LENOVA Appstore for Nook Color
Hello again everyone! I havent updated or posted anything new in a while so I thought I might go back and work on some old ideas that I never completed.
I recently was able to aquire the .apk of the Lenova appstore for their Android and Thinkpad tablets. I modified a couple of it's device scan scripts so it will not check your device. The applications download in a .apk format and are automatically deleted after installation. All the applications I have tried work flawlessly and resize to fit the 7" Display.
The only thing for you to do is download the attached .apk and transfer it to your device, install, and enjoy! You will also need to create a Lenova account when you enter the appstore.
Hope you guys enjoy!
It's fantastic, thanks man.
Can someone explain the benefits from having this? What extra does this offer?
Produced by NookColor at ICS 4.0.4
Having the Lenova appstore is just like having a Google Play alternitive, with one exception. It is made for the Lenova tablets and thinkpads so it has very tablet oriented applications. It also has a fully available apps and not a compatibility check of your device so there is a much broader selection. Let me know if you want any more information or anything else.
Thanks can't wait to test this out!

I just purchased one of these units as a color eReader with WiFi, 800 x 600, touch screen.
Turning it on I was expecting typical eReader app., but instead there was a full blown Android (missing market though). The eReader is just a Kodo App.
Android 1.5 Cupcake, 500mhz, 2 gig flash, SD
This is the Canadian version, the US version indeed presents you with a eReader App as the Home screen, but does have the Android menu.
Flashes are available for both Canada and US.
The Canadian version has ES File Explorer so adding apps. isn't hard, but the US version Needs Android SDK to get an App installed. It appears I can switch to root in a terminal.
I'm having some issuse with networking though. It surfs no problem and can download. But an RDP client connects through a local network, but can't connect through the Internet, just resets the connection. Also it can't even download an ebook from Kobo,, just does a 1.8k download, reset, 1.8 download, reset and so on. Pretty bad you can't even use it for what it was meant. The US version appears to download books from Barnes & Noble, but it's to difficult to try it with RDP.
I'm looking at trying to update to a newer Android for it and could use some pointers.
Go to the Pandigital site, go to download and scroll to the bottom, you will see where you can get the update to a tablet rather than a reader.
Couple of cautions though...it voids your warranty, you will lose the PDN's original launcher screen, and mine anyway updated to Eclair.
But I did it any way and have been able to load pretty much anything, however I can't get angry birds to work.
You must have the white Pandigital Novel. I believe it has Eclair builtin, and just butcher it with a Barnes & Nobel home/launcher. Upgrading to the OP flash gives you a normal home/launcher and the ability to add apps. Have you got Market running on it?
The black novel has similar hardware but less ram. It has Cupcake builtin and a butcher home/launcher. Upgrading to OP, still just gives you Cupcake. I have Market running on it, but need the ugly hack to get it registered.
heard anything about the 9" one from QVC?
From the picture it looks like its running the OP Platforum, with a B&N app as the Ereader. Specs. would say it needs at least Donut, but my Kobo app. on the Canadian version requires donut too, but they managed the run it on cupcake.
I like the 6" screen for reading, but a 9" tablet with the right aspect 4:3 would be awesome. I have a 10" zt180, but its a 16:9 or worse and looks long and skinny. Really messes up icon spacing when you swith portrait to landscape.
I think 16/9 is a great size for the multimedia aspect in landscape and the reader will be great in portrait. Just my opinion though. To each his own.

Iv'e been working on this machine for a while,I upgraded to the SH20 firmware/open platform,I had eclair andriod on it and could flash firmwares with gapps and market. Now I can't find that flash file anywhere,I been using digtal reader files to root it,but can't get past that now,I have the white 7'in one,[email protected] does not help...Can this xda site help this tablet??? I would really like to see this go into development with this site,I know it's a ****ty tab, but. It's a andriod thou...As of now my Pandigtal novel is..SH20_20110302_K_PD_IN7E_ENG_6410POP firmware,Kernel 2.6.29,Build PD_Novel 2011.03.02 ...ANY INFO,FILES,ROM'S,ETC...Would be grateful...I awlays relyed on xda to fix, flash, read wiki, and mod my EVO 4G phone,I just don't like slat#driod...People there tell yu to read the wiki,ok i do,but still. People here on xda atually help yu..slate don't..I think is would be a intresting tab to work on...Cheapest thing on the sales floor,Just don't drop it..It has a glass screen in it if yu have one,....Anybody with issues, files, roms,Just pm me if yu want to,I want to get this tab off the ground...It's not junk, just needs work,
Wpdn devel is mostly on slatedroid. Read the wiki
Avoid bricking by first downgrading to s10, then flash froyo. Or stick with s20 kewlguys. Randomblame has some roms but theyre still alpha

UPDATE!
As B&N closed operations, PanDigital has issued a free update utility which updates the firmware from what comes stock to an OPEN Android platform. Here is the link for the 7" support page:

I am using Nook Color to load apk files. I wanted to get the WSJ Android tablet app, http://online.wsj.com/public/page/tablet.html?mod=WSJ_footer.
It is a free app but I do not have Market access. could someone upload the apk file for the WSJ Android tablet app?
I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
i am not seeing that app available on market.
Someone with a Samsung galaxy tablet would see it only. i tried one at a verizon store. Same goes for nytimes tablet app
I see 2 WSJ apps on my galaxy S phone... but people are saying its just a "Short cut" i doubt thats what you're looking for
I'm not sure if this one is the one you are looking for:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9641665/stacktrace.android.news.wsj.lite_1.apk
Only someone with Galaxy Tab can see the Android Tablet app. It would be the official WSJ app (not the app lite) version. Thanks all for your effort so far. The app can only be seen with Galaxy Tab or other official Android tablet.
We should get more Galaxy Tab apps for the NC.
masking
Is there an app like the eris market fix that could mask your phone temporarily of course as a gtab? I would love hte NYT tablet version (though I am sure both will probably come out next year in the BN app store.

NYTimes Tablet app is on the market, I just downloaded it
Nice!
That's great. Do you mind posting the nytimes app? I cannot access it on my Eris.
I'd really like this as well, and the NY Times tablet app!
also want WSJ android tablet app
does anybody have the WSJ (official) apk or know how to make our Nook's Market app think that we are using a tablet rather than a phone? The WSJ app only shows up for tablets.
Thanks all.
WSJ app only works on Samsung Tab
Wall Street Reader (lite) is only limited access; WSR (full) is available for purchase but then you also need the WSJ online paid subscription as well.
On Nook Color of you go here http://mobile2.wsj.com/device/index.php you get the mobile lay out. It doesn't look like the iPad app interface due to the B&N wsj offering but its pretty good.
Note: you must set the browser to "mobile" mode vs. "desktop" in setting for it to work appropriately. Otherwise, in desktop mode, it sends you to the main WSJ page.
Enjoy.
Cheers m8s!
edit: NYTimes app works great outta the box.
Official WSJ app
I am speaking about the Official WSJ app (not from Stacktrace as you mentioned in your post).
The official WSJ app is at https://market.android.com/details?id=wsj.reader_1
The app is free and does require a subscription to get the full content.

Looks like it requires Froyo...could that be the reason you don't see it? Also comments on this link claim logins are still required. Haven't tried it myself.

WSJ apk works on CM7!!!
I've spend that last 2 morning reading the WSJ on CM7 using the official WSJ apk. It looks amazing!
WSJ
How did you get the WSJ to register your email on the nook color? I have downloaded the ap (the tablet app - same UI as on the IPAD). Its a great UI but unfortunately on the NC I cant get past the registration page.

It shows up on mine. I've changed a number of things in my /system/build.prop. Since this app shows up for the Galaxy Tab, I don't think it's related to any of the Honeycomb preview changes. I suspect the following change will do it.
Change the line:
ro.build.characteristics=default
to:
ro.build.characteristics=tablet
If you don't have that line, add it after the ro.build.fingerprint=BLAHBLAHBLAH line on your device.
Good luck. You may have to clear your Market cache and the data for Google Services Framework and reboot afterwards.
EDIT:
Nevermind, tried on my Nexus One just adding that one line, and it wasn't enough. Looks like you'll have to spoof being a Galaxy Tab or a Xoom in addition.
I simply downloaded it from the website listed 4 posts up, from my nookcolor in DolphinHD, by clicking on the "Download app" button, which forced me to sign into my google account from there. I also needed to create a (free) user account, verify it via the sent email, and voila.. working WSJ app.
Thanks!
Hey guys, I am about to follow the root instructions found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354487
But before I do it I want to know what features could/will be lost in doing this. Obviously the auto-update (which makes complete sense). But in general I like the interface for now. It has its drawbacks, but I like the built-in mail client and the browser is fine for the most part. In the future I might also want to try ICS on it, but for now I am happy to use the built-in interface.
I really just want to root so that I can side load apps so that I don't have to pay B&N for apps that are otherwise free on the Android Market. That and I have never been a fan of auto-updates. But I want to keep the mail client and I especially want to keep the ability to read their entire digital catalog for free while I am in a B&N store.
Hell I would like to take that a step further and get it to work outside the store if possible. But I would settle for just keeping the original feature. I tried it earlier today and I love that feature.
So I would like to know if I would lose any of those features when I root this device. Does anyone know?
Thanks,
Patrick
When you Root you can still use the stock Nook "Home" launcher. You can install a second launcher and switch between the 2 on the fly so that you have "Nook Mode" and Tablet Mode".
2 warnings:
1) when I rooted and added Gapps, something broke the stock email client and I was not able to find a quick way to fix it.
2) I have not found a way to get Android Market or side loaded apps to show up int he stock Nook "library" so they can only be accessed via the "search" function or my using an Android Launcher with a normal app drawer.
I use the Nook Color App Manager to add sideloaded apps to the stock Nook home screen and/or library. It works great.
There is a detailed artile at liliputing....Do a Google search for: "How to add sideloaded apps to your NOOK Tablet home screen, app library" As a new member I can not post a direct link. Sorry.

Hey guys it looks like the read in store ability works just fine still. I got this device rooted last night. Now iwant to see if this ability can be retained somehow while upgrading to ICS. It would also rock to be able to access the in store readable items from any wiring connection.
Thanks for the help!

Hello all,
This might be a crazy question. I have the following:
Asus Transformer Prime
Galaxy Nexus
I was wondering if there is a sych program for android devices, where as on Wifi, or using digital dropbox, if I install something on my Prime, or cell phone, the OS could be mirrored to the other device cuing an automatic install from the Google Play Store. Essentially, I'm looking for an app that would mirror the installations on my Galaxy Nexus to my Transformer Prime, so each devices looks the same in the OS, and has the same programs. I'm looking for an app that will help me avoid the Data entry redendency for both themes, and apps.
Would I use a theme creator to match the look and feel for both devices? What could I use to mirror the apps and new files I create?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi Dave,
There's DataSync, which I use to sync application data between my Prime and my Galaxy Nexus.
I'm not sure if it only syncs application data or if it does also have the ability to share the .apk between devices, so you'll need to look into that. It does have the ability to sync files and folders though, so maybe you could sync the folder that contains all your theme files?
The good thing is, DataSync has a free version and a paid version with a few more features; you can try it out without worrying about the 15 minute refund window. There are other applications like Titanium MediaSync but I like the fact DataSync follows the Android 4.0 design guidelines and has specific UIs for both phone and tablet.
Unfortunately, you do need to be rooted in order to use DataSync but pretty much all syncing applications will require root in order for them to access other application's data.
Cheers,
Mark
I'm trying to install the tablet version of the NCCN Guidelines app onto my unrooted Kindle Fire HD, but the Play market will not let me download it via my phone (not compatible), and I can't get the APK to download via any 'Play market to PC' type chrome extensions (tried 2 different ones) or via similar 'download from Play market' websites (all just say ERROR: Cannot download this app) and I cannot find the APK elsewhere online.
I was hoping someone with a rooted tablet and a few spare minutes could download/install the app and upload the APK via dropbox or something of the sort, or could suggest another way to go about doing it! (Besides rooting my Kindle!) I would really appreciate it, thank you!!
Here is the market link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tipmedcom.nccn.guidelines
It is a free app which provides clinical guidelines for the treatment and management of cancers, and as a pharmacy student, I would really like to have it! Thank you!
Does anyone know a way I could bypass the market restrictions on my phone and download the app?
Figured it out! Market helper is the best. In case anyone else wants the APK...
