[Q] insufficient ram/games lag on galaxy s3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys. im pretty new to this android thing im an ex iphone user.
i use this task-killer app to show me how much RAM i got left and it always
show something between 250-100 mb of ram left out of 1024.
when i try the Antutu Benchmark i only get a 6000 score when
i saw ppl get 11000+.
the GPU score is fine and the I\O is fine the RAM is way low then others and the CPU score is low too.
what may be causing this problem?
oh btw when i play games like NOVA 3 and Gangstar Rio it laggs as hell.
Ty.

No games should lag the S3.
Firstly what firmware are you on?

im on 4.0.4.
yea it seems wierd to see souch a powerfull device lags.
i guess it has something to do with this low benchmark score i get..

Ok I was after the exact firmware revision and if you were using a custom Rom or not. Once that is established may be able to help a little more.

You need to provide more info before any of us can help out. Provide which ROM & kernel you are using & if it's stock. do you freeze or uninstall bloatware? what apps do you have running or are there any running while the games are running?
Your total RAM is around 700ish since the OS uses the rest after that, so having 250 or lower is normal. I have yet to experience lag when running games like the ones you've listed & the only time I ever have experienced lag is when the home screen redraws.

oh i see, im sorry
amm i ain't using any custom rom. though i know that my rom got some changes to get it to fit to my country.
what do u mean by firmware revision other than 4.0.4?

Did you flash any custom kernels? Only stock kernel seems to run right with heavy 3D games (ie, NOVA3), custom kernels always lag, then crash and reboot on me.

This might be stupid, but where did you get your SGS3 at?
Honestly, Flash a stock ROM with Odin. I don't know if there are any one click master clear ones, but if you have the international there should have been any hacking needed to get it to work in your country.

Goto settings / about
Latest UK firmware ends lf2
Also check settings power savings and check cpu throttleing isn't on. Even with it on 6000 is real low. I hit 9000 with cup throttle on and my phone hasn't been rebooted in over a week.

i havn't flashed anything and i got it from a licensed Samsung seller in Israel.
the problem is i know they do some modification to get it to work right
with their langauge.
and they install their own rom.
i only download games and apps never to touch rom/root.
it's the international version with quad core.
when i compare the result's i get on the Antutu Benchmark it show
i have half the score on the ram and processors then i saw on Youtube.

Oh hell naw. XXALF2, flash that... NOW.

Never heard of an international phone not working in Israel without a modification. Personally I'd connect it up to kies and see if there's an update available.

Just thought I'd add that kies is the official Samsung application for updating your phone and won't break warranty etc.

lol mayble ill sound naive but won't i lose my warranty?
i remember when i first took the benchmark test when the phone was
just out of the box it showed me 11500.
now 2 weeks after it gone in half.
is there a way to root without lossing warranty cuz i know their rom is not
out on the market yet.
the phone will work in israel without the modification but it will have some bugs with the langauge

Yes and no. Odin uses the same update mechanism ('Download mode') as the official Samsung Kies (which btw is a grotesk, slow and painful-to-use application) so the phone won't be able to tell _WHAT_ updated it.
The phone is only capable of telling whether the ROM (=firmware) you're flashing is Samsung-official or some aftermarked custom ROM.
When it detects the ROM not to be official it will display a corresponding notice (and counter) in the Download mode. However there exists an app (which requires a rooted phone... which you usually got on custom roms) called 'Triangle Away' capable of resetting that counter to 0.
Now of course the store could still boot up the device and check if you're on the original ROM, so you'll have to flash a Samsung-official ROM corresponding to your location before bringing it back. There is no need to reset the counter afterwards since, as said, official ROM's don't trigger it to increment.
What if your phone is so damaged that you can't get it to go to download mode (more or less hardware-bricked)? Well in that case the store won't be able to check if the phone is (was) running non-official firmware. Samsung could but they don't always do since it requires dismantling the device and dumping the storage chip (provinding it still works). In case software caused it to brick (not boot) and it's unrecoverable, there are stores and send-in services around that for a couple of bucks revive your phone through JTAG flashing.

The reason for your scores dropping might have several causes.
Please install 'Task Manager' by 'Houmiak', reboot your phone and open the Task Manager. Then kill all processes of programs you've installed which might have autostarted. (Note that some auto-restart as soon as they're killed, so you can't really get rid of them). If there are a lot of such apps,
try installing 'Autorun Manager' by 'Andrs Studio'.
Then run the benchmark again; is it significantly higher? If so, the reason most probably is that your app(s) are causing the issue.

ty for the helpful reply.
i already use Task manager. ill try the other thing u said.
the wierd thing the benchmark isnt stable it can show me 6000 and on the next one it shows 8000.
UPDATE: it made it to 12000 once and i tried it again and it went below 10000

Another update:
It seems that the low score appears when the phone i hot like after
Playing a heavy game or after taking the antutu few times in a row.
Its getting lower and lower each test.
If someone please can try taking the test 4-5 time in a row
And publish the scores here ill be gratefull.
Then ill know for sure if my device is factory defected.

make sure you dont run the benchmark with the power saving mod on

Phone turns off itself

Hi. My phone often turns off since I flashed official Gingerbread (2.3.3) ROM.
When it turns off, I'm usually using it. Till now it never turned off at stand-by mode. Does anyone know, what causes this?
Other things:
1. When I played FIFA 10, the football field's textures weren't showing, but everything with field's players was fine.
2. When I ran Quadrant Advanced, at "3D Corridor" and "Planets" there were no textures. When I run the Standard version of this app, there are no problems.
Maybe gpu is cooked?
For starters, tune down your overclocking.
Ok, I'll try it and then I'll say, did it work or not.
You are probably going to seriously eff up your phone at that high overclock. It might even burn/damage the inside circuits if you're not in a really cold country.

I just clocked CPU to 245/710 MHz, I had 787 MHz max. But anyway, before I flashed official 2.3.3 ROM, there wasn't a problem like that.
EDIT: I installed NFS Shift game to see, how are the 3D graphics working. When I tried to enter this game, I couldn't get further than EA Games logo - the game powered down and I had brought to the homescreen.
I can't fix this issue by installing another ROM, right? ... It's related with hardware.
You can always brick ur phone and replace the hardware with warranty..

Yeah,LG replaces your PCB circuit in 1/2 days AFAIK so I would like to risk too and flash new baseband but I'm going away in about 4 days (@ the beach ) can't risk
Thank you, guys. I'll go to the shop where I bought this phone and will ask about warranty.
Thanks again.
UP!
So, I didn't repair my phone with warranty, I only flashed stock Froyo with KDZ updater and everything was solved.. but.. I still have this problem with ROMs that are based on official Gingerbread (also with official GB, that's not modified) and with CM7 by mik (only with build 6.6.1)..
Can someone try to play NFS Shift on official GB (or a ROM, based on it) and answer here - is it working or not.
(for me it crashes after EA logo)
well, I count it as a .35 kernel issue..
What do you think?
I've tried it a while back (when it was €0.99) on stock firmware and couldn't get any further either. Got a refund, so I can't retest it on the CM7/mik I'm running now, but it could very well be a general issue.

I see...
So, currently for me the best choice is mik's CM7 build6.5.7 (uses .32 kernels) + fk v18.
I leave that entirely up to you... I just want to protect you from trying different ROMs in search of one that is able to run NFS, when it may very well impossible

yeah, so ROMs that are based on froyo (or .32 kernel) are the most stable.
never got NFS Shift to work on 2.3.3 ROMs.
(actually I don't play this game, but with it I can see, how is the ROM working)
that's my conclusion.
btw, haven't your phone have the problem with automatic turning off in GB?
thank you for responsiveness.
Sorry, the only screen-turning-off phenomenon I see on CM7 is the one I see when I use Skype... hate that darn proximity sensor
As for stability... well, it could just mean that NFS works on a bug-assumption that has been fixed in the meantime. Wouldn't be the first time.

sry, but i didn't mean screen turning off - phone is turning off.. it just immediately turns off, but this happens only when I use it.
Ah! ... sorry, no idea aside from the usual: Do you overclock? Do you have a lot of applications on SD? Do you use a task killer that may be over-eager? Have you checked your memory stats?

too much oveclocking indeed..
yeah, the phone was overclocked always. at beginning @787 mhz, then 729,and after that 768
on sd I move applications only then if they are bigger than 10 Mb (sometimes I don't if there is enough free space in phone's memory).
don't use task killer anymore. I used it earlier, but understood that there's no point of this.
I don't check my memory stats, but do I have to?
You shouldn't have to ... but if the phone crashes then at least something isn't working like it's supposed to, meaning anything is possible. You can get your memory stats with cat /proc/meminfo .
Have you tried running the fix permissions function in ClockworkRecovery? It never worked with any of the issues I had, but it's worth a shot.

[Q] Running Hot - Any suggestions?

My first time posting here, so please be gentle.
I've had my SGS2 for around 6 months now, its an unlocked ASIA (as I live in BKK). I noticed on the original stock firmware that the phone was running hot, as in the back panel around the camera would heat up to the point I could feel it in my pocket. This would normally happen if I was using a game like angry birds, or a psx emulator. But sometimes it would happen in the browser under normal conditions. I just thought this may be a issue with dual core phones, so I took this as a 'feature' and accepted it.
But now lots of people I work with have this phone, and it came up in conversation about heat. Everyone stated they do not have this issue, that the phone remains cool all the time.
I have moved between many different ROMs, and have finally stuck with Westcrips ICS ROM. Then a strange thing happened, the heat issue goes away with version 8.4. Phone is cool all the time, even playing my PSX emulator in software mode. Battery also increased from 12 hours to 16-18 hours.
But now I just moved up to 9.3, and its back again, the front screen is very hot to touch when using things like the MX video player, or surfin the web. And if I launch a game ... well, forget about it. The battery drain is immense to, be lucky if I pull an hour of use like that.
Anyone else suffer from this? Hardware fault? I can't take it back because my flash counter is probably in the 20's now, and I can't find a reset JIG in Bangkok.
Cheers.
FYI, I always do a clean wipe, dalvik / cache / permissions.
same issued here, phone bought from Thailand also. Phone getting hot when browser, downloading and playing some games( not all). And its really hot
Changing Rom and kernel sometimes solved it for awhile but eventually will come back.
Looking for solution also
Thanks

Thanks for getting back to me.
The one I know that fixes it is Resurrection 8.4. Its a dam good rom, and given me the best battery life (once I got 20 hours with normal use). But there is an issue with touch screen sensitivity that makes it annoying.
Maybe its something to do with the Kernel on the Asian models?
If I find a fix I'll pm you.
Hmmm mine only gets uncomfortably hot when playing some 3d games. Didn't experience the same level of heat when just browsing though... It just gets a little warm but far from gaming temps.
What i did was undervolt and underclock when playing. It did reduce the heat and extend the battery though i admit it's not the best solution / workaround.

Well it looks like the ICS kernel is not supported right now under Tegrak. It is bleeding edge.
I tried setCPU to under clock but ended up with a lot of slow down and some full system freezes.
Guess its back to 8.4 until I find a more definitive answer.

Since you're using Westcrip's Resurrection Remix, you can get rid of the triangle by using Chainfire's TriangleAway app - I'm using Resurrection too and it got rid of the flash counter and the triangle.
TriangleAway should work on all ICS roms though.
Strange, installed triangle away yesterday evening. Work like a charm, so I guess if I need to return I can now.

[Q] My Atrix 4G is suddenly slooow (problem with database i/o,sd?)

Hi all! I'm an italian guy
I bought my Atrix a month ago in a bundle with the lapdock and the hd dock
Yesterday it suddenly gots this problem and now it seems to running very slow without an apparent reason
Some applications and games are running normally but download from the Play store is almost impossible and I have to wait some seconds when I unlock the screen or when I open some apps
Also the boot is slower then before
I've done a complete wipe but nothing changed
Then I tried to run Antutu test and I was surprised... ram, cpu and graphic scores are normal but the Database IO results is only 5!! Also the writing/reading speed is very slow
What can I do? Could it be an hardware issue? I don't want to return the phone again (I returned the first one because of the "bad update" brick...
Many thanks!!!

thank you but i don't think the problem is the ram or the sd card

no one has an idea?
when i opened the post my phone was stock locked but rooted on 2.3.4
now i unlocked the bootloader and i'm running the topogigi 1.1 rom but the situation is still the same...
is there any app for the phone or the pc to test the atrix and find hardware issues?
thanks again!
had similar issue. ran the zip. runs like a charm.

my antutu scores are back up to around 7000. less lag in app drawer and opening /closing certain app. its back to silky smooth yeehaw.
i ran pds fix but nothing changed... still very slow on boot, still "lag" when i unlock the phone, still impossible to download anything from the market/play store and slow when opening apps etc... do i have to start study how to return the phone locked and stock and return it?

Having a similar issue. 2.3.4 and my write speeds are .5MB/s and my read speeds are like 21MB/s. My free space is 4GB+ and i have no external SD. This just happened a few months ago, I thought it was normal until I tested my write speed and found it to be atrocious. I've tried changing schedulers with no change. Market updates take FOREVER and freeze my ENTIRE phone for about 20seconds to 1minute depending on the size of the update. My normal apps freeze when opening and/or saving. Any ideas??
Motorola Atrix MB860 2.3.4
Update: Tried PDSFIX, no change.
I've done a bunch of research and a lot of other users with newer phones are having this issue too:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=37258
I still haven't found a solution. I can't use mount -o remount, discard as discard is not an option with mount on Android 2.3.4, apparently. Any ideas? Or should I just throw my phone out the window? :crying:
Some people say it's due to no TRIM being activated. I found a fstrim for linux but it's a .c source and I'm unsure how to compile without downloading an app from the market for $3! I'm not sure why randomly it decided to kill my write speed. I've even tried an app to fill up free space and delete it, but nothing is working.

I understand that it's for a newer version of android. All my searching has lead me nowhere with my problem of insanely low write speed :|
SEQ RD: 16.65MB/s
SEQ WR: 0.36MB/s
RND RD: 1123 IOPS
RND WR: 33 IOPS

Kind of saddening. I should maybe just buy a new phone... Motorola seems to have given up on it, as seems to be the norm after a year. I don't really like everything being designed to break in a few years but whatever, good revenue stream for them :silly:

[Q] Q: Whats up with the ram

Hi Guys,
I am on ICS 4.0.4 and my S3 shows 779 MB, which is always busied by 680 or so!!!
I checked an S2 with ICS 4.0.4 and the memory is 830, and is busied by 450 on average. (S2 has larger memory than S3 on ICS4.0.4???)
So what is wrong with the S3 memory? i keep on killing apps all day and night to bring it to 450 or around, I dont have too many programs, and, i am not using except two widgets, checking on the background processes annd programs, most of the system's stuff is running on its own, even if i freeze some using Titanium pro.
Anyone has the same problem (if i can call it a problem?!) is that normal??!
Why would you consider it as a problem? Android is best at multitasking. You don't have to kill apps, its the nature of the beast so to speak to have a semblance of the apps running in the background for your convenience.
Sent from my GT-P3113 using XDA Premium HD app
Bigger screen and stuff like Smart stay and S voice eat up extra Ram.
Yeah it's really dumb to kill apps and clear ram the whole time, phone will feel sluggish because it needs to fore up stuff all the time that would normally sit kindly and wait for you in ram... You are making your phone slow and killing your battery
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Okay, i got it, No more killing APPS , now the question is, how come the S2 has more overall ram than the super S3, on ICS4.0.4??? considering the 779MB to the 830? its just a noob question

Try reading the rules before posting. Rule number 1 is search before asking a question. Now you're asking the difference between odexed and deodexed... Do you seriously think you're the only person who has asked this? It's discussed EVERYWHERE!

Thanks for the tip, im kinda new here, i am trying my best to read on before getting bullied by someone like up there but, eh, still not doing it right.
Anyways, i found two posts, one about a stock ALF2, and the other talking about deoxed and oxed .
What is the difference between :

Deodexed ROMs have their .apk's (which are basically the application packages) repackaged in a certain way. An "odex" can be thought of as a collection of parts of applications that have been pulled out and optimized before booting. This speeds up the boot process - in a way, it preloads part of the applications - but it also makes hacking those apps difficult because part of the original code is already extracted somewhere else.
Deodexing is just a process of putting those pieces back into the original applications. It takes a while to extract those parts and build the .dex cache (aka Dalvik cache), but only because the relevant parts aren't in an easy-to-access place for the system. The advantage of this is that an app can be modified effectively and the developer doesn't have to worry about conflicts from the separate odex part of the code.
So, short version: "Deodexed" ROMs have all their apps put back together. If an app can be themed, for example, a deodexed version of that app will not get messed up when the modified .apk tries to mesh with the odex of the original un-modified .apk. Because it's not there.
If you want an aftermarket theme, you need a deodexed ROM. I'm not sure if deodexing can be done to individual apps within a non-deodexed ROM.
The search on the site is horrible. I use Google and type xda after anything I'm looking for

Yeah it's really dumb to kill apps and clear ram the whole time, phone will feel sluggish because it needs to fore up stuff all the time that would normally sit kindly and wait for you in ram... You are making your phone slow and killing your battery

I suppose "standard ROMS" have no apps or anything in the "Dalvik cache" ? (as all apps have "stand-alone" APK's ?) ... correct ?
well, I guess its widely know how android manages memory, and clearing ram is more of a performance inhibitor than a booster. I gave up all hope when I took my s3 to the service center and was given the solution of clearing the RAM repeatedly to solve the horrible ram issue.
the problem i was and still am facing is, the ram usage increases automatically within few hours of usage with hardly any apps installed. its extreme as it crosses 790mb and stays in that range. whats bad is apps keep on restarting in the background, phone slows down terribly ( switching between apps, moving out of an app just to stare at the app drawer 3-4 secs for all the apps to load, even the keyboard takes time to pop up). So moderate ram usage is good, but high ram usage is bad especially when it causes to slow down basic use. now what problem i am left with is deciding whether to root and flash a custom ROM and void the warranty on my one month old device, as both the times i revisited the service center the only thing the guy did was format and reload the firmware, which didn't solve anything. this was prevalent on stock ICS as well after the JB update via kies. as a last resort I am thinking of trying an official firmware from another region. as Indian one was causing the issue. my friend got his s3 from saudi and he hasnt had such severe problem(certain sluggishness is acceptable on a bloated stock firmware). so i am thinking of flashing that firmware. is it safe to do that? and i wouldnt need root access for that right, only odin and the firmware correct?

Generally RAM usage depends a lot on running widgets.
I personally use only one widget on screen at all times. (Google search) which is enough to get the job done for anything. And I run only 3 home screens
I would usually have about 200 free ram
Also Im on Omega 34 rom which is by far best (In my opinion for RAM management). It automates in such a way that 200mb ram is free at all times.
I really dont care much about warranty ,the first thing I do when I get an android device is to root it. (You do know you can unroot right ?)
So if RAM is really so important to you its best to root.

yes I am well aware of rooting/un-rooting and other basics, had done all that on my S2(i9100), also found it more fun and efficient than stock but time is the only factor that's stopping me from experimenting. and thanks for the omega tip. I am certainly going to flash a custom ROM, after trying out few official ones, When I do, I would definitely go for Omega, alot of people recommending that one.
Omega is good as is WanamLite, Foxhound and Hyperlight. Smoothest I've used were Foxhound and Omega although I'm running WanamLite at the moment. Smoothest version I've used.

(SOLVED) ZU heating after 4.3 update

If anyone is experiencing this problem, I hope the following steps may help.
I would like to express my appreciation to XDA members, who have commended and helped out with this. Credits go to @LordManhattan and @abuihsan . Many thanks for your help.
1/ Do a re-flash: I always thought my device was a c6802, after I flashed c6833, it helped.
2/ Do a factory reset/ Cache wipe/ Dalvik Wipe/ in recovery or in the phone settings.
3/ Install SD-Maid and clean the mess from the programs, also take a look at APPCONTROL to see which is running. You can freeze it here.
4/ Install Performance control to Underclock your CPU. Believe me, 1.7Ghz is far too enough for all the tasks you need.
5/ Use more pwerful tool, like Titanium Backup to stop all the backgound-running apps. You just need to leave the one which were in GREEN color.
6/ Use Wakelock Detector to see which apps get your phone out of deepsleep. Mostly they are Facebook and Messenger. My advice: Disable Facebook notice and if you don't use chat quite often, don't install facebook messenger.
Hope these help.
Personally I had tried a lot of methods, including checking the processes and re-insert the memory card but no such helps. Therefore, if you need any advice or any comments, feel free to send me an PM or reply here, I will gladly help you out, like what the community had helped me our of my situation.
Hi everyone,
Recently I just bought a ZU from a local vendor here. It runs 4.2.2 with no problem. However, I want to get rid of the *new system update* and I also want to use the xperia Themes, I decided to upgrade to 4.3.
My phone model is C6802, and I chose the file here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2453921
The upgrade went through fast and smooth, as I had experienced in many Sony devices.
However, after getting to 4.3, I had noticed some problems as follow:
+ Heat: Device heats up very fast, even left alone. Just imagine you have the phone on 100% battery lying on your table, a moment later it heats up and the battery drops dramatically.
+ Battery drop: Just as mentioned above, the battery drops quickly. I do not expect extreme battery life on this device, but since 4.3, it is too low, I can barely make it to 6 hours without doing anything consuming battery.
+ Process: When checking the battery, I notice that most of the process that takes up battery is Android OS, which nearly 50-60%. I use the phone frequently to answer SMS and call, sometimes play games. I think that the most used applications should be the bad-ass screen?
I am running on the 14.2.A.0.290 with R4B.
Anyone had experienced this problem before, or know a solution to fix? Will clearing the Dalvik Cache help? I had re-flash several times but the problem is still there.
Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like somethings has gone wrong in the update process.
Have you tried backing up all your data and doing a factory reset?
I do not think clearing Dalvik will help you here, sounds like something else is acting up. You could try to install one of the apps designed to detect what is causing the wakelock.
I'm not at my Android tablet at the moment, but I think I used this when I had this problems myself on my Galaxy Note: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector

First of all, thanks for your reply and suggestion.
I had tried to flash the roms multiple times, but the problem still exists. Furthermore, I even flash back to 4.2.2 and the problem is still there. The phone heats up slowly and battery runs out pretty fast.
I had installed the Wakelock Detector on my device and I will update the situation tomorrow, I will leave it there for a night and see the status tomorrow.
Did you wipe after updating? I had the same issue when i updated to 4.3.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as he's been downgraded to 4.2.2 again, he'd have to wipe. At least that is how it was on my Xperia Z.
-KJ
this might not be related, but I've been noticing much worse battery life today than normal! i normally only drop about 50% in 24 hours, but today I've dropped 30% in just a few hours. Android OS seems to be doing it...
no real heat issue tho, maybe slightly warmer from whatever the OS is doing, but nothing too major. running stock rooted 4.3
had that on my Xperia Z on a 4.1 or 4.2 build (dunno which one). Sounds strange, but simply turning off the sync fixed the problem, give it a try .
Hope it also helps on your XZU.

At first I did not choose to wipe Data in Flashtool, then I flashed again, this time I checked everything.
the problem still exists.
UPDATE:
Yesterday after working hours, I had rooted and installed BetterBatteryStats, Performance Control to monitor the system. I also had WaveLockDetector and Titanium Backup installed.
It appeared that the CPU runs all the time, in the highest state (2.15 Ghz), the phone never goes to DeepSleep and Awake all the time.
On Performance control, I had underclocked the CPU to 1.5Ghz and the temperature seems to be cooler.
I had tried to freeze a lot of applications via Titanium backup but so such luck.
Still researching.
However, many thanks to your kind replies. At least I know that I'm not alone with this problem :good:

hey, thanks for your reply. I did the same to you, even with Titanium backup to ensure this will never shows up again, but CPU keeps throtlling at 100%. I still can not find an answer to this 100% thing. now the phone is quite hot in my pocket, I decided to put in my bag and even turn off to keep it from heating.
I will try another rom and update.

do you use any cleaner/task killer app? before trying other rom or update, maybe you need to uninstall it, reboot recovery and wipe cache and see the result.
I don't know if this is relevance but while using greenify I also uninstall the previous cleaner app and replace with another one that I think is better.
now my c6833 has great deep sleep.

Would you please give me the name of the cleaner apps that you think are way better?
Are you running on 4.3 stock or on some modified roms?

The thing is, you don't need a task killer/cleaner app. It was useful way back on Android 2.1/2.3, but you shouldn't use it at all on 4.0+. You're actually making things worse.
mine has been heating up as well. the battery isn't draining like how yours is, but any kind of use will heat the top back side of the phone. I checked and after killing all apps, my cpu load was still around 65%. is that normal? no custom flash here. locked bootloader. updated through pcc normally. I'd imagine this is why 4.3 isn't running as buttery smooth like everyone else.

No, that's not normal. Mine's around 20-30 degress celsius (depending on what i'm doing). Even streaming 1080p videos shouldn't make it hot or even mildly hot. When i had the heating problem, two cores would always be stuck at 2150 MHz. Now one core is active at 960 MHz when the screen is on. CPU load is around 20 and 60% (single core). Temperature is currently at 26 degrees. Also, stop killing apps and processes. Most of them are set to start automatically, so when you kill them over and over again, they'll start again and they'll use even more battery. Android is built to manage resources very well on its own, and it's not operating like Windows or any other computer OS. Just leave it alone unless something has gone rouge and you don't have a choice.
I'm on stock 290, rooted and extremely debloated.
- Current battery level: 88%
- Current uptime: 3 h 30 min
- Current screentime: 1 hour (browsing etc.)

hmm... yea that sounds like the problem i am having. im noticing two cores stuck at 2150mhz with a third kicking in here and there. how were you able to fix it? just a fresh install of .290?
so as far as the apps go, i have Du Battery Saver installed and the "optimize" button is supposed to clear up some of the background junk. are you saying that i should leave the optimize button alone and just let android figure itself out?

What i'm saying is that you should uninstall that crappy app. Task killers were useful three years ago when Android devices had slow processors and low amount of RAM. What you're doing now is killing everything everytime you tap that button. WHY do you want to do that? What's the point of having 2GB of RAM when you don't want to use it? Are you always killing processes on your computer too? Would you do it if your computer had 32GB of RAM with 30GB available? Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Android is a modern OS that can handle this on its own. If you only have 300MB RAM left and you want to play Asphalt 8 which requires (i'm guessing) 500MB RAM, Android will find the oldest and less frequently used process and kill it. It's that easy.
You can read more about it here and here.

ok. so I haven't done anything at all to remedy the situation. I figured I'd ask about it before messing it up myself. I upgraded to .290 via pcc. it updated fine with no errors. once it was done updating, it was hot and battery was diminished. I had seen on another thread that most people had that happened so I didn't see it as an issue, just a side effect of the update process.
I have been checking back to see if anyone was having heating issues with 4.3 after the update and didn't hear about it until I had seen this thread. the OP stated he flashed .290 on his 6802 and is rooted. I am not, so I wasn't sure if the steps he was taking were the same given my 6833 being completely stock.
