I was rocking the latest perfect storm rom saw that a new lighting rom released. Downloaded, wipe data cache flashed. Loaded up fine except no data, tried toggling airplane mode...nada. booted in recovery wiped davlik and battery stats, restored ...same thing. Restored back to perfect storm...no data. Any advice to why this happened. Phone was perfect before I crakflashed

Bump this I am having the same exact issue today on my HeroC going between ROMs. Did you get this fixed? None of my nandroids even have data =(
Nothing worked, pretty sure one of the beta kernals broke the radio between flashes. Final result had my phone replaced

Dude, people on this site are not going to release kernels that will f up your phone. Next time you should probably do a little more research before you trade in your phone for a new one.
Patience is a virtue for most, but when its your primary line and data is f'd up I'm not going to wait. Research at the time was non existent for this matter. I had a new phone in 10hrs when I requested replacement. A dev suggested reflashing the stock radio and re rooting the device to restore data, this didn't take. Its flasher beware, something everybody knows. Devs even post this in the beginning of all threads. Everybody's phone reacts differently to each rom, kernal, radio, theme what have you. I'm just now sitting back and waiting for UD to be released

UD... LMAO
Just a quick comment, FWIW...
There was a time, when I was more of a noob than I am now, that I used to smirk at people who said they always wiped cache and data 2 or 3 times between loading different ROMs. I thought they were being a little anal - after all, a wipe's a wipe.
I've since learned differently. Recently I had a nasty FC problem that just wouldn't go away until I wiped data three times and then reflashed my ROM. Don't know why, but it works sometimes when nothing else will.
I thought it was anal too haha
I wipe 2 times before a flash.
Its weird how things work

Cvpcs wrote a great blog on wiping. I too have had nasty fc issues w/ our current recovery. You would think if it's not wiping correctly then 50 wipes would still produce the same bad wipe. I mean, the code doesn't change w/ each wipe we perform
Never had an issue with other recoveries on older phones. Properly written cwmr shouldn't need to wipe more than once b/c the code will only do what it's written to do. Improper coding leads to improper wiping. Just my $.02

Right, but if one wipe fails to wipe correctly do you suppose the second will clean up what it missed? I don't think code has become self aware of mistakes.

And have never had 99% of the.problems I see others having after flashes such as FCs and all...unless it was a known bug everyone was experience.

Here is more irritation : I ran 234update.zip from stock 233 recovery FOUR TIMES w/o leaving recovery. 1st: got a status (0) and stopped. 2nd correct status err and went faster. 3rd went fastest. 4th no more speedup.

Glad I'm not the only one laughing at this entire thread of puns of whiping, being anal about doing it over and over and wiping again!
You guys are right though, everytime a wipe is done, seems the later ones are much faster.
Apparently the more you wipe, the cleaner you get, it get's easier it is to wipe again.

Yeah, that was my point. It's definetly a progressive action. Very strange. I wudda thought like XOdus, that the code would do exactly the same thing each time.
The puns are fun.
They get faster b/c there's nothing else to wipe from the directory. My final post here.

Of course. But all punning aside, the point he was making is that they get progressively faster, indicating that not all is cleared with earlier wipes. There's no denying that multiple wipes can clear up sticky problems. Even if the reason is "bad code", that's still strange.

I hear ya. The blog article makes perfect sense. Hard to argue with the logic expressed there. And yet... experience tells me otherwise. As I said in the OP, I resenctly had a persistent FC problem with a system file - may have been ProgramMenuSystem.apk, can't remember for sure. Re-loaded my nandroid (that was fine before). While anyone would fully expect that to reslove the problem, the problem continued. Wiped again and re-flashed same version of my ROM. Problem still there. Wiped three times and re-flashed ROM again. Problem gone and never re-appeared.
I cannot explain why wiping data three times eliminated the problem that persisted even after wiping and re-flashing. Yet it did. Go figure.

I just flashed over to Energyrom for HTC Evo 4g. I love the look but man this thing sure is giving me a headache with all the FC's and how sluggish it is. And what I mean by "all" the fc's is that everything there is known to man on this phone, has been having some sort of fc but nothing closes. It just pops up and does nothing when I click fc. Not sure what is up with it or if I did something wrong for that matter, but I would like to know if there is anything I can do to fix it. I am on Gingerbread if that helps out at all. I'm a noob but I understand computers and technology. Please help. \m/

I went from the 9/8 build to the 9/10 build, and the Recent Apps hardware key does absolutely nothing, no matter what function i assign it in system settings (very annoying not having a Menu button!). Tried flashing multiple times, re-downloading multiple times, flash boot.img, fix permissions, wipe cache/dalvik, etc. Nothing fixes it. Flashed back to the 9/8 build and everything works like a charm. Anyone else having this issue?

Came here to investigate the same thing, except I went from 9/7 to 9/10, looks like we're having the same problem tho. Initially neither the app-switch button or long pressing home worked. Ran fix permissions from twrp and got the long press home working again. You think reverting to an earlier build would fix it?

This is still useful for others that have dirty flashed and will experience issues.
But now you know to do a clean wipe if you run into issues after dirty flashing :highfive:
Not a problem I actually dirty flashed up. Always do then if I have a issue. I clean install to make sure it's not my end. Usually fixes things.

Alright, so I rebooted into TWRP 2.2.2.0 and did wipe cache, wipe dalvik, factory reset, and wipe system, in that order. I then flashed from my SD card CM10 nightly 9/10 and gapps jb. Cleared cache/dalvik. Booted up, ran fix permissions. Still no luck; recent apps hard key still doesn't do anything (yes, I went in to system settings and set the key functions,) but it does vibrate when touched. Did I miss a step somewhere?

I suppose you could try a wipe script as they are written to erase all possible data that could cause unintended side effects with a new flash

I'm a bit curious as to why I have read more times than I can count, someone stating they did a factory reset/wipe data "multiple times in a row" or "wiped two times, then wiped cache, then wiped data again, then davlik, then... omg I just went cross-eyed".
I seriously have to be missing something. There has to be some hidden easter egg that after the 2nd or 3rd or 4th time you wipe data or cache or some other combo that will trick the phone into really wiping it that particular time. Right? Just has to be!
Spill the goods yo!
As far as I can tell, its to make sure no files are left behind during the first factory reset/wipe. I personally have experienced this on my Droid X, I wiped in CWM then flashed a rom and couldn't get out of a boot loop, but i was able to wipe and flash again and everything worked.
To cut down on skid marks...duh
Its just so remnants of the previous rom do not interfere with the new rom

To make sure no files are left??? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a 'wipe'? I'm being sarcastic obviously when I posted this but if this is a serious answer then I have to second guess the whole idea what is supposed to work, really doesn't.
I'm not being totally ignorant to weird occurances, however... I doubt it happens as frequent as it looks like it is. I see it all over the forums and if its that bad... I'd assume the devs who support the app and or recovery will get it working as close to 100% And my belief is that it is. I just think people have this OCD about doing things multiple times only because some other schmuck did it and now it becomes viral. A factory reset/wipe data is what it is... Stamping it four times shouldn't make any difference. Just my OCD kicking in... Lol

It's definitely pointless. The wipe wipes it all first time. I'd be more inclined to think if there is general wackiness after installing a new rom it was a bad install rather than leftover files from a wipe.
When you wipe it's not like it deletes anything. It overwrites it with 1's and 0's to the sectors.. look up file recovery and learn binary. Thats why people use programs like dban. You're not fully deleting something with a sime wipe it's just being overwritten with blank sectors essentially. More you wipe more thorough the actual deletion it is.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
I think it is more of a carry over from older versions of recoveries. Cwm used to have locations to wipe all over the place and if you are going into multiple menus doing various wipes it becomes - "did I wipe dalvik? Oh well do it again, what could it hurt".
Actually it just wears out your flash memory quicker.

This...but it's a superstition somewhat rooted in reality. A few years ago there were a few recoveries for a few devices that had a bug that resulted in them appearing to perform a wipe but not actually doing a wipe in some circumstances. It's been fixed a long time but the "wipe 3 times" mentality has stuck for a lot of people.
Never even heard of this until reading this thread. Definitely seems like an OCD thing, wiping more than once. Nothing wrong with people who like to do it but it does seem like a waste of time to me. Kind of like the calibrate battery myth, people were saying clear the battery file then charge the phone all the way up and let it die and all this nonsense. Google Engineer said it is a waste of time and doesn't calibrate the battery.

over writing is actually deleting it. overwriting multiple times does a better job. the wiping doesn't necessarily delete, it just makes the block available to be written over. if wiping were overwriting then the wipe would take a bit longer than it does - possibly doubling the the rom install.
