what are the best ways to improve battery life. excluding lowering brightness and using wifi. is there a "sweet spot" to hold the cpu max & min frequency on? Or anything else in that regard.
oh yes btw i am on android 4.0.3 using a cm9 beta
TRY THESE SETTINGS. Flashed a Photon to GSM for my father. In a very rural area in WV with 30-40 calls, multiple emails/texts, and no wifi has about 40% or more left after a 12hr day that involves a bit of driving as well.

You can use those settings.. You just need to be unlocked, have a custom kernel installed, and have setcpu or equivalent.

best solution for best battery life is to not be on a beta. go to CM7 or another GB Rom for best battery life. CM9 is going to be rough due to patches and workarounds bc of missing drivers.

Don't overclock. Drop Max frequency down to 1000. There isn't visible performance gains from overclocking to 1300 anyway. At least from my experience. It eats your battery more than you might think.

That's about double what mine is using on standby with no use. I'm looking at about 1.6% per hour standby. I'm on the RUU 2.11 radio too. I've got my sync schedule set up to fairly conservatively, and made sure it doesn't update whether whenever the widget is viewed.

I'd point the finger at the ROM. I'm using the same radio and getting much better results than you're showing, and I'm using a Sense ROM. Your's should be equal or better than that. Even under moderately heavy use I can eek out 10 to 12 hours on a charge. You should definitely be doing better than that on an AOSP ROM, I would think.
I would stay off LTE unless you're actually using it. It's just a waste if your phone is just idling.

CDMA is STILL a battery killer. It can kill a battery FAR, FAR faster than LTE ever could. I'm inclined to agree with Fixxxer2008; what's the point in having LTE if you can't just use it? And at 1.4 percent per hour idling, I'm not sure that qualifies as a grotesque overuse of power. I think that's conservative by ANY measure.
Buy the extended battery.
I refuse to neuter my phone.

If the OP wants to take the time to deal with it, I would wipe /system, /cache, dalvik cache and /data and redo their rom over again with only restoring user data at the most. Perhaps something just coincidentally went out of wack with the latest update you did for the ROM. I doubt it's the radio doing it, but it would take more time/effort to know like reading through the logcat to see if there's anything weird going on and such.
i was gettibg pretty decent battery with CM7 + DreamKernal + MR 3.5 radio
i could watch a whole movie and it would use abour 10% battery
that and when i'd go to sleep(normally 5 - 6 hours), when i woke up it lost about 7 - 8% battery.
i switched to the latest Synergy + DreamKernal + MR 3.5 radio
only did so because of issues with Skype
now it consumes 13 - 15% battery watching a movie, and wheb i wake up it's used more then 20% battery.
i have the 2750 extended battery

Use a ROM that allows you to toggle between 3 and 4g. That way you can switch to 4g when you'really in data-heavy mode and idle in 3g.
I believe at least a Chingy related ROM has such a toggle.

Austin just got LTE and my boss just got the skyrocket. Screen seems about the same from what I saw but performance stock wise the ogsII was much faster but internet was smoking. ok, thanks for the replies!!
Is there anyway to get better dl/up speed on the ogsII? On the inspire, there were many different radios and APNs that one could use to get good bandwidth. If I could get consistantly get 5mbps down, i'd be more than content.
You could try flashing a different modem. There's a thread in the development section.
There are some TCP buffer tweaks in my kernel that might help.
The only thing the SR has to offer is faster data when it's actually working - which is apparently not something you can count on with the SR, I've been seeing lots of reports of problems with data dropping and poor battery performance.
Just flashed kj1 with your keranl entropy but I still don't see the speed my inspire used to get. I could get 4 down consistently on the inspire but only see 2 down on gs2

battery life is pretty bad (like 4-6% an hour idle, 10+% with light usage)
i have not had ANY network connectivity problems, but what is the common factor in those complaining of network loss? do they have LTE in their area, or are they strictly on fauxg?

dont forget, i am in an LTE area, i have my wifi off and running touchdown for my exchange email (set to poll every 10 minutes)
i have had much better battery life from my OG GS2, running unnamed rom with the same setup, aside from LTE of course.
if you live in an LTE area and want LTE, go skyrocket, if you dont live in an LTE area or expect to get it in the coming months, go OG GS2.
aside from the battery life (which doesnt matter much to me since i always have chargers handy) its a good phone, despite what others here feel about it.
it is true, that its not as fast in benchmarks, but after loading up my own custom rom on my skyrocket, it can hang with my GS2 running unnamed in usage, but it flies when it comes to downloading/browsing the web. i like the physical feel of the OG GS2 better too. if i didnt have LTE in my area, i wouldnt have the skyrocket, lol.

I lived in tribalart's radio thread flashing radio/ril combo's trying to get that damn thing to have a decent signal. I had the SR for about a week. Living in a non-LTE area, I found the battery to be weak. I could stretch it out to 18 hours if I only used the phone for reading email, but as soon as I started using the phone as a phone, tried to do any web browsing, or just playing around, then battery life dropped.
With the SII, I can stretch to 36 hours with only email reading, and easily go 18 to 24 while actually using the phone for phone calls and whatever else I have the silly thing for.
The screen resolution thing is really not an issue. Compare the PPI with your computer monitor and you might suddenly stop seeing "jagged" characters on your phone (or you'll never stop seeing them on your computer monitor.)
Physical size was a minor annoynace (but an annoyance still) for me. The SR just barely went over the threshold of being comfortable for me. (Of course, I'd get over that if I could have a Note.)
CIQ is/was a big deal for me. I can not and will not support a device that contains that rootkit, even if I can remove it. The ONLY way I have to influence AT&T is with my money, and by returning a CIQ device (SR) and buying a non-CIQ device (SII), I've given the strongest message I can (short of terminating my service.)

At Verizon Tech Support they can push the newest eprl and re provision your SIM from their end but there isn't a way an end user can really request an EPRL update as it's supposed to happen periodically when it's necessary. That being said, 15098 is definitely the latest for 4G smartphones and if the server has setup the push to your MDN then pull your battery and SIM out for approx 1 minute and re-power it all back up, walk away from the phone for about 5 minutes and then check it to see if it updated.

Just did precisely that, and it is still 15088. Powered off, Removed SIM and batt for 2 mins. Powered back up, waited 10 mins. Still 15088
I'm sure this isn't a huge deal since 4G is very strong in my area, but it could be something to do with how it is provisioned on their end. I also have the problem with 4G continually dropping out while Mobile Hotspot is turned on.

Yea, I wouldn't bother, if you were somewhere it mattered the only negative impact would be that you just wouldn't get new 4G data towers since that EPRL was released, which was in early December.

My understanding of a custom kernel underclocking is that it only does it when the phone is in an unused state then when you're actively using the phone the overclocking takes effect and then you'll be running at 1.83GHz. Plus, the EVO isn't dual core is it?

I understand the benefits of overclocking and underclocking, and there is always a compromise. A topic entirely outside the scope of this thread.
I know there used to be a build prop line you could alter to force the phone to always use both cores, and i can't find the link anymore does any body remember it or know where i can find it

I know there used to be a build prop line you could alter to force the phone to always use both cores, and i can't find the link anymore does any body remember it or know where i can find it

The main effect of that change in HC is to burn through the battery faster. You can accomplish that more easily by turning up screen brightness!
HC doesn't manage multiple cores well. Forcing it to be on doesn't mean that HC will assign threads to it.
And if you're running an ICS alpha, you don't need that change. ICS handles multi-cores fine.
Im still in ginger bread would it help there.

Ugghhhh ..... my bad. In my post above, I said HC where I meant GB. My comments above actually apply to GB, so - no.
how much is the battery difference between the regular mode and the dual core always on mode?
drastic from what I remember

yeah it will chew some battery up fast, also runs higher temps, blah blah blah not needed for a daily phone user. if you are modding out to use your phone for something else (heavy into games or some kind of benchmark testing) then it could be beneficial, but not needed for 99% of programs or users.
with the stock settings, you will see the 2nd core kick on when 1st one starts to get up in a higher frequency due to processing load. 2nd is always on in a sense but more as an idle state since it ramps up when needed. turning the 2nd core to "always on" basically keeps it always active for even the smallest of tasks.
I like the engineering behind leaving it stock. stock does use both cores still, lower temps, better battery life, and gets the job done.
Is there a way to just use 3g? Like disable 4g. F.E., an app or code.
I want to test battery life, even though the dna radios switch better and are easier on battery. Thanks!

Unfortunately I don't like posting specific Roms in Q&A Section. But I know Venom has a 3G/4G toggle. Not sure what the guys used for it. If you really want to know, I will ask Nitsuj how it was done.
Check out the app called phone info. I'm sure one of the options will do that for you.

that's a good one and the old Thunderbolt LTE ON/ OFF app works too... and has a cooler shortcut icon lol
just toggle the mode to CDMA Auto (PRL) to force only 3G

Here's the one I use. Last week when I was stuck somewhere and bored I decided to try several of the apps. Probably 4 or 5. This one ended up being my favorite by far because it's very straight forward, one click on the shortcut to open the menu, and it's not a huge battery hog like the ads in some of the other ones.

Also if you have apps that are like toolbox or system type apps you might already have an app with a shortcut to the hidden phone info.
Just wondering if you noticed any increase in battery life when going to 3g

I notice a huge difference, unless the 4G signal itself is really strong. 4G being enabled in a 3G only area, or with a weak 4G signal, uses up A LOT of battery. Also if you run LTE/CDMA instead of the entire global radios being enabled that also helps with battery life for me, but I'm sure different hardware on the user end and different hardware from the network that's being transmitted all play in bigtime.
Thanks guys. I'll report back later.

What toggle did you use? I found if I clicked cdma it only gave me 1x. If I hit cdma auto, it gave me 3g.
I mean, I only wanna do this for a day to see if there's a huge difference of turning off 4g
Edit: bakemcbride21 already said cdma auto my bad
