build/sdk.atree development/build/sdk.atree
rm -rf development/samples
. build/envsetup.h
cd vendor/cm && ./get-prebuilts && cd ../..

Hi manakeri,
thanks for you instructions
Now I got some zip file:
out/target/product/xcover/cm-9-20140225-UNOFFICIAL-xcover.zip, 134M
I installed CWM, told it to install that file, cleared dalvik cache and even did a factory reset, but always got nothing more than a black screen (with backlight on) when trying to boot and couldn't use logcat as some executable within /system/bin... was missing.
If I had a development board I would simply put my computer onto the serial port and probably see what's going on, but I would like to avoid opening the phones case as I don't believe it would stay waterproof in that case. So how could I get some useful debugging info by using software?
Regards,
Benedikt
If I remember right, you need to format both data and system partition using the CWM.

unfortunately I wasn't able to get it running yet. I tried to install both cm-9-20140225-UNOFFICIAL-xcover.zip and cm_xcover-ota-eng.$USER.zip, both after doing a factory reset, but could not boot CM.
@manakeri
I installed the new CWM by using device/samsung/xcover/scripts/recovery.sh (and manually executing the last uncommented lines), pushed the cm-zip file to the sdcard and then booted to CWM and there did a factory reset and applied one of the cm-zipfiles. Is there anything I forgot?

Are those uart pins?
Hello,
I hope not to be disturbing by bumping such an old thread - also hope this is the right thread since it does not seem that the s5690 has its own subforum. What for an insignificant little device. Anyways we've been active and I am currently trying to find the UART pins of the S5690. I have taken a scan of the circuit board and cropped it a bit to show which pins I think might be UART. However, I'm quite in a bind right now: My BusPirate is not here yet. Just had to order one, and now it's going once around the world. Interestingly enough, it seems the mainboard can be run without having the other modules (like touch or camera) connected.
If anybody has experiance with UART (and has a xcover of which one does not fear to void the warranty or brick it or whatever), it would be nice if it got verified.
These four pins seem to be perfect canidates however: Next to processor, four in a group, and one seems to be GND.
Link to photo file (add together yourself, I'm not gonna spam to get rid of that damn 10 post cap. I'd also advise to visit the image hoster with an adblocker):
i7. imgchili .net/47012/47012110_s5690_uart_info.png
(I created that Image by scanning the circuit board with a common flatbed scanner in high resolution, just if you're wondering - makes it way easier to find stuff. Then found those pins, tested them for GND, cropped the original image and included the info you see in it with GIMP).
ppps: I assume it would be too much to ask somebody to write a pxa95x framebuffer driver for the last linux kernel that supported pxa95x devices...
Edit: Oh, the thread is still active. I should *really* get some sleep.
Edit2: @bwildenhain
This is taken from an Email conversation I had with manakeri:

Hey, just wanted to inform you. I just reflashed the phone to 2.3.6. Then rooted it with KERUK, from k0k0s download stuff. Anyways, after I rooted the phone, I installed CWM as you said, with your recovery image. I made factory reset, wiped cache, wiped dalvik cache, formatted /system and /data. Then installed my compiled Cyanogenmod 9.

Hehe, documentation is everything...the fat text are the steps I think where absolutely crucial to get cyanogenmod to work. Not sure though. Also @ getting infos from phone without opening it - I think that is possible if you have the right resistance cable. Like USB Jig cable with other resistor, put it onto power and it boots into UART mode, usually giving some kinda shell if I understand it correctly. However, I think you also need special hardware for that too.
However, do not take usual infos in "Fun with resistors", it does not seem to work with the s5690. Or do and tell us how it worked out. Depends on how far you want to go.
Edit 3:
I allowed myself to add some wiki pages to the github wiki.
The wiki now should contain most relevant information on getting started. Also got a bit of structure into it. However, I cannot guarantee that all of the information is correct. Be wise and use your brain.
Check it out at: https ://github. com/manakeri/android_device_samsung_xcover/wiki
Installing CM
Yesterday I installed CWM and rooted my Xcover. Last night I compiled the Xcover branch of CM9 made by manakeri using Builduntu made by sylentprofet.
I just managed to successfully install CyanogenMod by installing cm_xcover-ota-eng.android.zip (aka cm_xcover-ota-eng.$USER.zip). Before installing I performed a factory reset, wiped cache, formatted /system and formatted /data.
It boots fine, and I will experiment with the coming days! Hopefully development will restart soon!

Samsung Galaxy S3 can't flash recovery

Have a Verizon SCH-I535 running android 4.4.2 I have been trying in vain for two days now to root this phone and replace the stock recovery. I'm aiming for running clockworkmod recovery and cyanogenmod. I've followed their instructions using terminal and heimdall which DOES WORK and communicate with device.
Problem is EVERY TIME I boot to recovery and try to run anything...a stock zip to downgrade it says "failed to verify whole-file signature" and "signature verification failed."
The only thing I can do is run towelroot.apk, install superSU.apk, and use the stock ROM. Using ODIN is a waste of time and fails every file every time. At this point I'm honestly kinda amazed I don't have a brick I've done so many transfers! I also always wipe data/cache before I install zips off SDcard.
I'm out of answers. Oh! At one point my counter was too high and it was also saying, "System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help. " I downloaded TriangleAway and it reset the counter back to zero and the error went away, but there for a while I couldn't even get to recovery (take battery out and cancel out of download mode FYI to boot back into device).
Samsung Kies is the closest glimmer of hope I've gotten. Twice now it has returned my phone back to stock; so I don't think its a hardware issue ie. bad ram or ROM memory...
I've rooted a couple older Galaxy S3's running 4.3 with no issue. It's been a couple years but that was a simple ODIN flash and I kept standard ROM/recovery as I was flashing carriers and didn't want to risk breaking anything.
I'd like to think I'm not an idiot, but what the hell am I missing. I've watched dozens of youtube videos and read hundreds of guides that all seem to work. It's something with this phone and kies or some type of heightened security...
Thanks in advance! You can also email me at [email protected]
Anyone? Even a, "Yeah, that's weird man! Sounds like you did everything right!" Would make me feel better...
Yes I've tried it and it worked make sure u have the unofficial safestrap the one for your phone and do the busy box and terminal emulator thing and it works if you try to install safestrap without the other things you will brick I did it twice but it very easy to unbrick so download busybox terminal emulator and the correct safestrap for you device and also I'm on 4.4.2 also and there is only one rom i have found that works and its called superliter there ya go hope I help would provide download links but I'm not home
Also I forgot to mention your bootloader won't be unlocked it'll be bypassed and you will have a custom recovery

device specific safestrap recovery and image
4.4.2 has a 'locked bootloader' courtesy of Verizon! This is what has been giving me fits... Going to try to go back to totally stock 4.4.2 (right not my bootloader is the international version and locked out), then towelroot to root, then install root explorer/supersu, then I'll try safestrap and hopefully its the miracle cure!

Verizon spends a pretty penny when it comes to making sure their devices................. stay theirs i guess you can say when it comes to the boot-loader! To my knowledge their isn't a way of getting around that with a permanent recovery flash that completely replaces Verizon's stock recovery. I can almost guaranteeing you that your problem is Verizon locked boot loader. Stock recoveries are solely only their for their technicians, so unless someone somehow has leaked a program that they use to get around that stuff without screwing it up, we the general public will never be able to flash anything permanent with any phones stock recovery unless we have their "secret" software! Every once in a while you do find a leaked one. I got lucky and found one for the T-mobile galaxy S6 Edge. As far as Odin I've noticed that the new versions seem to be very particular. Meaning if a dot or a space is misplaced anywhere in the zip or what not it will always fail. With my t-mobile S6 I spent two days figuring out I had to take a letter out of the name of the file i was trying to Odin. One letter that was it and once I did that it went flawlessly. Otherwise man i really don't know what to tell you, seems like ya followed the lines as described. Just remember its a Samsung Galaxy in my opinion Galaxies are unbrickable. Ive even pulled the cord in the middle of a Odin flash to see if i could brick it for good and was still able to go right into download mode and flash stock back onto it and everything working. So don't be afraid of bricking it. It will be way easier (sorry to say) for you to re-flash stock right now! Good luck bro wish you the best!

Are you able to disable Signature verification in the recovery?
Are you able to disable Signature verification in the recovery?
You can once I flash to say clockworkmod recovery. Stock I don't know of a way to...hence the Catch 22 there's no going forward and no going back...you're stuck with stock ROM/recovery but at least its rooted.
Well ****. Take my word for it you CAN brick a galaxy s3.
I used KIES to restore back to factory stock recovery etc etc.
I then used towelroot to root phone and install supersu. I then installed safestrap which totally worked! I was able to bypass the stock recovery and everything was running smoothly...I got overzealous and tried to install the cyanogenmod vrale6 bootloader zip through safestrap. I currently have a brick. It won't boot, no led's, no screen, no vibrate. I have another galaxy s3 charging batteries and swapped it out...removed sim and micro sd. I should have just installed the cyanogenmod app and done it that way...
So close and now I bricked it...
OK got my brick back by writing image to microSD card...pretty happy about that little trick. And that's utter nonsense about needing the same size card as your internal memory! I used a 32gig card on a 16gig phone...
Still trying but this locked 4.4.2 bootloader is BULL****. Going to try to downgrade but I'm not sure I'm going to end up with anything but a rooted stock rom...
So does anyone know of a way to downgrade or change recovery on Verizon 4.4.2?
I have s3 Verizon I-535 & clockworkmod recovery is not gonna work cuz of the locked bootloader, I used safestrap that's the only recovery for 4.4.2

Go to mount on safestrap & see if your system partition is checked(mounted) e.t.c & go to playstore install universal init.d app
Note; uncheck verify signature checks if you're trying flash anything via recovery or else it will definitely fail

system partition is NOT checked within safestrap. Installed universal init.d but I'm out of my league on it... Init.d says stock kernel does not have support...
