In order to get the (whenever it arrives) OTA - I wanted to take CWM recovery off. What is the stock recovery called? Bootstrap? Safestrap?
Or should I just restore back to 6.12.181? Will that take care of everything?
If I do restore back, that's a fresh install - reinstall all my apps?
Scott
You need to fastboot back to stock. Stock recovery is already built into the RAZR. Bootstrap and Safestrap are custom recoveries used for the purposes of flashing custom ROMs.
There are a couple of options to get back to stock: RSD Lite or the Droid RAZR Utility.
Easiest might be the Droid RAZR Utility. Just remember, either option WILL wipe your internal SD card unless you edit the XML file and remove the following line:
Code:
<step operation="erase" partition="emstorage" />
You can get the Droid RAZR Utility at the following:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...1-6-now-contains-6-12-181-fastboot-files.html
This will put you back onto the latest 2.3.6 stock GB for RAZR which means no recovery, no root - you're back to stock and will have to reroot and reinstall recovery if you wish to flash custom ROMs and such.
So if I am reading/understanding this correctly - I am going to "lose" my user data at least temporarily, but if I simply back up my apps, remove the line in question and go back to 181, using the tool - then I can quickly re-root and restore the apps. The only disadvantage is I can't flash roms or backup my existing rom?

As well as whatever is on the internal SSD card in your phone. So, if you have pictures or music or extra downloaded content for games on the internal SSD card, you WILL lose them UNLESS you remove the line I specified from the .XML file. If you back up your app data with a program, such as Titanium Backup, it will save that information but you would still lose any and ALL files on the internal SSD card. So, when you backup your app data, be sure it's being saved to your EXTERNAL ssd card or you will lost that as well when you fastboot back to stock.
My suggestion is to use the Droid RAZR Utility that I linked to. After you unzip it's contents to your hard drive, you can go into the DroidRAZRUtility1.6\files directory and edit the VRZ_XT912_6.5.1-167_DHD-14_M3-8_CFC_1FF_01.xml file and remove the following line to PREVENT the fastboot files from overwriting/erasing your internal SSD card:
Code:
<step operation="erase" partition="emstorage" />
You'll still lose your app data, but you can restore that from your backup you made with Titanium Backup or whatever app you chose to use to backup your user data.
After that, save the file, exit and run the DroidRAZRUtility.bat file. You'll have to boot your phone into AP Fastboot mode:
Power down your droid
press and hold the volume up and down keys together and then press and hold power button until you see the menu.
Use volume down to select the AP Fastboot menu item
Press the volume up key to go into AP Fastboot mode
Hook up your droid to your PC
Select option 1 from the DroidRAZR Utility menu and follow the directions
It takes about 10 to 20 minutes, but you will get back to stock GB with no root or custom recovery apps.
Thanks. I appreciate you helping out here. I got quite good on my droid incredible, never using a rom for more than a week, but the locked bootloader seems to make things a little trickier over here. Everything you said makes crystal clear sense.

Glad to be of help. I just got my RAZR about a week ago, coming from an X2, and things are different on how you do things with the RAZR. I don't know everything there is to know about the RAZR yet, but at least I know how to get back to stock, root, install a recovery and flash a custom ROM. It was the first thing I made sure I understood how to do before I did any type of rooting or flashing.
This is all useful information, but do we actually have to get rid of CWM to get ICS OTA? I'm pretty sure I had CWM on my phone when the OTA from 173 to 181 came out, and that didn't cause any problems. I realize that ICS is a much more extensive update, but will the OTA care? If I need to go through all that hassle then I'll do it to get OTA, but I'd rather not.

Hello everyone,
I'm new to the Eris. I've had it for a few months, but this is the first "in-depth" thing I've done with it.
I've decided to take the plunge and root the phone. I'm going to use the on-screen method.
My question is this: What do I need to do to prepare? I've got all my apps backed up to the SD card, and the phone is charging right now.
Any suggestions as to what ROM to use? Or what I need to get the Froyo update, etc?
I'm new, so I'm browsing and learning, but any information you guys have would be great. Thanks in advance.
If you want a Froyo rom, that is what you'll need to download. There are about a half dozen in the development section and all mention "Froyo" in the title. Read the entire thread and it's not a bad idea to read some comments. If the developer says you need the google apps aka gapps zip, get it too. Put both files (or only one if gapps isn't needed) on the root (not in any folders) of your sd. Once you're rooted you should enter recovery by powering off, then boot holding power and vol up (rooting instructions may take you there anyway). Youll see options to reboot, ms toggle, backup/restore, etc. Go to back up/restore and create a nandroid by following the prompts. Press vol down until you return to the home screen, then go to wipe. Wipe data/factory reset and wipe dalvik cache. Vol down back to the main screen and flash the new rom and gapps (if needed). ENJOY. Note: Read all instructions thoroughly before rooting. If any instructions i've listed are different then those listed in the official instructions, follow them first. Once you're rooted and begin changing roms frequently you need to always make a nandroid of the current rom your own (in case you dont like the new one or have problems flashing it), wipe data and dalvik (ext partition too if your sd card is partitioned and you're using a rom which allows apps2sd via a partitioned sd card - froyo currently does not), and backup your apps/settings via the app of your choice before flashing. If your upgrading your current rom you usually wont have to do a wipe (the developer will indicate it in the instructions).
It's a good idea to back up your apps before flashing new roms. Titanium is my favorite app but its for root only. Search the market. You can probably find an app to use before you root.

Wow, thanks for getting back to me with such detail. Very, very much appreciated. It turns out however, that I won't be able to do this.
I checked out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742228
I found that I had release keys under my build number, which indicates is the 2.1 leak - which really sucks, because I got the update OTA... why would they send out a leaked platform? That sucks
Ah well, thanks very much for your help. I'm going to take a look at my brothers phone, and see if we can root that. Thanks
You CAN root ANY eris now. Do a little more research.

Hey everyone!
Just got my phone back from repairs since I received the white light of death. I noticed a lot of people here looking for a Rogers Nandroid so I decided to upload mine.
Features:
Stock Rogers Rom Version: 2.3.5
Rooted using SuperOneClick (Zergrush)
CWM on Boot
Updated SU Binaries
*EDIT
New Instructions for Restoring
After you download and extract the folder, change the folder name from Rogers Stock to any other name without a space! - This will ensure you donot get the MD5 Mismatch error when restoring the backup!
[*]The renamed folder needs to placed in "/sdcard-ext/clockworkmod/backup/<here> ". sdcard-ext is referring to your external sd card. If you don't have one then your clockwork recovery folder should be in your internal sd card so it should be placed there instead.
After restoring, Please do a data+cache+dalvik wipe or a factory wipe from settings in order to wipe any of the settings left from my backup.
Link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3350670/Rogers%20Stock.7z
Tips:
If your phone is stuck in AP/Fastboot mode and you want to restore to Rogers ROM
Download RSDLite and either the Retail.BR/Vivo LATAM fastboot files from the development section.
Restore your phone to working state by using RSDLite.
Root and install CWM on boot.
Finally, boot into CWM and restore Nandroid in order to return to Rogers Stock.
If you have ever used a RetailBR/Vivo fastboot on your RAZR, you will be able to restore this backup but you won't be able to receive the 2.3.6 Rogers OTA. In that situation, you're better off using the 2.3.6 RetailBR fastboot from the developers section and restore that using RSDLite. Do not restore this backup over the 2.3.6 fastboot as this backup is 2.3.5!
Link to 2.3.6 RetailBR fastboot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1624352 (All credits of the upload go to pedrotorresfilho)
Thank you, this is very useful

Yes. It should work fine for any Rogers Razr. You should be able to boot into CWM and restore. Make sure you don't have any SU backups using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper as I believe it does break the Nandroid Restore.
Will this fix my contacts force close problem from removing yahoo? It would be great if it does!
Thanks heaps!
Did you just freeze or did you uninstall a system app? If its just a freeze, then you'll have to unfreeze the app in order to fix the force close. If its an uninstall then yes this should restore all the apk's back to your phone as they come out of the box.
THANK YOU DUDE!
its not a fastboot, but it should works the same, right? i have safestrap installed might try this out...

Np, and yes it should work. In the odd case it goes wrong, you'll have to use the RetailBr/Vivo fastboot and restore using RSDLite since those are the only two that can be flashed onto the Rogers xt910.
Quick question....
Whst do you use to flash this? Bootstrap? Which version?
Coz i just realzed gsm phones doesn't work with safestrap...
Yep bootstrap is the way to go. You should install bootstrap and then cwm on boot. Make sure you copy my backup to the clockwork recovery folder on your external sdcard, go to backup/restore and then select it and let it restore. If you want your user data to stay, i believe you can go into advanced and do a /system restore only.
Also make a backup of your current one before you try this incase you encounter any errors and cant restore my nandroid.

PS: 3am reply? From Toronto? Nice
You can use internal sdcard as well however its not really suggested. I believe under mounts and storage you can go and mount the other card.
Thanks for the Rogers' backup, dude! I wish they would release ICS or 2.3.6 at least

tried doin this but gives me MD5 mismatch
Sorry I forgot to check up on the thread. You can bypass the MD5 mismatch by renaming the folder and removing the space in the folder name and it should flash perfectly.
Thank you for putting this up I just have a question if there is anyway that I can use this to restore a bricked phone. I can't go beyond AP fastboot
No you cannot use this as a fastboot however you can use the Retail.BR fastboot flash that to get phone working. Then root/install CWM and restore this nandroid in order to get back to stock Rogers state.
hey Evon, another quick question:
dont u need to unroot to get official Rogers OTA with your Nandroid?
I'm not sure about OTA's. I believe you can still be rooted and receive OTA's however you must be on the stock Rogers Rom in order to receive the Rogers OTA. I could be wrong since there has not been any OTA so far from Rogers so we'll have to wait and see.
With Safestrap I know it uses a different folder to install the 2nd OS. Is there any issues with space on the phone doing this? Should we factory reset the good OS before installing the 2nd one? And this also utilizes both cores on the processor correct? Seems like I remember reading somewhere we were only able to use one core because of the locked bootloader. If I do safestrap, is backing up the folder that gets modified enough or do I need to be prepared to RSD if there is a problem since I'm on .211?
Are there any guides that explain Safestrap vs Bootstrap? I've found a couple of smaller posts about this, but nothing going real in depth.
Thanks!
Yes, sometimes there are some issues with space when doing this. No, do not factory reset the first system before installing the second one. The phone would still use both processors, that's only with Kexec only one core is in use. This is a pretty good thread on bootstrap versus safestrap http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/2678-bootstrap-vs-safestrap/
Could you please clarify on "If I do safestrap, is backing up the folder that gets modified enough or do I need to be prepared to RSD if there is a problem since I'm on .211?" generally when you use safestrap, you don't need to use RSD all that much , you have nandroids and 2 systems that it's possible to boot into.

I guess my concern with backing things up was returning to stock if I ever needed to. I don't think I really need to worry about an update or coming out as .211 isn't even officially available to everyone. If an update does come out with updated radios would it even install with the modifications safestrap will make?

Mostly, on safestrap there is no problem going back to stock, as with 2 button presses we can go back to the unsafe system(stock).
No it would not install, but you can bypass this. Since Safestrap uses /preinstall to store backups and the safe/unsafe system, it's modified while safestrap is in use and all you have to do before you install safestrap is copy and paste the /preinstall folder onto your sdcard. Then when there is an OTA, uninstall safestrap and put your original /preinstall back in.

Thanks! Thats kind of what I needed. I figured once I start this going back to stock really won't be an option for me as the benefit of running a custom rom is more appealing. I just wanted to make sure I restore the phone back if I ever need to send it in or decide to trade/replace for a Razr Maxx someday.
Hi there,
Joined these forums to see if any fellow Safestrap users could help... I installed a custom rom (HyperDrive) onto the stock rom boot option in Safestrap, despite the big red text saying NOT TO INSTALL A CUSTOM ROM ON STOCK ROM.
My problem is: I have 3 different partitions on my phone, each with a different version of hyperdrive. The phone's original capacity is 16gb, but now it has the three different partitions within that 16 gb. I want to unroot and get rid of all these partitions. Anyone know how to help?
How did you create the partitions in the first place? Safestrap makes no sense to me.

When you recover into SafeStrap, there are 8 menus. One of the menus is boot options. You click on boot options and you're given 4 partition portions (depending on the internal storage size of your device). 3 of the choices are custom rom slots, one of the choices is stock rom. If you wipe your stock rom, you're out of luck. You can have a whole bunch of other roms preloaded, but if you remove your stock rom and have no backups, you're finished...
So, the question is, how can I get all 16 gb back and restore my phone completely?
Thanks dude

I believe it operates the same way on the S4 as it did on my Razr. There should be a directory on your internal storage (sdcard0) named SafeStrap; that is where your images are stored for any custom ROM -- each one should be in a directory of it's own (Slot1, Slot2, etc), with each of those directories containing it's own system.img, cache.img and userdata.img files.
I don't believe that Safestrap will let you wipe the stock ROM slot -- hashcode has built a lot of safety features into it!
In order to uninstall Safestrap, even though you uninstall it in your Applications, you may have to use adb. If you aren't interesting in keeping the custom ROMS you have in those slots, you can simply uninstall Safestrap and then delete that Safestrap directory on your internal storage. After that, if you reboot and it still goes into Safestrap recovery before booting the stock image, you'll have to uninstall Safestrap with adb. If you need to use adb to get rid of it, go to HashCode's page -- blog.hash-of-codes.com/2012/12/27/how-to-manually-remove-safestrap-via-adb/ -- where he has full instructions -- it is only about 8 command lines and only takes a couple of minutes.
Sorry I had to post the link like that, but this STUPID board thinks I'm too "new" to post a frigging link to one of it's own developers!

Just getting to this now... school's been busy.
Will post results by the end of the weekend!
You can wipe the primary slot.
I'm running GPE on that slot now.
You can make a backup of your Safestrap compatible rom and I suggest one of your primary slot, and restore the backup to the primary, then delete all the slots.
Test your backups! And remember if you wipe your primary slot Safestrap is gone! You must reinstall it to get the recovery menu again.

Still Not Working
I tried using ADB to remove Safestrap and it didn't work.
I downloaded root browser and noticed that, for some reason, I have 5 gb of storage taken up by something unknown.
My next question is: Where are the files on my internal storage for Safestrap? Can I delete those?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been trying to figure this out for weeks... I just want my normal phone back!
I have a Verizon droid RAZR that the screen has cracked in many places. I have bought a new phone and have no plans for ever using this as a phone. What I would like to do is install a ROM over the stock one, not dual boot both. I was also wanting to get rid of all of the phone stuff, no Verizon apps, no SMS, and no phone logs. I would use this like a tablet and would love to save as much space as possible. I don't need the moto docks (I don't have one). Basicly strip this thing down to just bare necessities. Is it even possible to do this? If so is there a ROM that gets great battery life? Thanks for reading my question.

You can flash ROM on your stock slot and then delete the useless apks.
Try any AOSP ROM. It should work fine.
Tapatalk with RAZR HD
I have downloaded tonyt's aokp rom. I have extracted the rom to its own folder and have looked at the apps in the app folder. System>app. I am not sure which of these I can get rid of. I would like to get ride of anything that is VZW or phone related just keeping maybe the contacts. I dont know what apps should be gotten rid of with out breaking the rom. Sorry I'm a noob. All I have done was flash a few roms, never tried to remove apks before. Do I need a cellphone broadcast for location services like maps and for the in browser location? I have safestrap installed. It will not let me flash a rom over stock rom. I am trying to find a way to get cwm or twrp installed instead.
ok bricked my phone. Device would restart and get the red moto logo, then nothing, blank black screen. rebooted the phone and could not get to safestrap. Used Matt's utility to install jb and reroot phone.
The procedure that I used to install the rom on my stock image is as follows:
1. copied rom zip to micro sd card
2. booted to safestrap
3. wiped cache, delvic, and system
4. installed rom zip through safestrap
5. no errors got success
6. reboot got nothing
I think anything could still happen even if SafeStrap didnt indicate any error after installation, that's why backup is important, also this ;

You will need to do a complete wipe when flashing a new ROM, including /data.
Use latest SS. And make sure the ROM is compatible with the latest SS.

How do I format the internal storage? I have about 3 roms I have running and I have games and apps that I have uninstalled that left behind folders in root folders and some apps that did not get uninstalled also left behind some data. I tried doing a factory reset and also tried using safestrap to wipe internal but it fails. I made a folder in my system folder and put 2 pics in it then factory reset, wiped system data, and checked every box in the advance wipe options and that folder (along with the others) are still there.

Every slot has its own /data partition.
After you activate a slot, wipe /data along with system and cache.
That is called full wipe. It will remove all your apps, files and user settings will be deleted.
Then flash your desired ROM.
