[Q] Battery charges to 40% max :( - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I got my new S3 yesterday and I plugged it in before booting the phone so it could charge, I didn't let it charge to 100% though.
And now, after being plugged in over night, it just charged to 40%. Never goes above.
My version is XXLE8 stock.
Now after 3 hours of usage it is at 33%

The big hill is the time it was in charging status over night.
Can I wipe the stats somehow or what do I have to do?
Thanks

Hi,
Which kind of charger did you use? The original one? It's like you used a less powerfull (ex: <1 A output). Your charging profile is strange effectivly...
Can you install baterry monitor widget pro and say us how is calibrate your battery (mAh) and if your charger is configure at the right intensity (the original one is a 1500 mA).
Try to charge it turning off your phone.... and eventually wipe battery stats (useless but...)

I am friend with same problem. hoping someone can help.
My original charger is off or the signal that he is carrying. bought mine yesterday.

Im charging with the original charger that came with my S3 (USB cable with a power adapter thingy, you know)
Here is a screen shot of Battery Monitor Widget. I plugged it in a few minutes ago.
There is a calibrate option in the app, but I dont know what to type in there.

You have to make a 40% cycle charge and you'll check several informations about your battery properties... After this, you will have to define 2100mAh for your battery and 1500mA for your charger output intensity (using parameters windows).
Wait and see... Do you have another charger to test?

It is charging now with the original S3 charger and is at 39%. Lets see if it goes above now.
I have a charger from my old Galaxy S i9000 (original) here, too.

First your battery capacity is configure at 1500mA in your screen... It's not the right one! You have to change it via calibration menu/add newer battery

OK I will change the two parameters and then use it for one day and report back.
It is now at 41% but it is climbing very slow. It climbed from 33% to 39% very fast and then it slowed down dramatically.
thank you

You juste have to make a great 100% charging cycle and see...

I put to find matching with a more powerful charger in my galaxy tab 7 plus.
Can it cause harm?
With the original charger from S3 is no more than 40%.
At Battery Widget information also were wrong, now I have got.
Appeared at 1500 mAh.

No you can't , your battery just need 1,5A output, if your charger output is 2A, it'll not give more then 1,5A...

With the charger from the tablet settings and changing the Battery Widget from 1500 to 2100, the battery charged 100%

Great!
Your original charger is probably burn...

but it is new ...... how could this happen? Came from the factory like that.

Probably fabrication default...?

Hi, I changed the settings in the app and it charged to 100% with the original S3 charger. It took a while however.
And as you can see the battery is quite good.
I hope this looks good, does it? Or is something broken?

Looks good.... Let it have some full charge cycles for full calibration and it will rock

cwm installed and I ventured to install several custom roms, and inform all of the battery with 1500mAh. even now returning to stock rom remains the same information. I'll have to create a new battery in and inform widget Baterry 2100mAh.
on the charger, went to the store and exchanged the part, and is now carrying normal.

Just use it fora few days to a few weeks, than it should be fine.

Extra Battery

Where do we buy an extra battery for the HTC TyTN? (or Dopod, O2 Hermes...)
It is really frustrating that HTC doesnt seem to market any of these...
TyTN extra batteries are available
http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=4633
or here http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=138243&asource=HTC_TYTN_VP
wow prices are arounr $50-60 + shipping, pretty steep. I think i will hold out for a while
TyTN battery available on eBay now
http://cgi.ebay.com/Replacement-Bat...ryZ75446QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I bought the extra battery from eXpansys. Be advised that this is a slightly different battery than the one that came with your TyTN:
Stock battery: HERM161, 1350 mA
Replacement battery: HERM160, 1300 mA
I can't honestly say if I've seen a difference between the two batteries, but you should be aware of the difference!

A final word to the wise on buying the eXpansys spare:
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=138243&asource=HTC_TYTN_VP
The text description says it's a 1350 mA battery, but if you zoom in on the picture, you'll see that it's actually a 1300 mA HERM160 battery... and that's what they sent me!

goestoeleven,
I ordered mine a few days ago and it will probably be the same battery. Does it work well on the TyTN and how did you get it charged?
Thanks.
I can only charge one battery at a time (the one inside the phone)...
Hence my rant on the thread about Cradles without extra battery slots...

I got my battery but it has been more than 24 hours and the red light is still on for charging. How long did it take for you? Thanks.
Initially I just charged it for a few hours. It behaved exactly the same as the original stock battery.
It's my second battery and I still cannot get it to charge -- the red light is on for days whether I try AC power or hooked into the PC via USB.
The battery cannot be bad so it must be my HTC TyTN. Any ideas what I need to look at in the battery comparment?
Thanks.

This red red light no charge business not just with TyTn batteries but several other phones and different battery types. Usually occurs with a problem with feedback from cells in battery to the charging circuit. Most oftgen there is no real fault with either battery or phone. It normally occurs if the battery is allowed to completely discharge. I am not aware of an easy fix, except I have faced the problem myself and with original battery. Also had it with another LG phone. On these occasions I got them to work eventually by several times plugging and unplugging charger lead and also taking battery out of phone for ten minutes then reinserting worked once. All a bit hap hazard but they always worked eventually and once going worked fine after that.
Good luck
Mike

Absolutely butt slow charging..

Coming from an iphone 4s to sgs2 and now to xps... Man... Charging is a pain for andriods phones... Xps is a great phone.. But got to get use to the slow charging and lousy battery life...
How many time since you first turned on your XS?

My phone takes about 2 hours and 20 mins to charge from 5% to 100%. That's pretty decent, isn't it?
It does charge slowly if you keep the screen on and use its multimedia functions, as I suspect the drain is substantial, but if simply on standby, mine charges reasonably quickly.

For the first week the charging is very slow, then it will go faster, same for the battery duration, I think it' just a battery calibration ^ ^
I charge XS with 2A-output charger
and Modify Micro-USB Cable ....D+ / D- 2pin short
The Cable only have Charing Function
now XS can enable Quick-Charing...Charing with 1.4A

Ya, mine no longer charges from PC USB when PC is sleeping. When PC is awake the charging is way too slow. My old HD2 could charge fine from PC and this saves me from having to plug in its dedicated charger to power socket.
Hmm, im reading that most of you get a full charge, from 0%, in just about 1 hour. Mine is taking 2 hours, why is that? I've had the phone for a week.
EP800 charger maybe?

I believe you can pull from 100 to 400 mA from the USB port on a computer.
And the wall charger should put out at least double that. So ofcourse a charge will be slower when you can't pump as much juice into the battery as you can with a dedicated wall charger.
You can on some mainboards let the USB ports stay alive while the rest of the system is a sleep. But sure it's only logical that when you put your computer to sleep, so will the USB ports.
HD2 is able to get charged through USB when PC is asleep, but not XS. For those who're interested.

Portable Battery Backup

I reckon Im a heavy user. 2hrs of telephone calls, 2hrs of on screen time in a period of six hours at an average.
Therefore I find it difficult to make the batt last through the day on a single charge. Since the battery is not removable I was thinking of buying a portable battery backup which I can use to charge it on the move. Have the following questions regarding the same. Please help if u can.
1. Is it safe to use a backup portable on the go charger?
2. What are some good brands?
3. Do they have a good life?
4. Any ones you would like to recommend?

Do you have any experience with it?
It has 2.0A & 2.1A power output ports, but I'm not sure it will be able to fasty-charge my XPS.

The "official" unit that will be able to fast charge just like your plugged into the wall with the EP851 is the Sony CP-A2LAS. It has a 4000mah capacity so it will be able to give your phone two full charges from zero. It was just released in Japan and will be around the world globaly soon.

sony CP-A2LS is very very slow. it's not like ep850/851. it's just like USB in PC - 0,5A...

I have an anker that i bought for germany and it preduces 3amps max and can charge 2 devices simultaneously it was only £40 on a discount but i still have it after nearly a year and it still works perfectly and is a 10000mah so it can charge the xperia u 4-5 times i can only drain 25% over a whole day with gps,bluetooth,wifi,3g permanently on so i can use google maps
this battery looks intresting...i also have the same battery drain issue...thinking of giving this external battery a try...

[Q] Galaxy S3 - Loses Power While Charging!?

Hi guys,
I have had my S3 for 2 years now and noticed this problem for the first time around 5 weeks or so ago. Basically i noticed that it would not charge much after a long period of time charging, and also when using the device the battery would deplete a lot more quickly than what I am used to.
On investigation it appears that I am losing power while charging. I downloaded the application 'galaxy charging' which lets me know how many mA are being drawn etc.
Via mains the reference is always 1098 or around 1amp as it should be and via USB it is 466mA. This app monitors the average current being drawn while the device is charging and i notice that EVERY time i charge via either mains or USB the device NEVER charges at its max capacity (1098mA via mains and 466 via USB)
What i see which happens is as soon as i plug in my charger to mains it will start off close to maximum, around 800mA and then after 10 seconds or so it will slowly come down to say 600mA, a further 20 seconds or sooner we are down to 300mA and eventually it will either settle around this figure if i am lucky so i actually charge my phone (all be it very slowly) but much more likely it will always drop off to 100mA. At this power the phone drains more battery being on than power being given to it to charge so the battery goes down while charging.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?
Troubleshooting attempted:
I have replaced the battery with a new one. I still get the same problem
I have replaced the USB lead, i *might* get a slightly higher stable mA on average on one but maybe this is probably just coincidental
I have tested via mains and USB, the error occurs on both, I have tested mains where nothing else uses the socket and USB on a PC where the only USB port being used is the phone.
I have changed my ROM, I am now using ArchiDroid. I thought doing a complete reset and putting on a new OS might fix this but apparently not.
Right now I am out of ideas and am left thinking this is some internal hardware error, but can anyone else offer any suggestions or has this happened to anyone else?
Appreciate any responses,
James
You could try a custom kernel which allows you to override the charging current, but you may find the charging circuit inside the phone is damaged.
Easy solution if so is to get a desktop charger and second battery.

Hi everyone, thanks for all your replies. However it was this one that fixed my issue. Since i already had the boeffla kernal on my phone i found the setting to 'ignore unstable power' and since having that checked i now charge at a constant 460mA via USB and 1098mA via mains. Thank you so much!!

find a good cable and a good 1.5A-2A charger, the junk HTC gave us is something out of their "just include something" bin. I haven't even taken the stock charger out of its packaging. its good in a pinch when you must have a charge, but not worth using on a higher power device like the N9.
also, give a kernel like elementalX a try, it should enable faster charging..
anker makes some good self regulated (based on needs) multi port chargers, give those a try with some anker 1' cables.

I'm using my note 4 fast charger and cable. Can't be better quality than that. And as mentioned, I'm already on ElementalX
After you change the cable you might realize that this won't solve the problem. Most of the times it works better if you simply reboot the tablet, the charging time will significantly decrease (~3-4 h depending on your kernel). Share if something changes.

Yeah that's not normal... I would now try the stock charger... That's what I use and it works fine... If that doesn't help then I'll would call Google for a replacement
I'll wait for 5.1 to come out and will take a decision then. Thanks for your input
it's not normal for this to happen, but i've seen a few threads where this does happen and it doesn't matter the kernel, charger or cables. sometime the device gets stuck at charging at less than usb 2.0 speeds. it doesn't happen all the time, but it's pretty crappy when it does happen. one suggestion was to unplug and replug each time you charge it to hopefully not get stuck with the bug through that charge session. when i do catch it trickle charging i just replug it. i generally charge in just over 4hrs for a full charge using a samsung note charger and cable.
I have been using the stock charger with a third-party USB cable (I needed something longer) and it has never taken more than 3-4 hours for a full charge.
Try using Ampere app from the play store to test different chargers and cable combinations. It helped me to eventually go with a iPad charger and a 20awg 1m cable which charges at an average of 1700mha which means a full charge of about 3hrs or less (stock ROM + ElementalX fast charge enabled)

Not sure if this is the same issue, but when I charge my n9 overnight, the battery indicator only shows like 23% charge. However, if I restart the n9 it updates and shows 100%.
Anyone have that issue? Buy
I think my Nexus 9 charges faster with the Fire-Ice Kernel
