Battery and ambient temperature - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Im going Mtn biking tomorrow, and im not sure what to do with my phone. These batteries dont like extreme heat or cold. If I leave it in the car for three hours, it will easily get above 100F inside, but if I take it with me, one wipe out and the phone is finished.
Any ideas on keeping it cool while in the car?

put it in a ziplock bag and then put all that in a ziplock bag. repeat that about like 8 more times and then put that in a tuperwear bowl with a lid to be sure and put it in a cooler with water. thats the only thing i can thing of if your car gets that hot haha
edit: also have you considered maybe getting a thick case so that you can keep it with you? the otterbox defender should be good or even the ballistic sg maxx when it comes out

The Tupperware idea sounds interesting since I am bringing a cooler anyway.
As strong as any Otterbox is, i dont think it would help if I fell off my bike and landed on my phone.

hope it works for ya! haha
and idk about otterboxes but i had a ballistic hc case for my og evo and that thing was literally indestructible. i played football and other stupid stuff with my friends and it held up but i also decided to show my physics teacher and we were talking about it and he said what would happen if you whiped it at a wall. so without saying anything i took it back whipped at a wall pretty damn hard and watched him sit there with his jaw dropped for a minute. evo remained unharmed the next week he had one for his i phone haha. so i wouldn't completely get the thought of a case out of your head haha
edit: btw if your doing the cooler thing make sure to put a rag or something in the bottom of the tupperwear to rest your evo on because im sure that battery will get screwed if you decide to freeze that with almost direct contact with the ice haha

If you car has windows (most do) or a sun roof (some do) you could open them a little bit about an inch or 2 and that would keep ur car cooler

Personally, I'd just wrap it in a towel and stash it under a seat or somewhere that it won't get a bunch of direct sunlight. You don't need to keep it ice-cold, just closer to room temp than the 100+ degrees that it might get to otherwise. A towel should provide adequate insulation for that purpose.

Anyone dropped theirs or close calls yet?

I have been showing mine off at the office and all the time someone is holding it, especially one handed, I just cringe. My two year old likes to hold it herself while she plays the games I downloaded for her so we are always sitting and I have a pillow on her lap to rest it on. Man! I can't wait for decent cases to become available for this thing.
I hold this thing like a baby when someone else holda it I stand there and watch them carefully I'm not letting this thing hit the ground
I'm looking to get a good case asap also. I had 2 close calls. one time it almost slipped holding it one handed. althoughi love the look of the aluminum back, it is very slippery. I usually try to always hold it with 2 hands. this thing is light as a feather compared to my ipad1 but being slippery makes me Leery of one hand use till I get a case.
had another major scare when my 16 month old daughter took the thick, heavy Comcast cable remote and banged it pretty hard against the screen. you know how lil kids like to bang things in their hand up n down. I was like WoooooooA! so glad this thing has gorilla glass. no scratches or anything from that. I think because its so thin and flat, its pretty much baby proof if they bang on screen with their hands/palms. my Ipad held up to alot of abuse also and I kept it mostly in the official apple case. I have the targus truss case also that I mostly use when traveling. it provides maximum protection but adds alot of bulk/ thickness. my Ipad survived daughter constantly banging on it, drops flat on the screen on hard surface, and drops on the corner of it on hard surface. it survived it all with no screen cracks or scratches on screen. I'm pretty confident the prime can even hold up to more abuse. I don't even think ipad1 had gorilla glass. I am looking for a good case though. I saw a nice one in accessories section of a leather one at amazon. its on sale for like only $11. there's a thread or link to it in that section of prime forum. I forgot the name of it case. looks good.

Yea, I know what you mean. When people are asking me questions about it I can tell that they are looking at me. But all along I am looking at it making sure it doesn't slip from their hands.

My screens already lose so I need a replacement I'm scared if I drop it screen might become worse
I haven't dropped mine yet, but I took mine to work one day. My boss was talking about how she wants to buy the Ipad 3. I showed her mine and she asked to see it so I gave it to her. After looking at it, she sat it on the desk and the spun it so she could at it in landscape mode. I cringed when she did it but figured it would be fine because of the aluminum backing.
Come to find out yesterday when I looked at the back, there are about 4 small scuffs, two on each side of the logo, which I deducted probably came from my boss turning it around on the desk :'(. I guess the back isn't as tough as I thought. Luckily, I had already called game top 2 days after I bought it asking for an exchange because of screen issues. I just hope the replacement has the same build quality and screen as this one. Compared to my original transformer, the whites looked much more true on the Prime.
Dropped mine, but only from a 2 feet or so, but I tried to soften the blow with my toe. It cut it instead, haha, IT TASTED BLOOD. Anyway, careful, edges are quite sharp when falling ^_^
I did today, and look what happened

In my IT Shop that is called the "Technical Tap". Quite useful in some situations though it should be performed by a qualified technician!

I do that all the time to TF101 and the plastic has no scratch. Why Asus had to changed the back to aluminium? It causes only problems...

phone into the sink, still hope!

so i just dropped my evo in the sink in less than an inch of water for just about a second, and i stripped in completely. the internals dont seem to be damage or wet and the phone is still in working condition. there is a tad bit of flickering in the screen. i have in buried in rice right now, what do you think the chances of that flickering going away? im assuming it just needs to dry up a little. what do you guys think?
Might work for a little while, but probably won't be long term. Do you have TEP?
Sorry to hear that dude. I'm sure you'll be ok if ya give the rice enough time to do its thing. I think I saw a video that they also put the water damaged device in the freezer with the bag of rice... Might help you.
i have geek squad black tie protection through bestbuy so ill be alright. but im rooted and dont want to deal with rooting with the whole hboot ****. it seems complicate im gonna let it sit over night and see how it goes
Be sure that the battery is out and don't try turning it back on until you're positive it's 100% dry.

Freezer??? It will freeze the liquid inside and it will melt once he uses the phone again. Toss it in a bag of rice at room temperature for about 48 hours.

Yup. The rice has to absorb the liquid. Its like sucking through a straw very slowly.
You don't wanna take any chances.

When you say the screen was flickering, I assume that means you tried to turn it on after it was dropped in the water? If so, you probably fried something on the board. I would say 75% of the time, if a phone is exposed to water and you immediately remove the battery, and let it dry for at least a few days, the phone will work again. The problem is, people drop it in water, and then try to turn it on when the board is still wet, which shorts out chips on the board. If people would just let the phone completely dry out, without trying to turn it on, it will usually be fine.
didnt read through every post but i've dropped my original one twice in water and immediately tore everything apart and burried it in a tupperware container full of rice then put in the freezer for 24 hours.
I spilled beer on my logitech harmony remote(best remotes ever)....It stopped working. Did the same thing. Back to life.
no damage to screens or anything. It is a trick for faulty memory cards in photography too.
When I dropped my og flip razr in the toilet like 5 years ago the freezer actually fixed it haha. But rice is probably your best bet

I use a spray called "corrosion-x" believe it or not I completely soak any hand held type electronics in the stuff. It works so well at repelling water that I soak my ipod shuffles in it and can use them IN the pool while lap swimming. If you get a can ... Boat supply stores usually have it, and spray the phone liberally it will dispace the water and might get you up and running. Of course rice and baggies work good too.
So I know this sounds extreme but read up on corrosion x before flaming me and give it a try on an old ipod or something. Its really great water protection.

the other day I dropped my evo in a big tube(about 4in deep) of antifreeze coolant at work. I stripped it, blew it dry with my air noozle, let it dry out for about 2 hours then reassembled.. Has been working flawless ever since.
& this is not the first phone Ive done this with.. Ive drowned a Nextel i730, i880, samsung instinct, evo 4g, & now my evo 3d.. all have survived. never had to reture over issues caused by water damage
Washed the girlfriends daughter's phone in the laundry. Phone (non Evo 3D) was sitting at the bottom of the drum when I took the clothes out. Put the phone in a zip lock bag with enough uncooked rice to cover it plus about twice as much as that. Two days later it was working. DIDN'T TURN IT ON FOR THE TWO DAYS!
Freezing it doesn't make any sense? The water will be frozen but once it thaws out will still be in the phone Even worst ice expands and could actually do physical damage.
Heard of using 100% (or close to it) alcohol. That displaces the water and the alcohol will evaporate almost instantly...

Antifreeze sucks on phones. I hate getting any oil based fluid on my phone worst is when your hands are covered in grease some trans fluid and antifreeze and it falls outta your pocket while your underneath something.
Best way to dry a phone that was soaked in water snap the battery out shake the crap outta it if water is in the speakers then blow dry it from the back on high settings.
Just keep it from cookin the phone and you should be good to go

Again, 2 hours is not nearly enough time to fully dry out. If there is ONE drop of liquid on the board when you try to fire it up, it will short something out. ALWAYS wait at least 24-48 hours before trying to turn it on.

Trident kraken 2 case/ electra

I recently got my Droid X2 and love it but being in the automotive industry im worried ill drop it or it will slip out of my pocket while im working around the cars in the shop. Ive seen a friends otterbox defender and i just dont like how the rubber will come off and you have to push it back in the little grove on the sides. Ive seen the Trident Kraken 2 and Electra, on amazon it says they are both 1 inch thick, i want to know is there any difference in thickness between the two, also on the Electra where you cant use a battery door im worried water or moisture will get to the inside of the phone and mess it up. If anyone can clear a these things up thanks i need a case soon.
Ive had the Electra for months now and I'll never look back, never had a problem with it, i charge my phone every other night and necer come close to it dying. It will NOT be sliding out of your pocket (we wear the same "jumpsuit overalls" in my line of work) unless you plan on being completly upside down and getting shaken at the same time
Sent from my MB870 using xda app-developers app
Ive been looking at amazon over the past few days and the kraken 2 is 29$ currently and the electra is 50$ currently, i charge my phone every night but from 7 am to 12 midnight i have about 30% left to 45% left of the battery, it depends on how much i use my phone per day for calls and such. The only thing pushing me away from the electra is the battery is kinda exposed, im just worried about mosturie getting it and messing up the phone, it looks like theres a little bit of rubber that the outside shell can press against to keep stuff out but thats been in the back of my mind thinking about the cases. On amazon the kraken 2 is 1 inch thick and the electra is also 1 inch thick? If you dont mind LordRalh3 meassuring it for me just the thickness is all im kinda worried about. Thanks, and i do have the get under some cars on a creeper is the only time im worried about the phone sliding out of my pocket.
I dont quite follow, there is no case that is actually waterproof? Ive never used my phone while swimming or playing in the rain and i dont recommend anyone doing that, ive not had a problem with moisture even in 90%humid with me sweating for 12 hours straight... Just under 7/8 of an inch thick and as to the battery being exposed.... Not sure what you mean, this is the most protective case made period, including otterbox, original kraken, liquipel, z shield, or any other things you've seen. The kraken 2 got horrible reviews btw, doesnt snap together properly and wears out quick, kraken original or electra is what you want.
And the creeper under the car is a non issue you'd have to litterally be upside down and getting shaken for this to fall out
Sent from my MB870 using xda app-developers app
Thats not as thick as i thought it would be, im starting to lean toward the electra, i guess im just more protective about my phone. Im gonna try to keep my x2 for as long as i can. The only two complaints ive read about the electra is the proximity sensor hole can get some dust in it and the sensor wont work, i can just blow that out no big deal, but ive also read where the screen protector on the electra sometimes wont let me pull the notification bar down. Thanks for the help though i just want buy something that is going to be good, cuz money dont come easy nowadays.
I would buy it now but the price went back up :/
I broke down and bought a kraken 2 case and love it, I would have likes to get the Electra but I needed a case quickly and didn't have much to speed but Ill keep my eye on the Electra and might buy it down the road.

So I dropped my DNA on asphalt today

Am I the first one to do so? As I got out of my car the phone fell out of my jacket pocket and as I heard the thud and skitting sound I thought fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu just my luck... Well it seems the phone hit on the soft edge where the power button is and slid on the pavement. After wiping the pebbles off of it I've noticed a couple of small indentations in the soft plastic but they are barely noticeable and not a single scratch on the screen. I guess this phone is pretty durable.

I'm glad that your phone is generally ok.
But reading your story made a part of me die inside.
"fuuuuuuuuuu" indeed
I did the same thing with my Rezound when I first got it.
I dropped it as I was walking to the car and it took quite a tumble!
Several scratches in the outside plastic but the screen survived.
That was before I had any case on it too.

Otterbox Commuter Series - Can't beat that!
Not sure I would say this phone is durable based on that one case, but I can certainly say you were lucky. Truth is any phone will break if it hits the ground at the right angle. Doesn't even have to be a large drop.
I would certainly felt like crap had I broken the phone already, but I don't really want to cover it up
I've dropped my DNA on a tile floor from chest height and couldn't find any marks anywhere to show where it hit. Lucky or durable, I don't know.

My wife has been dropping her Gnex constantly since January. It finally cracked last week. If it doesn't break the first time you drop it, you aren't dropping it correctly
I cant wait to see tech sites do durability tests

I think my wife dropped it on a pebble, looking at the impact area.
Putting a case on this would be like throwing a tarp over a Ducati.
I've dropped one phone in 12 years. I am consciously reminding myself not to drop a phone when using it.
It's like looking both ways before you pull out into traffic.

Zerolemon case/extended battery, fell off car at 35mph!

i bought the 10000mAh battery with case earlier this year and it's been great. i can abuse that battery like no other and it just won't die.
however, the real reason for this post is about the case.
i recently had a potato moment and left my phone on the roof of my friends car that i was working on. went for a test drive, out of my neighborhood, down teh main streeet at about 35 mph and suddenly i hear a weird little noise and look up in the mirror to see my phone bounce down the back window, off the trunk, onto the street and then into the ditch.
immediately my heart stopped and i ducked into the first turn off i got to., got out and walked along the side of the road, hoping to find my phone, expecting the worst...
Found it face down in the grass and immediately picked it up and turned it over... glass was intact! the plastic frame of the case had one crack in it that i was able to put back in place inside the rubber case. the rubber had some road rash but was overall intact as well. only thing wrong was my Spen was missing as it must have been ejected by the impact.
no big deal as i ordered a new one.
Main point though, this case works!
So close. My UAG had a similar experience. Ran over by a lorry due and as good as new!

Would you try that again if you're so confident that the case works? Personal experience does not equal fact.

jeez dude, relax. it worked for me the one time i needed it. that's all i need. i have no idea if it iwll work again because there's no way to guarantee it will hit the pavement at the exact same angle.
it worked better than no case and i'im pretty confident in saying it works better than some of the other cases i've had in the past that I know wouldn't hold up to the same situation.
did you have a bad experience with yours or are you just trying to stir up soemthing out of nothing?
i read alot of amazon reveiws and forums about this battery .plenty people have dropped there's off scaffolding and at heights ect and survived glad yours is held up but its the battery life i bought this for and its doing really well 19 hours on screen time and 3 days untill charge im really happy .it does feel vey sturdy though it dont have to be delicate with it anymore its like a tonka toy?
Can you upload pics of your damaged case ???
And here I was sure I was alone.
I've managed exactly sane scenario as above and my phone also lived to waste more of my time everyday >]. Thou in my case, ZL casing survived intact. And few years before broken whatitsname holder sent my galaxy tab clothed in otterbox defender through car window on particularly emotional curve. Again, there were survivors.
Those cases work and I can't consider "naked"device complete without one now. And ZL add really big battery to the mix..
