wt19i does not have a built in recovery like the samsung phones.
you have to install it.
if you have root already, then proceed to this thread and follow instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1345741
browse the last few pages of that thread, i believe somebody has got it working.

Unless you're talking about CWM recovery (keep pressing repeatedly volume down when you see Sony logo, until you enter CWM), there's also a so called 'safe mode', check this thread.

You can't install cyanogenmod before you have unlocked your bootloader. You can unlock by official sony method for developers (look in my signature for a guide) or by testpoint method. Otherwise you can't install a rom for unlocked bootloader because you aren't able to flash a kernel boot.img.
When your bootloader is unlocked, in most custom kernels cwm is integrated
Don't try to flash a rom for unlocked bootloader on a locked bootloader, otherwise your device will brick and you will have to flash the original firmware with flashtool!
Ah btw to install cwm on ics you must have rooted ics (you can't root ics like gingerbread firmware .42, you will have to do it like this) and then you can download the x-parts app from playstore which can automaticly install cwm
I rooted device and have X-Parts.
Installed Recovery 5.5.0.4 by pvyParts.
I am able to restart in recovery mode.
Do I understand it right?
Even if I have recovery installed I won't be able to install CM or other ROM with locked bootloader?

You can install roms especially made for locked bootloader, like ics based "real ics lite" or "MiniCMSandwich". There are some MIUI rom's around here, too, but stock rom is the smoothest

These are the apps on your sdcard. Be sure you have ca 1,5 gb of free storage on your sdcard when you start the backup. The size depends on how many apps are installed/etc but 1,5 should be good to be on the safe side

the most easy way to flash custom rom is to unlock your bootloader first...then flash any custom kernel that have root and CWM pre-installed...then you can flash any custom rom without any problem....

I wouldn't do it with the kernel to flash, cause if something goes wrong you have the ray kernel on mini pro and you will have to try to unlock bootloader and flash other kernel. I would just flash the ftf file for .42 and root, run local-prop and upgrade to ics and run push-root-files.
had $tucked same situation

Okay, have you got latest flashtool installed? Please install all drivers for all phones and modes from flashtool installation folder -> drivers.
Turn phone off, take off battery, insert battery, hold volume down, connect usb, flash stock rom!
That should work, try it again.
Be sure the custom rom you flash is same as the base you used before. I mean if you flash an ics custom rom, you have to be on ics before, same on gingerbread

People with locked bootloaders please read this
u have installed a recovery mode (using x-parts or any other methods) to your system partition. When u flash a rom, it formats system partition. so u can't go back to recovery until u bootup and install it again. to get a permanent recovery, u have to unlock bootloader and flash a kernel that have a recovery mode (it's getting installed to your boot partition). so it won't get wiped by a rom flash.
Hello ravin
You gave us the reason, and a solution for unlocked bootloaders... The question is that the problem happens in locked ones.
Anyone knows how to solve this?
There are plenty of roms for Locked Bl, so it is just a questionvof method with the Cwm installation.
Thanks for your input!

u mean flashing cwm also with the rom?
that's a great idea!
Hi Folks,
I have a stock .587 firmware with locked BL.
I have done some tweaks on it listed below:
- New adreno libs.
- Walkman port V6 by ThilinaC
- removed bloatwares manually and freezed some others.
- JB SystemUI changes by ThilinaC
- adrenaline boost, etc.
I was learning on decompiling and recompiling the apk's. So I picked up the simplest one. i.e. enabling on screen buttons in framework-res.apk.
I made change into in one of the xml and I successfully rebuilt the apk. and flashed it using root explorer. But it gave bootloops.
I tried starting CWM recovery using volume down button at the Sony logo as usual. But it didnt start. I tried so many things like connecting to USB and restarting the phone at that time to start recovery by same pressing volume down button method.
But it didnt work still.
Since I was not able to go into recovery, and since my nand backup was some days old and had some data which was needed.
I flashed only system partition from the .587 ftf. using flashtool and rooted the phone again using normal procedure.
I thought the volume down button will work for recovery but it is still not working. (The button works normally when phone is on i.e for volume down process.)
Please help me what can be done.
P.S.: As of now I can go into recovery using x-parts or any other tool like titanium. But only manual recovery entry is not working.
So it means, I wont be able to go into recovery if I get bootloops again. And I am afraid to change/port anything on my phone now.

back button also didnt work.. Thanks for your reply anyways....
To add to my point....when I repeatedly press volume down/back button, the LED turns blue,,,but as per my observation, previously it used to stay till recovery starts, but now it turns on for 4-5 seconds and then goes off, and then the Experia bootanim shows up.
Is it like the exploit which activates recovery at boot time is damaged?(just a guess)..If maybe yes..how can I solve it?
Try to install recovery again via flashtool.

Initially, I had installed CWM thru DoomLoRD's rooting toolkit. Then I had installed x-parts by pvyParts. There it said a new CWM version was available(v5.5). So I had upgraded that.

There is one version floating around which is using tapping on screen to enter in recovery, so since for you, back and volume- didn't work. Tap on screen was only option left, having in mind that you said that you can enter recovery using xparts, meaning that your recovery is installed ok.
p.s. I doubt you used doomlord's root toolkit to install CWM

Hello there!
This question might have appeared alot but I'll try to be as short and accurate as possible on the following:
About two weeks ago, I decided to root my Sony Live With Walkman (4.0.4 Ice cream sandwich) and now I'm thinking of installing Cyanogenmod 9 stable release. But I'll leave this mod for the last part and let us focus on the rooting process I've done.
I've used the following tutorial: talk.sonymobileDOTcom/thread/41119?start=0&tstart=0
At first, I was unsuccesful but in the second try I had managed to root my device (Unlocked bootloader).
Being a bit tired over the official Sony ICS, I thought of putting Cyanogen to my device. This is where the things get confusing for me:
I've spotted multiple tutorials and each one is different and unclear to me. These two are the ones I'm thinking of as the most reliable sources:
- wiki.cyanogenmodDOTorg/wiki/Sony_Ericsson_Live_with_Walkman:_Full_Update_Guide
- technologic101.wordpressDOTcom/2012/03/12/tutorial-how-to-install-cyanogenmod-9-0-ics-on-your-se-xperia-2011-device/
So, I have Cyanogen9 coconut, drivers, fastboot, google apps and proper FTF file downloaded.
But what now? Which tutorial is better and accurate for my state of device? Am I risking a brick by doing this? What are the current downsides of Cyanogenmod9 for this device?
Please, write your opinions, explain or link me to the proper guides for my case. I am grateful for any kind of information you give me!
Thanks!

Is kernel the TFT file or the Cyanogenmod zip file (about 125MB)? And how do I flash this with Flashtool?
Boot.img inside the zip is the kernel. Extract and flash that file using fastboot. After flashing the kernel, start your phone and enter recovery. From recovery flash the zip files

Okay then you have done have of the work.
Now backup all your contacts, apps, sms's etc. Then power off your device and boot into fastboot mode. Then take the kernel from the CM9 zip and flash it. After that start your phone and just when the logo gets brighter press the volume down button with which you will boot into the CWM recovery. After that navigate to backup and restore and backup your rom. Then do a wipe data/factory reset ,then wipe chache and after that go to advanced and then wipe the Dalvik Cache. After that go to install zip from sd card and then choose from sd card. then navigate to your rom and flash it. After the flashing is done flash gapps and then reboot.
Note: To navigate in CWM use your volume keys and use the home button to select.
To enter Fastboot: Plug the usb cable side into the phone and while you are plugging it into the computer keep
your volume up key pressed.
To flash a kernel: Put the kernel you extracted from the zip into your fastboot folder. Then open a command
prompt in that particular directory ( in Windows 7 press shift in a blank place and right click).
Then enter this command fastboot flash boot boot.img(Your phone must be in fastboot
mode for this.)
In my signature, there's a guide how to install a custom rom/custom kernels, maybe this could help you!
I would use the cyanogenmod full update guide :good:
You don't need any ftf, you flash a custom rom with clockworkmod (cwm), but this should be explained in the guide

Thank you, you've cleared alot of things up for me.
I hope I'll get some time to try the whole thing out and write about it here.

Welcome.
Oh, before I get myselft into this, am I free of installing any drivers? Since I've installed some drivers for rooting purposes, I'm not sure if I need to install these drivers I've downloaded for CM9

No, just the fastboot drivers to flash the kernel. Go to flashtool installation folder > drivers and install all of them for all devices, that should be all :good:
Ran into a problem with ROM Manager :/ It's supposed to offer me recovery mode by rocking the volume up or down while device is rebooting, but none of these work (device boots normally).
Any idea on how to solve this?

I'm not sure about that... all I know is that my phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked.
So how and which custom kernel should I flash then?

It depends. If you wanna flash any CM or AOKP roms you have to flash thier respective kernels. If you want to flash any stock based roms you can flash any ICS or GB kernel you want like Mesa, Panic kernel etc.
As for how to flash a kernel refer to my post on the page before.

Ah, all these processes are confusing me so I apologize for forgetting about that! Reminded now.
So, to enter Clockwork recovery mode, my phone has to be connected to the PC with usb debugging on?

No. For entering the CWMR you have to press the volune down button when the bootup logo gets brighter. For this either you must have CWMR install or else you must have a custom kernel

That didn't work. When the Sony logo gets brighter, a blue LED lights up for that moment.
In cwm, selecting 'Flash ClockworkMod Recovery' opens up a box where my phone model is displayed. After that, it says it's unsupported and I can manually select either 2.x or 3.x+. I've selected the 3.x+ one and in the menu it says 'Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 5.X.X.X
Shall I try with 2.x? I have no clue here.
System setting>about phone
Mind telling us your kernel version? From there we would know your current kernel

Ehh... I´m a noob...
I tried to install Iced Bean 2.1 on my Sony Xperia Ray st18i (4.1.b.0.587)
I pressen on x-Parts and went to Recoverymode (by pressing Vol. Down + Home)
After I got into this mode ( which was new to me ) I pressed on every clear button and
went to advanced and formatted everything except my sd... kinda stupid i know
but I done this because I though it have to be to be a full wipe or smth like this.
Then I quitted the mode and tried to turn on the phone to go to ROM manager and
use the backup from Iced Bean 2.1 but then I checked I formatted the system *facepalm*
All I can do is now turn on and stare on the SONY logo.
Could you guys help me pls ?

flash stock sony firmware via flashtool...if you dont know how, there are several tutorials in this forum
or unlock your bootloader and flash a kernel with build in recovery like vds kernel for example. than you can install the backup of iced bean via that recovery and you cant wipe that recovery
You may want to flash your phone back to stock rom if you desire..
All you need is ftf and flashtool
you can download stock rom ftf here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36177572&postcount=1
then follow tutorial how to flash it here : http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/35239
that's it, hope it works

Flashing a different kernel is a good idea too, but you need an unlocked bootloader. Then you flash it in fastboot mode

Hello XDA buddies,
I need your help. I am having Xperia U on ginger bread(.188) which i wanted to upgrade on official ICS and afterward will try some custom roms. Before doing any updating i want to backup my stock rom in case any **** will happen i will be safe sided.I made searches about this and come to know that i have to unlock my bootloader and install custom recovery to backup my stock rom.
So here i am struggling:
1.I have unlock bootloader via sony official method but when iam trying to enter recovery mode by pressing volume key down(also tried volume key up) while my phone is restarting and sony logo appears nothing unusual happens and my phone starts normally.
2. To install CWM recovery i have to flash my SXU with some kernel(i really donn't know about this) and for flashing the kernel my phone must be on ICS. As i mentioned above before updating to ics i wanna backup my stock rom.
