Phone Memory vs Internal Storage? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

hey all,
just wondering what's the difference between using the "phone memory (1.8gb)" vs "internal storage(25gb)" for apps?
i'm new to this phone (just arrived in the post this morning), and didn't realise the internal storage would be divided in this way.
to be honest 2gb for apps is still plenty really
so am i better off keeping all my apps on that 1.8gb section, or should i try moving them to the 25gb storage?

While u still have some free space in phone memory (internal) let the android decides. I still have 900mB in the internal but some of my games are installed in internal storage (sd card)

I guess, there is no harm in utilizing your 28GB internal memory and freeing your 1.8GB phone memory...
I'm moving every APPs to internal memory whenever they are possible...

Should be fine if you install everything in your internal memory, games that take up a lot of space can go to external to free internal memory. Be aware that some apps don't behave well when they are in the external memory.

Storage memory issues.

I recently brought an s2 without knowing about the 2gig internal mem and 11 gig usb storage which is a disappointing thing as most of the apps or games get installed on 2gig phone mem and cannot be moved. This makes the other 11gig useless except for storing other data. I also have 16gig external sd card which i purchased separately but it is also useless except that the cam pics location can be changed to it.
Is there anyway to resolve this and make sure that the apps or games get installed on either external sd card or the usbstorage..over a period of time i guess that the 2gig phone memory will be full and the phone becomes slow...can anyone pls suggest me..

Move your apps to the sd card. No other phones can help you. You purchased the best one imo.
Titanium Backup
Apps2Sd

I do move the apps to the SD card, But whats the use of the 11 gig internal usb storage memory? Assume that i don't have an SD card then how? Down the lane after i install the apps or games my phone or device memory(2Gig) on to which the apps get installed by default will be full and might run in to some issues? Isn't there anyway to make the apps get installed on to SD card or internal usb storage memory(11 Gig) while installing itself?
Internal storage = 2 gb = it`s the default install path for apps
Sdcard = 11 gb = it` s the internal built in "external" sd card. If You use app2sd that's the external sd card for android.
External_sdcard = 2nd external sd card (up to 32gb) = ONLY GOOD FOR MASS STORAGE (vids, pics, docs etc)
Thats it. You cant change this fact since android is not made to handle a 2nd ext sd as system drive......

There is a way to set the sd as default install. I read it somewhere. It is involves some programs and basic commands in windows. But save yourself the trouble and get app2sd App.

Hey troed,
Thanks for the brief explanation, even i know that the 2nd external SD cannot be used as the system drive, I store all my Docs, Pics, Vids and stuff on it....
But is there any way to make the apps installed on Sdcard = 11 gb = it` s the internal built in "external" sd card?
when we download the apps they by default gets installed on to Internal storage = 2 gb = it`s the default install path for apps.
Is there any way to make the sd card the default one for installation of apps?
Also we will not be able to move all apps to the external sdcard, only few of them give the option of moving them to sdcard even if we use apps2sd...
All i'm trying to figure out is that is there any way to leave the internal storage as it is and install or move the apps to sdcard or external sdcard because over a period of time i fear that the my phone internal 2gig memory might get full and i may run in to problems like phone hanging and out of memory issues for most of the operations....
Applications/games with large amount of data usually stores the majority of their data on the SD-card (the 11GB partition in SGS2), this includes e g Gameloft games, and navigation systems, so it is not easy to fill up 2GB even without use of apps2SD or similar solutions.
I have a lot of apps and games on my SGS2, and I have used 650MB so far, so it is still 2/3 left, if I reach 2GB then I really need to clean up anyway...
HTC desire had about 100MB left for apps, that was a huge problem, but on SGS2 with 20 times more space I don't think you should be too worried.

[Q] Device memory only 1.97Gb?

Hi,
I actually picked the S2 over the Sensation because of the slightly higher specs and the fact that phone has 16gb internal memory. Being new to android (switch from iPhone) I really don't get what device memory is and why it's filling up so fast. I have barely installed 5 tiny apps and already 140Mb out of the 1.97Gb has already been used. I installed loads of apps on my iPhone and I intend to do that same on my new one so could someone please explain this concept of device memory and what exactly is stored in there. Also, if I run out of device memory, how do I free it up or increase the 1.97Gb limit?
2GB /data rest as internal sd card, system partition, cache, etc.
You can move apps to sd card if the data partition is full.

Relax, there's plenty of space. I've more than 80 apps installed, and they uses 664MB, so around 240 apps before memory is filled up... Remember that large games like Gameloft games installs their main data on the 12GB partition. And there is also a possibility to move most of the apps to that area as well, but it is unlikely that you need that.
The 140MB used on your phone probably includes some pre-installed apps.
Phew! That's big relief... Thanks so much. Just one last small doubt, I realized that only some apps are allow to be moved to the SD card while others like facebook have the this option greyed out. Why is this exactly?
some apps have the ability to be moved to sd card while others dont due to the way they are built..
can use device internal memory to store app data?
guys is it possible to use the device internal memory (1.9gb) to store app data in absence of internal and external SD card? my camera/apps don't run in absence of the SD card any way to get around this by using the the device internal memory? ( i have 1.5gb free after installation of all the necessarily apps)

[Q] why does my brand new 16GB Flyer say it has 3.8GB free?

I just purchased a 16GB Flyer from BestBuy and in "Storage" it says that I have 3.8GB free. WHAT THE HECK! Where did all my memory go?!
I have the same problem too.
Do you have and sd card in the device?
Also please post a screen shot.
The internal storage is partitioned into tablet storage and internal storage; you have access to both so by adding them together, you should have about 12 gb of usable storage. The remaining space is used up by the system (Android & Sense).

Correct:
I think mine said 3.8gb free for app storage and 8.3gb
free for internal storage.
Also have a 32gb card, so another 30gb available

Question... I have a 16 gb card in mine, and I'm using aTorrent and am unable to find a way to download to sdcard... Very confusing as I can see the folders but it doesn't show correct storage amount
Not sure, since have not used aTorrent. Does it allow changing download directories?
3.8 gb is used for apps the other for music and files and last little bit is used for system files its partitioned the way htc has it. I don't know of anyway to change it wish I could or wish I did know how too

Is the memory still partitioned app storage vs internal file storage (music, files, etc.) in HC 3.x or does it become one storage area. I'm deciding on whether or not to get a HTC Flyer off of eBay.
Yes, it is still like that in HC.

galaxy s2 apps installation limit

galaxy s2 have 2gb space for only apps.....if the apps occupied total 2gb memory of that space...then where the other apps can be installed......???
is there any method for removing that apps installation limit guys.....??????
That's what the sd card is for. Bigger applications/games utilize the sd card to store their files.

no bro........whats my question is breaking the certain limit of apps installation..........because many apps not supporting apps2sd that i hav installed....some apps can be moved to sd they are moving to external sd card instead of internal memory....
so i am getting huge bootloops when sd card inserted...if i removed it phone is normal....
Use titanium backup if your rooted and long press on any app that's not apps2sd by default then you should be able to move them to your SD card
Not sure if I've ever heard of anyone using up all the 2gb with apps. I have about 150 user apps and still have over 1gb left.
That's because app data for large apps is stored on the SD card, for example with gameloft games which on their own can be over 2gb (like 9mm). Only a few MB (the actual app) goes against the 2gb partition.

I have installed also about 150 apps and have used 1.4/2 GB for apps and my sd card is 5.6/11.5 GB. I'm wondering if buying a removable micro sd card will it increase my app storage limit to above 2GB?

Nah it wont. The 2gb for apps is part of the internal memory and is set. You can however move apps to SD with titanium and others. I pretty much ran out of internal SD (the 11.5gb part) due to gameloft game data. But then I installed 'gl to sd' from the market. It allows you to move game data files to external sd card. 9mm itself frees up 2.2gb from the internal sd.

App Storage?

I have a TS with 8 GB internal memory and have installed a 32 GB micro-sd card. If I look at my "storage" setting, it indicates that I hav 1.27GB TOTAL "Internal" storage, 4.91 GB "Phone" storage and 29.3 GB "SD" card storage. My "internal" storage is almost completely filled with apps, whereas my "phone" storage and "SD" card storage are almost empty.
It looks like all apps are being loaded to "internal" storage. Not sure the difference between that and "Phone" storage. My watch will no longer let me download apps because the "internal" storage is full. Is it possible to direct the storage to the"Phone" storage? I can;t find a setting for that anywhere.
Internal- where the apps go
Phone- where music, pics and such go
SDCard- where music, pics and such go
I had suggest a long time ago that internal be made larger or that internal and phone be made converted into internal only and require an SDCard. Almost nobody wanted this.

Well that sucks......Time to delete some apps I guess..
Have you tried an app like "apk2sd" to move as much from internal to SD card ? I am sorry I cannot remember the name exactly, I have not used such since I retired my Droid3.

Problem with apps2SD is that if he factory resets the watch, the apps and data are still on the SD card but the watch won't know that. It's like you deleting a shortcut but not uninstalling the app.
