Well it depends in what rom you are going to flash some rom supports amonra and some cwm. Both are good.

both have their cons and pro but if u want to be with the updated recovery I would say clockwork but make sure the rom which u are flashing supports clockwork orelse u can easily try both by flashable zip here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065197 even clockowrk support flashing from rom manager and is much more advanced

First thing u do is take a backup.
Than wipe all for first time flashing.
Wipe dalvic cache and wipe cached when u switch between same rom. (Like upgrade).

Thanks for that link. I was able to use it to easily switch between AmonRa and ClockworkMod. It didn't work going from AmonRa 2.2.1 -> ClockworkMod 3.1.0.0, but I was able to go to 3.0.2.4, and back and forth from there. It is a lot easier to try different recoveries this way!

For this you will have to switch to amonra again. And you can restore your back up.
Other way is to first switch to cwm on your desired rom. Then take a nandroid backup via cwm. Then for restoring you will not have to go to amonra.

Does anyone know what the difference between CWM 3.0.2.4 and 3.1.0.0 is? I made a bunch of backups on 3.1.0.0, but it is easier to switch between 3.0.2.4 and AmonRa then it is to do the same for 3.1.0.0, so I was thinking of using those 2 (when I need to use 1 vs the other), but I wanted to be sure my backup will still work with the older CWM

So you are saying, when we plan to switch frm amonra to cwn, first we have to flash cwm3.0.2.4 then flash cwm3.1.0.0 to work smoothly.

To be more specific, I'm saying that with the zips provided in the link, I got an error when trying to flash CWM 3.1.0.0 when running AmonRa 2.2.1. I was able to successfully reflash the 3.1.0.0 zip from a running CWM env, and was able to flash the 3.0.2.4 zip from AmonRa. So at least on my P509, I can't go directly from AmonRa->CWM 3.1.0.0 (vice versa works fine).
But yes, you can do:
AmonRa 2.2.1->CWM 3.0.2.4->CWM 3.1.0.0 using the zips provided
There is probably little reason for most to use both; play with them and choose one. For some of the stuff I'm working on, there are features of each I need though, so I've been going back and forth.
I flashed cwm 3.1 over amonra 2.2.1 without any problem.

Hi, I'm really new to this Android thing and a friend bought a Samsung Galaxy Ace. He's worst than me and doesn't know what a ROM is..
Well, I want to install THIS CyanogenMod but it says the phone needs to be in 2.3.* and my friend's is in 2.2.1.
I searched how to update to 2.3.* and I thought updating to 2.3.3 by flashing THIS VillainROM will work.. and after this ROM, put ClockWorkMod (required by the CM) and flash the CM..
I want to know if this will work or if I'll brick my friend's phone (I prefer bricking my phone rather than my friend's). Hope to hear some reponse soon, thanks!
VillanROM is fine

I'm Not familuar with your Galaxy phone but as it is samsung you should be able to you odin or swupdate to flash any SUPPORTED rom. Also first thing I have done with any phone regardless of manufacture is obtain root then flash recover and lastly flash the rom of your choice.
Not much help but hope it gives some direction
MOST IMPORTANT read extensivly about anything you are considering flashing BEFORE you do it. $500 dollar paper weights are over rated
Well, thanks for help but I have another problem
I connected the phone to Skies and it said a Firmware update was available. I updated the phone and ended with 2.3.4.
I was very happy and thought: "Great! I have 2.3.4 so now I can put the CWM and install the CyanogenMod "
I copied the CWM to the SD and installed it through recovery. When I tried to enter the CWM App it said I needed Superuser acess and the app closes..
I tried using SuperOneClick v2.1.1 and also opening in recovery mode and selecting "install .zip from SD" with a .zip supposed to root 2.3.4 but none of them worked..
What should I do? HELP!

You don't need root. Flash the clockworkmod recovery and you're all set for the final rom flashing.

Recovery mode
"Install zip from SD card" NOT "Install update from SD card"
Select your CyanogenMod zip file
Wait for it to finish
Reboot device

Hello and sorry to post this problem here as i have the tmobile note but i used the att i717 rooting method from rootgalaxynote.com ofcourse did not use an att based rom but a tmobile one( cm10.1 rc2) . The problem is after clearing everything i then proceed to install the new rom using cwm and it says "install aborted" error section 7 ive tried it a few times cleared everything again and still nothing. Dont know if i need to update cwm and if so how vers.5.0.5 or something like that or is it the build which is the lates update by tmo uvlma1 and the instructions were from may of 2012. Please help i have gone back to stock for now as i did backup first. Ps i have installed titanium backup pro and and superuser and have even frozen some of the bloatware from tmo so im guessing i am rooted. Please help as the tmo threads are dead and no help from no one!! Thanks a bunch guys
Just update your recovery dude.
Twrp is superior to cwm imo anyway.
This has been discussed many times. Since you are coming from T-Mobile forum here is a link which was recently discussed. Staus 7 means you need to upgrade your recovery.

Your phone will stay in download mode to flash a recovery.
Once flashed boot into that every and flash a Rom within.
Put your phone to download mode. Make sure you have drivers installed. Open odin(i used v1.85). Put the twrp recovery tar file in to pda slot. Conect your phone to your computer in download mode. Once odin finds your device then press start.

Today I did a build.prop tweak. I changed the dalvik vm heapsize to 48m.When I rebooted it didnt boot up. just stuck up on the samsung logo. I went to CWM recovery (version 5). Wipe data(Factory Reset). Then tried to restore my backup. It stopped in the "Restoring Data" and showed a error. And it didnt recover Data. I rebooted it didnt. I got a bootloop. I tried recovering again. It showed the same error.!
It is still stuck in the bootloop!

Okay. here is what I did with my device fully:
• Changed dalvik vm heap size to 48M.
•After Rebooting the device just stuck to the Samsung image screen ( not a bootloop now ) . Tried many times but still was the same.
• So I thought I will recover and went to CWM. First Wiped data. Then selected Recover. But during recovering Data partition it encountered a error and couldn't restore data.
• After that there was the bootloop.
• Then as you said I went to the guide, downloaded the stock firmware (INS only my phone also) and Odin.
• Selected the PDA and chose the firmware. Clicked start.
•It was there in the "SetupConnection" for a few minutes and then it failed showing "All Threads Completed. 0 Success 1 Failed".
• It was still in Download mode.
•When I removed the USB. The Firmware upgrade error screen came.
I wasn't able to reboot nor go to recovery. It is going only to the download mode!
Please help me dude.!
It is my mother's phone and she wants it back.!

Hey dude,
Cool your mind.
Just tell which recovery was installed in your mobile. Cwm 5/ cwm6.
If u hv cwm 6 installed then just follow this guide u will be out of bootloop :
Got Bootloop & not able to boot in recovery through key combination as well as through adb command "adb reboot recovery" or flashing other stock firmwares through odin...
Follow Below process for booting in stock recovery...
From @Chirtagh 's deodexd custom rom u have to flash only first file (PARTOFCUSTOMROM-firmware) through ODIN..... thereafter flashing it ll show you android logo updating firmware...Click volume up key 2-3 times and it ll boot in recovery......
Once u get recovery menu clear data n reboot...done enjoy
Download file from below link & extract it on ur desktop
http://www.mediafire.com/download/6o45uk1ouyu76d5/Flash+this+first!!!!!!!!.zip
After than just wipe data.
If u have cwm5 installed. Than first flash cwm 6 via odin in your mobile. After than folllw the above procedure.
If u dont know what you are doing than u should not do that
