[Q] Rezound in unknown condition, want to diagnose and fix - HTC Rezound

Recently acquired a Rezound in unknown, but not working condition. Previous owner said he tried to put a ROM on it, and it didn't work. He said it worked prior to the failed mod, and he's not a stranger, so I believe him.
All the original packaging and hardware are here. I don't think there is any hardware damage, everything looks visually ok. Does not appear to be the original SD card, it's only 8 gb.
The battery has power, and when I turn it on, I get the white HTC screen for at least 20 minutes.
I'm not a complete noob, I have successfully done a lot of mods to my old Eris, but this Rezound is a different animal. How do I proceed?
I tried to fix this earlier, and had to set it aside. Now I'm trying again.

Boot into hboot (google it if you don't know) and tell us the hboot version. If you can see the white htc screen the phone software can be fixed relatively painlessly.

Unlocked
vigor pvt ship s-on rl
hboot-2.11.0000

Update:
I installed amon ra, and then installed Scotts CleanROM Pro 4.5.
And now it is sitting at the white htc screen. How long should this take?

Did you wipe data a few times before installing CleanROM?

"A few times"? No. I just did it once.
Update:
I added the GB firmware update, and followed the instructions for Method 4 at:
http://www.scottsroms.com/content.php/153-Rezound-CleanROM-Developer-Edition-1-4-is-now-out!
I downloaded his files, including the PH98IMG.zip, and also flashed that per the instructions.
Do I need to wipe multiple times?
as a heads up, I did get a warning in the Fastboot that said the battery voltage was low. Could that be the source of my headaches?

Personally the best thing to do IMHO is to flash the RUU and start over. See if that boots. If it doesn't then you have a other problems.
Also. If you try reflashing in recovery wipe data, boot and system.
Flash that Rom, gb patch, then reboot to bootloader and flash the ph98img.

Ok, I'll give that a try. Can you be more specific about the ruu? Do you mean the ones linked on Scotts How To Unroot Android Forums sticky? (http://androidforums.com/rezound-al...ys-noob-friendly-root-guide-start-finish.html)
I'm trying to charge the battery, but it definitely isn't getting past the white HTC screen.
Thanks for the help so far.

Yes where Scott says full RUU. Follow that to a T.
It really sounds like a kernel issues, but to be on the safe side. Sometimes you just have to ruu regardless cause something got messed up that wiping in recovery can't fix.
If it boots after RUU, reunlock, s-off and be a happy camper. If you get it to boot after ruu and need more help just PM me or repost in this thread.
You seem to be pretty good at searching. All the info you need is on these forums.

So far so good. Running the ruu now, and it's sending. If this works it will get me back to a working phone, which is all I need for now. I'll be back to rom it again. Or maybe I'll just put a launcher on it which may be enough temporarily.

Ok, bingo. I'm in. Sent a donation. Thanks.

I am glad you got it working, but in all honesty you didn't have to donate a dime to me. Would have helped you either way. I'll probably just end up passing it along to a dev who really deserves it.

Cannot unlock eBay Rezound

I purchased a Rezound from eBay and it's locked with a gesture lock. The seller told me to do a factory reset, which I did a couple of times, and it doesn't reset the phone to the new activation screen. It looks like he rooted the phone at one point. The recovery screen says "Tampered," "Relocked," and "VIGOR PVT SHIP S-ON RL."
My question is, how do I get past the gesture lock? Will rooting and flashing a different rom do the trick? I am obviously a newbie, and likely wouldn't have rooted it and installed a custom rom if I didn't have to, but it seems like I may have to at this point. Thanks!

Flash a custom recovery and wipe if you want the stock Rom.rooted
Or you can just ruu to stock and it will wipe it

Thanks for the advice. I used the Rezound All in One kit and got it working. I'll leave it rooted for now, maybe install ICS on it.

Deff go for ICS, i'd even recommend stepping up to Sense 4 but you might prefer stock
Sense 4.0 still has a few bugs, but 3.6 is golden.

Obviously the first thing that comes to mind is if all it needed was to have a factory reset done why didn't the seller do just that and avoid the hassle? Kinda like when you look at a car and all it needs for the AC to work is a recharge..yeah I've been bit by that one before too.
Glad you got it working..youll enjoy being rooted
Looks like it isn't entirely right. I took it to Verizon to get it activated, and I have data connectivity but cannot call or text at all. The software version is 4.0.3 Android with 3.6 Sense. I am going to try to restore the factory version (from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338916) and hope that does the trick. Otherwise, I guess there's something wrong and I have to return the phone to the seller.

Download that file, rename it PH98IMG.ZIP and make sure it isn't named PH98IMG.ZIP.ZIP and then put that on the root of the actual SD Card. Not the internal memory.
Reboot into hboot, and it will find that file and load it. You will have to chose volume + to accept. It will flash bootloader first, then the radios and rom and such. After this has flashed and booted, delete the PH98IMG.ZIP file from your sd card, and then reboot into hboot and chose factory reset. Let it do its thing, and try a phone call or text on reboot.
should be good to go after this.
I downloaded the file, put it in the root directory of the sd card, and booted into hboot. It says "Loading PH98IMG.zip" for a few minutes, then goes back to the hboot screen. I then powered down, removed SD card, and tried to factory reset. The phone entered the Android system recovery. I rebooted, and the phone seemed exactly the same. I'll retry, maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Update: I've retried a few times, and it just seems that hboot won't load PH98IMG.zip. Might it matter that I'm still at S-ON?

Try redownloading again might have been a bad download. Remember once the file starts to flash it might shut off and turn on and continue doing its thing just make sure when it's all done every item says "ok" next to it if it does your good to go next just make sure you go into bootloader do a factory reset.

[Q] Upgrade from 2.3 to 4.0?

My HTC Rezound was upgraded soon after I got it, I did whatever was necessary (don't remember exactly) to install CleanRom 4.5 (I think), which is definitely android 2.3.
Obviously, I missed the OTA Update due to CleanRom. How can I upgrade to 4.0? I understood how to do everything 6 months ago, unfortunately now I have no idea. Thank you in advance for your help!
Are you "S-Off"? If not, make this your first priority. Then you can flash back and forth between roms with the greatest of ease. Then flash the latest RUU

Reboot into bootloader (hold power+vol down) the bootloader screen will tell you
Also, post the radio version numbers here, that will also tell us what firmware you are on (2.3 or 4.0)
I'd you are on gb firmware still, you will need to run the ics ota RUU. Do a search for it, it is an easy process

It said S-On, so I guess I didn't S-OFF previously. Does this mean I have to wipe to install a new OS if I don't S-OFF?
In "About Phone"->"Software Information", it says
Android Version 2.3.4.
Software number CleanROM GBE 1.6
Kernel Version 2.6.35.13-gf1931dc
Baseband Version 0.95.00.1118r, 0.95.00.1223r
Build number 2.01.605.11 CL252791
Hoping one of the above is the number you were looking for.
Also - thank you for the help. I'm reading threads about SOFF right now, and poking around the RUU link provided.

Yep that's what I needed, so just run that ruu, it will wipe everything except your external sd so do what's necessary to avoid losing data (do a back up of your apps and text messages and whatnot) the app I use for this is Gobackup from Google play.
After that you just need to re flash a recovery and then an ics rom of your choice. S off is not necessary, it just makes flashing kernels require one less step

You got a red triangle when trying to boot normally? That's Ok, I'm asking you to boot into bootloader by doing this :
1) pull battery out and reinsert
2) start device by holding volume down+power buttons until a white screen appears with some info on it.
If you get that screen your not bricked, and you can go ahead and put the RUU on the sd card using your computer and an sd card reader

[Q] Accidentally flashed a PA ROM before I went S-OFF, now I'm stuck. Please help!

I was a bit overzealous in wanting to get ParanoidAndroid up on my refurb that just came in the mail. I unlocked the bootloader, then rooted, but before doing S-OFF, I tried to flash PA. Now, I'm stuck on the HTC bootscreen. I can get into the bootloader and TWRP, but when I try to flash something else, it freezes and reboots right around when it says "Installing Kernel, please wait."
I'm hoping there's something i can do from this point, I'm just not sure what.
You have to fastboot flash the kernel/boot.img since you are s-on
Download meanbean rom and follow the instructions in the op for s-on, then go get s-off... Good luck!

So, the OP cannot do the full RUU thing.
Can't he just do a factory reset and then boot to one of the custom recoveries and re-flash the latest OTA?
cheers,

No op's links have broken software...I have the needed files on my dropbox and media fire account...and no all factory reset does is wipe all data and setting for ROM...and may cause custom ROMs to not boot...ota is only achievable if on stock ROM and there is an update...however I have all those proper files too

that isnt a pure stock ota bud...thats a rom made with includes from it and rooted
This might sound stupid, but your objective here really is to get stockish, correct? With your HBoot you could use this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2260154
Just make sure to flash boot.img afterwards via fastboot. This is as close to pure stock (only root added) as you can get without S-Off or other trickery. It should suffice for the requirements of the OP.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I've been trying to deal with this problem over in the liquidsmooth thread, but it's clear now that my problems are not related specifically to the rom and that thread isn't really the place for it.
I've lost all cell connectivity. Calls, texts, data, everything. The liquid rom had been working for me for over a week. I've reverted to previous roms both with new flashes and using restore files. I've tried a different recovery. Every time, it acts like I don't have a sim card.
I was suspecting that my sim might be bad, but back on the liquidsmooth thread, it was suggested that I need to RUU back to stock and start over. I'd be willing to do that except the only way suggested was really complicated. I'm S-on and it included ubuntu and the wire trick to get s-off, which I'm hesitant to do. I searched and found another thread with instructions to run an RUU while still s-on, and it seems like it would have worked except that my hboot is newer than the RUU used, and I've been unable to find a newer one.
I tried flashing the stock rom above and flashing the stock recovery that I had from when I first rooted several months ago. It still thinks I don't have a sim card, but otherwise it booted fine until I re-locked to bootloader. Then it wouldn't boot anymore. I guess it still knows that those versions of hboot, the recovery, and the rom don't quite go together.
Is there an RUU that will work with hboot 2.28 to "un-root" my phone without downloading a second operating system and performing surgery on my phone? Are the correct stock rom and recovery out there that I can flash and re-lock? Is there a way to know if that is actually the problem if if it is just my sim card? Are there any other ideas to get my phone functioning again?
Please help!

There is no RUU for your hboot, need to s-off...
If your SIM is bad, get a new one from Verizon.
Also, is the battery cover on?

On that note... Are using a stock battery cover? Some aftermarket ones are questionable at best. Also, try another SIM, Verizon will replace it free.

I tried using a friend's good sim card and it didn't work. Yes, I'm using the stock battery cover. I guess I'll have to do s-off so I can RUU back to stock.
Ugh . . . This has become so much more than I ever intended to get myself into

You didn't answer my question, is it on the phone while you're testing your connection. Dumb question I know, antenna's are in it though and I've caught people leaving it off and not getting a signal then wondering why...

Sorry, I missed that part of the question. We did it pretty quick, but I think I did put the battery cover. Also, it's not just getting no signal, there is an icon in the notification bar and a big message on the lock screen says I have no sim card at all. That has never happened before, even with the battery cover off. As I look back I realize I failed to mention that important detail. I guess it still couldn't hurt to try a brand new sim card before taking the plunge into s-off. Even if that isn't the problem, at least I'll know for sure, and as you pointed out, its easy and free.

[Q] Stock RUU failed and won't work; basically locked out of phone. Can you help?

Hello. Never made a thread before and was really hoping I wouldn't have to or would find an answer elsewhere.
Since that didn't work out, here's my problem:
Background: Evo 3d, virgin mobile, unlocked bootloader, s-off, hboot was at 1.50, and I don't remember what the radio was at. I was running CM11 and was quite happy until two days ago when I stopped receiving texts! No clue why, just stopped. Hangouts, etc etc. Called VM and they had no idea why that was happening either. Tried switching roms, reinstalling backups, etc etc. Clean wipes and all. Then I saw someone said they had to [for some reason] reinstall everything stock and then they had messaging back. So that's what I set out to do.
In Between: Used the RUU that I'm fairly certain came with my phone. Everything was good, it erased everything, and "updated system" and signatures. It was almost finished when BAM, popped up with error 152 Image Update Error; right at the very end. Quite disappointing. Tried it multiple times again with the same result. Not sure what to do.
Current: Only screen I can see (looks like shortened bootloader screen) says "***locked***" at the top, hboot 1.57.0000, radio 1.06.00.126, then says openADSP-v02.6.0.2226.00.0217eMMc-boot
Also tried flashing the unlock_code.bin, and while it took it, it changed nothing. One screen I did see very briefly but cannot replicate said that everything was there except system. Not really sure how to take that or what to do. Any and all help would be helpful. As is it sits on the HTC screen with exclamation points in each corner. When unplugged from usb it gives me that above screen. Removing battering and restarting to bootloader still gives the same screen.
Did you run ruu through windows or pg86img.zip?

You can try this
https://www.dropbox.com/s/d4baafpgchgg4ef/ruu-PG86IMG.zip
Put that on the root of your SD card and rename to pg86img.zip
Make sure its the only one there
Boot to boot loader and accept updates
It may reboot itself to bootloader, if it asks to accept again then accept
When its done reboot your phone
Rename or remove the file when done
Hope that helps

So I have my phone working now. I think it was the RUU.exe that I was using. I downloaded a different one from here http://androidruu.com/Shooter/ after much googling. That finally restored it to original VM stock rom etc. I couldn't use your method of placing the zip onto the root of my SD because despite it being there, it wouldn't go through the normal search for the file. I would remove the battery, put it back in, use the button key combo to try and open to bootloader, and it would go but it would be the page with the status and then it would instantly go back to the black screen with HTC logo.
Thank you for your help though!
Also I'm not sure how useful exactly this will be for anyone else, but if you find yourself ruu'd and needing better files...
The hboot ENG 1.04 I got from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1817513
ALL other downloads of that hboot did not work AT ALL.
I got the updated radio from here: http://androidforums.com/cdma-evo-3d-all-things-root/648902-radios-hboot-firmware-all-downloads.html
The hboots on that site however are stock and most likely won't run the custom roms as well, if at all, as 1.04.

But the hboots on the site aren't helpful fyi

Hey, that's my thread. Just curious what you mean by the hboots aren't helpful?
If there is a problem I'm unaware of, I'd be happy to know what it is so I can get it squared away.

I must apologize! I seem to have mis stated that; they are helpful with regards to them being the stock hboots. However in my particular case those stock hboots weren't for me. I'll edit that here in a sec, but if I was going back to full stock I'd definitely use your stock VM hboot and it would be helpful in that case. Hope that makes sense, no disrespect meant!

Thanks for clarifying that! I see what you meant now.
No worries, I didn't take offense or think you were disrespectful; I just wanted to make sure the downloads were working properly!
And for the record, the stock hboots will work just fine with custom roms. Hboot 1.50 for example will be compatible with the same selection of roms as JuopunutBear 1.50.5050. The difference is that JuopunutBear is patched and will allow for extra fastboot commands and allow them to be run on a locked bootloader.
The eng 1.04 hboot allows for extra fastboot commands that the stock hboot cannot. But you can boot any rom out there on the stock hboots. I've used stock 1.50 forever on this device.
