but no help
what to do to increse max brightness
help
It's more than likely a physical constraint of the display. I agree it sucks, but you can't fix it.
The only time you can change it is when watching a video. If you hit the menu button an option for playing vids in sunlight appears. So it prooves it can be done. Just samsung have not included it the general settings menu. Daft really.

All that does is oversaturate the image so it appears clearer in bright light. It distorts the image to ensure most of the subpixels are at maximum brightness.

I was just standing outiside and noticed that I couldn't read the screen of my new Galaxy S2 which I never noticed on my Nexus S. So I compared the two in direct sunlight.
Isn't the sAMOLED+ supposed to be brighter than the original sAMOLED screen?
Is my screen less bright than other sAMOLED+ screens?
My Galaxy S 2 is definatly brighter in sunlight than my Nexus S.
although i have turned off my auto brightness and whacked it right up on both..
At brightness zero the nexus s is brighter than the galaxy s 2.
I noticed that in bright sunlight, I can't see the screen at all on my SGSG2 with it set to zero, which causes a bit of a problem upping the brightness! On the Nexus, I could see well enough to change it.
I think at full brightness though, the SGS2 is brighter. My retinas haven't recovered from accidentally setting 100% whilst reading at night.
I've been wondering whether there is a way to boost the brightness, I was going to make a topic about it.
Some reviews I've seen say they had to turn the screen down to lowest brightness as the screen is so bright, etc. however my screen is nothing special in terms of brightness really and I have it on full, with auto adjust off colours are good though.

yes, I did that. the pictures are taken with both screens on 100%
I guess my screen is just not as bright as others :/
Also, under Settings -> Display, make sure that "Auto Adjust Screen power" is disabled... this option tries to save some battery by lowering the brightness when the image displayed is brighter : It can be useful in movies but it's just useless and annoying when you're browsing or reading.
PS : And SuperAMOLED+ is not supposed to be brighter than sAMOLED, it's the same without the pentile matrix. When samsung announced an improvement in battery life and brightness they were still comparing it to LCD screens from a few years ago.
thanks bluescreenjunkie, that setting actually helped (a bit).
and yes, your probably right about samsungs claims as well, I probably subconsciously interpreted samsungs claims the best way possible ... (so I had a reason to go buy it).
thanks for your input.
well it is possible to increase the brightness but it takes some development, like supercurrio did for the 2.3.3 kernel for the nexus s and cm7 sgs1 kernel with the voodoo app.
Dont know if hes gonna do the same for the sgs2, i really like it on my sgs1 for sure.
he increased the brightness? well that explaines it then (as it's running a voodoo kernel) .
Side by side, looking at the same web page (or any screen), at the same brightness setting, the screen on my Captivate is noticebly brighter than the screen on my SGS II. WTF Has anyone else noticed this or compared? I'm interested to see if this is happening to anyone else.
Mine at full brightness is almost the same, with the Captivate slightly brighter. Honestly though the color rendering is a lot better on the SGS2 than on the Captivate, and less brightness is probably part of that change.
I agree with the color rendering and overall display being better. I was just surprised at first.

It is not as bright as the Captivate, but the display is so much better. I do like that is much dimmer if the room is dark. My captivate hurt my eyes at night, even with the display set to the lowest it would go.
So I've got my prime today, I'm verry happy about the tablet.
There's just one problem that I've got with it.
The screen looks overexposed. The whites looks way brighter than I feel it should be.
And the colors are also a lot lighter than they are on my Desire.
(I've tested it with this app).
Is this common for a ips plus display or is it a software / hardware problem?
EDIT: Screen settings are IPS+ off at +-20%.
Share some settings!
Is that with the IPS+ on? What's the backlight at?
Granted that pic does show crappy blacklevel, but you're probably the first to biatch about the screen.

Yea sorry about not mentioning the settings.

Maybe I'm just spoiled by the amoled of my desire. But when I've got an 'legacy' app that has a pup up that turns the rest of the screen dark. It seems to me that that's the way the screen should always be.
I agree it is a bit overexposed over 50% brightness and if the IPS+ is on. Really like it when using it outdoors! Not many tablets are even useable outside......

I agree it's awesome outside, but what does it mater if it looks weired inside..
I have a bit different overexposure problem.
I noticed that white becomes overexposed after watching some sort of video. For example when I watch something and then hit home button the white label texts below icons are harder to read and icons look a bit too pale. Then in about 20 seconds it gradually becomes normal. I'm not sure if it was like that right from the start, most likely no (I own it about 10 days).
It happens for Default Player, DICE Player, MX Video Player, ZiXi Player, YouTube app. Didn't happen for YouTube videos played full screen in browser.
Any idea what is happening?
I'll try to make some pictures tomorrow.
I think its because of that Didim technology which saves battery by adjusting contrast and brightness. http://phandroid.com/2011/11/18/nvi...logy-didim-reduces-display-power-consumption/ and its so f/in annoying while watching movies.

This is indeed the culprit in my experience, and it's easily resolvable: don't use Power Saving mode!
When Power Saving mode is enabled, some parts of the interface / apps seem over-exposed, also text looks a little bit more faded somehow. After switching to Balanced or Performance mode, that's all gone.

Thanks! Yes, I guess that's because of that DIDIM technology. But it happens also in balanced mode, only in performance mode I have no overexposure.
With the significant drop of SuperAMOLED quality control or just plain bad luck on my end I've decided to call it quits and look at other screen technologies and suffice to say the rumored Tab 11.6 is peaking my interest and probably that device will come with PLS.
I've had a chance to compare the Tab10.1 and Ipad2 but I really didn't do so extensively, I was comparing the TF201 , Ipad2 and Tab7.7 and after a lot of testing I've concluded that SuperAMOLED only offers better blacks, the rest is just a subjective preference like color saturation, even viewing angles are superior on the TF201 and Ipad2.
My primary usage is video playback then web browsing, Im also particular with white tones across all brightness levels and with my current Tab7.7 the white tones at low brightness are just horrible compared to the TF201, Tab10.1 and Ipad2
Anyone with extended experience on the said devices can share their opinions between the PLS on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 vs the IPS on the Ipad2 or TF201?
BUMP for my post, how does the Tab 10.1's screen perform in terms of movie viewing?

Pretty good when the brightness is turned all the way up, This being on Dice Player @ 255/255, Better contrast and color, I think Bravia engine can be added to enhance the colors.

about 95% of the time I use the device at the bed room, so 0-33% brightness might be up my alley. When you say better contrast and color is that in comparison to the Ipad2 screen ?

I watch a lot of series and some movies on my Tab while in bed and imo it's pretty great (especially when they're 720p ). It's almost always at night so no problems with the sun shining on the screen though. With the sun shining directly on the screen, I doubt you could really enjoy any movie ...
I have my brightness set somewhere between 50-100/255 on Dice Player, depending on the movie and if I have any lights on in the room.

Yeah around daytime it's best on 255 but around night time I keep it to 150 or such, any higher at night is like an alien abduction
Hmm on a superamoled screen i keep it at 46 only. But that doesnt really matter as long as the whites in web pages remain white unlile oled.

I've been wondering the same too, On my desktop it shows XDA is creamish/pink but on the tablet it shows that xda is white o.o

Strange, it shows the same color for me both on computer and on the tablet. I *did* have the "white xda" problem in the past though, both on my desktop, laptop and tablet. Thought it had something to do with a faulty .css or something similar though, haven't seen it in a long while now.
What I mean is on low brightness levels the white tones on the SuperAMOLED screen becomes either grainy or may turn into yellowish, pinkish or blueish depending on the the screen you've got. Though movie quality is great I also noticed it makes an actual scene darker crushing detail.. Samsung tried to fix this with a different gamma profile on the Galaxy Note but it ends up giving blocky blacks.
I've come across a store demo unit and sadly I cant transfer over my media files, BT just takes to long and the Tab10.1 has no wifi direct.
Is backlight bleeding a common issue on the pls screen?

PLS is plane line switching where as ips is in plane switching. The only difference between the Displays is the light thourough put is higher in Pls that ips hence the more vibrant colors and brighter backlight

What's the deal? Anandtech said the S6 was way brighter. It's the opposite for me. Both are on manual brightness settings.

Strangely when I measured brightness with AMOLED photo mode and Samsung Purple theme, max brightness was oddly lowish, then set stock theme and adaptive screen mode, and it behaved normally, 351 nits full screen white with manual settings, 572 auto settings under sunlight, 718 auto under sunlight with small white area. That's roughtly in line with the Note 4. Not entirely sure what's the deal here, but the edge DEFINITELY can go as high as the S6 or the Note 4.
Is the S6 brighter then the edge? I've heard it's screen is better.
Sent from my SM-G925T using XDA Free mobile app
The edge is brighter and it seems that manual brightness doesn't go that high but auto brightness gets much higher (which I don't get) but that's what I've read. Works for me. Gets plenty bright and plenty dim
