Does anyone else feel like the ICS OTA was just kind of thrown together and not built very well? To me, nothing seems to be themed consistently and I feel as though ICS/Sense doesn't fit very well together. In some cases, I'll get menus with the black and blue ICS theme and then other times I'll get the Sense white and green menus. Other than having ICS (which is awesome) I don't think HTC put much time into this update. What do you guys think?

Blame verizon all you want for the bad timing of the update, but the performance of ICS is 100% HTC's fault. No doubt about it
Problem is that HTC is mostly green and they want to stay green except Android is turning blue. I guess HTC needs to learn how to theme? Oh and I blame Verizon for everything as well, what a bunch of blowers..
It's kinda sh*tty but it doesn't bother most of us since we're on custom roms that are themed. Source is the only thing I care about.

ICS OTA
I waited for the OTA to drop before I unlocked the bootloader, rooted, and installed custom roms. I don't know why, because the OTA was underwhelming for sure.
It's better than gb for sure

I don't care much for the looks but that is not the problem. It is much slower the gb. The browser does not work well for flash videos. It also does not work when searching pictures with Google. Hancent no longer see's Facebook photos. I have several programs that don't work properly. I wish i could go back to GB!

I was annoyed to find out on a trip this weekend that the navigation voice does not have its own volume and if you play music at the same time, you can barely hear the voice. I had to mute my music when there was a lot of directions coming up.
It is an improvement for me
I am completely stock. I don't like to root until Verizon wont cover the phone any longer. But I was getting close though because of the data drop issues. ICS is not the solution to everything, but it made my phone able to work like I expect. I don't know if I blame HTC, Verizon or the tooth fairy. I know that they all should have been bothered by the number of people running stock that were dealing with not being able to us the internet as a general rule that is a core function of a smart phone, imho.
For those of you who are developing roms, thank you. I will root this phone, probably around Christmas. Thanks for keeping a variety around. :good:
Dated version of sense when 4.0 is the norm for newer HTC phones. Custom roms ftw.

Honestly I am ok with most stuff on it. The only major issue I am having is battery drain. I am hoping after I reset it will be fixed. But it did fix the 4g issues I was having. The browser hasn't been slower for me but I haven't tried videos on it yet. I am annoyed handsent isn't syncing the pics but since the address book is it sounds like a handcent problem. Overall I am happy with it. It's nice I can disable the bloatware and I like how ICS is. I like the sense its not much difference then GB, 4.0 would be nice but at least my phone is working now.

Nice! Glad to hear that you're happy with your phone and the update :good:. If you're having battery issues, try reducing the frequency of data synchs etc. Lower screen brightness for general use etc. Could also try a battery calibration. Good luck!

I kept my sync frequencies, and screen brightness the same so I could compare battery efficiency between GB and ICS. ICS is about 50% worse, in my experience. My extended battery lasts 1 day 9 hours to 0% battery, where it used to last a full 2. It's horrendous. If I reduced sync times and brightness, etc. on GB I would be approaching or exceeding the 3 day mark. Users shouldn't have to do all that just to hit 2 days on ICS. I know some users do not experience these battery issues (my wife and coworker do not), so I have to assume it's an actual defect in my handset.
I agree with OP. Nothing seemed themes consistently at all. I couldn't stand bouncing back and force between ICS and Sense themes, which were entirely different (and arguably clashing).
I spent plenty of time waiting for the OTA, and when it finally came and flashed a new ROM that night.
Screen brightness messes up after using camera (mine stays at full brightness until I lock and unlock again), landscape keyboard is severely ****ed (not so much the keyboard but the displayed content above it where my cursor is), and the themes a little but they don't bother me at all. Anyone else have those problems?

Ive always had that auto brightness problem with the camera even on the droid incredible so its not new to me but i did notice that if you try a new theme some parts of HTC's green theme turn into your color of theme. But not always.
I agree with everything said pretty much accept battery life. Mines still good even on these stock kernals.
Moral of the story... Nexus only from now on lol. The themeing issues and old sense and old version of ICS when we finally get the update is annoying to me. Why didn't they just release the source and not push an outdated update lol.

Yeah I turned on the blue skin theme and it comes up with some blue and some green. Both look fine so I don't complain but the landscape keyboard thing is super annoying. Anyone have that problem or am I the minority?

I'm running MIUI ROM from Th3Bill and loving it (thanks Th3Bill!), the latest release (.29) has transformed my phone - again.
I just have a question though.
I notice the bill releases lots of JB roms (AOKP, Paranoid Android, CNA, MIUI)..
I'm uncertain as to the difference between all of these.
do any work better or worse on the atrix 4g?
Don't get me wrong i'm not doubting TheBill for one microsecond, but am just curious as to why so many roms would be released by one person unless they have some difference between them, or is it just a different look and feel?
I guess i'm just wanting the best JB experience i can get with the ROMS currently available, and short of 'just trying them all', well. i took the lazy route and posted here to ask what fundamental differences there are to an end user perspective.
i understand the underlying release may have features which do not work with the atrix (cam/fp-sensor/tether) and this will be comon accross all ROMS using this underlying release.
thanks.
Gavin.
Best thing to do is probably use each for a day and see which ones have the features you like/need.
I haven't tried cna or pa yet, so I can't comment on their stability. I think since they are all based off the same cm10 that their issues (beyond the common issues of all the roms) are upstream. For example, I don't think any of the roms have camcorder 100 percent working, or native wifi hot spot. The individual roms probably have some smaller bugs that are upstream of th3Bill's work, like I said.
Here's a rough breakdown: miui is very themed/themeable and has some custom features like a cool lock screen, sms pop ups,... You probably know miui already, since you are on it. It's the most different from the rest.
Paranoid android specializes in tabet/phone hybrid ui, tweaking dpi for individual apps without reboot (I think)
Cna is the only jb rom (I think) that has custom lock screen targets yet. I don't know much about it other than that.
I'm on aokp, and I really like it. I like the notification toggles with a brightness bar underneath, and I like the rest of the systemui tweaks.
People can add to this, or correct me if I'm wrong about any of it.
Unfortunately it's a bit time consuming to set up a new rom every day, but there is only 4, so I'm sure you can find the time.... At some point.
I hope that helps a tiny bit. I'm still exploring them myself =)

Thanks for the quick and detailed reply.
Trust me to chose the 'most different' ROM (MIUI)
This is good information to have thank you, and gives me some comfort that i'm not missing out on anything, also that just trying each rom for a day or two is the way to do it.
Cheers for your help, although as my phone is a daily runner, i'll probably stick with what i know now (MIUI).
I may find a cheep atrix to try loading other roms onto soon and perhaps be adventurous with trying other roms on that.
many thanks
Gavin
Miui is definitely my favorite but it feels a little heavy/less responsive compared to aokp/cm10.
I can't comment on cna, or pa because I've never used them.
Aokp/cm10 are great. Fast and smooth and a few of the paid themes lurking around the play store are absolutely stunning, Dream, Lucid, PopStyle all amazing. I use Aokp because of it advanced visual preferences like centered clock, weather under toggles, sliders, lock screen tweaks, on screen nav buttons, stuff like that

I need my phone during the week too, so I usually try one out over the weekend. I definitely can't keep up with th3bill like that hah
Epinter
I´m using Epinter´s CM10 and I´m loving it. I find it very fast and my battery last all day.
I´ve tried MIUI and personally is the one I like the least. AOKP is good also, but not as good as Epinter.
I tried JB roms and my first ROM was CNA. But the provided build during my install had issues and Bill said he might take couple more days. Since it was more related to emails, i have to switch back to other ROM and switched to epinter.
I am on epinter CM10 and its i like it. But even in this ROM, i am having issues with apps like shopkicks not getting loaded.
And few times, when i launch four square app, i will see like slanting colored lines until i reboot.
Also rarely WiFi issues it wont connect and even not possible to disable Wifi until reboot.
But Battery wise i get nearly 1.5 to 2 days with regular use of browsing, 2 emails , texting and phonecalls.
I would love to be able to keep my evo stock, and unrooted. But at the same time make the battery icon show the battery percentage. And also be able to update the sense to the newest version. Well I can dream can't I?

Can't you just remove root when you're done customizing? At the very least, you can tell superuser to deny all root requests automatically
If you're asking whether it's possible to do what you want on a pure stock evo phone: No.
What you are describing is pretty much "why should I root my phone? " in a nutshell
I know all about rooting and everything. I was just saying it would be nice to be able to do things like that. This phone is working very very well for me so far. I really don't want to jinx myself and root it, and then have something happen. I'm gonna do a lot more research on this phone, and make sure that I know it inside and out. It's so much different than the LG Optimus slider I had. Just trying to be cautious sence this is my primary phone. Once i get a custom recovery installed and have my nandroid backup saved. Then its fair game to get the most I can outta this beast. Thank you for the reply. I'm glad this isn't a dead forum like the LG one was.(everywhere I might add)

Its pretty much dead now, we had lot more going on here few months back. And at the beginning of 2012 we had a new ROM or mod every 12 hrs. But anyway you have have everything that is possible on this phone...

Why not put a custom rom on it? HTC phones are pretty much nearly unbrickable.
Yeah. I was pretty much just making a statement about how nice it would be to be able do that. But the stock Rom is working just fine at the moment. Trust me after coming from the slider, this phone is like a dream come true already. I had that thing as custom as you could get it. Like they say if it isn't broken don't fix it! I'll probably end up rooting and all of that eventually. But for now I'm just gonna enjoy it like it is.
Just an update. I did finally decide to root. Left S-on for the time being. Still lovin this phone.

i too am loving this phone, but i know where ya coming from ! ...
just want there to be a stripped back jellybean update that FULLY SUPPORTS all the phone INCLUDING all 3D functions !
as thats why i got a 3d phone ! i dont really understand why you would want to remove that function ! ?
and to have all icons, and colours custom ... bascily a leedroid tweaks for jellybean !
Why do none of the many skins/mods ive tried newer than Gingerbread not allow the signal icons change colour upon its strength !?
(thats green for strong going through yellow, then to red as low !)
unless i have missed something here ??

the EVO 3D was a commercial failure (but popular in the development comm.) for HTC, which is why it never got the proper support it should've got. it only received ICS because it was released on VM after Sprint and even then it was half assed. as for JB, never gonna happen be it official (HTC) or unofficial (dev. community). most Sense development has ceased as many devs. have moved on..
There are apps for percentage in status bar and maybe sime launcher like new sense.. But im afraid thats all you can do but i loved this phone before flashing but after getting s-off it finally unleashed its full power i will never come back to stock
Sorry for the poor title... But basically I am new to rooting with the Evo LTE (had the OG Evo rooted and was very familiar with all that) and have a few questions now that I have rooted it finally!
First, I downloaded Dirty Unicorn ROM and it is nice for the most part, but I noticed (and was informed) of 2 issues. First, all my friends say the voice quality when they are talking to me is horrible. And second, the in call volume is very low, even when set to full volume. I like all the features this ROM has, but the issues with the in call quality is a deal breaker. Is there a fix for this? It does appear that this ROM is based off CM 10.
Second, in that ROM it had a badass battery icon for the status bar. I can't seem to find it. To describe it, It was 2 half circles, one inside the other, both segmented into 10 segments. the inner one represented increments of 10, and the outer one went down by 1 as the battery decreased by 1. Can anyone point me in the direction of this status bar icon? lol
And third, I would love if you guys could give me your recommendations/thoughts on some good ROM's that I should try out! I've been out of the 'root' game for quite some time, and am unsure of what ROM's are the best out right now. Ohhh and is there a MIUI ROM out that is stable for the EVO LTE????
Anyway, thanks for all your help guys! I really appreciate it! :good:
What's so good about Kit Kat?
I upgraded to Kit Kat and I see nothing new, but alot more restriction on many things. Even the 3G icons is ugly. Everything at the notification bar is now white color. The battery meter is white, the 3G icon upload and download arrow is white. EVERYTHING in the notification is white!
My Hotspot is not working until someone figure something out. (thank you in advance for your time and effort)
I regret upgrading to Kit Kat 4.4.2

I like KitKat so far
If you are rooted, I was informed that WiFi Tether Router by Fabio Grasso ($1.95) may help with tethering. There are few people per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50826678&highlight=tether#post50826678 that have mentioned it works, although I am not currently using it because I do not have a device i need to tether too consistently.
My battery on KitKat is the same if not better and for some reason I believe I now have more RAM available for actual use. I thought I previously had like 2.4 and no it's like 2.7, but I'm a Noob and could be all off on that. Anyway, I love the full album art and access to notification (using AcDisplay for notifications). Just wish sammy wouldn't interfere with cool stuff like the google dialer (although I think only nexus devices got this).
EDIT: I forgot to mention this is for Keeping Knox counter at 0. I have not tripped it yet and am not currently willing to.
If you want hot spot back and a all around faster rom since updating to kitkat I strongly advise checking this out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2671779
[ROM|NABD|KitKat|4.4.2] Galaxy Note fre3 Hybrid De[Odex] v2.0beta -BeastMode Kernel-
This has wifi hot spot enabled and a whole plethora of goodies already working. If you feel the kitkat update was for nothing try this rom then might convince you otherwise.
If you just want wifi tether Then just as he said just buy wifi tether router it works great. I bought it and can vouche for it. I was in the same boat my friend thinking it was a crappy pointless update but have been seeing a bit more change for the better with this new rom.

I'll give you one major benefit that I've noticed only on KitKat.
When on Jellybean, if I wanted to push a single apk, even something as simple as calculator from a different rom onto mine, even when it was the same app for the same phone and build, I'd inevitably get a force close if not first clearing app data and cache.
Not so with KitKat. If an app successfully can be swapped or not, one needn't rule out the possibility that clearing app data and cache was the culprit. It'll either work or not work.
With Jellybean, one could get a force close even if complete compatibility exsited, if the app wasn't first cleared in app manager.
You can see what a significant improvement, for developers, testers and hobbyists.
