Upgrading to the s3 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How do i transfer all my data over to the new phone?
I have many apps that i use along with Angry Birds that i have played for a long time and have achieved 3 stars in practually all levels.
Im thinking of doing an exchange to keep the hit in the pocket smaller, and therefore need to hand over a completely re set and clean phone.
Thanks.

You need to backup all your data first.
1) Download Titanium Backup and backup all user data and apps.
Then plug the phone to the computer and copy all Titanium Backup folder to your local computer.
2) Run a rom backup using Rom Manager / just reboot to recovery and backup.
afterwards copy the backup to your local computer, just incase of emergency.
After getting Galaxy S3, download Titanium Backup on it as well, then copy the Titanium Backup folder from your local pc (from S2) to the S3, and run recovery from the application.
No guarantee there would be 100% fit but it should work...
Also, see if your apps provide some kind of logging in process. Then you can login, save all your data to that profile, and login from different devices with same profile...

Thanks for replying , i was hoping not to root the phone.

For the normal rom backup you don't have to root... And try finding logging in... Perhaps its that easy.

-now that backup is stored on my int. storage , even if i move it to some
other place say my system , at the time of restore can we do it directly
from the system(point is does the backup file needs to be there in the
device storage(int or ext) at the time of restore - assuming device is
connected)
2)now when a diff rom is loaded (which has done full wipe) ,

restore

Titanium Backup will do everything you asked for (I recomment the Pro version and you MUST be rooted).
It will backup and restore apps and data, and will also freeze or uninstall any app.
It's on the market for free, but I really do recommend paying the small amount for the full version.

+1 Ti is one of the few apps I would recommend to anyone that wants to flash roms. You can backup all your apps and settings before a flash and then restore quickly and easily. The freeze function is very handy also. IMO you buy this one and never look back. A MUST HAVE.
A nand backup will be used to restore the phone as it already exists. It does not backup apps and settings specifically but you can pull apks and such out of one. Basically you do a nand before you start playing around and if you screw something up or just take an instant dislike to the new rom you flashed you can go into recovery and restore that nand and your phone will be just like you never did anything. It will not however back up your radio.
What I do is backup a few apps data separately and then go into Ti and backup all my apps and system data. I boot into recovery and I make a nand. Then I go over to usb storage and I move the entire contents of the sd over to my computer. This will have both the nand and the Ti backup on it. I delete the entire internal storage after I have taken a quick look to make sure that the backup on my pc is good. This gives me a completely fresh base to start a new rom from. Once I have the new rom flashed I move my ti backup over and restore. I then move the other data that the backup contains that I want back on the phone over and I'm up and running. I keep my music and other stuff that is just going to move from one flash to the next on my sd card as it isnt wiped in the process even if you do a hard reset and it can just stay there without the hassle of backing it up and restoring it. Do not delete your backup until you are sure that you have everything you may want back across to your phone. I usually keep it until the next rom when I start the process over with a new backup.
@JJEgan - which part
@johncmolyneux ,@krabman - thnx guys
so int. usb storage will also be wiped in the process, right?
also can u clarify
- How to get cwm recovery menu screen from PHONE Switched OFF state(like we see by using the function from cwm app -> reboot into CWM rec)
- how can i delete samsung hub apps by editing system and framework files(or if any other file for that matter)?

PC Suite backing up apps

Hi All,
I am using Android from the past 2 years but never really came across any PC Suite like applications that allows to backup apps data/game data. I recently found wondershare Mobilego, a PC application which can backup app apk files but that also comes with bugs, it will not restore always. I had a Iphone 3Gs before and must say backup and restoring was a child's play.
Please let me know if we have something of that sort for Backing up and restore or easier way of backup, not Titanium backup as it does not backup all apps like asphalt 6. Each time I flash a new ROM I have to download 540mb of game data.

I think you're doing something wrong... Are you wiping all user data when you flash another ROM? I have Let's Golf 3 on my phone and when I update to a new ROM I don't loose the 900Mb of additional data of the game.
Usually the game data is saved to /sdcard so if you don't format it, you shouldn't loose it.
A possible workaround for this issue could be the use of a manual backup script to save /data and /sdcard files (Do a tar and gzip to those folders and download to your PC).
Thanks for the reply but do we have any PC suite app for backing up.

Looking for options to backup fastest

I am the type of guy who trys a rom for a few days then moves on to another. One thing i have hated is loosing my apps, and game saves for them also. I use titanium backup, but alot of times it doesn't back up my game saves. Also my issue with titanium back up is when i restore my apps i have to manually select install on all the apps i add.
Im looking for a way to hook my phone to my computer and MOST importantly back up my sms and photos. but would also love to back up my apps and game saves. is there a better option then titanium backup?
thank you
For 1 get titanium backup pro! you will not regret it. This will allow auto backup/restore and you wont have to click to restore 1 at a time.
Depending on where the app saves data, Titanium backup will store your game files. However big games (gameloft etc) store files on ur sdcard.
What I do is backup my sdcard + Titanium backup. This should basically get everything. And in many apps you can backup setting's manually to sdcard (most launchers,GOSmS,etc).
I use a program called Allway Sync. Anything would work (or just copy entire drive every time) but this is how i have it setup. I plug in my phone to computer. SDcard gets H: , External SDcard gets I: and with Allway Sync it just does a 1 way backup to a folder on my computer (propagating changes and deletions). This way if i haven't changed much since last backup it will be done in under a minute instead of re-copying 10+gigs.
Then you can get more detailed with Allway Sync settings and exclude the junk folders (cache, tmp, etc) so it slims your backup down more making it clean.
Once I change rom's or anything I switch direction on Allway sync and copy files back onto sdcard's and then use Titanium Backup Pro to restore all app's.
Wonderful idea. i will look into all that. thank you very much

Can u please show me how can i restore the back up with titanium back up bro? When i wipe all data to flash a new rom, so do i need to reinstall titanium back up and just go there to restore all data?
Thank you
Install TiBu, then batch restore. Only backup user apps and data. That will restore everything from the app and it will do it automatically.
Miui backup is the best by far, but you have to be using miui.

[Q] Recovering data via Titanium Backup.

I obtained my new Galaxy S III yesterday, yet I cannot recover application data, nor the actual themselves via Titanium Backup.
I am transferring from the T-Mobile G2(HTC Vision). The titanium backup data is from there.
I rooted the Galaxy S III, installed the "Omega v.28" ROM, and installed Titanium Backup from the Google Play Store. However, Titanium Backup can no longer detect the data from my former phone. My query is that must I begin anew, or is there a method by which I may recover the application data.

I am not sure in how far titanium can restore data from different phones whereas did you set your backup folder to the correct folder? otherwise the apps do not show up in the restore menu. In addition take into account that restoring system app data is not advised.
I never modified the folder location. I simply removed the SD card from one phone and attached it to the other. Aside from which, I do not require former system application, and I am aware of the hazards of ignorant restoration.
Go to preferences and find the backup location just in case the location is wrong.

The data layout is different in a different phone .

I think it's just a matter of backup location change, denomination of sdcard changes among Rom.
Concerning the application data the backup format is the same in every room as it's done by titanium. As long as he doesn't want to restore system data there is no problem, I've already transferred apps + data without problem from my phone to my tablet, and from my LG p990 to the sgs3.
Go to TB settings, and show choose the existing backup location...

Help me to restore Titanium Bk data

It's a very bad time when you are not using WhatsApp. The thing is I was using s3 with root and many more. And I always use to take backup with titanium application. I took WhatsApp backup in my s3. Unfortunately in last week my s3 gets wet and now it won't work. But I have that backup file in my sdcard. Yesterday I bought galaxy a5 which I don't want root ri8 now. The main problem is I want restore my WhatsApp data. Because I was using my wp on my very old number and now I couldn't able to do verification of wp again. So I had this problem many time but now because of new phone it's very difficult to restore because tb ask for root access. I want to use my wp on my old number so please help me. Hw can I restore my tb data in my new phone which is not yet root..?
I have no full solution, but just an idea. In your TitaniumBackup folder, you should find a tar.gz file with the name of the WhatsApp apk. In there, you should find a data folder and then a /. folder, in which there should be the actual data used by WhatsApp. Then, if your new device accepts that, you should be able to push with adb these files and folders to the new data folder of your new installatation of WhatsApp.
I have never tested anything like that, so I don't take any responsibility, but it is an idea based on Helium from Clockworkmod which uses this trick.
