Come On. What do you want to prove? Our 5 MPs are better than the 8 MP? Oh no. That can not be and is not correct. The SII camera will do a lot better with the huger number of pixels. It might seem so, that the Xperia LWW Camera is better, but see this.

See the sharper image in the SII pic, rather than the much noisy LWW picture. About the colors, Sony might win, but I think the better colors are achieved by software tweaks, and the pics taken by SII can be made to look more colorful by a little editing.
About the video, again SII will win as it has a power of dual core running it.
Thanks,
Rick

one does not simply compare camera modules by the amount of megapixels.
+1 i dont known about this 1 comparsion but iam sure then 1 good 5mpx can be better than 1 bad 10mpx

Well said.
On the other hand, omg great trolling!!
Quality =/= Amount of megapixels
Well Sony's Cybershot series of mobile phones with 3mp cams did capture better photos than 5mp ones at that time.. But i think, to compare photos you need to look at them at their original size.. Not some thumbnail view Also the SII's res should be set to 5mp and then tested

Here's the problem with people. They will use contrasting logic for supporting two different theories in accordance to the situation.
A Sony fanboy will say... "Pixels do not matter at all" while comparing the SII and the Xperia Live With Walkman, but will say that "Xperia S has 12 MP man. 8 MP SII is no where".
Here I will like to mention that of the 10 people who say that amount of pixels is not what only matters, 9 do not know what else really matters. And of the 9, 5 do not know what really is pixel.
Anyways, I will like to explain one thing. It's true that number of pixels is not the only thing that matters. But it is the most important thing that matters.
The more number of pixels in the Galaxy SII just makes the picture a lot more clearer, as there are more pixels in it per unit area.
Talking about colors, I myself said that the Xperia colors are better, but it is something attainable by software (setting correct exposure and brightness). But more pixels can not be attained by software.
On the same site, check the camera sample of iPhone 4S. It has vivid colors (better than the Mini Pro), and the more amount of pixels giving a perfect picture.
Conclusion:
1. You have lots of cash, and you want a camera phone between Xperia LWW and SII. Buy the SII.
2. You have lots of cash and you have sense. Do not think of Samsung. Get the Xperia Ray. Or the Arc. Their cameras rock.
Thanks,
Rick

the most important thing? what about the size/type of the sensor used and lens then? and I claim and I will be always claiming that cramming so many MPx into a tiny smartphone is pointless, no matter if it's made by Sony or Samsung or InsertAnyBrand'sNameHere.

Did you ever notice the bulk in Galxay SII's rear? That's where the camera is. The phone had to be made bulkier to accommodate the camera. This shows that the camera lens is capable of shooting good quaility 8 MPs.
Anyways. Samsung always sucked in software optimisations. Here they did too. The images are over saturated and under exposed.
The SIII camera always sucks. Why? It's too thin to have a good camera.
But the OP was about LWW and Galaxy SII. Galaxy SII has a better camera than the LWW. It's the truth. The truth accepted by critics much more sensible than any of us in this fanboy war here.

As far as my knowledge goes it's you who started this tread. Taking the plunge to compare a 5 MP shooter with an 8 MP shooter.
Now, as you are asking me, I will assume that the Samsung Galaxy SII has a 5 MP camera. And then compare...
The Xperia LWW is better. It gives just the perfect exposure and colors. The images by the Sony camera are a bit over saturated, but that doesn't at all take away the natural look from the images. On the other hand the Samsung Device gives photographs with an yelowish tint, which does makes the images a bit dull to look. At low light, both perform equally well.
Since both of the devices have same number of pixels in the protographs they take, LWW is clearly the winner.
But unfortunately, the SII has more pixels in reality. So I do not know. I am resigning from this thread.
(I have used Samsung devices myself. And hate them. They are really poorly optimised. And they have way too many devices)
(Btw, I love the way you call it the "yellow effect". You make it seem like a feature. )
Thanks,
Rick

should you buy the xperia neo v now?
I mean its almost 1 yr old...
single core processor.....
lcd display...(not even slcd)
the only thing still makingme think about buying it is its good resolution and android 4.0 update, and maybe the camera.
currently im stuck between this and the samsung galaxy R
the galaxy R is awesome, but its kinda big and it has poor resolution for that size of screen.
so what do u think :?????
I reccomend you to buy Neo.
This is good phone.

Only you can decide. Whatever we say is irrelevant because we all have completely different SUBJECTIVE views.
Do your own research and go play with some. Then decide.
Depends what you want... Maybe wait till April for next Sony Xperia phones
If you want to but this phone because you are impressed by 8Mp cam then you are i recommend you to look for other alternative.Neo cam is not even as good as 3MP cam !
But apart from this every thing is perfect and UserInterface is terrific! Less lag but more battery consumption(but this is not a big problem when compared with camera one)!

Baloney.
Yes the cam isn't quite as good as other 8MP cams on more expensive phones and it's not quite as good as a dedicated point and shoot 6MP cam either (since that has a much bigger sensor and often hardware zoom) but it's still a fair bit better than your average 5MP phone cam.
As to the original question yes I definitely still think this phone is worth buying providing you can't afford the other stronger 8MP phones like the Motorola Droid RAZR or the HTC Sensation or the SGS2 or even the iPhone 4S. It never was flagship material but it's a stunning mid-range phone.
And if you are asking Neo V over the original then you're an idiot since the Neo V offers NOTHING new AND has a worse cam. (unlike Arc S VS Arc where the S has 400 extra Mhz)
I had the same choice of Neo VS Samsung Galaxy R and I don't regret my choice of going with the Neo one bit.
The only phone I would consider over it from SE would be the Pro since a hardware keyboard might be nice to have.
Edit: As I read your question again it seems you're actually asking NeoV VS Galaxy R not Neo VS Galaxy R....so then I'd definitely rather have the Galaxy R (though it's unlikely to get Icecream Sandwhich officially) since the original Neo's 8MP cam is taken out of the equation.
My preferences if you ignore ICS would go something like this : Flagship expensive phones > Xperia Pro > Neo> Desire S > Galaxy R > mini pro > Ray > PLAY> Neo V > all ther rest.

Hmmmm..........I said what i have felt ..Cam is not that good to be honest!
And compression leads to the downfall ..For now i think there is no solution for this problem !
The neo has a tiny sensor with 8million pixels.. I don't expect too much but comparing it to images from the iphone 4 and Samsung galaxy S2 it definitely holds its own.
I spent a lot of time playing with the Galaxy S2 while deciding on what to buy and I chose the Neo over it and the Arc... I think it's still way ahead of the game. (and cant be beat for the price)
But in the end its your choice, go with the phone that has all the features and design that suits your needs.

I did that, I played on the settings but no luck. The funny thing is that my Xperia S has 50% brightness, and it's more sharper, more realistic than the S3.
Man, I'm impressed with how many people that buy things without a LITTLE research.
For me, Super AMOLED is the best screen ever.
I just love the deep blacks and bright colors. I don't care that it doesn't look "realistic".
If you search a little bit, you'll see that super amoled oversaturate colors normaly.

Of course it's sharper. It's a smaller screen running a higher resolution (720p rgb stripe vs pentile).
I can't comment on the colours, but I've usually had my sgs 2 and 3 set to the 'movie' preset and colours are pretty decent.
I myself dislike the Xperia S's screen. There's just something about it that doesn't look very clear to me. But that's just my 2 cents

Well first of all I don't know why did you even buy a S3 if you have so much criticisms for it. You owned an Xperia S, which is a relative new phone, and you simply bought S3 when it came out. What does this tell us about you? That you know nuts about phone and when something screws up because you didn't do any research on it, you simply blame everyone else but yourself because you bought the phone on impulse, because of advertisements.
Everyone of us has our own preference. Your phone lags, that is probably because of the user, who is you. I rooted my S3, and even before I root, it doesn't even lag a second. And yes I used Xperia S before, I saw it in my face before deciding that it is not the phone for me and decided to go for S3.

I bought an S3 to know if it really beats the Xperia S. Now I know plain and simple Samsung is a "BIG LIAR" a company who put money on advertisement alone, but producing cheap phones. Regarding the lag issues, I visit one Samsung store just earlier, I tested their phones and mine also, same issue, my phone and "Samsung's store phone" has lag issues, now can you say "that is probably because of the user"? You know sometimes "to see is to believe"
Damn, so all those reviews about how quick the S3 is must have been paid for Samsung marketing.... We've all been duped!!
coming from a note 1, Im a little shocked to see just how badly compressed the ZU's camera is.. I dont care about the lack of flash, but the colour is terrible and i often cant see a great improvement from VGA res photos to "8mp" (actually apparently only 7mp.. and only 4:3) .. im clinging to the fact that its the jpg compression that is causing the majority of the lacking detail (looks very much like it) and that an update somewhere along the line will let you save as fine quality or ideally TIF / RAW
I haven't actually got the phone yet but have seen a lot of reviews on this topic and they all agree with you... I think your right that they have rushed out the phone to early adopters to beta test if you like before releasing to the western markets. I'm pretty sure there'll be an update with in a month that improves camera, screen issues as well as Sony app crashes.

It's completely the JPG compression. At 8MP setting, the resolution is 3264x2448. That would be a 22 meg uncompressed file. The photos the ZU takes are 1.5 megs as a JPG. They're way overcompressed and show ridiculous amounts of artifacting. Why do they do this? What year is this? Are we concerned about a 5 meg photo?
My guess is some marketing / support execs decided they didn't want to take support calls for people trying to email a few 5meg JPEGs so they just crank it up to heavily compressed so the files are 1 meg and email easily without any conversion.
I just hate that everything has to be decided based on the lowest common denominator of idiots. Clearly though, that's what's happened here because the camera sensor is probably not bad.
It will be funny when people are all excited to buy Honami because of the 21mp sensor but the final JPGs will be compressed to ****.
Yeah, after 2-3 weeks with this, a coming to love it in general, fact is the camera will have me off to the Note 3... Silly Sony.
Lenovo super camera....a lot better jpg's . Works with xzu.

i tried this but always got "the camera is in use, close apps using it" .. even directly after a boot.. (I also read reports of v3.5 containing trojans) which version did you try?

The XZU has a camera? Wow, it's so far down my list of priorities, I guess I just didn't notice.
I was actually impressed with the camera on this smartphone. So much better than my Xperia T on color reproduction and noise reduction.
I feel like the camera is really good in light but useless in low light. I love my phone but I may buy something like the galaxy camera or if the qx10 gets a larger holder I would buy that.
so is this truly a software bug and can it fixed by sony

I myself don't bother too much with great camera quality on a smartphone.. Nowadays, it's about capturing the moment rather than checking every pixel out of a picture.. If you are really into such a thing, those QX series is a great addition i guess

I think Sony is using a cheap sensor on the XZU. The pictures are just plain ugly comparative to older phone cameras. The worst picture taken from my HTC Butterfly looks way better than the best picture taken by my XZU.

I'm contented with how the picture that I took with my XZU turned out. Maybe because I am not a "photographer"
Note: Photos were cropped and I just encircled some parts of it, as I used them in reporting something at work. No filter done though!

From the pics you posted you can clearly (or not) notice the lack of detail. It looks like a collage. Compare that to the photo from my HTC Butterfly at the same 8MP.

The quality... is pretty bad.
My Galaxy Note 2 camera is much much better.
The quality is so bad that even for a basic photo of friends it doesnt do.
Like the other guy said, if you take a photo of a whiteboard at college, or at a presentation it comes out so bad that you can barely see whats on it.
I don't know how you people are managing to screw things up so bad with the camera. It's no Lumia 1020, but it's really not that bad if you don't use the standard Sony app. Or even if you do, it's fine so long as you don't zoom in. Not sure how you're going to claim it's not good enough for casual pictures of friends. I find it had to believe there are so many photography enthusiasts out there all of a sudden. Before I had a smartphone, I didn't own a camera at all, and I know many people for whom this is also true. I suspect this is the case for many users. Any camera is better than no camera.

common man the pictures are really bad and i wish this is just a software issue, as I love this phone and wish at least it takes good pictures but really the pictures are bad, can someone maybe contact sony and ask them so that we can get this to rest and keep wishing for things that might never improve
I found a couple of G2 photosets on flickr. They look better than the older leaked photos.

Post any other pictures and videos you may find. I know some of you suckers already have the G2 from AT&T. Let me see what you're made of.
Thanks for the links! I am very interested to see how the camera compares to the Note 3. And these pictures look pretty good!
I was definitely going to get the Note 3 until I read it doesn't have OIS, now I am considering the G2... And the price is pretty good also. Only $575 off contract vs $725 for the Note 3 on AT&T.
Yes, those pics look awesome!!

No it doesnt, Note 3 has digital image stabilisation.
Yep, and in my opinion there is HUGE difference between that and hardware OIS...
Makes so many more of my pictures keepers.

Well I saw this yesterday
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Camera-shootout-Note-3-vs-Galaxy-S4-vs-G2-vs-iPhone-5-vs-One_id47239
I can't find any definitive proof that the Note 3 doesn't have OIS. The O in OIS stands for optical, so there is no such thing as a digital OIS. That's just simple image stabilization, without the O.
Nvm. Poopoo it doesn't have it. I wasn't planning on getting it anyway. No one bothers to mention it besides dpreview. At least I can rely on them to get the camera specs right.
http://connect.dpreview.com/post/7967117746/hands-on-with-samsung-gaalxy-note-iii
So far the LG G2 is my fallback plan. The Xperia Z1 has established itself as having an awful camera, and screen, and is big and heavy for a small 5". The Note 3 is more of the same. I am sick of my cheap ass built Note 2 with squishy cover. No plans to upgrade to the same thing. My only hope is the Oppo N1 comes out to be amazing, and has a killer camera. All other companies have laid out their disappointing hands.

Yeah, I'd love to see more actual user pictures also!
I would like a bigger screen than my HTC One, but I really like the camera on it and want to see what the G2 is capable of....

There are already a bunch of shootouts and comparisons out there. The HTC camera has only 4MP so it looks blurry no matter what. It couldn't compare to 8MP cameras, much less the newer 13MP ones right now. HTC also has very bad processing with weird colors and heavy sharpening and noise removal. It was one of the best low light shooters on Android, but the G2 can compete with OIS, and has much better resolution.

Most of the pictures I've seen are from reviewers, not average users and that's what I'd like to see.
Just because the HTC One only has 4mp doesn't automatically mean blurry... I'm a crap photographer which I'll readily admit and I've got some great shots on the HTC One by just pointing and clicking. Here are a couple examples... If the G2 can do better, I'll be really happy with it! I'm tempted to head to an AT&T store this morning.

You are right in a way. I have HTC One too but pictures become blur as you start to zoom-in because it is only 4MP. Whereas 13MP on the other hand has 3 times more detail in the picture. And to make the point clear, in a common user perspective G2 can blow HTC one out of water (in camera).
A quick pic I took in my office yesterday. Auto settings, didn't change anything.

Some pics from yesterday, not really trying just pointing and shooting. Also i had changed my lcd density without setting the xposed framework to put the camera back at 480 so auto focus was confused the entire time.

hello everyone
please someone explain to me why the pictures taken by the camera are so bad knowing its still an 8mp camera, my iPhone shoots better pictures than z ultra even my galaxy s2 pictures are better. It is the processing done by sony to pictures taken by camera, if yes if it is disabled will then the pictures be better , please someone explain
Over processing. It's a software issue.

How can it be fixed? By not raping our photos after we've taken them. It's an idiotic decision by Sony.
I've read that Camera Zoom on the Play Store gives better results, but you still won't get good photos unless there's a good light source. Sony needs to push out an update that corrects the over processing, but god knows if and when that will happen. In the meantime, check out the Play Store and play around with different camera apps.

They were probably trying to push it out on the market as quickly as possible, which we also saw in other areas of the software (SODs, screen issues, phantom clicks etc.)

we've had three updates in three months. Seem to be way better than Samsung.
The camera is horrible until you start manually controlling ISO. Even in lower light I keep it at 400 or 800, anything over that will just look like **** but you'll be surprised with the quality of the pictures you can take when you set the ISO to 200 or 400
I think it's not just software that's the problem with the Ultra. I think Sony intentionally used a very cheap sensor that is marketed as 8MP but is actually just comparable to VGA. Gives me the reason to save up for the X-E2.

You should try Lenovo super camera.( Google the apk) It really improves the image quality. But i agree. It looks like 2MP on stock camera.

Agreed. SONY is so cheap.
They simply don't want to make a perfect device.
IMO, the camera takes ok pictures for social media use, if I need something to hang in my living room, I'll use my dslr or rx100
if you try to take pic with Ultra Z in the house the pic is so bad i don't want even look at it, it contains alot of grain, but outside the house the pic is ok. i got also Xperia arc, the photo taken by arc is much better than Ultra Z.
Poor i did not know this before buying the thing

I agree I will now likely be returning the device.
My 4-5 year old Sony Xperia X1 with a 3.2 MP camera takes better photos then this phone.
Basically the ZU camera is not usable for anything but taking a photo of a sign / piece of paper to remember / remind you of some notes.
Forget about taking a photo of your friends, or anything really.
Its quite depressing, i love everything about the phone and really want to keep it, but the quality is so bad that the word bad, is a grave overstatement and makes it sound good.

Totally agree, i can't put it in better words. I can't imagine that sony uses this kind of quality in this high end phone. That really isn't logically, I assume it's a software thing.
The real reason come from the thickness...
A normal sensor is very thick! Close the Z Ultra. How you want to do like this.
Software will probably help, but don't dream: Z Ultra and his sensor is to thin.
Have you tried a different camera app like FV-5? I hope the pictures can be fixed with an app because I went in to the store to test out the device and the photos were really terrible!
After reading all the review and my device photo result, i think i know the culprit. It is related to the no flash condition on the Ultra, thus to be able to reach higher light into the sensor, they purposefully increase the ISO level to the extreme. Thus the grainy photo. Once you reduce the ISO into the low 100-400 with manual mode, the quality increased tremendously.
But how to counter attack the reduced light? well, none that i know of with stock camera, but the Camera FV5 with modified shutter speed seems like the best solution. For me, even though the stock experience is bad, when tweaked, it's very adequate for an 8mp
